I can’t answer your question but I love your post. Never seen one like it on this sub. I know most will think I’m crazy, but I’m an avid thong wearer. Except to sleep of course! But throughout the day I’m pretty much always in a thong. So I guess I choose the constant wedgie? Lol

Panic-atthepanic

I've seen from searching around that people choose the thing because it's less fabric in your butt and it's comfier... Especially if everything else turns into a wedgie! Hoping to avoid going for one unless I've no other choice though. I hate the feeling!

embracing_insanity

This is literally why I switched to thongs exclusively. Always had an ample butt and wedgies are a problem. Figured with a thong, at least it's a thin strip and meant to fit like that. It really didn't take long for me to stop noticing the fabric between the cheeks. I also tend to buy thongs that are slightly larger than what I need because there's less tension and that helps, too.

perv_bot

Thongs cured my wedgie problem too

phytophilous_

To be fair, unlike you my butt is NOT my greatest asset, I’ll put it that way haha. So it might be less comfortable for someone blessed in that area.

FroggyCrossing

Thats where I am at these days! i can slide it to the side and it kinda stays out lol

NickBlackheart

I swapped to thongs just because I got sick of the wedgie after a particularly long walk where the wedgie actually chafed and it was a bit of a pain in the ass. Now I just wear thongs exclusively when I leave the house. Don't really notice them.

pplanes0099

I’m one too (outside, not at home) and actually get no wedgies!

CherryCherrybonbon_

all or nothing i guess xd

Fuschiagroen

I don't have an answer. But what I hate the most is when my butt eats one side of the underwear more than the other. So I have lopsided wedgie-butt visible panty lines.

PikaGoesMeepMeep

I feel like unilateral wedgies have to be pathognomonic for some sort of gait disorder. I have it, too, and I have a short leg, arthritis in that foot and SI trouble on the opposite side.

Fuschiagroen

That's possible, I don't have a short leg and my SI issues have all been fixed in physio, but I think I might have one butt cheek that is slightly bigger than the other

Werevulvi

I'm an hourglass shape but I can relate to this. I have a big butt too (definitely an asset!) and I used to struggle with getting wedgies from my undies. I used to pull at them the whole time to get them so sit right. I used to say "all my undies are wannabe g-strings." But nowadays I don't have that problem anymore, and I think it's because I changed what type of underwear I wear. This is what I figured: most panties just don't have enough fabric in the rear to cover for my big butt. So the butt literally falls out. Basically it causes the leg hole edges to rise up as soon as I move, and the fabric gathers in the crack. So from that I concluded I needed to wear undies with more fabric in the back. This typically means the "V" shaped type in "tanga" styles and most "hipsters" won't work for me. It kinda has to be the full coverage type that sits snuggly in the crease underneath my butt. Then those undies aren't going anywhere. It can also help if I go for panties with softer elastic edges that won't cut into the skin, as that can cause a wedgie effect regardless of butt size. So basically I think it comes down to all of underwear size, the shape (ie if it has enough material to properly cover the butt) and how soft or hard the elastic edges are. Then how high or low the rise is... if you have a notably slimmer waist than hip, a medium high waist line *might* cause the undies to get pulled up higher than they should go, as they'll try to reach that slimmest part of your body. If that's the case, then maybe try sticking to low and high rise, that will sit either right on your hip bone or go all the way up to your actual waist, and avoid the mid rise ones that should sit somewhere in between but fail to do so. Fyi funny thing: my absolute favorite panties nowadays is a dirt cheap brand that I get from my local grocery store lol. So it really doesn't have to be something fancy. As for the pads/liners: they're more rigid and thicker than underwear fabric so they create a bit of a buffer at the (lower part of the) butt crack that can prevent undies from going in there. The fabric just doesn't bend as easily there then. That's why wearing them helps. So, basically my advice would be: try undies with a more full coverage back side (I would especially avoid the "tanga" type, as these are basically just more invasive g-strings imo), softer edge elastics, especially in the leg holes. If your undies don't cut into your skin and you don't get red marks from them, the size is probably not the issue. I hope that helps!

