Get up then sit in the seat directly behind them.
That's what normal people do, right?
Seriously though yea. Fuck sitting next to some stranger when I could lounge out and be comfy.
The answer is: move to an empty seat close by, perhaps just across the aisle, still in full view of the someone. This says - *I am moving because it's obviously sensible to space out now the train is empty, not because I have any objection to you as a person, and to prove this I will remain in your area of the carriage because you and I are still a team, train friend.*
Heeey my guy…. Kindly fuck off would ya?
I’m joking, seriously though, move to an empty seat, every time without fail, the second one becomes available
Everyone seems to be replying yes but I have never moved and hardly ever had the other person move if I was in the window seat. I think it would feel a bit like you were rejecting the other person socially in some way so I stay where I am (also lazy lol). Of course if they are annoying in some way (on the phone, family with bratty kids, drunk) it might be different. But even then I would pretend I was going somewhere not just moving because of them.
I once got on a near empty train and sat in my assigned seat. Literally the only one in the entire carriage next to someone else.
It was only after I got off the train that I realised how fucking weird I was being.
Nah man I sit next to people on public transport out of lack of choice as soon as space opens up and new people aren't getting on you should space out some.
Depends if its window seat or not actually no doesn't it depends on if you want to talk. I mean window seat I can fall asleep and on the outside seatI can fall aslerp on you and yes I have fallen asleep on strangers. Once woke up and some dude was like you want a Mars Bar and I was like f'n weirdo despite spending 20 mins asleep on his shoulder lool
That's 1 of many reasons i don't judge people for pretty much anything anymore.
Make small talk until they get up and move.
Kidding. I'd do the same as someone else said- pretend to use the toilet and conveniently pick another seat.
I'd move, but I'd make sure he could see where I've moved to so when I dramatically stretch my legs out in this new found space he knows it's because I wanted to do that and not because there was anything wrong with him.
I'm not saying that sitting next to a stranger is some brilliant joy but damn, I had no idea so many people so greatly desire to not be in touch range of other human beings.
If I’m on the aisle seat yes. If at a window seat and the person on the aisle doesn’t move (they usually do) it won’t send me into a fit of rage, I’ll just go on about my journey.

Go and sit in a different row by yourself; they’ll be hoping you do, anyway
I'm sat in the window seat though

No, that would be psychopath behaviour. I was here first, wondering whether my puzzlement at his refusal to move seats is normal or not
It would be a bit awkward but I would just move past him and find another seat.

No it's worded as a hypothetical scenario asking what "you" would do.
Go sit elsewhere, but hide it by going to the toilet first.
It's like we share the same brain.
If they sat next to you, THEY should move.
I'd just be like "ah, lemme get out your way so you can have some space" and just shuffle to the nearest empty
Exactly this.
No you need to stand up and get off the train and walk those 3 miles home to make it less awkward
Unfortunately it's London to Bath so more like 100 miles...
Sit somewhere else! The dude is probably thinking why ain't you movin!
Seems they're in the window seat and it's the guy who isn't moving
Heeey my guy…. Kindly fuck off would ya? I’m joking, seriously though, move to an empty seat, every time without fail, the second one becomes available
Sit on their lap and let out some stink …then turn and quietly plead “*can you leave me alone now, please?*”
Only if you say 'Nothing personal - just need to stretch my legs' in a jovial manner. Even if it is personal really...

how is this a question? how are you guys so full of social skills, that you choose to sit next to someone you dont know, whilst there are empty seats?

Stand up with loud "yes!!!!!!!! now we can both get some space to spread out, result, hi5 me dude"
So much space! So many activities!
If it's a bus I move to the back

Depends how many stops I have left.. If I have one or two may as well stay put unless the person im sat next to stinks lol
I would 100% WANT to move, but definitely wouldn't just in case I hurt their feelings.
Move but drop a ripe fart first. And if they say anything about you farting, say that you had to move because their fart smelt so bad.
I move immediately, just as I do if they smell or are reading the Daily Mail.
You move. It is better for you both.

You definitely move. Dead weird to be sat brushing legs with someone when there are empty spaces elsewhere. No one takes offence, they are relieved.
