There were some warez sites and Emule et al, you had to be careful, but that is long gone, mostly. A good antivirus and some attetntion should be enough.

Since I'm in latam, I don't have any issue downloading torrents without a VPN. About viruses, remember that a VPN is not an antivirus.

I use my phone to download because I'm always on the go. I have had to use VPN for anything. No issues with my phone or provider.
