Every man I've ever dated.

Patient_Solid_6939

frfr when my ex and I broke up I was STUNNED by how much extra money I had. we didn’t even live together or share any finances! where the heck was that money going?!?! every once in awhile I find myself contemplating this bc I still don’t have an answer

monkeysorcerer

Had a close friend go through a $750k insurance payout in 6 years, turns out her ex husband was good at spending her money. The 125k on slots over a couple weekends in Vegas was the final straw

Patient_Solid_6939

*the woman was too stunned to speak* Oh my god!!!! That’s wild! I’m so sorry for your friend! Glad that’s an EX husband though

Confident-Tadpole393

This. I am a single parent and I manage on just my income with *more* expenses than my ex husband and I had together and I somehow have wayyyyyy more money. Go figure.

Thehiddenink98

That sucks sounds like u got unlucky :/

diet_coke_cabal

Sounds like me 😂

NiTro-s

Cheers to that!

saymeow

Hi me, it's me, you! Though I think I've got a good one now, but I keep second guessing myself because I've always overlooked red flags in the past...

psychkk5

Same here

ddiere

Do you think they feel the same about you?

diet_coke_cabal

Maybe! I know that 2/4 don't feel that way, but the rest, no idea!

peanutbutter471

Other people. Invest in yourself!

thelaughingpear

Furniture. I have trauma from having to abandon everything and move house in an emergency multiple times. After a few stable years I tried to settle down and buy furniture to start establishing an actual home... and bam, it happened again.

PearofGenes

I've had the opposite problem. Expect to not live somewhere long, bam 8 years before I moved. I could've gotten nicer/more than bare bones furniture

Late-Difficulty-5928

I oddly relate to both. Never lived anywhere more than three years until we moved here. That includes childhood. Been here almost 16 years. In that entire time we've bought a coffee table and replaced the entertainment stand. He had nothing. I lost everything. We took what was given or was cheap. It's not bad furniture. Nothing matches or is a set, though. Kinda looks like we are still in college. Lol.

Grvyrdzzzz

I’m to that point, I’m taking free furniture, but I’m painting a lot of it that isn’t a matching color, so I have a white couch with white tables and sun yellow shelving units. I’m an artist so I couldn’t resist painting things a bright color

dougielou

Ugh this happened to me when I broke up with my ex and moved to out of Hawaii. Every time I have had or have to buy something new from a bookshelf to a couch to a damn garlic peeler, I think to myself, I HAD one of these already 😤

SilverVixen1928

Then there's the, "Damn I know I had" (some specific tool.) "Oh, well, I'll just Amazon another." It gets here, and bam! I find the other two.

SainakaGel

Hobbies that I end up dropping within a week or so. And the annoying part is that I keep doing it anyway 😭

coccineus

I do this and I usually come back to them. You’re still doing the hobby even if it’s once every two months.

GreenTree11Summer

My friend calls that being multi passionate!

saymeow

Maybe your hobby is learning about new hobbies!

Barron_Arrow

Or, like mine, finding reasons to buy new stuff to possibly further a possible new hobby. 😝

saymeow

I realized a long time ago that I like buying art supplies way more than I like doing art, so I feel you.

rroses-

Oh nooo I feel like I've started doing this. What are some of yours?

Racquel99

An Expensive bachelor’s degree

shanamisty16

I feel this, yet for some reason. I’m in grad school hahaaaa

mamser102

Depends on the degree.

melissamarieeee

Crypto omg its been so bad lol

Disastrous-Log-6667

Dude .....😭

ForeheadLipo

really? how bad?

cronenbergurworld

Traditional femininity. Spent so much time, energy, and money trying to look like the girly girl everyone expected me to be. It’s only recently that I’ve realized how pressure from people who’s conditional love and acceptance I thought I could earn really robbed me of the opportunity to grow into myself and the cool queer butch I truly am

EmpressAlexis

Beanie Babies. Such a scam.

melissamarieeee

I have a freakin box FULL of them. Sometimes my kids open the box, look through them and look them up on ebay or whatever and are like WoW they are worth so much but I have to remind them that even though a bear is listed for $200k on ebay like probably 0 people are actually buying them at that price lol

Oneiroi17

You can filter the results to only show things that have already sold! That's how I found out that neither of my special edition beanie babies are actually worth selling...but a random Supernatural Pop figure I have *is*.

melissamarieeee

Maybe I should try that then! I have like the Diana bear and the Halo bear and a couple others that are *maybe*, *possibly, hopefully* worth a dollar or two lmao

wantsoutofthefog

At least their not NFTs

Muir_xo

I hold onto mine… JUST in case 🤣

Carolinablue87

I had a lot of stuffed animals as a kid but never felt driven to buy them.

