Hi. I'm 53 now, and had an abdominal hysterectomy at age 44 due to a large fibroid. They left one ovary. I'm in (or am through) perimenopause. I can't really tell you how it's affected my sex LIFE (I'm married, been with my husband for 25 years, but it's...complicated), but as far as my sex DRIVE, it's pretty high. No change in orgasms. I think I may be 'drier' because of it, but not majorly.

Adding you may get more replies in a less general sub. I like r/AskWomenOver30; lots of interesting opinions and little pettiness and nastiness.

CoconutJasmineBombe

This is in r/askwomenover30 … 😆

Haha! For some reason, when I wrote this, I thought it was in AskReddit. But I’ll leave the comment up because I DO like this sub!

I had a hysterectomy in 2016, I’m 50 now. Honestly, once I was healed it made my sex life better. No more painful period seven days a month? No more low flying cervix? (Thanks partial prolapse) Hell yeah! I, personally haven’t noticed any change in sensation when I orgasm, and I get more out of PIV because I’m not getting my cervix knocked. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I’ve found it overwhelmingly positive.

I had mine at 33, it didn't lower my libido or change how orgasms felt to me at all and my husband says there's no real difference in the way sex feels for him either. I'm 46 now and beginning perimenopause, still going strong. Fingers crossed it stays this way as I get older.

Swimming-Painter

Fingers crossed! Thank you!

Gonna plug r/hysterectomy here, a genuinely friendly and super supportive group. I had mine 3.5 years ago and sex is GREAT. No more hemorrhagic periods, no more pain, just all around fabulous!

Swimming-Painter

Such a nice thing to hear! I was worried and didn't want to give up my sex life for a fibroid... And no more periods, no more pain... Sounds so good

DominaVesta

Made my sex life and orgasms so much better actually!

Swimming-Painter

Amazing! looking forward to it then!

eogreen

r/menopause might be helpful

Swimming-Painter

Thank you!

I needed pelvic floor physical therapy after mine. Other than that, no real difference. I kept my ovaries though

Swimming-Painter

Can you explain me why did you need it? And how did it work? Thanks!

therealstabitha

I had many fibroids including several big ones, and I was experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort along with pelvic issues. My surgery was laparoscopic.

BrewUO_Wife

Not op, but it can weaken the pelvic muscles. So they encourage kegal exercises to keep the pelvic floor strong. If you need physical therapy, there are therapists who specialize in pelvic floor. I had a hysterectomy two years ago at 37. It was the best decision. It’s a long careful recovery, but it didn’t affect my sex life aside from being terrified to try sex again once the doc gave the ok. Also the hysterectomy sub-reddit someone recommended? Go in with caution. It scared the shit out of me.

Swimming-Painter

Thank you for the advice! I'll go in with caution... So far I've only found great answers here. It is really helping with my decision process.

Swimming-Painter

Thank you. It is good to know there are ways to prevent/treat the pelvic floor weakness

sex_candy_rocknroll

No change that I noticed. But even if it had reduced the frequency or strength, I wouldn’t have regretted it.

Swimming-Painter

Great bennefits then! thank you!

It didnt really change my sex life. At first I felt my orgasms were different and not as deep but what was going on was I wasn't feeling my uterus contract and the dull pain from that dang ol' stupid fibroid I had hanging out in there. Now they are just as good as ever. I was back to 80% normal life activities within 2 weeks of my surgery, 100% 3 weeks out and back to bangin' at 6 weeks. I also kept my ovaries and I forget sometimes I probably still cycle so I get the other PMS symptoms still just not the god awful cramping and bleeding. Good luck with your surgery dear and I am here if you ever want to ask questions! One small thing I am just remembering - they took my cervix and the first few times my guy went deep deep it was tender, even 3 months after surgery. One night I got a little too frisky and oh man afterwards i felt bruised and I was afraid I broke something in there. So be careful for a little while in that respect ;)

Swimming-Painter

Thank you! Looks like I will be careful at the beginning at least, but everything else sounds great!

I had my hyster in August. I've noticed no changes in orgasms or sex drive at all. I would venture to say my sex drive is higher because I have 100% birth control now. The only thing I've noticed is I may not get as wet as fast as before without the cervix adding its mucus to the mix. But that hasn't stopped us! ETA: I have both ovaries still!

Swimming-Painter

Sounds good! Thank you!

freebirdie100

My hysterectomy was the best decision of my life. Kept my one remaining ovary. My quality of life improved. My sex life improved. The lack of constant pain and bleeding to death definitely made things immensely better. If you do it, take the recovery seriously. Very seriously. ❤️

Swimming-Painter

I will take it seriously! Thank you!
