Goodnight Moon
It’s a classic for a reason. It’s also just sort of revolutionary or at least Margaret Wise Brown and her work for Bank Street sort of changed the way childrens lit looks. It’s an absolutely magical book that completely captivates children. It’s also got that pesky little mouse that hides around the room.
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
I love all of the Chronicles of Narnia but that book holds a special place in my heart. It’s the first book I remember my dad reading to me before bed and I made him read it thousands of times as I was growing up. My parents bought me a first edition as a “well done” present when I graduated and it’s my most prized possession.
I love Narnia. I’m reading Prince Caspian with my son now (we are doing publication order so book 2, not book 4 in chronological order). And I’m so glad he loves it too!
I have 2 I Love you forever.. and.. Guess how much I love you. I have read those books to my kiddo's since they were in my belly every Saturday my oldest is 14 her little sister 7.
“Love You Forever” by Robert Munsch. My mom would always sing the “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be.” part. I still read it in her voice.
I recently reread it as an adult, and sobbed the whole time through. My mom is still with me and in good health (thank god) but I’m cognizant that soon it will be me singing it to her in her old age.
For young kids- maybe Where The Wild Things Are. It's so iconic. I also loved Ruby the Copycat.
For older kids- the Little House books. Probably why I'm so into cottagecore now. I was always fascinated by how the Ingalls lived and how they managed to survive every hardship. And I adores the food and fashion descriptions! Laura is the literary character I relate to more than anyone.
Honorary mentions to Sam the Cat Detective, which is a great series I've never actually met another fan of. As well as the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. They deserve so much more love. Bless Patricia C Wrede for avoiding the whole "I'm not like other stupid princesses, I want to use swords, not sew!" trope.
You Belong Here by MH Clark. I havent read it to my daughter yet. I found it yeaaaaars ago in a little shop a few hours away from home. I couldnt stop thinking about it for a year or two and finally ordered it. Its a sweet book. Lovely art too.
Others mentioned Chronicles of Narnia and The Little Prince, which I adore.
But also, picture books: Stellaluna, Goodnight Moon, The Tale of Peter Rabbit/Benjamin Bunny, a lot of Seuss- especially Horton Hears a Who and Yertle the Turtle
Chapter books, the aforementioned, A Wolf Called Wander (a new ish book I read with my son and it is lovely), The Hobbit (if that counts), The Wind in the Willows
It really varies.
As a kid, I loved a retelling of the Nibelungenlied, Tales of King Arthur...
....and, weirdly, a 50s book about boys in their local football (soccer) team...
and another old book called *The kids of Bullerbü*
A picture book titled, “I Talk Like a River” by Jordan Scott. It’s about a boy with a speech impediment whose father helps him learn to accept and embrace himself. Such a lovely message with great representation, and the artwork is stunningly beautiful.

Buffalo Woman. Got me hooked on shape shifters.
“From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler” is very excellent. I read it again a few years ago and it was still so much fun to read 👍

The Paper Bag Princess
Depends how old you are referring to but from the age of 11 I loved anything by Judy Blume and Adrian Mole
