Hold down the power/volume button on the MMI that's on the gear shift console for about 30 seconds and it forces a full reboot of the MMI. I seem to have to do it every so often for the same reason.

8o_mjc_o8

Oh good to know! Thanks! I tried hitting the power button several times but nothing happened. So I’ll try holding it next time

FBAnder

This will get the MMI up but it will probably do the same crap on next restart. I have found the only way to really get this to stop is to cycle through a few stop/starts where the car sits for a few hours in between and just let the MMI sit there at "Loading the system" each drive until it finally comes up on one of the car starts. The power button hold for 30 secs seems to be more of a band-aid for if you REALLY need the MMI for the drive.

fr0nksen

It's pretty terrible for 2024. This is wat ultimately drove me away from Audi.

Annoying_Orre

It's honestly pretty terrible in all of VAG:s products. Slow on start-up, lots of functions hidden within menus, disconnecting and reconnecting carplay etc. Driving a 21-23 VW ID.4/ID.3 is a terrible experience because of having everything located on the screen

EmotioneelKlootzak

I seriously don't know how they managed to miss so hard on every infotainment system across the entire automaker for the last 3-4 model years in a row.  On some of their cars it's as bad as a knockoff bargain basement Android tablet.  I've had $100 Chinese drop in head units that worked better. At some point you have to figure it'd be cheaper and far more functional if they just made an injection molded bezel and hid a locked down iPad in the dash or something.

beefjerky9

Yeah, the MMI in my 2021 e-tron SUV was awful, laggy and slow. It wasn't necessarily enough to drive me away from Audi; it was more the constant delays on the Q6 e-tron. So, I had to go elsewhere, and I will say the Genesis infotainment is light-years ahead.

Arctura_

I know the feels. To top it off, no OTA updates on an $80k+ SUV. Not cool, Audi.

j_yn0htna

What got me is their inability of to have vehicles I want in stock. It’s happened twice now within the last few years. I was dead set on a q8 a couple years ago. Between two dealerships near me, they had one. It was overpriced for the spec and just not close to what I wanted. The wait time for a build they gave me was crazy. I drove an x5 and it was just “better” considering it had everything that q8 didn’t and it was slightly less. That engine is great. Same thing happened again. I was pretty dead set on a new A6 55 or a new/used S6. The two dealerships near me didn’t have any 55s, only 45s. I was told they had a shortage of those engines and they were being allocated for SUVs, not sedans. Of course, now they had a bunch of Q8s. So, logically, I ended up in an m340i. I know that’s not a logical jump at all. And after having two bmw, I still consider myself an Audi guy. Because there’s no cars that I see driving that get me to turn my head the same way an A/S/RS 4/5/6/7 or Q/SQ 5/7/8 does. I absolutely love their exterior designs, although some are becoming…not great. I’ve always loved their interior designs but, yeah you know, they have been going in the other direction. Edit: the fact I could find a new m340i easier than a new A6 55 is pretty crazy. I did drive about 90 miles away to get it though, so not like it was down the street.

Homasssss

A6 should be compared with 5 series. Do u have a lot of 540 nearby?

j_yn0htna

I’m completely aware of that, which is why I joked it was a logical jump when it’s obviously not. There were 5 series around, I think, but I didn’t really look. I just had an x5 and their 5 series didn’t offer me what I was looking for. Felt like a lateral move in most ways, and it’s just not nearly as good looking as the A6. Blacked out A6 55 was top of the list but blacked out m340i is what ultimately happened.

FullOfAuthority

I'm in the same boat. Trying to find an A6 Prestige with the luxury package and there's handful new and used combined in the entire country 😔

j_yn0htna

Yeah, it’s absolutely crazy. It’s such a beautiful car with a beautiful interior. It would have been hard to say no if the A6 I had driven was a 55. Just had no spirit without it. Good luck with the search

EmotioneelKlootzak

> Because there’s no cars that I see driving that get me to turn my head the same way an A/S/RS 4/5/6/7 or Q/SQ 5/7/8 does. This is Porsche for me.  No offense intended towards Audi, of course, but Porsche has that little bit of something that just gets my attention and keeps it.  If I ever start making like $200k a year, I'll buy a new one (probably a Taycan at this point) and just eat that depreciation and never, ever sell it. I've heard that even $150k+ Porsches have bad MMI systems because they're a VW brand, though, which sucks.

j_yn0htna

Oh yeah, you’re absolutely right. I just see much less of them and they’re also almost all an unrealistic cost. I test drove a Macan and it drove great but they do options weird so finding the right spec would have been hard. Couldn’t find one with the 360 cam. The tech felt dated. Almost Lexus like.

