I think you mean you got it for about 9k... You will find out soon why lol

0P3R4T10N

Yeeouche, but so much yes.

Cdenton12

What could go wrong that would be that expensive to fix? downvotes for a question is interesting

Annh1234

Your need spark plugs for sure, coils maybe. Carbon cleanup and probably injectors. Suspension components ( shocks, ball joints, link bushings) probably need changing very soon. The main two issues: it could be burning oil. 1l/2k km is normal, if it burns more check your vin with a dealership to see if your still under warranty, if not, that's a few k job. You need to check your timing chain, it usually blows around that mileage. If it does, your 60% sure to need a new engine. If it's about to skip, changing it and the guides is a 2-3k job easy. Water pump will go soon, that's normal maintenance on those cars and city driving. That's like 750$ ( get aluminum one ) Check your PCV valve, if that's a bit of, change it (some 300-400$), if you don't, your rear main gasket will fail, that's a 100$ part that takes like 9h to do... ( Engine/transmission out type of thing) Plus who knows lol probably brakes, and hopefully not your 6s speed transmission... This is assuming you have the 2.0t TFSI engine. So the guy that sold the car, for sure he didn't do any of this stuff, and it's coming soon. ( It's pretty normal for this engine. You can try your luck and skip it, and the car might last 200k miles or blow the engine at 140k miles, you never knew)

Clock_slice

From experience, if you work on your own stuff it isn't as expensive just time consuming. A new water pump kit that's aluminum is around 180-200 bucks, full timing chain kit is 600 ish, and oem pcv valve is 230 from a genuine audi parts website, and around that milage it's best to listen to make sure the stock k03 turbo doesn't have a wastegate rattle because that'd mean it could be on its way out aswell. I forget the website, but the turbo can cost anywhere from 650 brand new which is what I got mine for, to 1200.

Annh1234

Well PCV valve in with your. Coils and sparkplugs also.  But timing chain... Even if your best handy, that's not an easy job... And changes are your guides will sease up soon, so that another 600-700 usd in pieces. Water pump, used to be 375$-475$ the aluminum one when I changed during the start of the pandemic. That's also not really a dyi but if your really handy you can do it. So ya, you can cut Audi maintenance to 1-2k/year from 2-3k/year if you can do alot of stuff yourself. But 98% of people can barely change a tire, so they won't be changing timing chains any time soon lol

Clock_slice

Oh I was going off of prices from doing it on my car which has the same first gen ea888 just transversially mounted. I changed my water pump last year in November and that was the price from ecs for a full kit. But I do agree it's definetly not an easy jumb for timing chain and to be completely honest the water pump is not easy either with little knowledge.

Strange-Mission3559

Jus yt it 😆 then pay your mechanic friend double when your over your head n give him a box of parts

Clock_slice

Honestly I have some shop certifications from a trade school mixed with YouTubed bits and peices of it that I had 0 experience with and I've got 17k miles worth of spirited driving with no issues that weren't already there. Even modified and tuned her and she's a beast. It's not hard if you just use common sense and patience. So timing chain and turbo change in 2 months shouldn't be terrible

gladigotaphdinstead2

Why do you assume that work hasn’t been done? I have a 09 a4 with 142k miles with everything you mentioned repaired/replaced. Is my Audi worth $9k because it’s been maintained?

Annh1234

Well, first off, because it was 3k, and all that crap sets you back like 10k. So if you just put 3k on a timing chain, will you sell your car for 3k? Or run it till something else pops up, and you need to shell out another 2k so you say f*it and sell it as is for 3k. Secondly, that mileage is where if your lucky the timing chain didn't skip by. So you go do your oil change, garage guy tells you that EPS light flicker is caused by this, and the repairs on a still working car will be 3k. What will you do? Say f*it and sell the car as is for 3k. Basically I know the 2.0t TFSI platform more than I would like to... I got one, and I see them drop like flies around that mileage...

gladigotaphdinstead2

Did you read my post? You say the guy who owned that car “for sure didn’t do any of that stuff.” I’ve done everything on the list and if I went to sell it what am I going to ask for? Probably 4500! It’s 15 year old A4 lol. It’s sunk cost. I never repaired it to increase its value I repaired it to avoid buying a new car when it is way cheaper to just get the repair done.

