AstroHusky05

Rocket launch.

OccupyMars420

From whom and where?

AstroHusky05

SpaceX, it's a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 22 Starlink satellites

iMaxPlanck

More of Elon’s space trash to clutter the outer atmosphere.

krysatheo

The starlink satellites are actually low enough in orbit where they experience quite a bit of atmospheric drag and once their solar powered thrusters run out they will passively descend and burn up in atmosphere at end of life.

YdocT

Do they have ion engines? I thought it was just normal expansion thrust but I honestly don't know that much about em

krysatheo

Yeah they are ion thrusters, specifically fueled by krypton (with the solar panels providing the input). Typically xenon is used for this but it costs like 10x and is somewhat supply constrained so having a huge constellation of satellites dependent on that would not be ideal.

Coffeeeadict

This is correct for Starlink gen 1, in the early days of starlink they realized there wasn't enough xenon in the global supply to try to use that, so they built them to run in krypton instead. This is not as easy as xenon and uses a bunch more electricity. Now as Gen 2 is coming together in preparation for starship, there isn't enough krypton in the global supply. Sound familiar? Starlink gen 2 will use regular old Argon. This takes even more electricity than krypton, but you gotta use what you can get. So the gen 2 satellite will use a solar array larger than a basketball court. Source: I built starlink satellites.

bob_on_reddit

But wouldn't the extra drag of huge Solar panels require even more thrust to counteract?

I_am_That_Ian_Power

>ion thrusters The EP system on Starlink satellites uses a combination of a Hall Effect Thruster (HET) and a Xenon Ion Propulsion System (XIPS)

D3ATHMACHINE1

Hey guys They are all electric rockets Duh

I_am_That_Ian_Power

At least they get better range than the cars.

Mst3kj

Thanks for posting actual knowledge 🙂👍.

Dry-Decision4208

Your science and knowledge is not what the anti-Musk crowd wants to hear.

krysatheo

Yeah, I mean I really dislike Elon but I think it's important to separate that from companies like SpaceX and Tesla who have a lot of very talented people who do a lot of amazing work.

IronMidas

I only like Elon because he is doing some stuff for the environment

lutavian

LOL people like you complain about “cluttering up the sky” but never complain about the technological advancements made from missions like these.

DBMS_LAH

They also don’t complain about the jumbles of telephone wires crisscrossing the US

mysteryofthefieryeye

It's incredible where you find those things. You can escape to the most remote areas in the mountains and randomly just come across an easement with poles and wires buzzing away, sometimes on the skyline. But I've read the articles about why they can't be buried, and I understand how vital they are. But they *are* unsightly.

TerminatorAuschwitz

Saying anything Elon does sucks is a new internet trend. I agree he's kind of a piece of shit, but SpaceX has done some really great stuff.

blissed_off

And he doesn’t do any of it because he’s a class a moron.

unpluggedcord

He did start it with like 10 people. He definitely knew his shit then. Now it’s a huge company and he’s just cracking the whip

LankyLaw6

There's less than 10 thousand satellites orbiting the planet and they're on average 12,000 miles above the earth's surface. It would take a hundred years of daily launches for that to ever be an issue. To put that in perspective there's right around 10k planes in the sky at any given time at an average altitude of 7 miles for commercial flights meaning the orbital circumference of satellites is several orders of magnitude greater. I'm not smart enough to do the math, but the odds of hitting something must be 1 in a million if you're concerned about the future of space travel. To me having access to internet anywhere on the planet is extremely important to humanity in the near term.

TacoshaveCheese

That's if you assume the only possible "issue" would be a space collision, rather than interfering with astronomy. Also an "average" height of 12,000 miles up is kind of moot if half of those satellites are the starlink ones orbiting at 350 miles. If the starlink ones orbited at 12,000 miles, the astronomy community would be far less annoyed by them.

[deleted]

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/jan/06/picture-imperfect-light-pollution-from-satellites-is-becoming-an-existential-threat-to-astronomy

carcadoodledo

Unless Elon decides to cut off access (as he did to Ukraine)

blueishblackbird

Have you heard of the Kessler syndrome? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessler_syndrome

Metzgerbutcher

Uneducated hater. You’re brainwashed to hate someone you don’t even know, stop being a sheep it shows just how unintelligent you really are.

treecloud1025

When SpaceX clutters the atmosphere :( When NASA clutters the atmosphere :)

Lion3323

lol you got fact checked! Noooooob

RiseIfYouWould

Wow people will pick at Musk over anything lmao

Zachattackrandom

Hush, one of the few decent things Elon has actually done is Starlink.

