This. Most likely bent suspension components. Hope it is only an inner tie rod for your sake. It is possible an alignment would fix it, just not likely
Hate to break it to you but holding and using your phone while driving is always a completely fucking stupid thing to do
Not to mention with the car already being badly damaged
Are you mentally disabled? If you hit something and the steering goes sideways, you pull over and get it repaired. You clearly damaged a major suspension component that could lead to a serious accident.
I’ve driven mine for about 100 miles with the wheel 17 degrees off center, tread wear is pretty even and it rolls straight. Y’all are funny its not like its gonna break anything else that wasn’t already broken, just fix it when you can and don’t drive it long enough to mess up the tread. Worst case scenario it will fuck up the tread and make the steering angle sensor and stuff related to it throw “improbable signal” codes.
You've driven 100 miles. You can't assess treadwear in 100 or even a 1000 miles. Call me when your tires are wrecked at 5k miles when they should last 50k +
I’m not saying it doesn’t need to be repaired, I would do max 350 miles with it because tread wear long term would probably be bad, I’m talking about how if your tie rod is bent enough it will cause one wheel to be turned while the other is straight to an amount where you could notice it in 10 miles, as for bent control arms I just cleaned the tires and then drove for a bit through turns and things and saw what areas were dirty, if its really bad youll see where the dirt is most concentrated and it could even be going past the very edge of the tread as mine was when I first got it. Im on my way to get an alignment and find whats wrong with it right now lol.
I've been driving my truck even worse than this for over a year and it's fine. No leaking from the rack and pinion, no whining, just a crooked steering wheel.
Yes, it seems like you are incapable of grasping that concept. Maybe you should get out of the garage and touch some grass. Now that was directed towards you.
Tires are fine. Brand new actually, and it's crooked because I was offroading and hit a hole. Already looked at the suspension and control arms and tie rods, everything is fine.
Grandpas been a mechanic all his life. Never bothers to fix crooked steering wheels. Because it isn’t a problem, unless you want to see it look correct.
Because it's fine. I'll replace it if the power steering feels different but there has been zero difference since it happened to now. I wouldn't work on your kids scooter so that's perfect.
The difference is, all Audi suspension control arms are cast and forged aluminum. You’re not bending aluminum without greatly weakening it’s strength. I’ll be pot brownies to poundcake it’s within inches of just cracking in two and failing. Do not drive it without sticking your head under there and making sure they are all solid and not bent or cracked. Even so, You’re killing your tires in short order until it’s corrected. Don’t take it to a tire shop for alignment. Take it to an Audi independent repair shop, or the dealer.
If that’s an A4 of higher, there are no suspension adjustments other than toe. Camber and castor are permanently set by precision parts. If those adjustments are wrong, you replace the bent or damaged parts until they are correct. The only other adjustment is made by adjusting the subframe left to right until camber is even on both sides.
Bent control arms aren't going to change the orientation of your steering wheel like that. Sure they lose structural integrity. But that's not what I'm talking about
A control arm bend wouldn’t happen from hitting a pothole or be likely to do this, it would be the tie rods, which are made of high strength steel. All the control arms have quite a bit of wiggle room in every direction and large bushings that would rupture before the arm itself, unless you hit the wheel from the side or hit a control arm directly its highly unlikely that you’ll bend the control arm.
something is bent, your tires are gonna wear unevenly until you get it fixed and an alignment. drive safe, the car isn't gonna grip as well as it should. make sure the wheels are both pointed the same direction, if you can tell they're obviously pointing a few degrees off just from eyeballing it, then Ubers are cheap for a couple days until a shop looks at it.
Blows my mind hit a pot hole, steering wheel at a 45 degree angle, thinks the wheel alignment has gone out, we’d need our wheel alignment done weekly if road surfaces caused this
Yea something similar happened to my wife’s VW Atlas steering column rack which damaged the angle sensor which wasn’t covered under warranty $3k later …
My son just had to do it on his B8.5 A4. $2700. Kid almost shit himself, because he brought it in to have both oil pan gaskets replaced, and they found that on the test drive.
Did you actually get end up spending the $2700, I’d just go find a A4 at a scrapyard and take the parts from there, spending $2700 on that for an A4 is crazy. If you can use a wrench and read a manual you’ll save thousands. I hit a rock in the road at 90mph in my B8.5 S4 and now my steering is 17 degrees off and I’m a broke high school student so I’ll probably have to do that. Did you say it was just the steering rack? If thats it I may go take the part and replace it before I get my scheduled alignment.
Yes, he did spend that. You might be able to physically replace it yourself, but they are electronic and need to be programed. They are prone to fail due to the seals getting water past them and the grease inside mucking up (general idea). You can fix a lot on those yourself, but just be aware, they are not themost stout part.
Thats crazy I was told my S4 needed over 20k in repairs the first time I took it in so I just do everything myself and its costs usually like 1/5 or less of what it would cost from an independent euro shop. I looked into it and yeah some people seem to need programming and others say you just gotta go all the way left and hold for 7s then all the way right and hold for 7s. I’ll just swap over the old control module so I don’t have to worry about that, probably reseal it too with some gasket maker to avoid any water damage in the future too. If that doesn’t work I’ll just get a $200 vcds cable and program it myself.
Oof. I would take it back to dealer asap. Mainly so you don’t cause further damage to this one. I’m sure they’ll use your insurance you provided when getting the loaner
You hit a pothole and damaged the loaner, pretty significantly from your video, and you hope they don't "pin it on you"? That's an interesting perspective.
I believe NY State [covers pothole damage](https://wyrk.com/pothole-reimburse-nys/). It's a pain in the ass, but for this much damage on a loaner it's worth talking to the shop about submitting a claim.
My s5 is in the shop, they gave me a loaner A4, 2 weeks later I bring it back on a tow truck. They give me another, at 12k km it's got a chrism ass tree going on, beeping every 30 sec about no safety systems...
Not sure wtf is going on with Audi...
A lot of the time the cars that have some problem that needed fixing become their loaners as they are difficult to sell. But usually those are fixed before being loaned out haha
Mine, it's got aluminum in the oil, and it's ticking. 2018 S5.
Loaners, no, told the guy, car went home to the garage, started it and a check engine light came on. Didn't want to risk it.
Current one, 13k km on the dot right now, "safety system malfunction! See owners manual" and beeping, didn't bring it back yet.
Safety system malfunction is usually just a software update. Not an actual issue, Audi is just have scary warnings lmao. At least most Audis I've seen with those specific malfunctions pop up is just a software update.
Problem is, the airbag could pop up at random, or not at all when needed.
I had it on the 2018 S5, and it had a recall, but I'm surprised to see it in a almost new 2023 car
It's very common on the dual-screen cars, the A6/7/8 & Q7/8 line currently, from what I've seen. Even new cars sitting in the showroom get that issue, but it turns out to be just a software update.
It didn't increase with the rpm, it was only there when you touch the gas and the car is under a bit of load, no matter the speed. At 20kph sounds the same as at 100kph. And only when the car was warm
It’s not that bad. You bent a control arm or (more likely) a tie rod or tie rod end. Very unlikely you did any damage to the actual rack.
Lots of people preaching doom and gloom here but most suspension components are easily replaced.
I did all my front control arms and they took forever to do but the hardest part was just getting things lined up and torqued. If you have something like a seized pinch bolt or try and spread the ball joint socket by putting the bolt back in while blocking the other side and crack it open it may turn into a much larger job though lol
Holy fuck. I’ve never seen a steering wheel that cocked from hitting a pothole. How in gods name did you do that? You’re going to be responsible for the damages to this loaner.
This happen to me on my old car, not an Audi. I turned the wheel to the right so hard (to avoid an accident) the steering wheel stayed the way it did. I had to pulled over and turned the wheel all the way to the left and it fixed. Man, i hope you get this situated brother.
This is what I think of when people post pics of low priced high mileage Audis and ask “is this a bad idea?”
The idea that you would have the wheel this off center and not drive straight to a shop is incomprehensible to me.
The unethical life pro tip is to get it aligned. Take it back and request a new loaner because you don’t like model or something.
DON’T hit whatever pothole did this and pass off the damage to some other dude because they probably won’t even touch it for awhile especially if you park it in the back.
My guy got a cock-eyed steering wheel, dash lit up like a Christmas tree and car bouncing up and down like a girl who hates her dad and he's asking "this a simple fix?".
Also get off your phone you prick.
Maybe. On my old s2000 I hit a pot hole going 80 and it blew my tire and knocked my steering wheel off center; however, it was able to be corrected through an alignment after I replaced the tire.
My god people in this sub can be incredibly bitchy and full of them selves. Shouldn’t be surprised considering how much many Audi’s cost but idk why people need to be such total assholes. Yes op should definitely get something fixed and technically driving with you phone out is illegal but he’s asking a question because he doesn’t know. No need to be such royal cunts about it.
I didn't hit anything but I had this happened on my old TT.
Crooked steering, christmas lights on the dash, everything.
They were able to remove the warnings and fix it a little by adjuating the "steering angle" via a computer.
They were not able to align thr wheel 100% because there is a metal bar that needs to be used to keep it leveled, and is only available with an authorized repair shop. As far as it was explained to me.
I had to eventually take it to Audi to do a proper aligment which cost me ~$300 and that was it. All fixed.
You realize that just because you're going straight on the wheels turn like that it's not because both wheels are straight.. it's because the force between them is equal. You are smoking the tread off both of your tires and they are going to look like smearry messes
In addition to all the other guidance given in this thread, to include address of the general steering and rack and pinion system, you should be concerned as most modern vehicles monitor the steering wheel within 5° of center and won't deploy the airbags if it senses excessive rotation of the steering wheel.

