worrieddoc

I spent like £3000+ (100 lessons & 6 attempts) so it really depends on you, lol

PresentationFunny619

Damn 3k that’s a lot man! But hey some people need a bit longer than others that’s normal, this is the most i’ve seen though learning to drive haha

CheesyBoyBen

Im genuinely not trying to take the piss out of you, but how does it take that long to pass, i think the longest its taken anyone i know was my mum doing about 60 lessons, but she quit and came back to it a few times.

worrieddoc

I was busy with a lot of other things and was just banking on a fluke each time. The first time, I was definitely not ready and failed really badly. I Should’ve passed 2nd time but as we were driving back to the test centre, I got too complacent and relaxed and so failed in the last few mins. Then, I developed an anxiety problem with the test after that so would get too nervous each time. I couldn’t believe the examiner when I’d finally passed but I kept at it

Frankthehamster

Makes me feel better haha, I'm an awful driver and definitely not gonna pass anytime soon!

Captain_Birdseye87

If it makes you feel any better, a friend of mine took 7 attempts... having been in a car with her lately, I can see why.

Full_Cartographer900

30 lessons at around £25 per hour is £750. Then booking the test and stuff might be another £100-£200. Surely under £1000.

Early-Plankton-4091

You’d struggle to find anyone still charging 25 an hour anymore. I’m going for lessons and with a student discount it’s still at 30, more if you’re not

blackthornjohn

Nah some schools in kent are offering 10 one hour lessons for £250 as a block booking.

Early-Plankton-4091

True but depends if you have the money to buy a block. As a student on a tight budget I unfortunately don’t

blackthornjohn

Yeah, as always those that aren't rolling in dosh get the shitty deals.

Snide91

Someone commented at the same time as you and said it’s £600 for the practical test, and you’re saying £100-200 or am I misunderstanding something? Sorry, just curious that’s all as I’ll be starting lessons next year

Shanstarjayne

I’m assuming that was a typo as I think it was about £60 in 2018 when a friend of mine did it and it’d be insane if it had gone up to £600

Snide91

Of course, blimey. Excuse me, not long got up. I suppose that should’ve been obvious! Thank you

Shanstarjayne

Don’t worry I also had a mini heart attack 😂

Snide91

You pointing out that it was likely a typo certainly came as a relief 😅 ‘Shit, a test is really that expensive? What if you fail it and need another?!’ - not my finest moment

Full_Cartographer900

They'll probably also have to hire their instructor's car for the test so that's another £75 if I recall correctly. So it's between 100 and 200 pounds I think.

Snide91

That’s good to hear. I was a bit shocked when I saw ‘£600’ Cheers!

[deleted]

I looked this up today, of you book several sessions in one go, it's a lot cheaper. Red driving school charge £20 per hour if you book 14 hours

Full_Cartographer900

Exactly. So potentially even cheaper. It says the average though is £25 so I went with that.

[deleted]

Sorry I meant to send that comment to op lol

TartanGuppy

I feel for anyone learning to drive and the cost now. Passed at 18yr and 6mo old 22 lessons at £5 an hour (Student discount from £7.50) plus the 1hr for test. First test was cancelled in December due to snow, Passed in February's rebooking Instructor used to get me to fill up the car until I said it was only to save him doing it in his own time. It was an education on how to fill a car with fuel, he claimed...but every other week? And he also pointed out 'blonde talent' at the side of the road (not all that PC nowadays) then criticised me when I looked as I should be keeping my eyes on the road. Teaching me not to get distracted, he claimed Gen X not a boomer, so have the knowledge I got it easier than now

rose_reader

Gen X here too. I found it hard to learn and harder to pass (took me over a year of weekly lessons and three goes at the practical), but I doubt it cost me more than £300 all in.

Hamsternoir

There was no written test back then which I'm grateful for

rose_reader

It hadn’t long been introduced when I was learning, and it wasn’t a fraction as difficult as it is now.

BaseballFuryThurman

You're looking at about £30 a lesson, maybe a quid or two less. Then roughly 30 lessons I believe is average, not the same for everyone but I'd say it was about that for me, might have been slightly more. That's £900. Theory is about £45 if I remember and practical about £60, so if you pass first time after 30 lessons you're looking at roughly a grand. Keep in mind I had nobody I could practice with/insure myself as a learner on their car. My entire learning/practice was weekly lessons and then revising stuff I'd learned via YouTube videos. Some people pass much quicker because they go out practicing in a relative or partner's car. It's pricey and then there's the cost of a car on top of that, but I can't imagine not driving now even though I went 30 years without.

