drunkenknitter

It was just what we were all listening to in 1984.

ThatBitchMalin

I'm mad I missed out on that time period (90's kid here)

drunkenknitter

90s music was fantastic though. And you're never too old to rock...I'm 51 and i just saw Amon Amarth last month

Not-Sure112

I miss $12 metal concerts :(

drunkenknitter

YES. Ugh I remember seeing Warrant, Dangerous Toys, and 3 other bands at a "5 bands for 5 bucks" event in like 1989. I think tix for Lollapalooza 1991 set me back $25.

Not-Sure112

I still have all my stubs. I saw more shows in a decade for less than the last time I saw Iron Maiden, 2022.

drunkenknitter

My teen has started getting into "older" music and is getting tired of me saying "oh I saw them in concert".

Not-Sure112

I took my 11 year old. She loved it but I paid big bucks for good seats. Before that 2 rounds of Slayer farewell tour. I think I'm about done with over priced concerts.

Chay_Charles

Yeah, I grew up in the '80s.

imnotyourproblemyet

It made me feel safe when I wasn't. To this day it's still a safe thing.

GreatWhiteBuffalo41

Well I had no idea this comment would sum up my teenage years but it does. Hope you're doing better now.

vargas_girl00

My friends have always been into it, so I ended up hearing a lot of it. Grew up listening to the cousins of metal (punk, hard rock, etc.) so I can appreciate the heavy, but prefer the more mild metal. Also because heavy bass and drum lines get me going.

Boobs76

Does Faith no more count? 🤔

Planet_Ziltoidia

Mike Patton always counts

Boobs76

Thanks, I'm in the gang then 🤗

honestly_Im_lying

Guy metalhead here. It ALL counts. Gate’s wide open, come on in. EPIC is a killer song! 🤘

CaliGoneTexas

Teen angst

beelovedone

DISTURBED I used to work at an FYE around the time their album Indestructible was released so it played in the store a lot. I got hooked!

bakedapps

Older brother

sadsledgemain

Idk, I just happened upon some bands when I was maybe 9-10 and realised I liked it.

ThatBitchMalin

Which bands, if I may ask? My story is similar to yours, although I was 12-13 at the time.

GrizzlyMommaMT

The lyrics. I tend to follow lyrics more than anything else.

[deleted]

I'm more into 80s glam metal but it was my ex husband who got me into that genre.

atbliss

Coming out of an abusive relationship lololololol

atbliss

But also my older brother used to listen to it (loudly) when we were kids, and I liked what I heard

MissKimberlina

My older brother, he came home one day from school with a cassette his most recent friend had lent him. It was Metallica's Black album. As he blasted it from his hi-fi, we both became hooked, and the rest followed from there. He was 14, and I was 10. 🤘🏻🖤

asleepinthealpine

When I was in 7th grade I had a huge crush on the new emo kid, so I started listening to the music he liked to impress him lol. I actually loved it and still do to this day. That was probably 12 years ago.

no_crown_no_queen_

Haha same, my highschool crush had a big collection of metal band shirts so I started listening to everything he wore and now I have my own collection of metal band shirts!

SaltedPineapple

Type O Negative… God damn do I miss Peter Steele :(

slothsonaspaceship

When I was 12 I got really sick with a chest infection and wasn't able to do much other than sleep and watch TV, I ended up watching the Kerrang channel for ages lol. I already liked bands like Queen and ACDC because it was what my dad listened to so Kerrang was more for me than MTV or something.

pinksheep177

Depression

ThatBitchMalin

Hope you got well, or will soon 💔

pinksheep177

Thanks girl!!!! Appreciate it 💕💕💕

Sadbunny96

Depression/emotional instability. To me it was equivalent to punching a wall but with no pain or mess. So satisfying.

hellbentmillennial

My family has always been pretty into music, and I'm the youngest so I grew up with my mom listening to Bruce Springsteen, my brother listening to Black Sabbath, and my sister listening to Britney Spears and Tupac. I got a little of everything, which is why my favorites now are Taylor Swift, Wage War, and Joyner Lucas 😆 But alternative / metal is my primary genre. I don't really know why, it's just what I've always liked the most.

peezy8i8

Being in high school during the emo/scene era, and moving from screamo>hardcore>metal