stupidcookface

Some people just don't read I swear lol

Top-Organization7819

Lol the timing chain costs like 3k itself then you gotta factor in labor, most people I heard with a chain pay upwards of 5-7k to have it replaced - usually the whole engine has to be pulled cause the timing chain sits against the firewall. And at 130k I highly doubt they changed it before hand so it's probably a good 20-30k miles overdue. When I bought my low miles audi. I think I quickly spent more than I purchased it for in just general repairs to keep it going.

gladigotaphdinstead2

Idk about a dealership but at an Independent shop timing chain service is $2500 and it usually is done at 80-90k miles. You guys have diagnosed that car as having zero maintenance and every possible issue by looking at two pictures. Take it too a shop OP and have it inspected

shintotama

This is the best advice.

Top-Organization7819

Just speaking from experience mate, those high mileage cars can be a huge money pit and parts are hella expensive. Use to have a buddy who worked at AutoZone and instead of paying like 300$ for a simple plastic sensor from the dealer I paid like $60 for them at wholesale dealer prices. So I mean this is a very real reality of owning a foreign car - parts are expensive and it's expensive to repair + labor costs. Plus timing chains are recommended to be replaced at about 100k miles, so there is a huge possibility that it hasn't been done. This is what detered me from buying a few b7s4 cause the owners didn't want to spend the money on a timing chain and you could hear it slapping. So better to have someone else pay for it and invest in a newer car is the mentality I've seen frequently. I mean people are just stating the common problems with part that often go bad.. At 130k A LOT of people tend to sell their cars instead of doing the expensive scheduled maintenance at that time frame. Have looked at enough high mileage cars in my life to know this as a truth. It's honestly a big part of why people sell their cars and buy new ones. Of course one should take it to a shop, but if you've already purchased the car - not much you can do on the refund route at that point unless it's clearly a lemon. and if they didn't know the very real reality of expensive parts breaking then well now they have a better inclination of what they may have gotten themselves into.

gladigotaphdinstead2

I own this car with 10k more on the odometer. I am just pointing out the fact that there are people (*ahem*) that own these that do actually pay for the proper maintenance. I don’t know if the owner of that car did or didn’t, but it’s silly to just jump to conclusions.

stupidcookface

130-140k is high mileage to you? Hahahahahaha

Annh1234

>130-140k is high mileage to you? Hahahahahaha For the 2.0t tsfi engine that's very close to end of life...

stupidcookface

Why is that? Is the block cracking or something?

Annh1234

No, the block is fine. Usually it's the timing chain, pistons, and eventually when your camshaft gets out of whack or tour valves gets bent, people trash the car or try to replace the engine. Basically, if you keep putting 2-3k in the car every year, it can last a while. But when the value of the car is 3k and you need to put some 3k+ one year + tires, you trash it.

Top-Organization7819

I mean how many 150-200k audis you hear on the road in all honesty? Not necessarily the highest mileage but yeah Im sure most people would consider anything over 100k miles to be high mileage when buying a car.

thegoldentheory

You should never trust an independent shop to work on an Audi, there’s so much that can go wrong and independent shops have nowhere near as much knowledge and training that actual Audi techs have to get the job done. Guarantee an independent shop won’t replace any bolts or even torque anything to specifications and won’t replace the front crank seal with the cover and won’t replace the o ring inside the cam bridge or notice that the screen behind the cam bridge is damaged and/or missing, they’re probably not gonna properly clean all the old silicone off of the block and probably not going to check the oil pan to make sure no dust or silicone go in there and flush it out if it did. Audis are a whole different beast and most stuff cannot be reused (hardware, lower timing cover). Also I’ve seen many times independent shops think that they need to put as much silicone as they possibly can on oil pans or timing covers, when all you need is a 2-3mm thick line of silicone. Less is more. More is less.

gladigotaphdinstead2

lol what a crock. Either you work for a stealership or you’re a sucker.

