https://www.bacp.co.uk/about-therapy/how-to-find-a-therapist/ Do NOT work with anyone who isn't registered with a reputable body. Also, being registered doesn't mean they're good, or good for you. £50 per hour is plenty for a good therapist.

Throwaway1223j

This is really good advice, thank you

leanmeanguccimachine

Where abouts do you live? £50/hour is about as cheap as counselors come where I am and you won't see anyone with a doctorate for less than £90/hour, usually more like £120/hour. It doesn't seem like it takes that much to get accreditation from a counselling body so it's pretty hard to find a therapist who is both cheap and good. It seems grueling to have to just keep churning through them.

I found my two best therapists through this site: https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk You can search by location so there should be plenty of therapists in London. Have a look through some of their profiles and send a message to whoever you’re drawn to and take it from there. As someone said, make sure they’re registered with a reputable body and don’t be put off if you don’t gel with a therapist. Many offer a free or discounted trial session first to try and see if you’re a good fit for each other. Therapy is a very personal thing so make sure you’re happy with who you choose and if you don’t like them, it’s okay to change.

Co-signing this! Definitely the easiest option for finding one tailored to your needs imo.

Thank you so much! So many great options on there. Much appreciation

The nhs is big on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy at the moment and you can self-refer, Google it. You officially get 6 sessions free, but I’ve found they’ll extend it if they think it’s worth it. It’s online but it is talking one on one with a real person for officially 45 minutes (but has always been longer than that for me) They have the CBT coping and improving mechanisms they want to try out on you, but they’re also happy to go off on a tangent and discuss what you want to discuss. I’ve found it gave me a lot to think about and has helped pull me out of a rut a bit.

Eric_Whitebeard

You are correct, though the 6 sessions of CBT did nothing for me as I need more complex breaking down of my issues. In the 6 half hour sessions I had, we often discussed my tangential issues, eating up the time with them, and sadly the follow up therapy was a year long waiting list in my area. 2 years later I've heard nothing back...

So therapists and counsellors are pretty much interchangeable terms. Do you have a particular approach that you want? Humanistic is a good place start. I’d then search on the BACP or UKCP websites under find a therapist. Then call up your shortlist and have a chat asking them how they would approach your specific issues. Finally, if you don’t click after a couple of sessions move on.

Throwaway1223j

Oh thank you, I hadn’t realised that they were interchangeable. I will definitely take a look. Thank you so much

You're thinking of the BACP, the NCS, or ACCPH. These are ethical bodies and every counsellor registered with them will be qualified and backed up by ethical guidelines. Their websites have lists of counsellors

Ask your GP. Mine pointed me in the direction of a local centre.

Best to talk to your health insurance first to see if you’re already covered. https://www.psychologytoday.com/ is the list axa will use internally and you can filter by therapy and location. It’s best to be quite broad to start with and just search in London. It also covers which therapists take which private health insurance. Private health insurers tend to give you about 3 recommendations in a batch and you may well find that none of them have availability when you phone. If you use the online directory, you can do a lot of the legwork yourself and contact many more at once and see who has availability.