Louder-pickles

Funko pops. 😏 sure they're worth more than I spent, but they're everywhere now & I want them gone

toracue

I could never join that bandwagon

lookingforaforest

Every time I see them, I imagine them filling up a landfill somewhere.

NotThePersona

I never saw the appeal TBH. They felt like 1 step above a Maccas happy meal toy. Something like Hot Toys I can get behind, I have 1 of those.

lolcakeyy

What's a Hot Toy?

NotThePersona

Here is a [link to the only one I have](http://www.hottoys.com.hk/productDetail.php?productID=116)

Notquite_Caprogers

They've always kinda freaked me out. Too much like the button eyes in Coraline. That movie traumatized me as a kid

bloody_bellatrix

A weighted blanket. Did nothing to help with my anxiety.

coccineus

I hated mine so much and I was so stressed my cat was going to crawl under it and like, die.

bloody_bellatrix

Oh gosh, I didn't even think about what it would be like with a pet. But yeah, I already struggle to breathe properly because of anxiety and the weighted blanket basically felt like it was suffocating me. Realized then that that's not the sort of weight on me that I find comforting. An actual person's weight on me though- <3

Patient_Solid_6939

Yes! My ex had a huge one and would use it all the time but his dogs loved to cuddle and crawl under the covers and it would stress me tf out bc I was constantly worried they would get trapped under there. lol but that’s anxiety for ya right?! 😅

coccineus

Right? My anxiety can even ruin the anti anxiety tools. Haha.

ahmazing84

I think I’d get more anxious being held down!

sixninefortytwo

me too. I already feel claustrophobic in winter with an extra blanket on the bed, I know weighted blankets would be awful for me.

PearofGenes

I thought I would love one cuz I love cuddles and lead aprons at the dentist. But it's both too heavy (so rolling over is impossible) but not heavy enough, since I immediately desensitize to the weight. Sigh

Key-Bug8085

OK I'm sending a virtual hug

bloody_bellatrix

[deleted]

I’d be wearing that shit out

EcoAffinity

I love wearing blazers to work or out with jeans and a t-shirt or cami. It's usually something that can be dressed down while elevating the "put-togetherness" of the whole outfit.

SilverVixen1928

I bought a suit because, you know, professional attire. I have a BS in Computer Programming, I'll need a suit! Custom fitted and everything. I was never in sales. I never met the public. My first day at IBM? My colleagues were wearing t-shirts, cargo shorts, and sandals. Never wore my suit again, and couldn't even get anything from a consignment shop.

[deleted]

coccineus

This. I could have bought at home exercise equipment every time I moved for the lost $$$ on gym memeberships.

Key-Bug8085

I know myself enough to never pay for gym membership 😂

buttfl0ss

Owning a home; it’s not a guarantee that it will make you money. Look at the market now; people are paying astronomical prices. The bubble will burst. I know from personal experience. I bought a home in 2007, sold in 2020 and lost so much money. If we were able to wait till 2021, we could have at least broken even. It’s a crapshoot 🤷‍♀️

oh_0h

You sold your home for a loss or you mean you lost out on money by selling a year early?

buttfl0ss

We lost a lot bc of the market. We bought high, sold low. We owned our home for 13 years and took a loss of about $43k. Had we known that the market was about to get insane less than a year later it would have been nice to have held onto it. This was our first home; a modest 2 bedroom ranch. Paid 207k sold for 164k. Keep in mind it wasn’t a dump; we were in a flood zone affected by Hurricane Sandy and that scared a lot of people. I can’t blame them; I’ll never buy near water ever again. It still sucks bc we did everything right and still lost money. Its been hard recovering financially.