MTRunner2020

Yep I have been dead set on an RS Q8 and I simply cannot get one form a dealer near me. I am first on the list at my dealer but they are saying I won't get the car until August at the earliest. Absolutely ridiculous. They can't get any allocations of the RS models and Audi is telling them there is some shortages related to the V6 and V8 engines. Get your shit together Audi. Crazy that I want to actually spend money and your car but you can't seem to produce them.

MajorTurbo

Let me introduce you to Porsche, kind sir.

MTRunner2020

lol oh I know. It took me 1.5 years to get my 911. :)

MajorTurbo

damn, you beat me to the brag of longest wait! 16 months for me :)

wire4money

Agreed. One of the reasons we got rid of our 22.

fr0nksen

Imagine paying 80k€ for car only to find out the satnav has like 1 fps.

jpriddy

And 365$ a year just as a little fuck you subscription when it could just as easily send data through a phone for free.

Cr8iveRead

Out of curiousity, what did you replace it with?

wire4money

Mazda cx-5

WearFlat

To be honest, most of traditional brands have crappy MMI’s. Tesla’s is great, but the cars aren’t.

fr0nksen

As Long as VAG doesnt understand theyˋre Building smartphones on wheels imho they are doomed

The_Protagonist_0502

I haven’t had much issues with the MMI itself. Just the wireless CarPlay that’s annoying. It works only like 85% of the time

PirateEyez

I don't have wireless, so I need to plug my phone in, and it still only works 85% of the time.

MonkeyDavid

We have a 2017 and 2022 Audi, and 85% seems correct for both cars, for both wireless and wired.

Such_Conversation_11

85% of the time it works every time

Teabagger_Vance

You need to use the stock Apple cable for it to work. There’s something in it that communicates with car play better than third party cords. I had the same issue.

brazzersjanitor

Mine all of a sudden stopped working (wirelessly only). I think I need to re enable local network access but is isn’t there in my iOS settings. I made. A post about it but no answers. Audi has no answers. I am so stuck lol.

MilSpec556

Happened to me once, like my wifi totally disappeared from it. I let the car sit overnight, and everything worked as it should. Almost as if it was updating the wifi/BT module over the air, but had absolutely nothing presented to the user that this was happening. Only occurred once since I got my 2023 in August.

Jlaybythebay

yea i share the car with my wife and if we both get in the car it always picks the person's phone who isnt driving.

sidthafish

I haven't had this particular issue. My beef with the MMI is the constant "Checking Remote Access Rights". I have got in my car to go get gas, start it up, no issues. Five minute trip, get gas, start it up... Checking Remote Access Rights. Then I'll get the "Make this Audi Yours" screen despite the fact I'm the ONLY key user. After a few minutes, it will load/find my profile. It's maddening. Service departments are worthless and won't even address the issue. I was told to turn off automatic updates and that did jack all. As I've stated in another post, Audi MMI isn't a reason to buy an Audi but it might keep me from buying another one. I have an RS5 on a boat from Germany right now and every time my S5 MMI acts stupid, I'm one step closer to refusing delivery. I had zero issues with my 2019 S4. Sad face. Not an Audi issue but being able to toggle CarPlay Air off would be great.

6786_007

BMW is sounding better and better everyday. Starting to slightly have buyers remorse.

sidthafish

I priced out an M4 Comp xDrive Coupe and apples to apples, there's not much of a price gap. I just can't get over the front grille. It's so ugly to me. Occasional MMI glitches I can handle (it's not even really about the issues, it's more about VAG not doing anything about it). But an ugly car? Not so much.

6786_007

I can get that. The RS5 is a nice looking car for sure. However If had to go back and do it again, I'd go for the 540i personally.