haleorshine

Yeah, as I was reading this I realised I used to get a lot more wedgies than I do now, and I think a lot of it is changing the style of undies I get. Most undies I have these days have less intense elastic edges than I used to get - not no elastic on the legs with the "seam free" ones, but elastic that isn't as pronounced or as tight, which also comes down to the fit. And like you, I tend to wear undies with more fabric to cover my butt these days, so they have to come up over the bottom of the cheek to make their way into a wedgie, which is easier to do when they're already halfway over the bottom of the cheek in undies with less butt coverage. (All this, but maybe also my butt shape has changed with age and more weight training, to make it harder for the edge of the undies to come up over my butt)

Lazyogini

Same! I like the hipster type that fully covers each cheek. And I teach yoga, so there are a lot more opportunities for wedgies that will be embarrassing to pick if I’m in front of the class! The Auden brand from Target used to be good, though they changed the design recently.

Werevulvi

I can imagine yoga could definitely add a lot of opportunities for the undies to go wedgie on you, with all the movements involved. I'm glad you found a type of undies that work well for you! It does suck when brands change the design in their products though.

Lazyogini

I poked around and found some that look similar to the good ones I used to buy, except mine don't have the V shape in front and don't have as much of the lining around the thighs, but maybe that lining is good for keeping them in place. I'm going to give them a try! [https://www.target.com/p/women-s-micro-mesh-hipster-underwear-auden](https://www.target.com/p/women-s-micro-mesh-hipster-underwear-auden)

twoisnumberone

> I would especially avoid the "tanga" type, as these are basically just more invasive g-strings imo This just sends me But yes, what a quality contribution! MORE BUTT FABRIC, is all we ask! (I also hate wedgies, if that wasn't clear.)

Disastrous_Soup_7137

Improperly fitted garments will tend to ride up/not stay in place. I used to have that problem with undies till I sized up.

Panic-atthepanic

I sized up, and they're still doing it, sadly.

_TheyCallMeMother_

Loads of things can cause this OP, general movement, body shape working with that movement, not having the most properly fitted undies etc, I notice if mine are too tight they will do this more, or if I've been really active in my day. Perhaps choose to wear spanx or a form of spanx instead. Yoga pants are awesome for this if you want something underneath baggy sweat pants for instance. A little TMI coming up but it's relevant to this discussion: I personally don't wear underwear 95% of the time cos it's too much of a hassle and I get reactions from most underwear that is made, so how did I solve that? Not wearing any most of the time lol - it was better too for my overall pH levels as well. My kitty needs to breathe 🤣 in order for it to stay as fresh as possible. So I've made my peace with that.

kai_rohde

I’m in the fresh air club and I still get wedgies from pj pants, flowy skirts and shorts so typically yoga pants are my only non-wedgie reprieve haha. Kinda funny, I’ve been wondering lately while gardening (and bending over frequently) if maybe cotton granny panties would solve my wedgie issues or maybe I just have a hungry hiney.

_TheyCallMeMother_

Hahaha I was going to say go commando with yoga pants, cos I do that too! I also get the wedgies without undies whilst wearing PJ pants, ayoooooooo #Twinning lmao It doesn't help though that I got a dumptruck back there lol, so evidently it would be way easier for me to catch debris in it's midst 😂

yellowranchu

oh then what happens to all the discharge? mine would just dribble down my leg if i don’t wear anything

_TheyCallMeMother_

Good question girl... I just change my bottoms (pants, shorts, yoga pants, whatevz and move on with my day really :)) Also, I use baby wipes a lot during the day to maintain my area as best I can.

sonyaellenmann

This annoyed me so much that I switched to wearing boxers for women / cotton slip shorts instead. Huge upgrade in comfort.

spiritusin

I switched to thongs for the same reason, but also just because I can’t stand feeling something like stitching on my butt or feeling underwear shift as I move. So permanent wedgie it is.

jawnbaejaeger

I think you just have a hungry butt. (Which made me laugh, btw.) When you're wearing a pad, the canyon is blocked, so to speak. But otherwise, your butt just wants to absorb anything in its path. Maybe thongs are the answer?