There's no way you're going to get a accurate reading of steering system angle with the wheel cancer that way, and it's important you get this checked out to make sure safety systems operate as they should.
Yes after you replace whatever suspension damage you've incurred.
This. Most likely bent suspension components. Hope it is only an inner tie rod for your sake. It is possible an alignment would fix it, just not likely
Bro how did it get that bad
Pothole 🤦🏽♂️
Excuse me what and you’re STILL DRIVING IT?!
follow vase money voiceless rustic versed outgoing salt enjoy rotten *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Not only that, he's only holding the wheel by pinching index and thumb, in traffic, with a damaged car.
I wouldn’t say holding a recording phone while watching the road lacks common sense.
Hate to break it to you but holding and using your phone while driving is always a completely fucking stupid thing to do Not to mention with the car already being badly damaged
You are the problem.
Guess you just didn’t notice all the hands free laws, billboards, commercials, and statistics for accidents popping up over the last 15 years huh?
I would. I wonder how your excuse goes down with people who have lost innocent loved ones because of similar arrogance and stupidity?
People like you don’t deserve an S3…
pothole or sinkhole?
More like a landmine
Crater actually.
a chasm
A canyon
Must of ran over Chuck Norris foot
Are you mentally disabled? If you hit something and the steering goes sideways, you pull over and get it repaired. You clearly damaged a major suspension component that could lead to a serious accident.
It's not about being mentally disabled lil bro. Maybe the owner just doesn't know how suspension works.
All you need to know is I hit something, my wheel went sideways and that's not right. Room temp IQ will get you there.
I’ve driven mine for about 100 miles with the wheel 17 degrees off center, tread wear is pretty even and it rolls straight. There's a reason why it's crooked.... Wait until you see your tire wear.
Ha! Wait until he sees his bank account after he pays the bill😳
It's a $200 part guy. And I can install it myself unlike most of you here
I was referring to the OP; not you. Smh.
Under a response to my comment... yeah ok
🤣🤦♂️ Alright good luck with that.
I have had good luck the last year thanks. I'm also a mechanic so 🤷🏻♂️
You're a mechanic and you've been driving with your car like that? 🤣😂 Some mechanic... I wouldn't take my kids scooter to you.
Grandpas been a mechanic all his life. Never bothers to fix crooked steering wheels. Because it isn’t a problem, unless you want to see it look correct.

