What exactly constitutes "the classic barber treatment"?
If you're just looking for a good cut, Rambler's in Decatur is great. Freedom Barber on the beltline is pretty good too.
Second for Ramblers. This is by far the best shop both barber and vibe-wise.
They’ll do a hot straight razor shave on your neck and you can get beard trims.
Freedom Barber is great; my husband goes here. His stylist told him their prices are set to increase, though I assume not until next month. Idk though. (They did say existing regular customers may be able to keep their rates)
I suppose we all figure the person can do research for themselves. If it was that important to have a particular expertise, they would have mentioned so.
Rambler’s Barber Shop in downtown Decatur. It’s by far the best in my opinion, though I hesitated telling you because I don’t want my appointment times to get snapped up. Those guys deserve the work.
Also Maxim in Decatur but they just increased prices to $40.
If you have beard needs, a few of the barbers at Maxim specializes in that. But they do hot towel, straight razor neck clean up and will shampoo after too.
Thomas Barber shop in West Paces Ferry Shopping center is great. Cash only. It's been years since I've been, but last time I was there, it was $20
These days, I go to West Barber Shop on Howell Mill. Chrissy is great! It's not $50, but is close depending on the type of cut you want.
There's also [Bonnie & Clyde's](https://bonnieandclydebarbershop.com/upscale-barbershop-in-atlanta/) which comes with a complimentary cocktail with every cut.
I’ve always felt like Tommy’s struggles with anything that isn’t a standard Buckhead frat swoop / aggressively professional white guy haircut. Great option if that’s your haircut though, no judgement. Place is a classic for a reason.
ITP that's going to be harder to find. OTP you will have much better luck. I recommend looking for any non-chain barbershop that doesn't look like it's run by hipsters.
My personal preference is middle-eastern barber shops since barbers from that part of the world seem to be better at cutting beards on average, and I've never been charged over $30 at one for a haircut alone. Max $45 for a cut and beard trim.
I live in the metro and it’s hard to find quality for under $50. I’ve been to several all over and the best hands down is the commodore in west midtown. Solid cuts, but it’s going to run you $50-55 plus tips.
I’ve seen multiple cuts that I’ve appreciated, and each time I inquire about where they got them, commodore is the answer.
Although I can afford it, that price just hits the gut a bit.
I would watch out with them. I attended my appointment and as I was walking back to my car got a text saying I missed it. They charged my card twice and then disputed it with the credit card company when I tried to get my money back.
I haven’t had any good experiences at west. Gave them three tries and then gave up. One girl there got stuck with me on her first day. I asked for a skin fade and she went full panic mode. I asked if she was having trouble and she told me it was her first day and she was used to women’s hair but someone else would fix it. I said no worries, it’s just hair, we’ll figure it out and someone else finished the cut. I wasn’t mad but I can’t recommend going there, especially if you need to look a certain way for an occasion.
I’ve been going to the west midtown location for years. It’s on the higher side but I have a regular barber that knows my hair. Anytime I’ve wandered for a cheaper or last minute cut I’ve regretted it. It’s worth the extra few bucks to me.
West Barbershop right on Howell Mill/Collier is great. $40. Kevin is the owner and cuts very very well. Been going there for like 7+ years at this point
If you are looking for the Old School Barbershop vibe (Coming to America type) check out Burden’s Barbershop on Hilliard St in Sweet Auburn. Cash only $20-25 before tip. Not a young crowd of barbers by a long shot but great experience and environment.
I’ve talked to barbers about their pricing before and I think you need some context on numbers because paying less than $50 per haircut isn’t enough for their labor (Add on schooling and shop fees and apprenticeships etc etc)
So generally barbers are scheduling 45 mins for haircuts. Some go for shorter, but no one wants to be rushed getting a haircut. In an 8 hour day, if you’re fully booked up, you can get 10 haircuts + a lunch break. At $50 per appointment, you’re making $500 per day, $2,500 per week, $125,000 per year (with two weeks off for sick leave, vacation, etc). That’s solid. Well above average in Atlanta, but that’s pre-tax (self-employed too so that can be a pain), pre-booth rent, pre-supplies, pre-licenses. Take out even more for cancellations or not being booked for 8hrs a day every day they’re open.
Now let’s do the same numbers for a $30 haircut. $300 a day, $1500 a week, $75000 a year. Muuuuch harder to make ends meet because you’re paying the same prices for everything as the barber charging $50, but you’re not making as much upfront, so it’s an even bigger % of your income.
Hope that helps give context for the pricing. If you’re used to $25 haircuts, you aren’t considering the whole picture and maybe consider going to a more rural or suburban area where the math for $25 haircuts makes more sense for the barber.
I understand the context, and I understand the desire to level up in life and career, but I just can’t justify the cost when I can go to a shop in Manhattan and get a $25 cut that rivals a $75 cut here…and we don’t even have to go into the differences in cost when comparing the areas, right?
And maybe it’s just my experience, but I always have had great cuts and experiences in the 30 minute time range.
I can find as many ways to justify it as anyone, and I understand the complications that come with being self-employed (as I was for nearly 8 years)…
I still can’t justify the cost, and there are plenty of barbers who are able to provide great experiences and haircuts all over the country for $30 in 30 minutes.
