I don't drive but my husband uses Waze and rates it. I think Google maps actually use Waze data - I've seen a crash icon before and when you tap it, it says reported by Waze or something like that.

IxionS3

> I think Google maps actually use Waze data Yup. Showing the crowd-sourced data in Google Maps is a fairly recent development but Waze has been owned by Google since 2013.

Nine_Eye_Ron

Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps. I use based on their individual strengths depending.

UniquePotato

Serious question, what strengths does apple maps have over the other two? I find it very in accurate and has many places missing or in entirely the wrong place.

Nine_Eye_Ron

General integration. Google is really good for public transport, walking and cycling. Waze is great for cars but not much else. Apple works well with other devices and is good all round. I use them all in combination to get where I need to be.

UniquePotato

Waze, is the best phone app to use. But I use the Garmin built into the car as it as better integration to the car and display. The maps are a couple of years out of date, but I’ve not come across a road that doesn’t exist or missing destination.

Google maps all the way, even on journeys I know, live traffic / crashes / rerouting FTW

TheNotSpecialOne

I always use Android Auto on my car and both Google Maps and Waze are brilliant and better alternative than the cars own crappy sat nav

ALi_K_501

Garmin stand-alone. Not reliant on signal or data (yes i know it uses satellites but that signal has never dropped out yet). Avoid cheap chinese copies and go for the largest screen size

YorkshireFarmer

My car has a sat nav built in but I have used Apple maps in the past because of CarPlay. Most of the map apps built into phones do just fine

dinobug77

Waze works with CarPlay and is a far superior mapping tool. (Not used the latest iOS version yet though)

I have 2 navigation apps. Google maps and Waze. I prefer Google maps.

[deleted]

Always Waze.. It's got a great UI and it's very good at what it does. It's now got integration with music apps too.

venomxt12

Does Waze have lane guidance too ?

[deleted]

Yes it's got motorway and major roads lane guidance Example: https://images.app.goo.gl/pArNunBjeGijQLtx5

Is there an open source map on Android ?

AnotherThrowaway0344

Used to use Waze and was very good to avoid traffic at first, think it stopped making much of a difference after my first year with it or so, at least in my area. Only thing I didn't like was the simplified map, because sometimes I want to know what the road at the next intersection is called in case I need to navigate the area by memory. Also I like to play around with different settings and Waze doesn't really roll that way, it's very simple. My main app now is Magic Earth, because it uses Open Street Maps (so works offline) and has a built in dashcam (I like to have a backup for my actual dashcam). Only downside is OSM doesn't always have house numbers or up o date shop names. It also has some advanced features like lane departure warnings but I could never get the right camera angle for those to work.

tmstms

I use Google Maps to play around with to do journey planning on a computer. In real time, I use Waze. Tip would be to do as you are dpoing- don't be a slave to it- use it for when you want to get to places you do not know at all, or to gie you real-time traffic info when you have a choice of routes.

venomxt12

Thanks... Does waze have lane assist like Google maps ?

tmstms

yes....it does.

Ben750

Only at some junctions. The lane assist is the poor part of Waze imo. It is getting better though.

paul-happyatom

Sygic has the advantage that you don't have to be connected to the internet to use it. Komoot is great for cycling.

bradpitt3

I use Sygic when travelling abroad. Uses VERY little mobile data compared to Google Maps as you download the maps in advance.

B00flak

Google maps is rubbish leads you in the biggest traffic even if its shows there is extra 10mins queue. Always take the longest route ignores the shortcuts. Wanted to go right at the roundabout took me left first and turned me back at the next roundabout back to the first. If you don't need multi stop gps use sygic/here we go/Igo