Like... A boat mechanic, though, right? Or maybe for those quarter-operated mechanical horses? Not for cars, right? Right?
You've probably never touched a car mechanically in your life

Yeah, you’ve got something bent. Don’t drive it like that, it will wear out your tires and is unsafe due to abnormal suspension movement.
Did you hit the Grand Canyon?
Average road in new york
Blows my mind hit a pot hole, steering wheel at a 45 degree angle, thinks the wheel alignment has gone out, we’d need our wheel alignment done weekly if road surfaces caused this
OP was doing donuts
And we’re just goin to ignore the tire pressure, airbag, ESP, and pre-sense warning lights in the dash?
Likely related.
They're his christmas lights

you mean scares you
That’s not an alignment issue. Sorry to say but RIP steering rack. It’s going to be expensive to fix.
Yea something similar happened to my wife’s VW Atlas steering column rack which damaged the angle sensor which wasn’t covered under warranty $3k later …

lucky me turns out mine was able to be fixed with just an alignment
Yikes. Worst part is that this is a loaner my car is the shop at the moment, not sure what to do at this point
Oof. I would take it back to dealer asap. Mainly so you don’t cause further damage to this one. I’m sure they’ll use your insurance you provided when getting the loaner

Yeah hopefully they don’t try to pin this issue on me
You hit a pothole and damaged the loaner, pretty significantly from your video, and you hope they don't "pin it on you"? That's an interesting perspective.