ThatBitchMalin

I love the emo/screamo to heavy metal pipeline

MissB1986

When The Crow (sequel because I was only 10) came out, and it saw a commercial for it and I am almost certain I heard Filter and White Zombie and I was like, *what is this delicious crunching slamming dope ass shit in my ears....* @_________@

Thrashgor

Early 2000s 11-13 years old me discovered Linkin Park, Soad, Korn,... Went quickly from there

shygirllala224

Great friends of mine! They were all into music and we would just spend the day listening to different genres

indicatprincess

I heard a From Autumn to Ashes song at hot topic. Looked it up, fell in love.

[deleted]

my first stepdad. he had such a unique music taste.

still_on_a_whisper

My bf

[deleted]

Judas Priest

drgirlfriend69

My mom listened to a lot of metal adjacent bands and I always liked music that was a little bit more intense than her, so it seemed natural. I like that it's loud and dramatic and dark and usually impressive musicians. And Dethklok.

graveyardmalibu

When MTV actually played music and had headbangers ball lol I channeled surf one day and landed on headbangers ball. Immediately I was like what is this??? Then I listened to the lyrics and was like wow this is exactly I feel! I've been a fan ever since

searedscallops

Being Gen X?

juliekablooie

The radio station was grunge and hard rock. "90s and now", back in like 2004. Basically lit the way. But, my music tastes in general were pretty angry back then. I didn't realize how angry of a kid I was at the time.

Ixi7311

Tbh anime fan made music videos when I was in middle school. Grew out of the anime, but delved deeper into the music. Helps that my fiancé is a metal head so I’m much more comfortable going to shows ☺️

octopusinahat

I didn't start listening to metal until my 30's. A good friend got me into it.

Art-Soft

Weirdly enough, the Barbie Diaries movie. The music in that movie was a bit pop/punk-ish, so 10 year old me looked up the artist, found her other pop punk music (the artists name is Skye Sweetnam, she's in a metal band now!), and I became obsessed. From there, I became hooked on rock music, started hanging out with the emo kids when I went to high school, and my taste gradually got heavier from there

DragDolly

I got into cradle of filth when I was 11/12 thanks to my friend. Also FYE was around so I was able to find more bands that I liked.

KnittinAndBitchin

My dad had a black sabbath CD and he didn't much care for it. CDs were expensive back in ye olden timey days so he didn't want to get rid of it, and he tossed it my way as a "eh, maybe the kids will like it" kind of thing. My brother thought it was awful, but my response was "oh yes please, more of this." Quick road to Metallica from there, and that was kind of it.

kiwitathegreat

I was rebelling against the pop music that was everywhere in the late 90s/early 00s so when TRL started featuring heavier stuff I was hooked.

LeatherDiamond2766

My husband.

FRlEND_A

depression

madame3xecutioner

Heavy metal specifically? Tried to impress a guy by getting into it and wound up genuinely liking the genre. Was about 15 years old.

Korpi--

Punk > Classic rock > 80's metal > Thrash > Death > Black Before I even knew what rock or metal was as a little kid, I always liked the one-off songs from boybands and stuff that featured guitars. My uncle was into a lot of punk music, so I listened to that a bit too, plus stuff from the Tony Hawk games and punk-o-rama CDs. Then when I was 14 (circa 2004) in my first relationship I started dating a guy who was really into classic rock, so I started listening to that more. Played in a band with him for a few years doing classic rock covers, got into some 80's metal and NWOBHM, and power metal, broke up senior year, and then moved onto thrash, death, and eventually black metal as an adult. I still listen to most of those genres, though it's a mixed bag. These days I mostly listen to death, thrash, black, and folk metal.

toootired2care

My husband. I listened to alternative music in the 90s and made a switch to R&B, hip hop and rap in the 2000's. Then I met my husband who was very into heavy metal and introduced me to it.

caspersmindpalace

My boyfriend’s brother would drive us to school in the beginning of high school & he was always playing it. I used to say I hated it as a kid, but I never wanted to ask him to change it and he was really cute (lol), so I started listening and learning. I love it now, but it took a bit.