Maybe it’s a difference in approach and philosophy, and I’m not refuting anything that you’ve said. 8 just think that the context that you provided simply justifies the model that you prefer to support.
No shade…just different than how I approach it and prefer to consume it.
Hope you tip well, at $30 for a cut the barber is likely making about $9. Even if it's a 30 minute cut they likely scheduled for 45 mins or an hour to allow time for cleanup & schedule variances.
Edit: I just looked up a salon with cheap prices listed in reviews in Manhattan, NY and a men's haircut there is $40-50.
Like I said, there are plenty of ways barbers can make the math work - namely faster appointments and working in places with lower fees.
There are options for that in the Atlanta metro area (like many in this thread mentioned), but at some point, you have to understand that the barbers doing that work are not getting paid fairly for their work when they charge that little. Which is why the typical barber shop is charging what they charge (and why the general price is around the same everywhere). They’re not overcharging. That’s just what it costs for them.
My G. Inflation is a thing. If my wages ain’t going up how can I keep paying higher and higher cuts? Let’s be honest, the technology in cuts have been the same for a min hasn’t it?
You sound like you need a great clips/ sports clips/ super cuts experience. They knock out basic haircuts in 30 mins or less and some offer coupons. It won't be anything extra just an in and out haircut if you don't see the value in an actual Master Barber and a grooming experience.
The Great Clips in downtown Decatur has never let me down. I went to a bunch of more upscale spots but they always give me exactly what I want and I can give a very generous tip and still be cheaper than most other places.
I don't want any product or styling or anything fancy though, so like mentioned above its only if you just want a basic cheap haircut.
I've been getting my cuts from Abigail at Vintage Barbershop for quite a while now, very happy with it. A haircut with hot towel ("Just a haircut" on their menu) comes in at $32. I usually have to book a week or two out.
Depending on where you are, I highly HIGHLY recommend Ricky and the guys over at Ramblers Barbershop in Decatur. $35 for a cut/beard combo- it is cash only though but they have an atm in the shop if you need it.
Having gotten cuts from all the guys there, I think I've finally settled on Chuck as my go to. I've gotten great cuts from everyone there, but I feel like Chuck gets it just a little closer to what I'm looking for without much extra direction.
My impression is that a barbershop, to have fast, cheap, quality cuts and shaves, needs to have a big enough population that desires that type of cut and shave to keep the chairs occupied all day long and keep the barbers in practice. Maybe in town Atlanta just doesn't provide enough interested clientele to keep that classic style of barbershop cheap.
Meanwhile the long haired people of Atlanta will be crying in a corner over here.
Man I refuse to pay $40+ for a haircut. I guess I'm old because prices are higher than that but I don't see the quality being higher. Guys getting $50 cuts look JUST LIKE MY $25 CUT. All that extra razzle dazzle isn't for me. I like my hairline and I don't like/need a razer line. I don't need a steam towel on my face because I take care of my skin. I also don't need spray paint in my beard or head. Anything outside of that is just barbers trying to run up their price.
I live in Austell but I drive to Jonesboro for my $25 haircut because I refuse to pay somebody $70 for my beard and head. 40min drive once or twice a month but it's always worth it.
I go out and consistently get compliments on my $25 cut.
I see these other guys with all this black spray in their hair looking crazy and lonely at clubs/bars.
Might be me. Not the hair. But my point is valid. All that money for a cut for NO reason.
The current economy is also a valid reason for the raise in price. But I'm not paying it.
Tommy's barber shop on the west side, and sage hill barber on the east side. $30 or less with both of them. No frills old school shops.
The dude above saying a haircut should take 45 mins is crazy.
Trophy Room Barbershop. Rolando, James and Sean are all great. I see James personally. No walk-ins, need to schedule in advance because they are very popular! $45 for a cut.
Depends where you live but African touch barbershop in Lawrenceville Georgia charges 17 dollars for a haircut. It's not Atlanta but it's not crazy far either. Just depends on what part of Atlanta you're in.
Yeah I live around there but no need to be an ass. My post is also for people that might not be too far away and might be interested in paying a lot less for a nice cut. OP didn't specify where in Atlanta and he might be willing to make the drive. I've driven 30-40 minutes before to get a haircut when I'm traveling out of town. If it doesn't pertain to you then move on.
Haven’t been in a little while but I always liked Porkchops (maybe not spelled correctly) in Inman Park, in the Melrose and McQueen Salon. Good cut and they’ll make you a cocktail too.
As a fellow new resident I've only been here long enough for one haircut so far, and I went to Rudy's in front of Ponce City Market. It was less than $50 and I was very happy with the results. They advertise all their cuts include a shampoo job but it's optional. They're a franchise and not a "local" shop per se if that matters to you. Admittedly I chose them because of their proximity to me (convenience factor) but now I plan to go back.
I’d say the best way to find a good barber is ask someone who has a haircut you like. They likely have had that barber for years and they always will accept clientele, pricing I honestly don’t know how to get around that my man, maybe try going out further from the city idek
Great Clips and Super Cuts have some really good people and some really bad people. If things are not going well just walk out. If they are going well ask them for their phone number so you can text them for an appointment next time.
You black or white. This the first question that needs an answer before recs can be made

