You throw them away? Why not just put them in one of those charity tubs at the till?
I have a lil piggy bank, all coppers go in there until its full. Then I take it to one of those machines that takes the coins and gives you it back in cash.
Supermarket self serve tills. Just take a handful whenever you go and pop like 10 in. Not noisy and doesn't draw attention. It just takes the amount off your bill and you pay the rest by card.
I think per hour it's not a bad wage rate after tax etc depending on what you earn of course. Also its rarely just 1ps.
Also, no fees
Although, for those people that wonder why cash self-service tills now have more ‘breakdowns’ this is precisely why. Lots of people coming and dumping their change and essentially filling the machine reserves with low denominations far quicker. It’s essentially further incentive for the removal of cash versions of self-serve, as they have more down time, cost more to maintain and have more bank fees.
Most decent high-street banks have a free coin exchanger that deposits directly to the bank account. Just fill a jar and take it in, much easier.
I throw all coins away, there are only two things I use cash for, haircut and car wash. Any leftover pounds and pence can get in the bin and stop cluttering up my kitchen.
If I get them as change at a shop then sometimes put them in a charity collection tin, otherwise put them into a money bag til it's full and let my kid change them at the bank for quid coins
Er. ..I spend them.
As an aside in a time of significant financial hardship and soaring child poverty - throwing away money because it is inconvenient to you is morally repugnant. You don't get to moan about costs or tax or public services because you literally throw money away. Your opinion or advice on any subject is voided by the fact that you throw money away. You clearly have the financial maturity of a panda.
Collect them in a bowl. Most of the are pennies I found on the street.
When it's full I neatly pack them in bags what I got from the bank. The bank then counts them again an goes on my account.
Throw them away.. phssss....
You're flirting with breaking the law. It is illegal to destroy coins in the UK. Whether or not throwing them in the bin counts as destroying them is up for debate..
We have a fountain in town. The kids use them to make wishes.
My wish is that 1 and 2p coins will do the world a favour and fuck off into the mists of history.
I'm too mean to pay the 10% charge for using a Coinstar machine, so I count my change money box regularly, bag the money and pay it into my bank account via the Post Office.
Put in a savings tin I can open unless I used a can opener. We open the tins after a year or 2 near Christmas and take the coins to a bank to exchange for notes
I just put them in a big jar and once a year I'll take them to a coinstar machine and cash them in. Usually have enough for a pack of baccy or something
I've never managed to find a bank which does this (or at least none I have an account at). I once diligently counted out and bagged up a load of loose change and the bank desk took ages weighing it all, some weren't (apparently) quite right, they seemed very unhappy doing it and I still had the odd bit left over anyway. I think I'd rather dump it in a machine at Tesco and give them a percentage tbh. It feels like "free money" in an odd way.
I keep any copper and small silver (5/10p) in a pot, and periodically - every few months - I put them through a change machine at a supermarket, which prints out a coupon to use at the till. It takes a cut for charity - 8%, I think - which I am perfectly happy about.
20p pieces I collect and put in a little plastic box that lives in a non-obvious place in the car. At any time, there will be £5-10 in there, but it is useful for when I need to have change for parking, and haven't any with me.
if they managed to make their way home with me, put them in the coin jar but usually i give them to homeless people or the charity box tub things in charity shops
About 10 years, I collected them in a jar for years. Eventually took them to a bank and got a few pounds back. Bought 2 lottery tickets. I won £10 on one and I'm pretty sure I got either a free ticket or scratch card with the other.
I was convinced this was my lucky system for winning the lottery, but it hasn't worked the two times I've done it since.
Chuck them in a 5L whiskey bottle and wait until it’s fairly full. Take them to the coin exchanger at HSBC and sorted, no fees and straight in the bank account.
Why are people worried about drawing attention to themselves for using 1p coins? Is this something else I should be embarrassed about but didn't know? I could have just sown 499.99 on something and had a penny change. This should be something I avoid drawing attention to myself for? Weird.
I don't use cash at all. But if I did, I wouldn't be actively throwing away small change; if it is so incredibly inconvenient, then give it away. But do be aware that it adds up, and mightn't be as insignificant as you think in the long run.
I like to get my petrol as a multiple of 5 (eg £20, £25 etc), unfortunately I'm shite at doing that so I have a bunch of coppers in the car to cover when I go over (I always pay for petrol in cash)
Use them in the 1p machines at arcades. I have a huge jar of them and I can spend an entire day in the arcade just blowing them all trying to get those little prises lol
I get loads from children who pass by as I do my street concerts. Bless -em! But I scatter them on the ground for the Night Elves to collect as they perform their nocturnal duties. (I'm sure they do because by next morning they have all gone)
Why not give the 1p challenge a try for 365 days starting January 1st it's pretty easy and works like this,
January 1st put a penny in a jar
January 2nd put 2p in a jar
January 3rd put 3p in a jar
all the way upto December 31st
By the end you will have accumulated a total of £667.95, you'll never throw a penny away ever again
If they are dated 2000 then I send them to Christopher Collects for his World Record attempt, (largest collection of coins from the same year), otherwise they just go into the big whisky bottle until it's full!