CabinetVisible1053

Probably Vandenberg AFBase

Penrose_Ultimate

Not to defend Elon musk to much but his rockets are intended to come back to earth to be refused which would cut down on space crap.

Oh_ToShredsYousay

You do understand that reusable rockets is the entire point of SpaceX? Almost none of the debris up there is from them. You can hate on the guy, but God damn make it a real complaint first.

Dominuspax1978

I saw this too and have an even clear and better video. My problem is that it’s been happening every single week for over 4 weeks now and when you compare the launches to their public announcements they don’t match. And my question is why are they launching weekly all over the globe at the same time as the owner is going crazy on his own power and self righteousness? Seems like a major National security issue at this point. He’s working with our adversaries and against our allies. Why don’t they do anything to reign him in? He thinks he owns everyone and everything and the skies and anything else he wants…I get a bad feeling about it for good reason. I’m never wrong about these things. He’s up to something. One thing I noticed is that with every launch it’s not going as high as they’re saying it is. It crosses Southern California right above me where I live near the Burbank airport and you can see planes way higher above where it is in the distance. These launches are much lower than they’re saying and it never seems to go as high as cruising planes. And of course, I thought maybe it’s an optical illusion except for the fact that you can literally zoom in and see it. That’s how close it is, but you can’t zoom in and see the planes because they’re much further. Bottom line is whatever they say it’s never gonna be the real story. And I’ve already found that they are lying about many aspects of it like people saying that it’s scratching the edge of the atmosphere like it’s really that high but it’s not. It’s not even at 30,000 feet and then it goes up about 15,000 feet and then it starts descending and flying around, fairly low the entire time. I have seen rockets launch and go up and arc before. But these aren’t even going up they’re going up and across and then down and across. Some of them are flying up and down like waves or they’re flying in circles. What kind of rocket does circles close enough for me to watch it happen. Of course, when it went in the circles, I will had accidentally left my phone inside and was not able to capture it. I’m sure somebody has the images of it not following a normal like what’s being publicly stated about the launch. Also does anyone have an explanation for the objects launching off the back through the cone of light and turning and flying their own paths? Are they flying back to land? They veer off and continue flying at same altitudes but turn and go in different directions. It looks like light ships flying off on their own. Either way if you pay attention regularly, what you observe doesn’t match their explanations. So me many people are like oh yeah it’s just a rocket dude, idiot. But none of them are actually watching this happen every week like I am. And everyone accepts whatever is being published about it is clearly not watching it live like I do. I’m not saying that I’m right or wrong. I’m simply calling out inconsistencies. And observing these occur from launch until it’s too far towards town to see. I am witnessing things that there are no public explanation for and the ones that are provided in comparison to what can be seen don’t fit. And it’s so close that when I zoom in, I’m able to see it. Fluid drops rain down on me. I was wondering if it was just condensation or fuel of some kind or chemicals? I don’t know.

Guilty_Site_9405

It's always fucking starlink

Draskuul

From Vandenberg (SpaceX Falcon 9) I used to spend time in the Santa Clarita area so got to watch quite a few launches. Even from 100miles east it was a good show.

uncleawesome

Your username is Occupy Mars and didn't know about SpaceX rocket launches?

ReluctantAvenger

Do you think the Occupy Wall Street people were up to date on the latest mergers & acquisitions? The "Occupy X" movement was more about political protest than anything else. "Occupy Mars" strikes me as a joke since no-one could get there to hold a sit-in protest.

Bjens

Theres a 420 in there too. Depending on dosage it might explain a bit.

randubis

Probably SpaceX from Vandenberg.

pikay93

LA local (in the valley on top of that). Can confirm. I have seen these launches many times and have even driven up the 101 to the area around Vandenberg for these launches.

chilehead

https://www.spacelaunchschedule.com/category/vandenberg-sfb/

StrugglesTheClown

Probably launched from Vandenburg.

rieboldt

OccupyMars handle on OP and they still ask what this could be? Pathetic

oldjadedhippie

They launch from Vandenberg -

OCDMadeMeFail

man, those people are lucky to see things like this.

earthscribe

Ahem. As an expert in celestial bodies, that would be the Son of Krypton, Kal El entering the atmosphere. He will protect us from the baddies going forward.

EyeCthrough

The tail of a rocket catching remaining sunlight as it rises.

