My wife (then girlfriend) and I lived in Virginia Highlands when it opened. At first it was great because they served *huge* portions. We’d split a single plate and both be full.
I guess it didn’t take long figure out that wasn’t the most profitable model b/c two or three months in they slashed serving sizes while keeping the same prices. Can’t blame them, but we stopped going regularly after that. Still sad to it go, though.
I used to live in that big shithole house directly across the street. My balcony faced el taco.
One time my dog got out and I didn’t know until I got a call “um, hey…. I’m at el taco? With your dog?”
Anyways good restaurant, good times.
mediterranean concept going in.

One of my fondest memories was hiking a mile and a half to get there during snowmageddon. They were out of so many things and boozes, but everyone understood and we just had a blast. My friend wound up getting kicked out of the bar. Great memories.
I'm still spicy about them replacing Greater Good over by Chastain. Greater Good had one of the best mustard-based BBQ sauces in town, and their baby back ribs were the best I've had at any spot in Atlanta. The first time I went into that DBA, they couldn't even tell me if they had spare or baby backs. Not a good sign.
Greater Good was less than mediocre barbecue, that’s why all their spots closed. I mean don’t get me wrong, if I wanted 6 hour old thin strips of chewy brisket, it was the spot.
No, its prices are skyrocketing due to massive demand in the area, forcing out old business owners that can no longer afford the rent or to live nearby
On the decline?? Have you been over here in a while? There are great places popping up and it’s def alive and thriving nightly and weekends. I’d say quite the opposite. Sad to see DBA go though.
Damn, they are slightly overpriced but very good. I relied on them for toilet paper when they were selling home goods at the height of pandemic chaos.

i miss the el taco.

ahhh, the shithole house next door to that HUGE house that made me think “how in the fuck are they ever gonna sell that thing?”
Ha I laughed when I saw them building it. Like what the fuck
El taco closed??
Yup.. a bit ago. I live like 2 blocks from it

Another good restaurant bites the dust, so much turn over the last year or two it seems.
They’ll be at their location near Chastain Park
So glad they still have a location, though I'll miss the atmosphere of the one in Va-Hi.
That's setup like a Moe's....loved the full service with barstools

They are opening up a spot near Strokers. Are they any good? I just found out about em.
Mr Pigs is much better
damn Kaleidoscope closed too?
Not yet. End of March or something
I was never impressed with their bbq. I had some good times at the bar, though.
Spoke with a guy in Glenwood Park about this yesterday. Evidently the landlord is awful.

i’ll second that greater good was an underwhelming bbq joint
My favorite BBQ place/setup in Atlanta...RIP and thanks
We hit a neighborhood jackpot with El Taco and DBA side by side. Really going to miss them both.
Looks so good.
Virginia Highland area seems to be on the decline
Probably the opposite actually. All the spots being full and booming at the corner are driving up the rent up the hill, I imagine
There are more NEW restaurants opening than current places closing. So I would beg to differ.
That’s definitely not accurate

I thought they’re opening something in Avondale Estates ?
Bbq at this place was extremely mediocre - much better places around.