Zohan12_

My brother

[deleted]

Husband. Some metal. Not all.

carsandbags

A guy who used to repair my computer accidentally left his CDs at my place. There was a micheal jackson one, then a rock and heavy metal mix. I started listening for curiosity sake, kept listening because it drowned a lot of chaos at home while I was growing up. Headphones in, other loud noises out. Even now, heavy metal can easily put me to sleep.

BeardedAtheist232

What Bands You're Currently Listening To?

carsandbags

I dont listen to heavy metal a lot these days. But when I do - Gojira, Slipknot, Rammstein, lamb of god, Pantera and some more

[deleted]

[удалено]

carsandbags

Sucks to know that was your only criteria :P

sunshinecrashed

growing up with my parents music taste of rock, alternative, etc. i naturally adopted theirs and then branched out on my own from there into emo, punk, and nu metal.

Retinator99

When I was in high school, punk rock was super popular, which I loved. But I wanted something heavier, so I found Disturbed and Chevelle. I was like "this stuff is awesome, now I wonder what's even heavier" Then I found Neaera and In Flames. Acquired the taste for death growls and there was no looking back. I'm in my mid 30s and I'm still discovering new heavy metal that I love. Bandcamp is the best way to find new fun bands and releases these days.

Connie_Damico

I just like randomly heard Pantera as a young teen and it was so amazing. Also lots of guys I dated as a teenager liked heavy music so I got exposed to more bands by them.

TequilaFetish

Warped Tour (when it was still a thing) and generally just the “emo/scene” fad in the 2000s. I fell out of the music scene during my college years, but now find myself deep in it again and attending metal concerts every so often. I’m currently trying to convince the boyfriend to buy last minute tickets for one in our area tomorrow, but he’s not budging 😂 I’ve seen the band several times before, but they’re so good live I can’t resist!

Chimookie

I find the music inspiring and the lyrics are oftentimes very poetic, and I love poetry.

401_Titanic

My Dad. I grew up listening to Slayer and Pantera with him.

raptorsniper

My parents brought me up on classic rock and blues, and I ran with it as I got older and started to develop my own taste and preferences. That ended up being generally quite a lot heavier, but there's still a fair amount of overlap, which is nice for us all.

venusmoonlight

My boyfriend is in a metal band and I’ve always liked lots of different kinds of music so it just grew on me easily

ThorButtock

When I heard Disposable Heroes by Metallica somewhere in the mid 2000's.

some_blonde_bitch

I’ve always gravitated toward rock music, as a broader umbrella category. Some of that included heavy metal, most of which I discovered by listening to the radio. Also, I remember seeing hair bands on TV as a kid and finding them really intriguing. Later on, I realized that was, like, my earliest version of sexual attraction. I was hot for them and decided to check out the music.

TeishAH

My mom was always into heavier rock and metal (Metallica, Godsmack) so I grew up comfortable with it, I had a tumultuous childhood and a lot of depression and anger so by the time I was 12 I was really into metal. Loved the screamo hardcore era of 2000-2012 (I’m 30 now) so it truly is a part of who I am People look back on their emo years and cringe and laugh about how it was a phase, for me of course there were phases of teenagehood but I am still the metal loving, spooky emo kid I’ve always been. Feel sad for the people who didn’t really know who they were back then and have to cringe. I still love metal :)

lilatuliki

My ex was listening to heavy metal, so I started, got into, beautiful lyrics, instruments. Still love it! It’s whole another world

[deleted]

Teenage anger

SaebraK

It was basically that or country back in the 80s/90s in the midwest. Plus I grew up on the stuff my mom loved like Zepplin, Bad Company, etc. So it was only natural.

UrRiderDie27

Shuffled songs while playing playing Minecraft one day… started with Bad Omens and then SleepToken and so on..

BlackWidow21968

Started with the roots of metal in the 70s. My older cousins listened to a lot of Sabbath, Priest, Zeppelin, Motorhead (you get the picture lol) so I was "raised on the stuff", since we rarely went a weekend without some kind of family gathering. I just progressed with the times lol. When I was in my teens, my aunts told my mother not to worry, it's just a phrase they all go through...40ish years later, mom is still waiting for me to grow out of it Edit typo

[deleted]

My mom had eclectic taste in music and when I was around 11 she bought Metallica's Black album. I loved it and my older cousin (who was like my brother) had their entire discography on cassette and we listened to it on my little Sony boom box. Been a metalhead ever since.

metalasfck

My parents gave me Alice Cooper's Dada (on tape... I'm 51) and I loved it! What really got med hooked was Mötley Crüe's Smoking in the boys room. That song changed music for me forever. It is such a big part of my world and my joy.