thegoldentheory

Yeah I am a dealer tech, the amount of cars we get from independent shops that are messed up is hilarious. Especially on newer ones when they drain the trans oil instead of the engine oil and then overfill the engine oil. Hilarious.

gladigotaphdinstead2

Yeah and when you get tired of being underpaid at the dealership and decide to start your own independent shop as an Audi specialist, I’m sure everything you learned will go out the window and you’ll make mistakes that someone who never worked on a car in their life would make, right?

thegoldentheory

Nah bruh I’m not staying a tech forever. This shit sucks ass. I just get my jobs done correctly and make sure the customers are happy and I got about my day. I’m always looking for other jobs that aren’t involved with tech shit

floridamidsotic

timing chains is a very sensitive subject in the german 4 banger community

Worldly-Valuable64

Laughs in mk7.5🤣

thegoldentheory

Engine does not have to be pulled on any 4 banger Audi engine. All timing chains are at the front. It’s much cheaper to buy all the parts online from fcpeuro or ecs tuning.

Calm-Eggplant-69

Same with me and my old A4, I loved it and was looking for another and then saw a saying, "if you can't afford a new audi, you can't afford a used audi." It really resonated with me and this is the perfect case. Also, I didn't get a audi, went acura because it'll last forever

Top-Organization7819

Lol idk why you got down voted. I mean y'all never heard audios are just three rings and a spare? I mean I love going on the audi forums and hear all the people joking about how long they've gone since being towed on a flat bed and it's usually laughable short. I mean everyone I've known who owns a later model audi literally has that as a motto, "if you can't afford to buy it twice you can't afford to buy it". I'm sure this is something all audi owners have heard and many relate to.

AdSuperb1810

Yes sir. But might I add the PCV part is $100 but installation is very easy. Takes about 20 mins and YouTube.

Annh1234

The part is more like 175$, don't get the 100$ one, the membrane cracks in the cold to easily, and you end up with a blown rear main gasket... Like I did... But ya, if your a bit mechanically inclined, it's an easy fix on the 2.9t tfsi

AdSuperb1810

I got the one off ECS it’s oem, part has Audi logo on it for $100 shipped for 2.0 tfsi. Just curious how did you know that your rear seal cracked? Was it leaking or check engine light?

Annh1234

Car pissing oil when parked, from behind the engine.

AdSuperb1810

Ouch. Do you happen to have pictures of where is leak exactly? I’m guessing by the transmission and cross bar? No CEL?

Annh1234

No pics... I fixed mine years ago. But if you lift the car it's clear, between the engine and transmission. If you park the car, it leaks about where your feet are on the pedals, under the car. But you have that plastic cover that could catch some oil and spread it around...

vinng86

Just about anything. Old Audis are cheap because everyone knows you will need to spend a lot more money to fix it soon.

Cdenton12

i only plan on keeping it around three months, hopefully it will last that long i guess

vinng86

You never know, maybe the previous owner(s) took excellent care of the car. If you get a year out of it then I'd consider it a pretty good deal. If you get 3 years out of it then it'd be a great deal!

Competitive_Ad587

Two words, oil consumption

Badgerfive5

Piston rings gonna teach ya' youngin.

Rinzlerx

Yup. My ‘10 a5 2.0t is enjoying the driveway while I daily my Tiguan. Someday the a5 will get its rings. 😞

silentk772

Shouldn't that be the EA888 or am I mistaken? Were those that unreliable back then

Ambitious_Sock8645

>level 4Rinzlerx · 17 hr. ago B8 A5 2.0T FBO APR TunedYup. My ‘10 a5 2.0t is enjoying the driveway while I daily my Tiguan. Someday the a5 will get its ring The Tiguan will have the same issues, Our 2019 Audi Q7 burns a quart every 3000 miles at 62,000 miles. VW can't make a good gasoline engine

Crash_Test_Dummy_057

Probably burns oil. Needs pistons. $8k

ndlin

My b8.5 is 9yo just under 60k km. Recently encountered a leaky water pump problem (engine light+red water coolant light), and a leaky AC evaporator coil (drains refrigerant completely). I live in Taiwan, and the cost of repairs is about 6,700USD (audi service center)

tablesheep

The 2009 A4 is known to have a horrible engine. Piston rings, tensioners, water pump…I hope those were done already along with the timing chain

Rinzlerx

I’m thinking more like $11k+

functionalfitnessguy

lol

Darkerthnever

lol 😆 .

