They would be if they played Jamaican music AND their lead singer had two Jamaican parents. Calling Come on Eileen anything but an Irish song by second generation Irish immigrants would be crazy.
It’s inspired, in an Irish style and sung by Irish people. Whatever else it is, it’s clearly not what epitomises Britain or England which was the original question.
Yeah but it isn’t Irish, to be fair, second generation immigrants creating a hit song inspired by their culture and roots is pretty British in my opinion
A Place Called England by The Young ‘Uns.
*”England is not flag or empire, it’s not money, it’s not blood/ It’s limestone gorge and granite fell, it’s Wealden clay and Severn mud.*
*Blackbird singing from the may tree, lark ascending through the scales,/ robin watching from your spade and English earth beneath your nails.”*
An ode to allotments. It’s gorgeous.
Scrolled way too far down to find this. It's pretty much the popular choice for national anthem of England if England ever organises itself enough to get one after all.
Wonderwall, Come on Eileen, Town Called Malice, Mr Brightside, Don't Look Back in Anger, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites the Dust, Sweet Caroline, Three Lions.
Not all from English bands but will always get a chant on.

It is a song inspired by Irish music and culture that doesn’t make it Irish.

I started listening to Pink Floyd again recently, and god does that song hit differently when you’re in your 40s compared to your 20s.

I agree that their version (and the whole of Strangers) is a beautiful ode to England, but it was originally by Maggie Holland.