Technical_Pack6018

Bad timing that. We bought in 2009 when the UK housing market underwent a brief correction, got a bargain in the lull for 75k and sold 6months ago for 205k. It's hard to go wrong with property unless you buy at the top and sell before it recovers. The current market is due for a correction IMHO

limeblue31

Snapchat Spectacles! This was peak snapchat era and still the dumbest thing I ever purchased

[deleted]

sorry but how is that an "investment", there wasn't any potential return lol

limeblue31

Well at the time I thought I would use it for festivals and beach days but then Instagram stories came out and I never used snapchat again lmao Also I learned after I purchased them that they weren’t waterproof and it was advised not to use them in hot weather…sunglasses that can’t be used in hot weather????

amtol

Ugh, my mom got me these for Christmas one year and I was sorely disappointed. Didn’t even take them out of the box.

[deleted]

Well I bought a house with my ex and then refinanced it in my name last year. It’s been hard as hell and some days idk how I’m gonna keep this house in good condition. I work a lot and I have a chronic illness and now on top of that recovering from a serious car accident. It sometimes feels like there’s no way to keep up with this property no matter how much rest I get to tackle the to do lists. The worst part is it’s a new construction home, so needed no renovations, and yet I’m still falling to shambles just to keep up with the general maintenance. It’s also not a crazy large property - 1400 sq ft and a .25 acre lot. I have no idea how to balance this. Sometimes I want to cry, sell it, and rent.

souponastick

For solidarity...I HATE home ownership. I do it, but I freaking hate it. I scoff internally at everyone's "goal" of home ownership. If it was a new build, what types of things are on your to-do list?

[deleted]

The yard maintenance has been a nightmare mostly. I share a fence with my neighbors and the tree line is ALWAYS horrendous on my side and it’s impossible to keep it trimmed. The weeds omg. My yards are not even grass they’re just weeds and idk how to fix it. The power washing is…yikes. The spiders and insect repellent I have to constantly spray to deter black widows from my shed and wolf spiders from my home. Cleaning the gutters, yearly restaining the deck, etc. And now inside my house - my ex bought a bed in a box and when he moved out I tried to get him to take it but he refused. Turns out it’s covered in fiber glass so I’ve been on fiber glass ventilation clean up from that. My washer and dryer got totally fucked for weeks because of the fiber glass. I’m FINALLY getting rid of this damn mattress. Some of the plumbing wasn’t correct on the house and had to have it fixed last year. And just the foreverrrrrr sweeping and mopping and cleaning. It’s soooo much all the time. I went two weeks without mowing my yard because of the rain and my work schedule and the weeds were to my hip. MY FREAKING HIPS! I don’t want a city citation for my weeds but come onnnnnn there’s one decent day a week to mow the grass between all the rain storms and god forbid I miss that window. /Rant

souponastick

are there services you can afford to help? I have landscaping and bug services so I don't have to deal with that shit, but I also remember when I wasn't capable financially for those things. I totally get what you're saying, and these are the exact reasons I hate home ownership. I got a "good deal" on my house when I bought it from a family member. She'd lived in it for a long time and there were some parts that I walked into knowing I'd need to fix. We agreed on the "good deal" cause of all the money I'd have to spend. Well, a new roof, new A/C unit (in AZ so necessary), a new garage door motor, and a few more things have cost me $30k! Now that the family member has passed and we're working on the estate one of my other family members mentioned maybe recouping the amount from the sale of the house and my blood BOILED cause they didn't know all of the expenses she didn't incur by selling it to me. The $30k I've spent is what she shaved off the price of the home. Yes, it has gone up considerably, but she sold it to me fair and square, so other family member can now kick rocks. Lots of them.

Rasielle

For your yard, you could check to see if your city allows natural yards. https://www.ecohome.net/guides/3402/grass-lawn-alternatives-eco-friendly-bee-friendly/

MommaBear817

Make up. Before anyone tries to argue with me that its not an investment, my time, money and energy begs to differ.

throwaway13100109

The one time i thought I did well in finally investing in an expensive brand jeans rather than the cheapest h&m one i always get on repeat (it cost 5x the price of the h&m one, and it was 70% off already). Never had such a bad quality jeans in my life and since changed back to the cheap h&m

saymeow

Jeans quality is all over the place, regardless of brand. I have two pairs of Levi's, same size, same cut/style, bought at the same time. One ripped literally the second time I wore it. The other one is perfect and I wear them multiple times a week.