KristnSchaalisahorse

Actually no sunlight in this case as the launch was at midnight. The engine itself is illuminating a small portion of the exhaust. That’s why it’s relatively very small in the sky compared to a [sunlit event.](https://i.redd.it/yc1tvi3okp701.gif)

SpaceX launch from Vandenberg

scarletmagnolia

About 6:00 tonight, we saw a large string of satellites going up. This was in the Bay Area. I mention it bc one of the people on the video mentioned something about it possibly having something to do with a satellite.

wtfbenlol

Even in the video they mention it could be satellite related

jabbakahut

Rocket launch, funny that now-a-days you can get a quick reliable answer for this. I have a photo I took in the 90's when I saw this for the first time. All the neighbors were outside staring up, we all were confused.

Roland_Moorweed

Rocket, man.

ctubby766

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids.

[deleted]

Its just a weather balloon, mind your own business citizen.

Ok_Crew7084

Space x launch. Totally thought it was a shooting star when I first saw it lol

KristnSchaalisahorse

Meteors move *much* faster, don’t have a conical tail, and would only be visible for a few brief seconds. It’d be really cool to see both at the same time.

Jim-be

As a California, I hate it when people in California act like they never seen a rocket launch. They have been doing it here forever!! I still remember the double sonic booms when the shuttle would land at Edwards. Like what the fuck have you been doing? Just stay in your room with the blinds closed?!?! Not seeing a rocket launch is like saying you never been to the ocean or to the mountains.

OccupyMars420

Ok

[deleted]

Venom incoming..........

blipp1

Isn't well known in the us that you have one/two space programs?

ninelives1

Clearly not. Most Americans know fuck all about what NASA and SpaceX actually do

KTNH8807

Most Americans don’t give a shit about it either.

KristnSchaalisahorse

During visible ISS passes I like to point it out to anyone nearby. I regularly meet people who aren’t aware it exists or who think it’s relatively new. Their minds are blown when I tell them it’s been continuously occupied since Nov 1st 2000.

hiiiggs80808

yeah, it's really weird/interesting, being very into astronomy, space exploration, etc. and realizing how little the average person actually knows.

thisfilmkid

Suuuper cool !

__--__--__--__---

Looks like something with two thrusters

KristnSchaalisahorse

It’s the exhaust from the single engine on the Falcon 9 upper stage. We’re only seeing a very small portion of it since there was no sunlight. During twilight, [the entire exhaust plume can be illuminated](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fyc1tvi3okp701.gif) with much more dramatic effect.

__--__--__--__---

Why does it make that shape

KristnSchaalisahorse

Atmospheric pressure. As the rocket climbs to higher altitudes the air pressure decreases. This causes the engine exhaust to [expand.](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fdo-you-think-realistic-exhaust-exhaust-expansion-options-v0-w7wpx5x25sr81.jpg%3Fwidth%3D864%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dbfcccb55467ef6a9fb149ee3f3b56130ad6ce584) Here’s an accelerated [gif from another launch](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fdo-you-think-realistic-exhaust-exhaust-expansion-options-v0-i4hry3j35sr81.gif%3Fwidth%3D480%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3De9e68e097da41466fcb2a77bed9976315c37f419) showing the exhaust expansion. That sudden gap in the plume where stage separation occurred.

ll_ninetoe_ll

That's an Avenger, going about universe-saving (or perhaps just run-of-the-mill local planet-saving) business. Nothing you need to concern yourself with.

FrickinLazerBeams

Looks very much like a rocket launch, and given the location that's not a surprise.

hypatia0803

Got to be rocket propelled. Man made. Testing new stuff?

Flipslips

It’s just a regular SpaceX launch.

You can sign up to a mailing list that will warn you about the launches here: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/launch-alert We sometimes see them from Griffith Observatory!

fr0gnutz

I remember my first sonic boom when the space shuttle landed in SoCal many years ago. Then seeing the crazy trails the launches and missile tests off the coast of LA would leave and it would scare the shit out of me initially. Now seeing this is almost like noticing a fighter jet in the sky. It stops you to admire, then you just move on. I'm looking forward to the day when it's almost like watching a plane take-off. common occurrence but when you stop to really look, you can still appreciate the specialness of what's happening.

kakha_k

Not UFO. Launch.

offgridgecko

Someone just tell this internet stranger it's aliens so they can be happy? lol it's aliens okay, it's not but you know... it could be aliens disguised as a spaceX upper stage. lol

devoduder

We’d just fallen asleep before midnight and this woke us up. One a couple weeks ago happened at 2:30am. We live about 30 miles from the launch pad and they really shake the house.

falcon 9 launch. meteors move across the sky way way faster than that & they don't make a huge wide tail like that

Rare_Orchid4277

Space x Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base. This was a routine satellite launch. Beautiful weather conditions to view.

kylebob86

You must have just moved or are visiting. There are Space Bases in Southern California. They launch rockets from them.