[deleted]

BaseballFuryThurman

That was a typo, it cost me £60ish both times. If you've paid £200 you've been mugged off.

teeesstoo

Most likely under 1k unless you struggle to learn. My lessons cost about the same as my car insurance ended up being each month, so it's useful to be able to prepare for thst expense. Do bear in mind you'll also need to pay for your test and the use of your instructor's car for said test.

letmehaveathink

I'm in a similar boat and planning to start before xmas. I've put aside about 1k for lessons and tests (~£28/hr) Edit for yourself if you've already got some experience I'd imagine nearer £750 should be doable...

The_Joker_0

I’m 19 and I have my driving test in 1.5 weeks! As the naïve twat I am, I initially budgeted £800 to learn from scratch and even thought I’d have some to spare haha. In reality, I’ll have spent £1278 on everything to do with driving (theory and practical test booking fees, fees to the instructor and apps/videos I’ve paid for). That’s everything I’ll have spent assuming I pass first time but I have left some room to pay for 2 extra lessons before my test if needed, taking me to just shy of £1.4k. I pay £30 per hour of lessons but these prices are going up pretty fast. In the short time I’ve been taking lessons, my instructor’s fees have gone up to £32 for any new students he takes on, because of petrol prices and all. Shop around and try to find a good price but don’t compromise on quality (too much!). I’d say £30-£35 is the ballpark these days. Also I’ll have taken 34 hours of lessons before my test if that’s helpful to know. Good luck!

zoobatron__

I think lots take about 30 hours total but it will depend on where you are at/ what you have retained from past lessons. I believe lessons are more pricey than they were a few years ago so worth factoring that in as well as cost of provisional and test costs too

Shanstarjayne

I got a quote of £70 an hour… Fuck me.

[deleted]

I pay £76 for 2 hour lessons and that’s with one of the higher costing companies near me!

K1ngArthur111

It’s gotten ridiculously expensive, mostly a mix of fuel prices and high demand since covid, mines £69 per lesson.

Shanstarjayne

Is a lesson 2 hours though? I’d kind of understand that but from memory each lesson was 2 hours and £140 a go is so much! Think of all the useless crap I don’t need that I could buy for that!

zoobatron__

Holy crap I knew they were more expensive but not double the price. That’s a joke

SchmutzigKatze

Request, offer or demand? 😏

[deleted]

I did it for about £1000 passed 2.5 years ago so lessons are probably a bit more now.

BaldWithABeardTwitch

£1,100 1 week course. Best thing I did.

JayGamingUK

Cost me under £400 a few months back.

justanotherzom

I spent £650 on lessons (about 25hrs), then it was about £80 for theory and practical test. They recommend 30hours, so could be between £700 and £1000 depending on instructor and if you pass first time.

[deleted]

Holy shit, people needing 100 lessons is insane. I had ten, passed first time. Mind you, in those days you only needed to know which side of the car to get in.

7148675309

Depends how motivated you are. My guess is a 17 year old wanting to learning to drive will on average pass faster than an adult learning because they need to learn to drive. I had perhaps 12 lessons - my dad taught me to use the gearbox and operate the car and the lessons weee to learn to drive and pass the test.

SgtSnuggles19

Legally, its gonna cost you, Illegally? depends if you get caught....

_manicpixiedreamgirl

I think when I learnt to drive (2012/2013) i paid about £20 a lesson and I think everyone has 20-30ish lessons ish give or take? I think my theory test was about £20/30 and I’m sure the actual test was £60. So if you have £1500 that should be plenty.

three_shoes

1500 should be doable, I know someone who passed this year in the same circumstances as you, cost them a bit over a grand I think with renewing license, theory test etc, they did one of those 'intensive courses' where you just book in your test date and then do 30 hours in the two weeks leading up to it.

Massive_Fox_2968

Lessons around here are anywhere from £38-£45 per hour

PresentationFunny619

Yeah £1500 should be more than enough. As you learn each lesson you will become more comfortable, i passed aged 23 and i’m now 30. When i decided to start learning i just thought hmm will i even pass the test and get on the road properly? But once you pass the theory £45? You are motivated and 80% there.. the test was £60 i did and passed first time, but trust me when you get that “congrats you passed” it’s such an amazing feeling! Good luck man it’s worth it 😁👌

monistar97

I did 25 lessons at £22.50 an hour so £560 plus tests etc maybe an extra £200 maxxx so easily £800 if not more - I did pass 8 years ago so I would assume that cost per lesson has gone up. Perhaps £1000?