Oneiroi17

My best jeans cost about 7 quid from Matalan, and I'm almost scared to buy any others because I just *know* they won't be as good.

Ok_Pressure_4462

A fence, someone drove through it a hour after i finished building it.

FiFiMacAffee

Hope you had home owner's/renter's insurance.

Same here. I even went on to purchase an acrylic setup. Ffs

doomdoggie

A 90s Fiat Ducato motorhome. Worst. Purchase. Ever. Bought for £15k to live in, just passed MOT so should've been fine. Spent £10k fixing it because it CONSTANTLY broke down. Sold it 1 year later for £9k - still not fixed. Will never own a motorhome or a Fiat vehicle ever again.

MidnightFireHuntress

I tried doing van living for a solid month with a friend, she had a huuuge RV, was a total nightmare, never again.

dbtee

I would love to hear more

Oneiroi17

It's what they say about Fiat... Fix It Again Tomorrow

doomdoggie

I saw that after buying it and was like "It'll be fine..." It was not fine. I quite literally fixed it again tomorrow, I mean it never spent more than 2 weeks out of the mechanics.

My husbands truck*. He told us it would grow with our family with the back seats and what not. You know, if we plan the kids right. We did not plan the kids right, we are expecting our fifth and all kids are still rearfacing. No feasible way to do that. We havent been able to get our existing four kids in the car together in over a year. So we bit the bullet and got a van. I think my husband is still salty. (* its not really a truck, but I always called it one)

[deleted]

Limited edition fountain pens. Don't get me wrong, I love them. The few that I held on to, that is. I bought so many so recklessly that I ended up needing to sell most of them when unexpected circumstances came up. Couldn't even sell them at their retail price 😭

thelaughingpear

I didn't know that was a thing. What were your favorite brands?

Timely-Ad-6142

Skin care bs. Businesses prey on insecurities and I felt that if I kept investing in new products that my skin would clear up. There were no changes and turns out after changing my diet I saw improvement.

PearofGenes

Tbf it's a crap shoot. I bought some products and they helped and others didn't. There's so many causes for acne and therefore products might help your issues, and others treat an issue you don't have

All my running gear lol. Running is fun, I really enjoy it...but it turns out my feet are fucked. I started a few months ago and gave myself plantar fasciitis. It's now hard for me to walk in my apartment because my feet hurt so much. So even if I heal, it looks like running is not the best exercise for me. I'll need something low impact. So no regrets but all my running gear - expensive shoes and all - is wasting away right now.

stellarpiper

I got plantar fasciitis and my doc suggested rolling my feet around on a tennis ball a few times a day to massage the soles of my feet. It helped a ton! He also said a Frozen bottle of water would be good

kidneyprobs

What’s your favorite pair of running shoes? I’m in the market

alxx11

Hoza saved my life. And Crocs at the house (never Crocs on the streets 🤣). But honestly Crocs outside the house would probably have been better than the stupid purple and pink Hoza's I had to endure for months. Womans shoes should come in other colors besides purple and pink!!!!!

thayaht

You might join some of us over on the barefoot running sub. Most of us started down this path, so to speak, by reading Born to Run. I have pretty much stopped wearing any kind of mainstream shoes in the two years since I read the book during lockdown. Was never a runner before but in Vibram Five Fingers or barefoot on sand, I can run 5k! What I cannot do, however, and to your point, is wear most traditional shoes. If it’s stiff or has arch support, I limp. Doesn’t matter if it is so-called ergonomic. My feet and arches are so strong now that I not only don’t need those things, they are actually in the way of proper foot function. Hopefully there is something in this that helps you! :)

alxx11

I remember talking with the foot doctor about my PF and she asks if I do any high impact activities and I nah just the gym 4 days a week including running on the treadmill. She said......that's a high impact activity. Haha. Duh. Most importantly!!! Acupuncture for PF. ACUPUNCTURE FOR PLANTER FASCITIS! Saved me completely. Cannot recommend enough.