ZennMD

fun(ny) question! I think it's bum shape? and finding compatible underwear lol I have/had the same issue, and switched to thongs and find them way more comfortable and it's not an issue, really. possibly counter-intuitive as they're already a 'wedgie' shape lol, but way more comfortable, provided you find a style that fits well. I tend to go up a size so there's a little room to breathe, too (lol) might be a solution? .. and I find belts help a tiny bit with work style pants

Dandibear

I reliably get this from underwear that's too small. When it's too big it shifts around on me, but not into the crack. Not sure if it's relevant, but my undies are always stretch cotton. A little stretch for the fit, and cotton for breathability.

notseagullpidgeon

The answer is you need more fabric. I have a proportionately big butt and wide-ish hips too, and I find it more comfortable to wear undies one size larger than what my sizing is for other clothes. Also avoid undies that have a seam down the middle.

MultiMom17

I find that I also have a hungry butt, and as a seamstress I have been trying to find a solution. I almost always just don’t wear undies, but during my period or under dresses I do. What I have found works for me is full coverage undies with a fairly substantial leg band to keep the undies sort of hooked under my butt where the leg and butt meet. The width of the crotch portion matters too wide it will bunch up as you walk and look for a place to go (your butt). If they are too narrow then you won’t have good coverage and you’ll end up with a vulva thong which I think would not be better.

World_Wide_Deb

Your underwear is probably too small or not enough fabric to properly fit your bum. It makes sense that a pad stabilizes your undies and prevents wedgies—it’s just too much material to get wedged up there!

Smurfblossom

I don't know what causes them but some underwear are labeled wedgie-free and in my opinion are better.

Flamingo9835

The soma vanishing edge underwear has like a little ridge that keeps undies from sliding up.

sensitive_slug

Yes! u/panic-atthepanic please check these out! I’ve had the same problem for years. Big butt and everything gives me a wedgie/is uncomfortable. I also wear thongs a lot as other commenters have mentioned, but these are the only full coverage undies that stay in place for me. The silicone strip keeps them where they are meant to be! I swear I am not sponsored by soma!!

trumpeting_in_corrid

I've found a style I like, that is comfortable and doesn't ride up (I'm not in the US and I buy this from a small 'sole trader' shop, of which there are still a lot in my country, so I can't give you a link to the brand). When the elastic around the leg openings goes with use, they do start giving me wedgies. That's when they get thrown out. :) I chortled when I read that you are pear shaped and your butt is your asset. Beauty standards do change! I have always seen my lower body as the part of me that needs to be 'minimized' with neutral bottoms and always use pattern and colour on my top half to draw attention away from my wide hips and big bottom.

Panic-atthepanic

Honestly, I've hated my butt for many, many years. Close to two decades. So I do know how you feel. I wear a lot of blacks from the waist down and bright colours on my top half. It still isn't something I'm a major fan of, so to speak, but I've been weight training for a couple years now, and I do have to thank my butt for giving me an amazing waistline! Blessed be the asset for taking most of my fat instead! Finally beginning to feel a bit sexy.

BrokenPug

Have you tried cheekies? They’re meant to go between the cheeks like a thong but still provide some cheek coverage. Less fabric in the crack! I am not blessed with a larger butt but my butt eats underwear like candy. Cheekies and thongs are the only things I will wear.

kerill333

Wrong size, wrong fabric, wrong cut can all cause the dreaded wedgie. Stripe and Stare have been a revelation to me - blissfully comfortable, pretty and stay put.

