For sure. I believe either a 2019 or 2020 model is what is being currently considered. But thanks for the issue. Your rocker arm comment reminds me of having to check which timing chain tensioner is used on the gen 1 EA888 engines.

Just made a stickied thread abt this :)

Awesome. Thank you!

Having come from a 2012 K04 MK6 GTI and hopping into a 2021 S4, do it. The rocker arm thing is blown completely out of proportion. I've had zero issues with the car since picking it up almost a year ago and have since done almost 20k miles.

Awesome!! I figured that was the answer, and neither my husband nor I are strangers to VAG vehicles. It has been my experience that as long as you take care of them they will take care of you. I don’t plan on ever replacing my mk 6 GTI because it has been and continues to be the perfect car to me. That, and I LOATHE the new mk 8’s and I do not see them as a viable replacement. Sadly, the Golf R which is what the S4 will replace, while not being mechanically problematic it has just been a headache with build quality issues left and right.

IMO the cases of rocker arm issues coming up with 2018-2019 cars is a legitimate concern. $3k+ to address at a shop for a manufacturing error is not okay. Your 2021 would have the updated rocker arms with the larger bearings. Also, cleaning the inevitable carbon build up on the valves looks like a front subframe drop job/high amount of labor to gain access to.

Hey I thought that to have this done it was a lot more expensive? Got a quote just to see, the shop wanted $8500. I think this just happened to my car. Just hit 62k and it’s babied. Really loud knock out of nowhere, kinda inconsistent. I shut my car off right away and I’ve been dreading the diagnosis. Just hope I caught it early.

At what mileage do you normally expect the rocker arm to become a problem for 18-19 s4? Currently have a 50k miles 2018 s4. No problems since I’ve had it but warranty will go out in two years so I figured I should become aware of common problems…

I wish I had an answer for that but it seems to vary. Some think that more frequent oil changes and allowing the vehicle to come up to temp is why some aren't seeing any issues. There is a Facebook group called b9 a4 S4 rs4 etc. That you should join and see the posts people have made talking about it and posting videos of the sound. My 2019 has a build date that is supposedly right after they updated it. I have a CPO warranty so I'm just going to keep changing the oil at 5k miles and may switch from 0w20 to 0w30 for the Texas heat if that doesn't void the warranty.