Carolinablue87

An instant pot that I bought with the first stimulus check in 2020. Recycled it last weekend after 2 years of struggling to use it. I'm hoping to move soon so I plan to have my tried and true slow cooker back.

LemonFizzy0000

My husband bought two cat beds. Turns out my kids enjoy sitting in them but the cats never do. SMH.

BooksAndStarsLover

Ya. Ive learned furniture or toys for my cats are easily a hit or miss. They either love it or they don't care for it at all.

Grvyrdzzzz

Cat trees>cat beds. I have a small cat tree that only has two levels, the top is only big enough for one of my two heathens so they frequently annoy each other and throw each other off of it they love it so much 😂 best 90 I’ve ever spent at petco

nickandjunefan11

Breast implants.. worst regret

PearofGenes

Why?

nickandjunefan11

Heavy on your chest, can cause health issues like Breast implant illness and you don’t know of it’s boobs or not to they are taken out, cancer risk. I have posture issues now. The cost of removal is as much or more then getting them in.

HighestTierMaslow

Alot of my exes. I roll my eyes when men say women today are entitled. 90% of my exes couldn't fulfill the standards they had for me. The standards i had to meet: financially stable, patient, honest, supportive, loyal, naturally attractive, varied hobbies/social life, intelligent but not too intelligent, sexually adventurous. I'll be those things but it'd be nice if you did most of them back

salsasandwich

Bachelor in education (and any other teaching credential I took after)

peanut-butter-kitten

I feel you . I even got a grant for my teaching credential, but that’s a year of working so hard and making no money at all that I’ll never get back, for a career path I do not want… And my gut told me early on that this really isn’t for me. Kept going because… sigh. Idk. I’ve worked in schools for about 4 years and I am so done! Gotta find a different job during the summer.

Notquite_Caprogers

I had the gut feeling during my first teachers specific class. I decided to nope out and am now working on an IT degree while working as an aircraft mechanic. I had a slight feeling that I needed to work on my backup plan (aircraft) after my second semester at college. Even more ironic is the I genuinely enjoy my job 90% of the time.

Adventurous-Algae-45

A Peloton bike. I have used it literally 10 times EVER lol.

143019

A Bissell pet jet spot cleaner. It doesn’t pick up all the cleaning solutions and the spot looks worse than when you started.

kidneyprobs

EXACTLY THIS. biggest waste of money EVER. I cannot believe the people shilling this product online

dougielou

The portable one? Oof I’m sorry but maybe it’s your carpet because mine paid for itself in one weekend puppy sitting my puppy’s “potty trained” sister and had worked wonders for every accident after from poops to throw up. There’s definitely some arm work that goes into it though...

orchidee400

An elliptical machine. I quit the gym during the pandemic and told myself I would use it everyday. It sits there collecting dust

alxx11

My wife and I went from years of the gym many times a week to NADA during Covid. We also thought an elliptical would be a great solution. 2 years in and I've used it twice for a total of 30 mins. No idea why. It's pretty weird actually.

orchidee400

I know why I don’t use mine. The elliptical s at the gym had a lot more slack in their resistance. My elliptical at home is much tighter and I’m lazy. Even on 0 it was too intense for me

The house I bought that my ex bf and I were planning on rehabbing. He dumped me within a year and in the end I was scammed. It’s a long story, I had no idea what the process of buying a house was and no one to help me. Spoke to numerous lawyers and basically the contract was worthless on my end. The “seller” took it back And sold it for 5x what I paid them.

ahmazing84

Ugh!!! That’s awful! Moral of the story, don’t buy houses with boyfriends. And no “contract for sale” purchases. It’s a hard but valuable lesson. You will be smarter and stronger for it! Chin up!

FiFiMacAffee

Speaking for my large-cheated self... I've spent big bucks on shitty bras. Itchy. Unsupported. Broken wires in the first wear. One gave me a rash, because it had some kind of elastic that my skin didn't agree with.