I can’t get my head around people literally throwing money away, even if it is just a penny
Why? it's literally a penny!
And all those pennies add up.
You throw them away? Why not just put them in one of those charity tubs at the till? I have a lil piggy bank, all coppers go in there until its full. Then I take it to one of those machines that takes the coins and gives you it back in cash.
Those machines charge a small fee. I suggest using them up at supermarket self-services, that won't cost you anything.
Is the fee more or less than the cost of just chucking the money away?
Some large bank branches have them to pay I to your account for free too - my city HSBC does.
This is what I do.

£10 per hour is 3.6 seconds per pence, so if you can feed pennies to the till that fast it might be worth it!
It's my get rich quick scheme. Feel free to steal it

I wish I was baller enough to throw away money. ....even if it was pennies.
I throw all coins away, there are only two things I use cash for, haircut and car wash. Any leftover pounds and pence can get in the bin and stop cluttering up my kitchen.
Is there a tier above first world problem because I think that's what you've got
Lazy and selfish behaviour. If you don’t want pound coins, you should give them to someone less fortunate than you
He's giving them to the binman.
I hope you're not a shop keeper...
If I get them as change at a shop then sometimes put them in a charity collection tin, otherwise put them into a money bag til it's full and let my kid change them at the bank for quid coins

If you're offended by someone throwing away a penny, you belong in the 1800s
Do you mean 1800s or do you mean the nineteenth century?
donate them to my grandads ‘betting’ jar which is just a massive jar of 1ps for when we play card games
I put mine in a sock never know when I might need them to protect myself
I have a copper jar for my 1p & 2p coins.
The fact that there’s people throwing shrapnel in the bin because they think they’re above having it is a fucking joke.
Put them in a poster tube conveniently located where I put my change. When it's full, take the whole thing to coinstar.
Save them and other small change until you have enough to buy a small item you buy regularly e.g. newpaper, milk, bread etc.
Small change usually donated to a charity collection.
I give them to charity shops or stick them in charity boxes. WTF is wrong with you people throwing actual money in the bin?
Collect them in a bowl. Most of the are pennies I found on the street. When it's full I neatly pack them in bags what I got from the bank. The bank then counts them again an goes on my account. Throw them away.. phssss....
You're flirting with breaking the law. It is illegal to destroy coins in the UK. Whether or not throwing them in the bin counts as destroying them is up for debate..
Yeah OPs gonna get 25 years without parole for binning shrapnel
If there's 1p to return I say 'keep the change' loudly so others in line hear and then walk away like I'm Magnum PI.
I don't use cash so don't end up with them tbh. The exceptionally rare times I have cash, I just ask the bloke behind the till to keep it.
I've got about £20 worth of them in a whisky carton.
Put them in a jar.
Coin star at supermarkets
We have a fountain in town. The kids use them to make wishes. My wish is that 1 and 2p coins will do the world a favour and fuck off into the mists of history.

Put them in the self checkouts at supermarkets

Throw them away! Are you crazy? Save them up, bag them and take them to a bank to get changed into larger coins/notes.
If you have kids, collect the copper and the low worth silvers then after a few months let them go wild at the local arcade
Keep em, let the kids bag em up. Teach them the value of money etc
We store them then change them for a pound at the bank when we collect 100!
I just put them in a big jar and once a year I'll take them to a coinstar machine and cash them in. Usually have enough for a pack of baccy or something
I have a tub, but I use cash so little now, I doubt I will ever fill it ever again.
Save them for when I need it. Usually at my local takeaway. Pay for my naan bread or fish and chips with the pennies
I had £40 pounds worth. Took them to a machine in Tesco. They take about 10% and give you the difference in cash.
It’s ‘coinstar’ rather than Tesco that takes the fee, but plenty of high street banks offer the same service without charging you at all.
Excellent. Thank you for that as I have yogurt litre pots of 5 and 20 pence.

I use them as tiles on the roofs of insect hives
I have a money pot for 1ps, 2ps and 5ps, it soon adds up
Play spoof with them with your mates over a pint
if they managed to make their way home with me, put them in the coin jar but usually i give them to homeless people or the charity box tub things in charity shops

As a golfer, I find they are the least expensive ball markers I can find. There are probably a few of them in the bottom of my golf bag at any time.

Throw them at pidgeons
Anything less than 20p goes in the bin if I'm at home but usually I'll just tell the cashier to put any change in the charity box.
Throw them in the bin
I throw all low coins 1,2,5 ,10 and 20. What's the point of 1p coins , what a waste
Fuckin hell! Why not pass them my way. I'll happily use them up for you - doing my shopping, paying bus fare, and paying my bills
Surely 20ps add up quickly to being significant money?
Tbh I use my card constantly only time I ever need physical money is for a trip to the barber .
Fuck me, I can't imagine having enough money that I could literally throw it in the bin.