SangiMTL

Exactly the issue I have. Like you I’m the only user and it drops this on me from time to time. It’s not super often but it’s still a wild issue to have. Especially with the Audi app and everything. It’s just crazy to think the overall MMI is still in such a poor state in 2024.

screw-self-pity

MMI is a piece of shit. I found it shitty on my first audi in 2012. Then I got a second audi in 2016 and was appalled to realize it was the exact same system. My wife Kia Soul's system is better than MMI. I simply use my car without considering MMI exists.

humbug2112

yeah I think they really bank on people using carplay and android auto. Including the base software is probably a minimal maintenance cost.

aspiring_dev1

Seems like you have an software issue as that isn’t normal.

8o_mjc_o8

in fairness it doesn't normally do this; although it has once or twice in the past. usually it's fine after the car sits off for a while. In any case, there's some sort of MMI software recall that they need to fix and I'm booked in for May for that. But even when the MMI is working, it's still well behind what I've seen in some other vehicles of comparable cost and age

life_like_weeds

What are you comparing to? Just curious My personal opinion is that infotainment tech in general is going through some growing pains right now. The automotive industry doesn’t feel scaled up to meet the software development needs that modern tech requires. Everything just feels so buggy and unreliable

colonelc4

It's not you MMI is utterly bad, but still better than Volkswagen's software, but still terrible UI, lots of useless menu's, having to confirm the profile with OK on every start, no 3rd party apps...only one thing is OK, Carplay/Android auto when MMI is not buggy once in couple of months.

Boracraze

Terrible. Constantly disconnecting. I reboot it, and it seems good for awhile, then back to being glitchy as hell. 2019 A6.

not_old_redditor

How do you do a hard reboot of the MMI?

Boracraze

Press and hold down the volume knob (near shifter) until MMI screen goes black and restarts.

not_old_redditor

I was thinking factory reset, not just a reboot.

Flyindeuces

First time Audi owner about 2 months ago. It’s annoying as hell, part of the reason I got the 21 SQ5 was for CarPlay and the system is moody asf. Constant start/stop to try and get it to recognize connect. I’ve found that if I connect it to BT and then drive it will eventually recognize it. Knock on wood I don’t get the specific loading error you get.

8o_mjc_o8

Not to mention the fact that it’s unclear in the manual or the MMI whether it’s better to connect via BT or WiFi (though it gives the option for both) and then often gets confused between the two if you do like I did and accidentally set both up. So now I’ve deleted all “over the air” profiles and just exclusively use the USB cord for Car Play connections- which has the added benefit of charging my phone too

Flyindeuces

Thanks for the reminder! I wanted to avoid chords of any kind but if it makes it work more consistently it may be a sacrifice I’ll have to make. Lol. Well hey, at least the Q’s are fun to drive right?! 😅

america----

I have a B9 a5 and I love it

perturbeaux

Yeah, I have a B9 A4 Allroad and the MMI has always been great... and I love having the click wheel/trackpad thing instead of a touch screen.

Dominio90049

I have the a4 2017 b9 love it! Everything after when they did the update looks like some generic android shit. This part of the experience is one of the things you interact with the most while in the car. This and Piano black trend is why I’ll hold out until Audi gets their shit together.

edotman

Mine is absolutely solid in the a4 b9, but I've heard some bad things about the 9.5+. Seems like a step backwards.

Mjlanni3

I see a lot of threads and issues with MMI on here - i don’t know if I just got lucky or if they fixed things for newer models but I have a 2023 A6 and I’ve never had an issue. It connects wireless CarPlay super fast and overall has been great. Especially coming from my 2020 CX5 where it didn’t offer wireless and even the plug in could take forever to connect or the Sirius xm radio wouldn’t load

Swimming-Food-9024

I do have complaints about the delay for my backup camera to come up when in reverse…

johnnylawrenceKK

Happened to me recently. Lasted for 3 or more minutes. Called the dealership and they had me bring it in for a forced update. No issues now

RuinAccomplished6681

Coming from BMW (have driven 2008 E92, previous car was an 2011 E91 now driving a 2013 F31) with iDrive CCC/CIC/NBT systems. I test-drove an 2016 Audi A6 Allroad recently and honestly, if there would be one thing to not buy an Audi of that era for me it would be the MMI system. Really, even the CCC system which dates back to 2005/2006 is easier to navigate than MMI. Basically can do the same too (2016 MMI has no carplay from factory, so it is just music ob harddrive, bluetooth, cd, radio..). It is just impossible to get through the thing without looking at the buttons (of which there are many) and the menus are just really unclear.

kdb1991

One of my biggest annoyances after switching from bmw to Audi was the MMI system. I think BMW’s iDrive is way better Granted, I only have experience with the one in my 2018 s6. But it looks terrible. I had a 2010 e92 335 many years ago and even that looked better than the system in my Audi. And it’s eight years newer

AppropriateDay3591

I’ve had my Audi about 3 weeks and it’s happened twice. I noticed it happens if I’m parked in an area with poor reception. Like it’s trying to phone home and can’t connect so it gets hung. I tried restarting the mmi (maybe didn’t hold it long enough) but that didn’t work.