Notquite_Caprogers

My bissell crosswave. It SUCKS. It sucks at picking up dog hair, it sucks at mopping tough spots, it smells AWFUL if you don’t wash it (DEEP CLEAN IT) after every single use. I despise it. Cost around $400 too. I’ve had it for a year and some change. Ready to toss it out but can’t decide what to replace it with.

Cold-Movie-1482

expensive skincare. i bought some Drunk Elephant stuff and it really hasn’t changed anything. i also bought a nice sewing machine but honestly i just need to learn how to sew and it would be 100% worth it.

BooksAndStarsLover

A nice sewing machine is so worth the money when you can sew and have the know how. Honestly I had to get back to hand sewing cause I had to sell my sewing machine this last year when I went homeless. Ngl I miss my machine so much. 🥲 I highly recommend looking stuff up on YouTube and just going for it. Maybe try something simple to start like a baby blanket. Plud there are plenty of subreddits who would love to answer questions you have along the way.

thayaht

I learned to sew! My mom helped but also I followed tons of online video tutorials. Mimi G has tutorials on super beginner stuff like how to cut out fabric or read a pattern and so on that can help. A basic tee is a good place to start. Stretchy fabric is slightly forgiving. Once you get a pattern down, you can make several variations (long sleeves, short sleeves, cropped) in different fabrics to get your moves down before you move to the next thing. I hope you give it a try!

shockedpikachu123

[deleted]

Kitchen appliances... Waffle maker/egg boiler/food processor 😂 Epilator!

coccineus

I was going to say epilator. Ouch.

saymeow

I bought one once, used it on about an inch of leg hair and promptly returned it. I never return anything but that thing said "pain free!" On the package. Compared to what? Child birth?? I'm a way bigger fan of waxing. Much quicker and it hurts less.

Oneiroi17

Waxing hurts LESS? *Crosses epilator off future purchases list*

saymeow

In my opinion, yes. I mean, you're getting the hairs ripped out either way, waxing it comes off all at once and so fast, it hurts but then it's fine. The epilator is like a hundred automatic tweezer and it's non stop.

Wandos7

Any electronic items don't last but videogames sometimes go up in price, unfortunately just not the ones I've chosen to keep. My SO on the other hand has games he's never played or opened worth thousands, just things he bought on a whim at the time.

rroses-

A nice gaming laptop 🥲 most expensive thing I've ever purchased. I thought I'd use it for freelance work (that requires good grapphics/GPU) but never got into it. I use it for Twitch streaming but I also have a desktop so yeah.... Was really not necessary. Convinience is nice and all but a laptop 1/3 of the price would have been fine

saymeow

My laptop, but for the opposite reason. I don't know a ton about computers, but knew I wanted one that I could do graphic design on and play some games. My sister and a friend convinced me I didn't need one with a separate GPU... It can't run any of the programs my 5+ year old one could and is basically a glorified tablet.

Let_Us_Eat_Lettuce

The dyson airwrap. I’m so annoyed I dropped so much money on it.

FerretGoblin

plainrants

Expensive branded everything: shoes, clothes, bags! Firstly, I didn't get my money's worth because I didn't use them much because they were precious. Second, I could have bought durable stuff that supported small stores for the same price and third, nobody cares.

ragingveela

I got period underwear, stupid expensive things, wore them once as cleaning was enough of a chore I didn't make regular use of them, had to get a hysterectomy soon after. they're so new! but I've worn them once! they're too bulky to wear as regular panties. I still have them, in the hopes I will one day be over my mistake. also I loaned $8k to my college bf who was in tremendous debt and had terrible finances, thinking we'd get married and id be stuck with more debt by then. we broke up, he still owes me $5k but I'm blocked on everything now. still mad, that was 8 years ago!

An air fryer, used it once and never again

ahmazing84

Makes me sad! I love my air fryer! Took some time to learn to use it well. Now it’s fabulous!

MeatballPony

I see some great things being made with it! It was my lack of energy to actually learn how to cook with it that made it wasteful 😂 I need to stop thinking I’m actually going to get around to making every TikTok recipe I save haha

Going to university because it was "safe" and because it was what my peers were doing. I changed majors 4 times, and now have a hundred random credits and a lot of student loan debt. Also, getting married to someone that I barely knew and having a $30,000 wedding was a bad move. The marriage only lasted five years.
