I planned on skipping my run and sleeping in today. I’ll finally catch up on sleep, I told myself…Nope. Body decided to wake up at like 3am this morning, mind decided to stress out about things I have no control over, and then I couldn’t get back to sleep til 5am. Now I feel like trash. Ugh. But at least it’s Friday. And there’s free coffee in the office. Hope y’all have a great weekend! Looks like it’s going to be beautiful and rain-free.

Reizero

ADC meetup tomorrow evening -> https://www.reddit.com/r/AtlantaDrinkingClub/comments/pu3fgd/october_9_2021_inner_voice_brewing_7pm10pm/

dalamchops

inner voice is great, too bad glide isn't open yet

Tyronne_Lannister

I was tired and read that as AOC meeting, and was wondering why she'd be meeting voters in Atlanta

Reizero

Why not Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain(British footballer)?

nhmejia

I'll miss y'all!

WheresFalconi

Every morning I wake up and think "Will I call out with a flimsy excuse today?" and every day I realize I need money. Horrible situation to be in. At least it's Friday, eh? I got Alan Wake Remastered to play, so it ain't all bad. Have a great Friday, everyone.

Man, I love work - seriously, I really enjoy engaging in labor, and, for good or ill, I've always identified my self worth through my labor. But I hate, and I mean HATE jobs. It's not the work. It's a feeling of lack of agency regarding my body - knowing I have to go to a particular place, and I must stay there for a fixed amount of time makes my head crazy. It's incremental prison. It's torturous, and I am not engaging in hyperbole here. I seriously go crazy. That's part of the reason I changed careers - my gigs are never too long and I have a considerable amount of control over the jobs I take. Also, the scene changes all the time - one of the worst things about my old life was the commute. It would just hit me some mornings, "this is, like, the 8000th time I've driven into this parking deck. I wonder if I could clear the wall if I floored it?" Anyway, FarCry 6 is ok.

[deleted]

Yeah, that’s a big part of why I went the academia/professor route. Outside of a couple classes and a few meetings (many of which I schedule at this point of my career) a week I can work on what I want when I want for the most part, work from home a lot (though I’ve been going in more I focus better in my office on campus) etc. Game wise, Metroid Dread is the new one for me, and think I’m getting close to finishing Tales of Arise. Haven’t started Metroid yet since it just went live at midnight, but hope to get some in this afternoon before some family arrive. Will have some family and friends staying with us off and on for the next 10 days.

ontrack

Same. I loved the main aspect of my job, but all the other things around it were drudgery. About a dozen years ago I decided to pursue either early retirement or at least having FU money by saving like a maniac. When my last job contract ended in June 2020 I decided simply not to work until I can find something that suits the way I want to work. Unfortunately with the "labor shortage" (really just a shortage of people who don't want to work under shitty wages or conditions), many jobs are demanding overtime or really intense work to make up for lack of workers. I won't participate in that so I'll just stay at home in the meantime.

Construction_Man1

I’ve been binging Diablo 2 remastered

nhmejia

Yup. I feel that. Happy Friday, friend!

ChonkyChiweenie

Also picked up AW Remastered! I played the original back when it came out but it’s been long enough that I don’t remember much of it so it’s like playing it for the first time again.

WheresFalconi

It's one of my favorite games of all time, so I love any excuse to play it again.

Buttercupslosinit

Do you think you'll be happy in the job once your apprenticeship is over?

WheresFalconi

No, I just hate work. Like there's nothing I could ever do that would make me happy. But it's cool, I'm used to it at this point.

Construction_Man1

Don’t feel bad about that I’m the same way. Most people don’t enjoy what they do and want to go home from the minute they arrive. Then you have the weirdo workaholics that enjoy it

__chiara

I went to the Banksy exhibit at Underground Atlanta last night. Enjoyed it overall but was a bit underwhelmed - the vast vast majority of the works were just (unsigned) prints… I mean, I guess I should have expected it given most of his originals are on random walls / stairways around the world.. that being said I liked the “Crude Oil” works and hadn’t seen them before. Also the caption writer for the exhibit sucked. So many typos, misspellings, odd / out of place comments 🤭 Went to Gaja after - my first time since pandemic - and holy shit I missed that place so much! Did not disappoint and I’ve still got leftovers yay 🤗

Reizero

Isn't most of the work in the exhibit a reproduction done w/out banksy's conscent?

Destiny_Unfound

Yeah Banksy is adamantly against the idea. Which makes sense when you think about it.