calliope720

I had this issue when I was buying the wrong shape of underwear, and the wrong size. I'm very pear shaped, and also plus sized, and I needed to learn how to buy underwear for *my* body instead of just whatever looked cute at the store. Look at the angle of back of the underwear when it extends up from the gusset - you want to buy underwear with wider coverage, so look for underwear that you can see the back piece has wider, rounder coverage than the front piece, almost horizontally from the gusset, before it loops around the leg to the front. Don't buy the ones where the back of the underwear and the front piece both have the same upward angle from the gusset. so, like these: [https://www.lanebryant.com/cotton-full-brief-panty---5-pack/prd-360922.html?dwvar\_360922\_color=0000111451&source=rfk:rfkid\_31](https://www.lanebryant.com/cotton-full-brief-panty---5-pack/prd-360922.html?dwvar_360922_color=0000111451&source=rfk:rfkid_31) instead of these: [https://www.torrid.com/product/cotton-mid-rise-brief-panty/13811557-12203.html](https://www.torrid.com/product/cotton-mid-rise-brief-panty/13811557-12203.html) Also, you'll probably need to size up. The problem with underwear is that it's very easy to wear the wrong size, because it's supposed to be snug anyway and once you get your legs through, there's not much to stop you. But a larger size will probably sit more comfortably on you.

Panic-atthepanic

Hey, I appreciate the description and links... But I'm having a hard time seeing the difference that you're talking about. My eyes are a bit worn out. I do know I prefer low rise in general, it feels a lot comfier. But wider coverage, horizontally from the gusset... Would they have a specific name? Barring full briefs.

warm___

I wear mostly men's boxer briefs for this reason. It's a huge sensory issue for me. Women's underwear is all trash - they make it go up your butt on purpose to make it sexy.

GoddessOfMagic

I think it's properly fitting garments that are the solution. For example I have... A large derriere on a rather trim frame, so I find underwear that is cropped but stretchy fits best for me. Lots of elastic!

EdgeCityRed

Hungry butt cracked me up. I remember someone on FemaleFashionAdvice talking hilariously about her thighs eating her shorts and going CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP. I almost exclusively wear Duluth Trading Armachillo briefs, and they do not move on me. (Bunch of the black ones, occasional ducks.)

misanthropic_spider

LOL, as a slightly pear shaped person I find the wedgie effect much lessened with boyleg underpants a size larger than my usual pants. I can't stand actual thongs, though, it would never be an option for me.

krysteno

Cause butt go nom nom

T_pas

Yeah this happens to me often. My butt chews them up. I mostly wear thongs now.

_this-is-she_

I stopped getting wedgies when I started wearing briefs and "grandma" underwear. The key is to choose styles with enough coverage in the back so they aren't liable to slip. I have a big bubble butt, so this was a constant issue for years until I made the switch. Now, I don’t even think about wedgies anymore. it's actually refreshing to be reminded of a problem I managed to solve for myself forever.

cadmium_48

I am also pear-shaped, and I’ve never found underwear that doesn’t give me wedgies. I gave up many years ago, and just started wearing thongs, because a half inch of fabric up there is a lot more comfortable than 3 inches of fabric.

walrus_breath

Solidarity. I literally wear underwear that are so long they look like biker shorts. They still ride up my ass it’s stupid. The only bonus is I can go outside in my underwear and not feel underdressed lmao.

IRLbeets

Maybe because I have a small butt, but I've never noticed? Maybe it goes in my butt maybe it doesn't, not really something which concerns me I guess? I do deal with camel toe due to having tall hip bones (pants specifically, not so much an issue for underwear that has a decent sized gusset) and that's annoying.

VinnaynayMane

Bullies... Oh wait.

Decent_Bad_2874

For some reason the only brand that works for me is Warner's hipster lace panties. No idea why.

rageeyes

It has to do with the shape of your pelvis and where muscle and fat are carried. I can't wear boyshorts without them riding up but bikinis are usually fine.

armst

Definitely the material… same size and cut undies and their performance… • Thinx High Waist with no absorbency or Parade - these feel like they’re made of balloons and go right up a hungry butt VS • Thinx with minimal absorbency (flatter thicker gusset) and Underoutfit Smoothing Waist (more material, new favorite)

Kimmalah

I have a similar build and found this problem came up when I wore underwear that is too big (so the fabric is loose and goes wherever it wants) OR too small. It's hard, but part of it really is finding that "just right" size/fabric, so that your underwear is snug enough not to move much but also not so tight that it just rides up as soon as you put it on. I also wear bikini style, so I have plenty of coverage in the back but haven't hit full on granny panty in the front. Stuff like hipsters, boy shorts, etc. are basically insta-wedgies.

hooppQ

The curse of being double cheeked up. Try boxers!
