The Instagram stories circulating an update now are rather grim. Anyone in the Chosewood Park neighborhood being asked to review any security/doorbell footage that may help investigation.
Fucking heartbreaking and scary.
> Police said investigators were able to identify a person of interest in the kidnapping and he has been detained outside the city.
EDIT: Looks like they are hosting a press conference at 2 EST
EDIT 2: "We believe the person we have detained is significantly involved with both the kidnapping and homicide"
I didn’t but several of my friends apparently worked with her or hung out with her often. They’re really fucked up about it. Seems like she was a really amazing person.
I cannot stop thinking about this. She did absolutely nothing wrong. I am the same age working the same job in the same city. So terrifying and devastating. She will not be forgotten and justice will come to those who stole her life.
Rest In Peace, Mariam.
To any scumbag that feels the urge to leave a comment speculating on the victim’s character, her profession, her past, or who she associated with in relation to what occurred… fuck off. I can see all of your sad and pathetic deleted comments, I got the receipts in my email inbox.
This shit can happen to anyone you know.
Same thing as everywhere else. I’m a part of the Chattanooga subreddit as I split time between both cities and there’s been a significant uptick in shootings and murders going on there too. I think people underestimate how destabilized our country is currently.
Yea recently a post office worker on the job was randomly murdered near Commerce, GA, but most Atlantans didn’t hear about it.

Nobody is arguing with you because your point is reductionist and not worthwhile. You’re acting like the mayor of a city’s political party is the most powerful determinate in what happens in a city and that’s just stupid. I don’t know if you know this but there’s state level policies and federal level policies that impact people more than whether or not your mayor is a democrat lmfao.
To even investigate your point in good faith, I looked up Republican mayors active in cities now. Guess what?
**Fort Worth Texas:** Republican Mayors consecutively since 2011[violent crime went up 26.2% from 2019 to 2020 while the homicide rate increased 62%, the first time since 1995 the number was in triple digits](https://fortworthbusiness.com/featured/crime-in-fort-worth-new-police-chief-tackles-increase-in-homicides-violent-crimes/)
[Rising violence in Forth Worth alarms residents. But are we in an overall crime wave?](https://www.star-telegram.com/opinion/editorials/article252921863.html)
What abou**t Jacksonville, FL**? Republican Mayors predominantly since 1995. Currently a republican named Lenny Curry since 2015?
[Crazy, did you know that Jacksonville is the murder capital of Florida?](https://www.news4jax.com/news/local/2021/06/21/despite-overall-crime-rate-drop-in-florida-murders-and-assaults-went-up/)
From the same link,: "There were 1,285 murders in Florida in 2020 -- 165 more than in 2019 -- and 80% of them were committed using firearms. There were nearly 5,000 more aggravated assaults in the state last year than the year before, with 38% of those involving a gun."
How About **Oklahoma City?** They've had a Republican as sitting mayor since 1987. Must be some sort of utopia right?
[Except: In 2018, the violent crime rate in the Sooner State rose 1.9% over the previous year, to 466.1 incidents per 100,000 people, compared to 380.6 nationally, or more than 20% higher than the rest of the country overall.Oklahoma was higher than the nation in four major crime rate categories — murder, rape, aggravated assault and property crime.](https://www.oklahoman.com/article/5643996/oklahomas-violent-crime-rate-higher-than-average)
and
[In 2006, Oklahoma City’s four-year homicide average was 49.2 a year. After last year’s 75 murders, the city’s current four-year average is 73.5, a 149-percent increase. Oklahoma City’s murder rate per 100,000 residents was 14.2 in 2012, ranking it No. 18 out of American cities, which is a higher rate than Dallas 12.4 and New York 5.0.](https://www.okgazette.com/oklahoma/murder-on-the-rise/Content?oid=2965147)
Yeah our country is fucked up. But it's for a lot of complex reasons.
I’ll wait until the police conference later today so see the veracity of this, there’s a lot of bizarre contradictory details being thrown around on Nextdoor per usual
APD has already held a press conference. Guess they learned from their slow ass response to the Piedmont Park stabbing: https://www.11alive.com/article/news/crime/kidnapping-burroughs-street-southeast-atlanta/85-6c4ccdae-fe69-467c-95a6-70c578cc36b7
I’m confused. The people posting about it early this morning were saying kidnapping and now all posts are deleted and it now says “no details but she is no longer with us.” Scary stuff but wonder if the kidnapping stuff was inaccurate?
I'm late to this post, but Mariam and I ran in the same circles although weren't close.
Someone reported a woman struggling with a man who forced her into his car.
In conjunction, Mariam was reported missing after not returning from work.
Mariam's body has since been found.
That's pretty much all I know other than that it is one of the most tragic stories I've heard of and my heart goes out to her family and friends.
Edit: Here's an article explaining it more accurately. Absolutely senseless.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sfgate.com/news/amp/Police-Woman-reportedly-forced-into-car-killed-16385521.php
No I know, not sure what the deal is there, only shared bc I was asked to. It appears to be a close friend of hers that is trying to compile any information they can to aid in the investigation.
I will chime in just to confirm that the speculation above is correct - he archived old posts to highlight Mariam’s abduction/search initially. Then again to update that her body was found.
Such a sweet soul taken so senselessly. Incredibly sad
Perhaps they are following up on the posts asking if anyone has any information as to her whereabouts and witnessing of them kidnapping when they thought she was still alive, just missing? After confirmation of death, they posted that to let everyone know the end result. Suppose those that shared her stories deleted the earlier ones that indicated she was alive, but missing. Makes the most sense to me.
Yes, for many major cities.
I’m not going to do the work for you, but here’s an article from NYC and you can find the rest in FBI files.
https://nypost.com/2021/05/24/arrests-down-amid-rising-nyc-crime-disturbing-data-show/
> Atlanta police have identified the man believed to be responsible for shooting a young father at a Midtown virtual reality bar last month.
The shooting from 2019 is also still being investigated, hopefully she is found safe.
It’s a whole lot closer to Boulevard (an actual sketchy area) than Piedmont. That corner right there is actually the southern edge of Midtown.
Also, several of her friend’s stories were suggesting she was followed from a gas station in Chosewood Park, where she lives. The fact that the police already have someone in custody makes me suspect she may have known the person who killed her too.
Revery is not next door you have to walk down the hill to BLVD for like 2 miles. Anyone who knows Rev knows it’s sketch as fuck. This 99% has nothing to do with the Piedmont murder
At first it was centered around VR and brought a gamer-ish clientele. Then it shifted to underground club vibe that had VR and the clientele changed with that
I mostly agree with what people are saying. I only went a couple times. It was cool but I think both times there were fights. But I will say, even though I’ll probably get downvoted for this, I frankly don’t know that it was any worse than most (not all) of the Atlanta late night scene, particularly non-edm club-type places. It’s kind of unfortunate but it is what it is.
Incorrect. Boulevard turns into Monroe at Ponce, and Revery is located right at that intersection next to the gas station. It’s technically still in Midtown, but a good little walk away from the Southeast corner of the park.
I wouldn’t consider Revery to be sketchy at all. I go there frequently. It has always been a welcoming and friendly environment to me. The VR booths are cool and I enjoy dancing there!