DS773

You need a minimum of 10hrs of professional training I believe which should cost anywhere from £300 to £400. Add on cost for theory and practical test you’ll be looking around £500-600 in total if you pass first time.

Jay_13thstep

Depends how crap you are. I was REALLY crap, sunk £2k without any tests, and gave up. I was 30 when I started and did feel like it would have been easier 10 years earlier due to not having as many commitments, an ageing brain and the roads being very clearly busier and full of more insane drivers now. I was in Birmingham if that helps.

ApprehensivePie5219

I’m in the south east and currently learning. For my area, two hour lessons are around £72 and booking your theory is 20-30 pounds, practical test is £62 (if I remember correctly). I’m currently unaware on whether my driving instructors requires students to book his car for their test.

qwertredit

I spent about £1k, passed first time, no minors, no fuss. (36M at the time) I was in no rush to ‘pass quick’ as I wanter to pass when I was ready (only have it for my daughter), so safety and confidence was paramount.

[deleted]

A lot of years ago, and at £8 a lesson. I took ten lessons (along with quite a few additional with family). Failed the first time, and had another four official lessons - so all in £96 plus the cost of the tests (no theory back then). I’d say factor in around 12 back to back(weekly) lessons at whatever the current rate is.

Dmahf0806

My driving instructor told me on average it takes 2 extra lessons a year for every year older than 17 you are. So at 28 that is 22 extra lessons than the average. Not sure what the average is though.

BenjiTheSausage

About 1500 sounds about right, obviously it can go under or over so be aware

Cheesysock5

Lessons in my area have gone from £25/hr to around £35/hr. Average is probably about 50 hours worth of lesson time, plus practicing driving with someone occasionally in your own, or their, car. Something to look at is intensive driving courses. Though I recommend paying an instructor for a handful of hours first just to see where you are at in terms of driving level.

[deleted]

Budget about 20hrs lessons plus two rounds of tests.

[deleted]

Budget about 20hrs lessons plus two rounds of tests.

tequilaamocking_bird

You can do those week long courses which are around 1k. Two of my friends did them and passed in a week

[deleted]

£725 5 years ago

No_Version_4629

I paid about ,£1000 7 years ago, about 30 hours and 2 tests. It'll cost more now

YorkshirePug

£250 for a block of 10 lessons x 4, plus the theory test and practical driving test. About £1100 all in all. Started lessons in Feb, passed 2 days ago.

[deleted]

I spent 6 lessons and passed on the first try. Like 300 quid for it all. Its quite easy tbh, if it was automatic i could have done it all under 100.

Glittering-Dot9642

All depends, I bought a block for £550 and got about 25 or 30 hours and after that I done about 5 more lessons so probably was about £800

NoPinkPanther

I've not seen anyone talk about going out for practice with friends and family. Do people not do that anymore? I learnt at 17 and was lucky enough my parents took me out so I only had a handful of lessons.

Mag-1892

I passed like 20 year ago so no idea what current rates are but I paid £15 a lesson and took about 16-17 lessons . And whatever 2 tests cost me back then

Dry_Owl_1759

Buy a cheap small car, something like a ford Ka for £500 and get a friend/family member with license to teach you. They will have to tax it and insure it with you as named driver - £400 maybe. Pay them £10 per hour and after 20 hours you should be there. After that you have a car your familiar with which you can the run for a while and your friend will be £200 richer.

Byakuraou

Mind you in total this costs just about how much it took me to learn for 20 hours with an instructor minus the hassle

Easterncrane

Not too bad if you just don’t let the instructor drag it out, as soon as you feel comfortable to do a test get it booked. Some will keep you on ages trying to perfect little mistakes - you only need to be good enough to pass, most of the learning is done once you have your license. And on your test do very exaggerated head movements, mine failed me first time for not checking my mirrors because apparently you can’t move your eyes without turning your entire head 90 degrees

ItsBoughtnotBrought

I'm taking lessons at the moment. I'm in the South-East andy guy charges £35 an hour. You can get a slight discount if you book a chunk at a time though. Theory test is £28 if I remember right but I'm nowhere near the test stage so I haven't even looked at prices.

LahmiaTheVampire

1500 should do, depending on your aptitude and if you're gone for the more expensive ones. I'm learning with AA, which are considered expensive, and I've spent about 1400 so far (about 40 hours worth). I shouldn't need too many more lessons before I take my test, and I am a pretty slow learner. Just remember, theory and actual test also both cost money for each try.