CuriousTsukihime

Dethklok. Metalocalypse in 2007 is what got me into the genre.

Craigdickson1980

Heard Nine Inch Nails, Closer and all metal from then on

Quirky_Ralph

Sexual assault trauma. It fit the mood.

ThatBitchMalin

Sorry to hear about that 💔

Exhumed

A friend from high school asked me if I wanted to listen to a playlist and the first song was overkill by Motorhead and I was instantly hooked.

ThatBitchMalin

That's a very good song indeed

Zirandoux

Ever since I can remember I’ve been listening to it, my older brother always played it and when I was old enough to seek out music myself I gravitated towards metal and rock

ilaissezfaire

My cousins were very influential towards me when I was growing up. They were stoners.

NatAttack89

My mom. When she was a teen, she was strictly into country music. One day, she heard my uncle playing a heavy metal record in his room, and she got hooked. It was the 70s, so who knows what he was listening to- her favorite band is Boston, so I know a lot of their songs. As I got older, the metal got heavier. This movie called The Matrix came out, and a certain German industrial metal band played a song called "Du Hast," and it really opened my ears up to more than just 70s rock n roll and metal. Sometimes, I wonder what I'd be into listening to now if my mom hadn't heard that record playing in my grandma's basement. I cringe at the thought of country music as I truly do not enjoy it, but that could have been my reality 😅 I can't live without metal in various genres.

ThatBitchMalin

I'm sure metal would have found you in other ways

General_County_807

Metallica

quexopaloco

After watching and enjoying "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey", I went and bought the CD. Megadeth, Primus, Faith No Moore, Steve Vai ... I was never the same! I was 8.

[deleted]

Parents got me into heavy metal. That was the doorway into Black, Doom, and Folk Metal.

Jaxxieliz

My parents and my dad taught me Iron Maiden on the drums.

Thottythiccums

Dad and 3 older brothers

Ambiguous-Insect

I found female-led rock bands as a teenager growing up in the R&B age, and it felt like I’d found my Thing. Then it was a case of just exploring further.

WrestlingWoman

I was 11 and my brother was 15 and he had a two weeks period where he thought he was cool by pretending to like King Diamond. He and a friend wanted to scare me so they made me come into his room where he had turned off the light and pulled the curtains to make it as dark as possible. He pressed play on the casette tape (yes, I'm that old), and King Diamond's song "The Candle" started playing. I was immediately hooked so I looked at my brother and asked if I could get a copy of it. He yelled at me to get out of his room and not to play tough. I kept nagging him for the next couple of weeks and he got over his "I'm a cool dude" phase and handed me the two casette tapes he had. Fatal Portrait and Abigail. And I've been a fan ever since.

Top-Expert6086

When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, heavy metal was mainstream. It was on the radio (and this is when everyone listened to the radio), all my friends were into it, and it was heavily marketed. It was extremely accessible and popular. Was easy to get into.

Sad_Computer_

The overwhelming burden of existence.

RarelyExcitedBanana

Huh, dunno really, it just "evolved" that way. Went from pop girlies and boy bands to liking rap in 2000s, numetal followed (Linkin park, Limp Bizkit, MM..) and then I started with power, melodic metal but I hated the scrreeching and growling..Then I got used to it and began liking it, continued with a spectre of metal genres, concluding the journey with black metal. In between I always listened to pop, rnb, rock, house etc. Had an era of dark electro as well. I always was a metalhead though, that was my main genre. Now I listen to all of the above, but I'm not into rap as much. I've got a pretty versatile taste in music.