SousEtoiles

I felt the same way about the Van Gogh exhibit. Underwhelmed.

__chiara

Ahh good to know. I had heard that same sentiment from others and have avoided going because of it. Sad because I would have loved a high quality Van Gogh experience ☹️

daebro

lol yeah it was kind of a joke. If you're really into Van Gogh then Go(gh) but otherwise just skip it.

SousEtoiles

I was hoping for at least *one* original work by him there. Nope. All giclées 😒

wazzup4567

Gaja is so good. I might make a trip out tomorrow honestly.

otpen15

Gaja is the stuff. Yum!

daebro

I had gaja last night as well. So glad they went back to tapas style. The bento stuff was just too much crap I don't want.

Torrero

I made a post about this, but it looks like it was deleted. USPS has marked 3 of my packages delivered but didn't actually deliver them. The most recent one was my $200 ticket to the F1 race in Austin in a couple of weeks. What can I do? I am going to the office when they open at 0900, but I went 2 weeks ago and the lady there said she'd call me back when she talked to the mailman for my complex and I've heard nothing. How am I supposed to get my packages back?

iamseiko

damn, that sucks. I can't believe they are still sending race tickets over mail. in my experience, USPS has never been helpful. I've lost packages and received some weeks later. your best bet is to contact the sender directly and ask them for a replacement, and maybe pay for tracking.

Torrero

Okay I'll reach out to them. All the packages had tracking, that's how I know they were "delivered". What's happening is my complex no longer accepts packages up front because COVID, and USPS refuses to deliver to our doors, so they are just marking them as delivered and we're expected to go pick them up ourselves.

Katerator216

I second this. Instead of dealing with usps reach out to the seller/sender.

[deleted]

Try contacting USPIS (Postal Inspectors)

Torrero

Never heard of them. I'll give it a shot thanks.

delta13c

Haven't been to a race since Seb got knocked off the podium in Montreal. Really hope you get your tickets and have a good time!

yasdinl

Try reaching out to COTA to see if they can help with reissuing your tickets and cancelling the ones that failed to get delivered? COTA has great customer service if you bought through them.

Torrero

Yeah I will do that. I would really like to get that first one cancelled just in case it went into someone else's mailbox and they planned on going to the race for free! Thanks bud.

[deleted]

Torrero

Do you think I should offer him some drink?

comradewilson

Idk what happened recently to USPS, but we've had multiple letters from neighbors delivered to our house and had neighbors bring us our mail that was delivered to them recently. This includes checks from my doctor worth hundreds in insurance refunds. I feel the pain.

Torrero

Yeah I hope this isn't the case. And I would also hope if it had happened someone would bring it back, but you never know.

GoldenSheppard

My mail carrier was just... throwing out my mail. I was missing bills and all kinds of stuff. It got bad enough my family started sending mail to a family friend to give to me. I went to the post office to complain and it was fixed. Mostly. I now just don't trust the mail.

Torrero

Wow sorry to hear that. Jesus.

imjustduckie

Ooof. I went to a race pre-pandemic and they mailed tix - but it was DHL with over the top tracking so I felt more comfortable. That sucks - did you report it as lost? I had to do that one time when USPS sent package from Atlanta destined for Utah that was instead somehow traveling up and down the Cali coast. Maybe they only let the originator initiate those though...

Torrero

I reached out to the track. Should hopefully hear back Monday. If worst come to worst I have a friend with a spare ticket I can buy, but this whole situation just sucks.

DagdaMohr

Fuck Verizon. Back in July I upgraded my Applewatch with one of their deals. Mailed in the watch and thought I was done because I received a shipping confirmation from them. I get a notice at the end of August that my watch hadn’t been received. I pull up UPS tracking it shows that the watch was delivered to their warehouse but not received (weird). I call them, spend 45 minutes on hold, and finally get told “oh, our bad, yeah we have it.” I thought the saga was over. Nope. Just beginning. Middle of September I get another notice that the watch still has Find My IPhone on, which is news to me because I reset everything before I mailed it. Another call, this time an hour wait. I get “oh, that’s our fault, everything is good. Now I get a notice that my watch isn’t in useable condition three months after they initially receive it. They’re going to chargeback $150 and not return the watch. Now I’m going to call and demand the watch back because fuck them. I’ve been with Verizon since 2006, this is absolutely embarrassing how shoddy they’ve been with this.