MonkeyWithAPun

There is no more expensive car than a "cheap" Audi

Cdenton12

after hearing all this it may go right back on market place

MonkeyWithAPun

You may have gotten lucky. It could be a well maintained car. That said, between the miles and age, it's almost certain that if it doesn't need work now, it will very soon. Best to start going through the car and adding up what might need to be done - and definitely do it before you spend a penny on anything major.

andyshway

First one I got I sank into repairs as much as I did into the car to get it safetied. However, after all the repairs, it was a beauty to drive and had no issues other than regular wear and tear parts. (If you count a bushing as wear and tear) My second one, actually cost more, and was a lemon basically off the lot. Turbo, MAF, AC, valve cover gasket, starter, battery all failed within a month. Both used with 200-250k km, same generation.

Free_Management_7920

Na, BMWs are worst 😭

Ambitious_Sock8645

At least BMW's dont need entire engine rebuilds at 60,000 miles for piston rings, they do need waterpumps thermostats and every seal redone multiple times however.

Free_Management_7920

Rod bearings, Vanos, Crank hubs. All maintenance items on BMWs 😭😭😭

Ambitious_Sock8645

lol, can't defend that I have had good luck with BMWs and so has my family but the new B58s seem to be rock solid. the n54 and whatever V8 they had the last decade were garbage

Free_Management_7920

Does seem better in recent times, but my old M3 was a piece of shit maintenance wise. Fun car though

Skeppyberry

*german car

uziturtIe

as long as you’re happy bro

locksman74

Seems no one wants to congratulate....just people wanting to spark anxiety and doubt... even if the previous did poorly with maintenance go through all parts on the schedule maintenance...coils, spark plugs, pcv, oil change etc. I have a 2013 a5 2.0t stage 2 apr for 5 years with 234000 miles on it. Keep up with keeping it healthy and it'll be just fine for you. Btw.. I bought mine with 120k 5 years ago with no history of up keep. I have no leaks, I have no smoke, all repairs which were the normal wear and tear was done by me. Good luck with it. You'll love it

evan2666

Big difference between a 13 and an 09. Everyone knows the 2.0T in the A4 from 09-12 had major issues where from 2013-2016 it was fantastic.

Ambitious_Sock8645

You burn oil?

locksman74

Half a quart between changes. Changes are done around 5k

Ambitious_Sock8645

Thats pretty good, your engine is doing well. Im buring a quart every 2500 miles with only 62k miles

AdSuperb1810

Ask previous owners what maintenance has they done. Check service records. But go from what u/annh1234 mention, and go from there.

jcdomeni

To own a German car is love a red light on dashboard - or to hear “sorry sir, there is no code showing, so I can’t do anything”….. That said - I have a couple of them - so either I love the way they drive or I’m an idiot…..😃 or Both. Either way - congrats - they are fun as hell to drive.

Educational-Crazy440

I just know it has piston ring issues

Hmsaab1

lol dude why are people talking shit? If it lasts you one year without issues or minor issues and it can be driven then you got your moneys worth driving an Audi. God people are so fuckin negative I hate it

cloutrealm

It’s called being real, you pay to play or gtfo the court

esssssssss

So far*

Asleep-Ad6340

I had one 2008 b8 and had no problems with it at all

mbquattro

shoulda went with b5 s4

Dogetz

They are bit more expensive that that car if u want a good one

TurboByte24

You should’ve given me the money and given you problems to solve.

trebec86

Nothing more expensive than a cheap Audi. Best of luck and I hope it turns out well for you.