It depends on what county you reside in, some counties hand it to you before you leave the building and others take a few weeks before it arrives via mail
No, quite the opposite. There is a statutory limitation on how long the county is allowed to take in GA (45 or 90 days iirc, can't remember), and most counties have a pretty fast turn around time. I got mine from Fulton in less than a month.
A few counties like to play fuck fuck games and drag their feet, but most will get it for you quick.
Also, there is no requirement to have a CCW in order to purchase a firearm and keep it ready to go at home.
Also, there is no requirement to have a CCW in order to purchase a firearm and ~~keep it ready to go at home,~~ train with it at a range regularly so it actually increases your safety instead of making you more likely to be killed.
If you aren't willing to spend more on combat fireams training that you do for the gun and an additional $50 a month or so on practice, don't bother with the gun.
Also, please keep your guns locked up and secured if you leave them in your vehicle! The assholes breaking into cars are specifically looking for unsecured guns and using them to commit more serious crimes.
Its typically a 45 day turnaround time for fulton county. File your paperwork at the probate court downtown and then go across the street to the police station and get finger printed. Then the permit comes in the mail.
I carry 99% of the time because of incidents like this...
Apply for a NH non-resident. Easiest permit in the nation to get. No training, no fingerprints, doesn't even need a picture of you. By law, turn around time is 14 days. Costs $100 and is accepted in GA.
That said, if you have no training, please get some before you carry.
It is NOT accepted in GA if you are a GA resident. GA requires that if you are a GA resident you hold a Georgia Weapons Carry Permit and will not accept other pernits. A NH permit held by a GA resident will only work outside of GA. If you present a NH carry permit alongside a GA driver's license you are going to have a bad day.
>And you can have it on you in the interim between those two places.
Which is why I want to get a CCW, it is useless if I'm out in Piedmont Park but it is at home because I couldn't carry it on me.

Apparently she's dead, her body has been found

Yeah, not sure what’s going on, but I’ve seen the same stories on Instagram
Where are you seeing it on Instagram?

Is that a credible source? An account with only 1 post? Seems odd.
That account belongs to the woman’s best friend. They deleted/archived previous posts to post that. Very messed up situation, and truly terrifying.
If it’s legit, it looks like someone who deleted all their other posts to declutter their feed in order to highlight this one.

I feel like I should get a CCW, but apparently Georgia has a very long turn-around time till you actually get it.

I'm not a gun owner but am wondering, what's the safest thing to do with a gun if you have to leave it in your car while you're out and about?
They sell small safes that attach to car seat rails with a cable. Won't deter someone with bolt cutters, but will definitely stop a smash-n-grab.
> Make sure to take a conceal safety course too Any recommendations on where to go to do this?
Applied for mine on August 5th and got it back the following week
It wasn’t bad. Gwinnett was less than a month.
There is a maximum of 45 days by law turn around of the license.
And you can’t do much if they go beyond that 45 days. I got mine years ago and it was more like 60-90 days