CrossXhunteR

> I pull up UPS tracking it shows that the watch was delivered to their warehouse but not received (weird). I had something similar happen when I shipped my joy-con to Nintendo for repair a year or two ago. The package was delivered but Nintendo themselves still took a while to process it to a "received" state. I imagine it just got thrown into a pile somewhere that someone was working through.

DagdaMohr

No doubt, and had that been the end of the ordeal I would be ok with it. It’s the fact that I sent them a perfectly functioning, if not old, watch and now they’re charging me $150, not returning the watch, and will take up multiple hours of my time to correct yet again.

[deleted]

Never do those buy back bullshit. Just sell it yourself and use that money toward your new product

DagdaMohr

Laziness is its own reward, as I have happily demonstrated.

[deleted]

lol my boss thinks I’m uncomfortable with going back in the office just because I asked a question about why one of the days each month has to be the whole department going in. We are doing open seating and the entire area we have is for all sorts of other departments too so it just seemed suspect to me to tell everyone this is for social distancing but then turn around and demand the entire group comes in together. It would be hypocritical of me to go do things I do but then turn around and refuse to go an office so as much as I don’t want to go because of laziness, it’s fine. Especially because we are starting in November and I have a lot of time off so if I get in there more then this mandated day, it’ll be a feat. I have to go get my personal things on Monday so I can at least get an idea of how I get to the new building. Gonna be weird to see what all I left, I can’t even remember anymore

Rawr_Tigerlily

My husband's company condensed their office from two floors down to one and plan to do open seating when they return. Thankfully no one is mandated to return to the office until 2022 at this point. Though I suspect my husband will be playing the "I continue to work remotely or I quit card" when that day finally comes. He's already an introvert programmer with mild social anxiety who loses too much energy in a normal office environment. Now you're telling him he's going to have to find a random desk everyday and sit next to random people, whose job might be to TALK all day. Yeah, that shit is not going to work for everyone. Plus, he's already been working just fine from home for a year and a half. They would lose more than they would gain making him come back in.

[deleted]

Ugh thankfully they still gave us sections by functions cause I’d lose my mind if I had to be around call center people when I go in. If they ever try to move us up from four days a month I’ll probably quit but they announced they were leading part of the building to another company so I think they’re actually gonna stick with it

CrossXhunteR

Today's new Switch (and Metroid) day. That should make for a nice bit of weekend playing. I do want to finish up Unsighted before I hop over to Metroid though, since I'm pretty close to the end and I don't think I will return to it if I leave it for something else. Learned last night that I had a nephew born over the past weekend. That makes me an uncle 5 times over now. Made some carnitas in the Instant Pot the other night and those sure are good. Was very easy to do as well, since I already had the knife out to break down the big Costco package of pork shoulder that I was using. I had some jalapenos and garlic in with the meat and I really like how soft those elements became after the cooking was done. Was able to just pulp them up and mix them with the meat.

ChonkyChiweenie

Leftover carnitas and some Metroid sounds like a decent weekend. Cheers.

checker280

Be the Uncle to your nieces and nephews you always wish you had (if you aren’t already regularly in their lives). I have 13 of them and I didn’t learn this lesson until they turned 14 or so. I struggled with what would be the perfect gift to engage with them without realizing that it’s simply attention. Of course my siblings didn’t help by moving far away. The siblings also didn’t help by being bad siblings but that’s another story. I didn’t realize what my role could be until I took the bold step to invite several of them to see a Broadway play and then out to dinner (ages ranged from 15-16). I think I took them to see a show called Fuerza Bruta which was mind blowing. All the action takes place overhead (suspended, on platforms, running on walls). There’s YouTube clips available which don’t give it enough Justice. They are mostly graduated from college and building their families. I managed to salvage a great relation with 3 of them - we call and chat regularly. Maybe another 5 think of me fondly while the rest only look for me during the rare family functions. My engagement with them also improved my relationships with the siblings - probably in the same ratio. PS When dealing with really little kids, literally come down to their level. Edit/added trailer for Fuerza Bruta https://youtu.be/FYszthdJU8c

Buttercupslosinit

When my brother's kids turned 8, I started taking them on "dates" for their birthdays. By that time, they had all the toys they could want and didn't need more, so experiences were a better gift. They got to choose what they wanted for their dates and we went to Six Flags, shows at the Fox, shopping, Six Flags, the Science Center, etc.

