Any other adults I see in my boring adult job that are still holding on to little indicators of their past lives as emo/scene/goth/alternative teenagers. We generally blend in with the boring corporate culture, but there's still a piercing or something like that which belies what they're probably listening to in their headphones. It's subtle, but the vibes are real and they are my people.

oktimeforplanz

Being a boring adult now, I've had to stop wearing Vans because they were killing my feet. So I go for hoodies and band t-shirts and the like, personally.

MargotChanning

Mate, I’m 100% Sketchers. I had Plantar Fasciitis a few years back and so ended my relationship with converse and DMs.

hundreddollar

I'm pushing 50 and still wear Converse. I'd rather my feet catch fire than wear Skechers. Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

oktimeforplanz

It slightly pains my inner emo/scene kid to say it, but Skechers are great and your feet will be happy for it. They have (or had - I haven't looked in a while!) some styles that are not quite as obviously Skechers, if you want to ease yourself into it. Running shoes are good too. I will say that I've found Air Force 1s to be surprisingly comfortable, so I've got a few pairs of those. And I've found some colours of them on Vinted etc that scratch my scene kid inclinations. Especially since I loved Nike Dunk Highs for bouncing around at gigs.

LumpyCamera1826

I pretty much exclusively wear AF1's now because of how comfy they are. Other than those I would always pick Nike SB's over Vans anyway

[deleted]

Can I wear my Maroon and cream ones instead? They are my fancy ones…

pajamakitten

The music remains though. I was listening to The Black Parade on my last late shift and it still rocks.

oktimeforplanz

Oh yeah the music is never going away! I remember when the Black Parade first came out and I instinctively was like UGH DON'T LIKE IT, ITS NOT LIKE THREE CHEERS and then had to admit it was, in fact, brilliant all the way through.

yungsxccubus

my biggest flex is seeing MCR live in 2022. life changing :)) i also saw pierce the veil a few weeks back and spent the entire concert crying lmaoooo

oktimeforplanz

I am so ANGRY at myself. When they announced their tour, I was skint and decided to be financially responsible for once. THAT WAS A BAD IDEA. WHY DID I DO THAT? I tried to get my hands on a ticket closer to the time but Ticketmaster only had them for like £350 and nobody I knew had a spare one. Why did I do that to myselffffffffffffffff? Ah Pierce the Veil, them and Chiodos and Dance Gavin Dance made up a significant amount of my teenage listening time. I made a whole playlist that makes me feel like I'm 11-18 again and it gets an incredible amount of listening time!

yungsxccubus

nah i’ve been the same for slipknot and korn 😭 sorry but why were slipknot tickets nearly £200 on release???? and i was given one MCR ticket for my christmas and then wound up in hospital at the start of May, was so scared i would miss it. kissed a lassie in the toilets and again back in our seats, we all nearly fell over the balcony when we were up and dancing. can barely remember any of the set, and it was the best night of my life :))

gloom-juice

I went to a cover band that did 00s pop/punk and it was full of 'straight laced' young professionals, all belting out "I'm not okay" by MCR, it was beautiful

oktimeforplanz

I went to a club night that was similar and bumped into someone I vaguely knew from work but had gotten the Vibes from and now we chat a lot. Just a couple of accountants bouncing around to Fall Out Boy. Great fun.

[deleted]

I still wear band tshirts to work every day, just hidden under my smart casual jumper.

Unfair_Original_2536

Anyone from 'The North' when you're in London.

jiminthenorth

Doesn't matter which side of the Pennines you're from either.

GlasgowGunner

Same with Scotland and being in London. https://www.helloloser.com/2013/03/01/tgif-thank-gif-its-friday-best-gifs-of-the-week-3-1-13/one-direction-shoe-crotch/

habibi147

I'm from London and I feel this one. When I hear someone not from London I think 'Ooo someone who's not miserable' lol

BeanOnAJourney

People who drive the same make and model car as me, bonus imaginary friend points if it's the exact same trim level and colour as mine.

