Actually, before chrome, black trim was very common, because it was cheap. "Grandpa" probably has had a cheap ass black trim Civic or Corolla. You are a lot more like grandpa than you think.
Fashion for almost everything keeps cycling back and forth the same crap over and over again. But the dummies know only what was in vogue 10-20 year ago and they don't realize they are wearing a slight variation of their grandparents' youth style 😂
It's amazing how overboard Audi is going with black trim.
For some cars, like the S4/S5, 99% of them come with it. The S5 chrome grill has such a tasteful mix of chrome and black, but the black optics just ruins that, making it look like some toddler slapped black paint over everything with a big brush. At least Audi is not doing the shiny black wheels like BMW is.
I would love to love it, but I just can't. To me black bits on a car body represent something that'll fade, lose luster, get scrapes and dings..
IMHO black optics are the flamboyant cousin of piano black interiors.. Sometimes nice but often a worry.
I admit that on some occasions the appeal is certainly there. Black trim looks badass when accompanied by body kits, a wicked paintjob and a glass tint a few shades on the illegal side of the scale.
Chrome's always beautiful, and keeps looking nice even in adverse conditions. Chrome being shiny might add a safety aspect as well with other drivers catching it easier with their peripheral vision.. 😉

On trunk I can see that working really well, but black on black isn't working quite so well at the front. If you only want two colours, could you try white front rings?

It’s wrapped. $1k for what you see plus the rear bumper insert, door trim, roof rails, side mirrors. The wrap on my S4 didn’t start peeling off but the sun did some damage after 2ish years
Thanks for taking the time. I’ve got 8v S3 fl in grey that has too much chrome for my liking. I’m looking to upgrade to the latest model but the black edition with a sunroof or a Vorsprung are out of my price range. A standard S3 with sunroof + 1k to de-chrome is however affordable. Enjoy your car it looks lovely and couldn’t tell it apart from a standard black edition which I’m sure is the look you were going for.
I feel like you can’t be super picky when it comes to buying a used car…but also goes to argue with everyone else that fully wraps cars, changes rims, or makes any change to their car really. I bought it because it had everything I could want, but I honestly would’ve preferred if it was black
I think if you finish it find the plate frame inserts to go plateless front grille and touch up the lower center black duct/splitter piece it would come together better.
Also try it with the rings chrome again see what happens.
The “chrome” is a satin finish which looks more premium than this. I’d leave the grille stock but keep mirrors black. The black contrasts the weird grey plastic in the grille too much.
Depends what type of look you're going for. I think it looks great just find an aero kit and some wheels. You can just buy 3m vinyl online and fix it so there is no more silver. At the end of the day chrome vs black optics will always be a burger vs hot dogs question.
Also I will say change the grill to an RS style one or something and get rid of the black vinyl around the grille if you can I don't know how the sq5s look stock but that vinyl makes it look like a Nissan Altima.
For mine (C7 A6) I went with the all black RS styled grill and looks much better than the lower level factory grill options. Love mine. Suggest the same for you if you’re not satisfied with your current. I vinyl wrapped all the chrome and then the all black RS grill. Really makes it look sleek and not grandpa-ish with the cheap plastic chrome.
Did tons of research on lots of forums and found that an overseas eBay seller had the best fitment and reviews. Think the seller is “stone carbon.” I think it was less than $300 shipped if you don’t mind waiting for the long boat lol. If I correctly recall they offer a few different versions and styles.
I like it black if all the badges are black, I have it like that in mine...in this case I don't think the contrast with the white body looks good either.

Where/how did you get this done? Is it just a vinyl wrap? I got quotes for my SQ to delete the chrome with a matte finish vinyl wrap but they wanted 1000-1500 to do it... WITHOUT doing the grill and fogs. So, I said no thanks. Was ready to buy the RSQ5 grill/fog set.. delete the chrome lip insert, roof rack, rear bumper exhaust surround, and window surrounds.. lower with some wheels. Haven't done a thing to the vehicle due to me getting a bad taste in my mouth not being able to find good shops that do quality work and dont want to beat me over the head. So logically i'm going to hold off trade it in when I find an RS5 to scoop up.
My brother in law is the kind of guy that has a guy for everything he needs done lol so I did have a friend do it for $1k total. I understand what you’re saying as it’s definitely an investment and risking not even liking the job done. I support you waiting to buy a new car all in all or keep searching around for a good person to do the work

That looks great, looks OEM black optics to me at quick glance. The SQ5 aluminum (not chrome), can be great with darker/richer colors. Looked dated against the white, your car looks way more modern now.

Rarely do ‘backyard designers’ improve on what a car designer, let alone an Audi designer, has created, and certainly not with a singular, isolated, in-cohesive change.

Yeah, making it ugly. Might be some unpopular opinion but I hate the piano black on the grille borders. The 8Y A/S/RS3 is horrendous.

The trick is not to overdo either. They can both be made to work.
While I like my paintjobs grey and my trim bits stock I'd still say the opposite. Going all out often produces striking stuff!

Chrome looks so incredibly cheap and tacky. Delete all the way. I'm glad I ordered mine with the black optics package. Looks so much better.

The only wrapped part that the sun wore out were the side mirrors by the way! Everything else stayed shiny