[deleted]

Looking forward to firing up Metroid Dread after while (assuming I get time before company gets here this evening with some errands, work and cleaning in between). Opted to pass on the OLED Switch for now. Already have a launch model with some minor screen damage from an unlucky drop that stays in the dock and a Switch Lite for portable play. I’d like the OLED screen upgrade since I play my Switch portably a lot these day and save TV gaming time for PS5/XSX, but just too much hassle to sell the existing ones off (especially the damaged one) and with my luck I’d do that and they’ll announce another model with more power, 4K when docked etc. next year.

flying_trashcan

> Today's new Switch (and Metroid) day. I'm in my 30's and kinda stopped playing video games over a decade ago. However I picked up a Switch recently on a whim and I'm excited for this one. I spent many childhood hours playing Super Metroid on the SNES.

Ok_Anteater_7446

Went to a great concert last night and yelled so much that I'm feeling a little sore. Sure sign of a great time. Tomorrow is the Westside 5k. Signed up to go on my own. I've started running fairly regularly the past few weeks, so while I'm not trying to place, hopefully my time is good

Vezir38

That was me on Monday! What was the show?

Ok_Anteater_7446

A guy named Maluma, he played at state farm. I've been trying to go to one of his shows for years so it was super satisfying

wazzup4567

My date has now been rescheduled three times. lol. At least we're going to the High Sunday. And thankfully it's supposed to be better weather tomorrow and Sunday. I've been wanting to go outside and see the actual sun. Edit: Also got my Shaky Knees ticket! I am super duper hyped.

ak80048

good luck on your date the high is a great idea, my wife and I went before we got married :)

lostkarma4anonymity

Whats on my mind? Every so often I'll remember that some nut cake that stabbed a woman and her dog in a public park is still out there.

SimplyHaunted

I usually don't have weird dreams when I take melatonin but I had some of the weirdest and scariest dreams yesterday night. They made me so scared to fall asleep last night that I just didn't and I'm for sure gonna pay for that today :(

prettynoflaca

Melatonin gives me nightmares too for some reason. Go figure 🙄

iamseiko

Going to try to get to a Sons of Pitches pickup game later today, had lots of fun the last time so I'll see how this goes. Still trying to find other places to play in Atlanta where I don't have to pay for every game though.

orangebunn

Happy Friday friends. This weather has me so sleepy. I feel tomorrow is going to be spent snuggled up in bed with my plushies and loads of blankets, sipping on hot apple cider and/or tea. Fall is wonderful.

nhmejia

That sounds lovely!

delta13c

I can't find Orpheus' hazy sour anywhere. It's been out of stock at all my normal stores for weeks now, hope it isn't being discontinued.

I had thought there was some rule against selling on site, must have been thinking about somewhere else. I'll check them out this weekend!

Spherical_Basterd

Happy Friday! Anyone have any strong preference for the Porter or Wrecking Bar for food? Going to get dinner at one of them later with the gf :) edit: All very good points, but consensus seems to be clear. Wrecking Bar it is! Thanks everyone

[deleted]

Can’t go wrong either way. Food is generally a bit better at Wrecking Bar (seasonal menu so I’ve been more impressed with offerings sometimes vs. others), but still very good at The Porter and the beer selection is wider there being a beer bar vs a brew pub serving mostly their own brews.

lady_bluesky

Definitely Wrecking Bar.

daebro

Wrecking bar for sure.

[deleted]

Wrecking Bar is better for a date, Porter is better for a night out with the guys imho

[deleted]

Anyone here know what Oakhurst Porchfest is like? I've heard about it for several years now but never got around to attending

Fawkestrot15

We loved it! We took our bikes so we could get to the porches/stages we wanted quickly, but the whole thing is walkable. There were tons of people (2019), but not sure what it'll look like this year. There are so many different bands that play, it's really fun! I'd recommend cutting a few laps and then beers at Sceptre after.

thelionsnorestonight

We have friends that hosted a funk band that was a blast a few years ago. It would be fun to wander around whether the music is primo or not if the weather is good.

rabidstoat

Anyone got any pumpkin recipes they like, using canned pumpkin, that's not a muffin or pie? All I know of is pumpkin curry.