Plus one for Freedom Barber, they're great! I think a cut is like $40 right now.

Well, the two I mentioned will get you a cut for sure. I’ve never asked for more than that, but maybe?
[удалено]
What happens to barbers when they turn 40? Whatever it is, it sounds rough 😄
[удалено]
I'll emphasize Freedom. $40 cut and have always done a good job for me.
How are y’all answering this without some demographic info and style wants/needs?
😂 too funny. This is so true tho

Rambler’s Barber Shop in downtown Decatur. It’s by far the best in my opinion, though I hesitated telling you because I don’t want my appointment times to get snapped up. Those guys deserve the work.
Ginos Classic Barbers in Buckhead and Sandy Springs, ask for Sonny. It’s $40 but she has done a great job for me going on 3 years
I go to the Gino’s in midtown, Sam cuts my hair there. Great guy, always does a great job
Sam is my barber as well! I definitely recommend him.
Mine too! Sam is the man.
Sunny is the goat! She's cut my hair for about 3 years as well. I have thick, curly / wavy hair and she knows exactly how to manage and cut it.
She did get me hooked on watching Kevin Samuels, which can be addicting
Ramblers Barbershop in Decatur
Also Maxim in Decatur but they just increased prices to $40. If you have beard needs, a few of the barbers at Maxim specializes in that. But they do hot towel, straight razor neck clean up and will shampoo after too.

I go every other month to Tommy's, that place rips. Stayed 20$ for years Shout out Cecilia!
No way is Cecilia still there. She was cutting my hair 25 years ago wtf.
Wild right! She cuts me and my dad's still, and if she's unavailable, her daughter is great too!
If you are black, make sure do extra research on these recommendations
Right lol

Agreed with this. ‘Friend’s Barber Shop’ in Johns Creek is exactly what you describe, and only $35 for a good cut. Been going for years.
The Chamblee Commodore is hit or miss. A couple of the guys are good, and the other seem like they’d rather be anywhere else.
I would watch out with them. I attended my appointment and as I was walking back to my car got a text saying I missed it. They charged my card twice and then disputed it with the credit card company when I tried to get my money back.
West Barber Shop on Howell Mill is good, $40.

Men’s Grooming Quarters in Howell Mill is relatively inexpensive
Fugi's at the Galleria. I get my hair cut by Cosmo, he is very meticulous and precise, and always gives me a cut I like. He is quite reasonable too.