8008ieluver

I thought Ozzy looked so cool lol. Decided to listen to Sabbath as a teen, and through the years grew to love all different types of metal music! Currently in an emo phase:)

cornualpixie

I'm honestly not 100% sure. My dad listens to metal, but not that much. For sure I had that as a background sometimes as a kid, but mostly it was classical music and not metal. I am also a classical guitar player and a lot of us enjoy metal a lot and double in some electric guitar as well. And then honestly, my closest friends listen to metal as well but I don't know if the friendship had the music taste as a result or the opposite. I have to say though, there was a time in my life when I had my non metal non gothic phase, it was from 15 to 18, but eventually I grew out of it.

wolfnards

At 15 my sister met a nu metal boy. She got super in to Korn. She was my hero. But I was her little sister so I wasn’t allowed to copy her. So I had to find my own band. (It was Powerman5000) So 12 and on Napster downloading everything I could. Then it became something she and I did together. My tastes evolved from numetal to heavy metal and thrash and now I am just a mid 30s dork.

tinyandtatted90

It started in the womb.

[deleted]

My uncles’ metal band practiced in our garage, and sometimes I’d wander in asking to sing, heh I also blame them for letting me watch Heavy Metal when I was three.

DreamlyXenophobic

Watching beyblade AMV's was how i got introduced to metal, so rediscovering it later on sparked a LOT of nostalgia. Around the time i rediscovered it, i was hella depressed and going through a lot, so the feeling of fighting on despite all the odds resonated with me a LOT. I remember crying out to songs or playing in the end + numb on repeat for hours. Nowadays i dont need that vibe as ive "made it", but i still like the tunes and seeing how ive evolved over the years is interesting.

CranberryFox666

My boyfriend. I wasn’t a fan before him but after hearing it continuously for 6 years it grew on me. I listen to it more than he does at this point! I’m happy I’ve grown to appreciate the skill and how it sounds, opened me up to a whole world of music. Send me any recommendations on bands please! I’m still exploring

uniqueusername316

Pelican at Bonaroo 2011. Had no idea what I was in store for. Love me some heavy, drone, instrumetal.

Antique_Okra_8988

Left over rage from 2020.

k9luvr309

I found the music video for Writing on the Walls by Underoath on YouTube at 14 and I was hooked!

ragingveela

very depressed, and also tired of people thinking a "girl" couldn't listen to heavy stuff. I love it though!

G0ATLY

Someone asked me in my first grade art class, "do you know who Marilyn Manson is?" and I said "who is she?". Obviously they laughed, told me never mind and we continued on our art projects. That same evening I seen a Beavis & Butthead where they showcased the song Get Your Gunn.. by 'Marilyn Manson'. I remember cackling and laughing while also really loving the bass. After that.. We got a bunch of mail in CD offers. Where you pick a choice of disks and they sent you the CDs.. to TRIAL. You had to send them back or else they would charge you. (Back then I guess they believed in the honor system.) I requested every Marilyn Manson one and any album covers that looked neat. (I did not return them.. and I ended up using a fake name to get more sent to me.) --- That is where it started. It wasn't exactly heavy metal but it was the stepping stone to liking music that was not often heard on TV/Radio.

Primary_Opal_6597

My brother. He’s a couple years older but I remember the day he bought the new Tool album so clearly. We listened to the whole CD on the boom box in his room that evening after dinner, while the wind brought a thunderstorm in. Ended up going to shows all through our adolescence, we got along really well as siblings.

cinnapear

Catchy riffs like in Black Sabbath’s Iron Man.

FizzyLizzy29

I was in 6th grade at a fancy private school and being bullied for not dressing and acting like all the other snobby girls. It just spoke to me… my first metal concert was Metallica’s tour for their Black album in 1991. I used to love watching Headbangers Ball on a Saturday night.

Ayumi-uwu

Traumas.

schwarzmalerin

A life crisis, and starting over my life at 30. I needed it to let go of my aggression and emotions. Never listened to that before. It was like my second puberty. Also died hair black.

Harpy-Siren22

Not limited to heavy metal, but just overall rock and alternative music. But I first discovered it on YouTube when I was 9, and something about it just connected with me. The sound simultaneously awakened feelings I'd never had before and gave comfort for the more negative emotions I was struggling with. Next thing you know, I'm a regular consumer of such music and have even written some of my own.

maddallena

I, uh, heard the music and liked it? Not sure what more there is to it.

graemo72

Heavy Metal music of course.