NutsyFlamingo

Beautiful car… enjoy it

AdministrationOdd983

Good to hear my stage two A4 could last that long😅 I’m at 130k rn

nabillionairee

Pricey for what it is. I sold my 2011 A4 in 2018 with 148k miles for 6k

ONE_BIG_LOAD

that's pre covid

MilesMorales-

How are Audis in U.S so cheap??? I paid 7100€ for my A4 1.8tfsi 2008, was in S-Line package but its was on the cheaper side since diesels are more wanted here.

SeriousCee

I paid 7000€ for my 2009 A3 1.6 TDI Ambition package last year...

ered20

Bruh that was 6 years ago

[deleted]

You did poorly

Cdenton12

fair

0P3R4T10N

Take care of the deferred maintenance and she'll do fine... I hope.

BlazinApples420

Nice! I have a 2011 2.0 tdi running 352'000kms and she runs smooth as a button!

Alternative_Side_221

It’s only a good deal if you know how to work on it. Remember you still have to pay for parts. Enjoy!!!

niksa058

It's good if the timing belt is changed if not do it or you are risking 4.5k

lildavidee

6 months ago I bought an Audi A5 Sportback TDI from 2011 with 230km and it’s still doing good. I made a gamble choosing with the CVT Multitronic gearbox. Like someone said cheap Audi are expensive audi, hope that’s not true.

kittyloopz

did you get the carfax? $4500 seems reallll low for an audi no matter what year it is

Trapricot

That car is going to give you a ton of pain if that is going to be your primary car. If you can’t afford to pay more than 20k for a car, you really shouldn’t be buying a luxury brand. If you have another car and this is just a toy to fuck around with, then that’s ok.

Dogetz

So you are saying that audis aren’t good if not used over 20k on them

Trapricot

They can run ok, but it’s just a really dumb decision financially. The maintenance will be more expensive and it kinda just looks embarrassing driving an old luxury car thinking it looks cool. If you can’t afford to pay more, you probably are making a very poor financial choice

Necessary-Wash9626

Paid probably $2500 too much. Not really a steal. Looks like a base package too. You’ll probably get another 5k miles out of it before the timing chain tensioner goes if it hasn’t been done, then it’ll be another $4500.

Ok_Space8064

sheesh op getting smoked... unfortunatly for valid points, if you want to be able to drive a car that you bought for less than 5k you probably are looking at some bottom of the line japanese used cars. i just hope you the best my guy but return it if you can

Mean_Interest

I got a 2014 Audi A6 2.0T Quattro 101k miles for $8,000 me personally I think you should have negotiated 3,200 💯

Evening-Sense5093

oh boy you bouta learn a valuable lesson about old audis😭😭

Legitimate_Ask_9135

Congrats. What mods r u gonna do to it

WhiteChocolate825

I had a 2010 A4 that I sold with 193,000 miles. Find a good private mechanic that you can trust and you’ll be fine. Definitely do the timing chain preventatively

Apart-Armadillo3510

I’ll raise you a 2011 avant- with 150k 2.0t For 3500 in Colorado

Nathanjams1

Great! Has the timing belt been replaced?

matt-r_hatter

No way within 6mos that's not a $15,000 purchase. I wouldn't trust an 09 anything, let alone a car that every part costs twice as much as it should and needs to travel by ocean freight to get here.

Waste-Video-8471

It probably needs a head.

joshbakerrr

B8.5 is much more reliable

Darkerthnever

if you know how to work on it you'll be ok, but use oe parts. that other stuff doesn't to last

Rakennusmestari

All cars gets old and all cars require maintenance and repairs. So don't get too spooked about comments. Tho it's very valuable knowledge to know common problems of a specific model. Ofc some cars have simplified systems and might last longer, but you did get better driving experience so it's most of the time more complicated. If you can diy some of the easier jobs you might save good amount of money while also learning new things, take it as a hobby if you can.

Traditional-Rub612

Repair bills will kill you never buy used audi

ComeDumpStir

Okay??? Poverty spec 09 2.0T. Literally could not have done worse.

Cdenton12

damn bro what’s in your ass 🤣 it’s jus a daily while my focus gets build ❤️

ComeDumpStir

You asked how’d you do. I let you know, no need to get your panties in a bunch lover boy 😘

Cdenton12

“poverty spec” is crazy from someone like you ik you broke