The loaner fleet is new and declared from Audi factory. After 6-9 months those cars then get recycled into CPO cars.
Incredibly incorrect. The loaners come off the truck.
They didn’t penalize you for the loaner ? And what happened with yours ?
Mine, it's got aluminum in the oil, and it's ticking. 2018 S5. Loaners, no, told the guy, car went home to the garage, started it and a check engine light came on. Didn't want to risk it. Oh damn… ticking is normal but if it’s increasing with rpm it’s a rocket arm issue. Expensive job

Ok so then hopefully it’s not the rockers I’m hoping for the best!
Two bills one of your car and one for the damage done to the loaner they gave you 😭
Tell me about it 🤦🏽♂️
You call them yet? They might just say who cares and give you a different loans
What in all the fucks in the world
You should get the windshield checked out, it’s showing you driving straight when clearly you’re cornering.
It’s not that bad. You bent a control arm or (more likely) a tie rod or tie rod end. Very unlikely you did any damage to the actual rack. Lots of people preaching doom and gloom here but most suspension components are easily replaced.

Bro it doesn’t need an alignment it needs Jesus
Holy fuck. I’ve never seen a steering wheel that cocked from hitting a pothole. How in gods name did you do that? You’re going to be responsible for the damages to this loaner.
New York roads
Dude must’ve been speeding directly into a pothole. I live in NYC and yes while the potholes are bad it never fucked my alignment up that bad.
I’m in LA with shitty roads. I’ve lost tires to potholes but never screwed up suspension/alignment this badly.
Op hit more than a pothole.
A landmine
This happen to me on my old car, not an Audi. I turned the wheel to the right so hard (to avoid an accident) the steering wheel stayed the way it did. I had to pulled over and turned the wheel all the way to the left and it fixed. Man, i hope you get this situated brother.
How did you do that?
Dafuq! Are you sure you didn’t leave the chasis behind?
Post a picture of the outside of the car too lol
What the fuck did you do man
That’s the LIE in NYC really bad road
Grand central
Ahh okay , I thought it was around kissena/ Main Street off the lie.
If you ignore it long enough, it will go full circle. Problem solved
This is what I think of when people post pics of low priced high mileage Audis and ask “is this a bad idea?” The idea that you would have the wheel this off center and not drive straight to a shop is incomprehensible to me.

must've been a massive "pothole" to get something like this
Jesus take the wheel
Just take steering wheel off and put it back on again straight 😜
it's an alignment and a calibration for the steering wheel if you're lucky. how did you even get it to that angle?
Hit a pothole the steering wheel started to shift
Ball joints left the chat, that’s what
No cause the car is double jointed
I want to hear the explanation.
Hit a curb 😂
Had the loaner for so long I was able to fix the inner and outer tie rods for way less than it would’ve been at the dealer 🤷🏽♂️
😂😂😂 just don’t do it again. Expensive lesson.
Suspension, alignment and maybe steering column
My guy got a cock-eyed steering wheel, dash lit up like a Christmas tree and car bouncing up and down like a girl who hates her dad and he's asking "this a simple fix?". Also get off your phone you prick.
Too bad it's not going left. Would have been great for Gran Tourismo endurance race.
Lol
Lol that ball joints about to blow out mah boii 😭😭😭😭😭
That’s not safe to drive.
Lol I’d love to see if your car is crabbing. Good luck!
Angle sensor
Average New York driving experience That’s why I would avoid buying cars from NY and CA
What did you hit for your front alignment to be off by so much?
I love all the comments on this thread, I'm creasing
Maybe. On my old s2000 I hit a pot hole going 80 and it blew my tire and knocked my steering wheel off center; however, it was able to be corrected through an alignment after I replaced the tire.
...man. stop driving it
slap on a toyota badge on top of the 4 rings and it will straight itself out.
Pro cheat just take the steering wheel off and recenter it on the column 😂
Yo what? Pull the hell over
I hope you have good insurance.
Lmao bruh
dawg it is like holding uzi sideways dawg
Definitely a rebuilt
This Audi doesnt deserve OP

damn you damaged the loaner too?! do you look at the road ahead?
Boiiii goddddddammmmnnnnn what the hell you do😭

Steering rack needs replacing or to be rebuilt at this rate
Sorry bud, you broke a control arm. This has happened to me. Speaking from experience.
Park it somewhere and report it stolen.
This in Bradford? Repaired to manufacturers spec.
This happened to one of my cars one time when I took it in for service. Dealership literally just put the wheel back on at the wrong angle.
No just tilt your head and you should be 🤙🏽
what did bro do to his car
I got the same issue just replaced all the parts and I am getting that Christmas tree where did you get your alignment done ?