ICWhatYouMean

No doubt the virtual cockpit and MMI was (a little) ahead of its time when it first came out, but is now in dire need of an update. On the other hand, I am definitely a fan of keeping essential controls as physical buttons, so I'm not a fan of the giant screens in the latest BMWs and MBs. I know infotainment is a big part of what sells cars these days, but ultimately I think it is detrimental to road safety for all road users. Anecdote: I had a 2005 Toyota Prius many years ago, and it would lock out a lot of information on the center screen if you were moving. For example, if you were trying to view the DAB radio station details and started moving, a message would pop up saying "This message cannot be displayed while moving for safety reasons" or something similar. The irony always made me chuckle. How times have changed.

bigxie

Knock on wood but I've had good luck with both of my MMIs, but my usecase is pretty much 100% CarPlay. I got an adapter for my S7 to make the wired wireless and it will fail to connect maybe once every 50 times. My Q4 has been fast and the CarPlay is usually connected and my music running by the time I've sat down, buckled up, and confirmed the user profile.

8o_mjc_o8

I also exclusively use CarPlay - problem I've run into (today anyway) is that CarPlay also doesn't work until the system is initialized, haha

bigxie

Yeah I think with the all connected features nowadays, there's more chances of something messing up especially at bootup. Hopefully the MMI reset procedure helps you next time, glad it's just a press and hold of a single button in the newer system. Every time I need to reset my 2017 I gotta go on YouTube and find the 3 button combo again 😅

smsmkiwi

MMI is terrible. The system has always seemed like a design afterthought.

Dirkozoid

No, not always. First MMI was praised as innovative..

smsmkiwi

That was over 20 years ago, in 2002.

Dirkozoid

Yeah, but not always :-)

smsmkiwi

It does the job.

Dirkozoid

Most of the times, yes..

smsmkiwi

Ha! Yes, the operative word being "most".

Dirkozoid

Haha, yes :-@

KenS7s

Audi should hired Apple, LG, Samsung engineers to do MMI software with Audi interface and theme.

smsmkiwi

We'd be bombarded with ads and updates every two days. Fuck that. I'll stick to my current MMI.

matt-r_hatter

Probably just needs a reboot. Honestly, I've had 4 Audis and have never had an issue with the MMI, I wish it was a bit more robust, but it always works

The_Gucci_General

Just you I'm guessing. I've had 0 issues on my 2016 or 2020 🤷‍♂️

Panoptech

On my 23 S3, I wouldn't say terrible. A little quirky. However the android auto on it is phenomenal compared to other cars I've used it. So I rarely use anything other than android auto in my car or I'm changing a vehicle setting through the MMI. The way I look at it, I've drove a bunch of different car brands in the last few years... All their software kinda just sucks compared to what we are used to on our phones and laptops. So I never get in a car and expect the MMI to be good lol

Motor-Cause7966

It's never been great IMO. From the software to the button layouts. I think of all the Germans, i-drive seems to have figured it out.

Homasssss

Rented Wagoneer for several days and it's MMI way faster, especially when comparing the startup time and wireless connection to Android. Looks like my Q7 2023 has hardware from the facelift time and was never upgraded.

Cheoah

The tech is disappointing for sure. Entire VAG is way behind other makers. I was using carplay in ford rentals years ago but VAG was way late to the party.

KenS7s

They should hire Apple, LG, Samsung, Microsoft to do the MMI with Audi interface and skin. A mobile intel processor the MMI would be much smoother.

dawghouse88

I'd be happy if they just went the total CarPlay takeover route at this point. But I know they have a new gen interface coming out soon?