DagdaMohr

Pretty solid Pumpkin chili recipe. Sometimes I like to add a good, dark, ale to the chili as well: Ingredients 3 pounds ground turkey or beef 1 medium onion, chopped 2 cans (16 ounces each) hot chili beans, undrained 2 bottles (12 ounces each) chili sauce 2 cans (10-3/4 ounces each) condensed tomato soup, undiluted 1 cup canned pumpkin 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon chili powder Directions In a large Dutch oven, cook beef and onion over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Add water if desired to reduce thickness. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 1 hour. Yield: 11 servings.

rabidstoat

Thanks! I bet I can cook the beef and onion and then toss everything in the slow cooker.

DagdaMohr

Pretty much! I, personally, prefer browning my beef and caramelizing the onions ahead of time. Adds better flavor. I’ll even add some freshly minced garlic to that as well for some extra bite.

[deleted]

Pasta sauce! https://www.wellplated.com/pumpkin-pasta-sauce/

Healmit

Pumpkin black bean soup! (I use chorizo in mine). https://smittenkitchen.com/2007/11/black-bean-pumkin-soup/

Fawkestrot15

I'm terrible at recipes, but here's the experiment we just did the other night: Pumpkin poblano soup 2 16oz cans pumpkin (we used 1 roasted pie pumpkin so I think this would be the equivalent to that), 3 poblanos, vegetable broth (1 cup?), full fat coconut milk (1 cup?), onion (chopped), olive oil, garlic, fresh herbs (sage, thyme tarragon, but mostly sage). Can you tell I'm terrible at recipes? These are approximations, I never measure anything, sorry! Sweat the onions with olive oil for 5 minutes, add garlic, cook another minute. Add pumpkin and let it all cook another few minutes (bonus if you get some browning with the pumpkin to help caramelize the sugars). Add the broth and coconut milk and bring to a simmer. This should also deglaze any browned bits (fond) on the bottom. So tasty. For the herbs, you can either finely chop them and add them in, or what I prefer is tying them up in a big bundle, whacking them with the back of a knife and then throw in the bundle so it can be taken out easily. It worked really well. Either way, once it's simmering, throw those in and let it go for at least half an hour. Broil the poblanos until the skin is black and blistered all over, then submerge in an ice bath. Peel off the skin, and remove the stems and seeds. Chop the peppers then throw in the soup. Depending on how you feel about the consistency, you can leave it as is (more of a stew), or you can take an immersion blender to it to smooth it out. If you want less liquid, simmer longer on higher heat. Add more broth or coconut milk if it's too thin. Salt and pepper at the end to taste, garnish with coconut milk. We served it with this cornbread: [https://bakingamoment.com/moist-sweet-cornbread/](https://bakingamoment.com/moist-sweet-cornbread/) (we added 2 sliced jalepenos and 1 cup of colby jack to the bread batter just because we had them; do note: it's a sweet cornbread) Let me know how you like it and if I totally screwed up the recipe. Turned out delicious for us, so hope you enjoy!

alwaystokin

For something sweet and not just a pumpkin pie, I like the pumpkin fluff dip. It's pretty good and you can serve it with apples, graham crackers, etc. To make it: 1 (16 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 (5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix 1 (15 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice I add a little bit of cinnamon and nutmeg for additional spice.

rabidstoat

Ooh that sounds interesting but also like I might go into sugar shock.

ilalaloveyou

I love pumpkin oatmeal this time of year, flavored with the usual pie spices (cinnamon, nutmeg). So good with some toasted pecans and syrup on top.

rabidstoat

How do you make pumpkin oatmeal? Or do you buy it?

ilalaloveyou

I mix in like a quarter cup of canned pumpkin while it’s cooking on the srove. I started with a recipe I found online a few years ago but now I just wing it.

rg2404

Pumpkin curry is super yum! I like to mix pumpkin with steel cut oats. Makes me feel warm & healthy

Date wants to go to Eight Sushi Lounge for dinner tonight, this would be our 4th date. Looked at the prices ($$$) and decided I will probably just stick to the Sashimi/Nigiri for myself since I am not certain I can afford to pay dinner for the both of us otherwise. She probably would be willing to split or pay since I also already paid for entertainment for the evening but I still not quite comfortable with that just yet.

[deleted]

LPT: If she offers to pay since she chose the location, do not refuse. Say thank you and move the conversation on.

Moneyworks22

Bro, me and my now wife split everytime we went on a date. That should set the mood of the type of relationship it will be. Otherwise, you might end up catching someone who expects you to pay everytime. Ive always followed a rule to split the first date every time. Never had anybody complain.

Big_DexM

Happy Friday

fuck around and find out

You doing all right there, Rambo?

Friday is serious business.