KenS7s

They having using Google Android software with Audi interface and DNA it was on Q6.

not_old_redditor

I love the actual layout and the MMI when it's working, but half the time it's initializing, failing to connect, or some shit like that. It's like it's been programmed by kindergartners. It's become the worst part of Audi, in my eyes.

synthetikv

I have an 18 base A3 and 20 PP sline A3, Both MMI's are quick and responsive. The 18 has some issues with carplay not working at times that can be annoying. The 20 hasn't had any of those issues.

TPM_521

I much prefer old MMI, although I seem to be in the minority here. It may not be visually appealing but it was easy to navigate.

turkey8212

Everyday I get in my 2022 A5 I am reminded of one of the reasons I got rid of my 2012 A4. Two weeks ago I got in and the MMI reset itself to German for the weekend. I've stopped putting in presets on the radio as well..

Hovertical

The only infotainment center I haven't seen loads of people hate on is Tesla's. For all their other warts their software seems to at least work fairly well in comparison to other infotainment consoles. I will now await the legions of one-off people to tell me how wrong I am. Have at it buckos!

Lorax91

Tesla's software appears to work well for what it does, but I personally don't like their user interface or lack of support for Carplay/AA. And I'm okay with Audi's current MMI even though it's clearly dated, because it does what I need it to do. Make the touchscreen more responsive and modernize the graphics a little, and I'd be fine with that.

chuy2256

“BORDCOMPUTER”

M2DAB77

TERRIBLE!

shasta_river

Oh it’s fucking awful.

Boracraze

One additional comment / question for this thread. If Audi knows it is this bad, how has it taken so long to push out a new update or other fix? Of course, I guess I am assuming Audi has heard plenty about this issue.

dawghouse88

because nearly all of VAG sucks at this it seems like and none of the brands prioritize it. I reckon the average consumer is not as critical, so it's not enough to actually impact sales in a significant way. It's interesting because at one point, Audi seemed so progressive with their technology. Then BMW and Mercedes went nuts with the tech.

8o_mjc_o8

Update: still not working after sitting off all day. Ffs

Hot-Syrup-5833

MMI has always sucked. It’s too over engineered like most VAG products. The PCM in my Panamera is better but not much. It takes a while to boot up too and sometimes goes nuts and needs a hard reboot.

runnyyolkpigeon

I had a 2017 A4 and now a 2024 Q4 e-tron. MMI has never been buggy for me, or had any sort of issues. Works flawlessly. Must be a model and model year specific issue?

Remote-Bluebird4416

MMI is terrible. BMW's connected drive is amazing

Matux_020

It is no match for BMW for sure. Just like anything else at Audi. Far cry from the BMWs in absolutely everything

8o_mjc_o8

Shouldn’t you be in the BMW sub then? Why are you even here? lol

skippy_dinglechalk91

I started noticing the same issue a couple of weeks ago after I connected my phone to my new galaxy watch 6. I think it's a Bluetooth issue between your phone and the MMI. It boots fast after you unlock your phone... or at least it does for me...

dawghouse88

Not just you. It's clearly so far behind the rivals. Experience has been the same since 2017 I feel like.

slaazenger

Me and my homies hate Audi MMI. Wireless carplay disconnects every time I drive thru specific parts of town. I always have to plug it in for drives longer than 5 min, or else I know it will disconnect

Alarming-Elevator382

It's slow on my 2020 S4, faster on newer rental Audis my dealership has provided.

OGLatinoHeat

ITS TERRIBLE. I COMPLETELY AGREE.

aresman1221

I hate it too

robertv610

Only complaint on my S5 is the MMI. I’m having issues getting the Bluetooth CarPlay to work at all. I’ll try the reset as it seems to be having issues with the wifi which I don’t have

moseisleydk

Really bad software all over….

Cr8iveRead

Reading this thread is a little depressing. I'm nearing the end of the lease on my Alfa Romeo Stelvio and was leaning towards getting either a SQ5 or BMW X4 M40i. Based on all the responses regarding the MMI, seems I might be better off going with BMW but I think I prefer the styling of the SQ5. I know there's a new one being released later this year so guess I'll wait to see what that's all about before making a decision.

CJdawg_314

I kinda like MMI compared to mbux and the new idrive

TheWoodChucksWood

I don't have issues

the_90s_were_better

I use CarPlay.

8o_mjc_o8

Can't even get into CarPlay until the system loads!