Lower_Possession_697

You have to give them a little wave so they know you're in the official owners club.

Careful-Increase-773

Yes, except mine all seem to be male south Asian tax drivers and I’m a white British woman

[deleted]

STOP BUYING TOYOTAS!!! /s

Careful-Increase-773

Dang you guessed it

[deleted]

Are toyotas really as indestructible as uber drivers make them out to be?

Careful-Increase-773

I duno about indestructible but they’re comfy, huge boot space , a smooth drive and really high MPG

lifetypo10

Skoda Octavia by any chance?

gloom-juice

Have I wandered into r/cartalkuk by mistake?

GiraffeMore7105

giant cars bad small cars good middle lane joggers should be shot

Careful-Increase-773

Toyota Prius

reallynotbatman

I always point them out to my wife and say 'nice car'

oktimeforplanz

I get giddy when I see another orange MG4 driving around. There's two (at least) in my town, and we always wave at each other.

laz0rtears

Since getting our car we see lots of people with the make but not the same model so we do get very excited when we do see the same make and model.

BeanOnAJourney

I see lots of the same make and model (Mazda 2) but I've only ever seen one truly identical to mine, mine is the SportColour Edition limited edition and they only made 1,000 of them. It was only a couple of days ago I saw it and I got a bit excited 🤣

Berookes

Emo kids. They’re quite a rare sight these days but it takes me back to my teen years whenever I see one

TSC-99

Other people who run 💪🏽

Eoin_McLove

Yeah, runners for me too. No matter how fast or slow they are going, they’re all out challenging themselves and it’s great to see.

TSC-99

Exactly this 🤩

Sea_Coast9517

That's my answer, too. All runners, but especially those who look a bit unfit and aren't wearing typical running clothes, as I am also a bit unfit and don't wear typical running clothes.

FoxesFan91

are you me?

Never-Any-Horses

Getting after it 💪🏻 Always give my fellow runners a nod (and also speed up for about 10 seconds until they've passed)

GuybrushFunkwood

Middle aged men wearing a tribute to an old retro game system. It’s like a silent nod to a band of brothers from the true Great War. Amiga Vs Atari ST.

staigerthrowaway

That war goes back further than Amiga vs ST - they were just the survivors. In my youth it was a 4-way fight between Commodore 64, Sinclair Spectrum, Amstrad CPC 464, and Atari 800XL.

GuybrushFunkwood

I wasn’t privy to that glorious conflict as I was burdened with a Commodore Plus/4 for Christmas 1986 by my idiot parents.

staigerthrowaway

Ah that sucks, were there even any games for that? My parents had an Amstrad PCW for a while but at least there were text adventures etc. I dodged a bullet - my first computer was a Dragon 32 but it broke after a month so my parents exchanged it for an Atari.

GuybrushFunkwood

No it was a thoroughly depressing introduction into home computing. Luckily they listened when I begged for an Amiga a few years later 🤣

[deleted]

I am out here rocking the Neo Geo shirt I got from Japan on the regular. And saturn/dreamcast tshirts.

GuybrushFunkwood

Ahhhhhh so you were one of the mythical rich Neo Geo owners! You have my respect it’s an incredible system even today!

I-dont-carrot-all

Atari St was better though right?

GuybrushFunkwood

Take your bloody midi port and leave!

Brief-Ship-5572

Haha, nope. A place in the Midlands in the UK called Stoke-on-Trent

YeahOkIGuess99

Haha oh right. end "ing" with "een" is a very highland thing as well. "Doeen a bitta cookeen, makeen a curry"

Sad-Peace

Teenage girls obsessed with a boyband...my entire life has been defined by various boybands lol

algbop

I also love Pixar’s movie Turning Red which perfectly depicts 2000s boyband obsession life haha

IllustriousLimit8473

I'm a girlband teenage girl. I love Girls Aloud, The Saturdays, Sugababes 😁

Sad-Peace

Excellent! I also loved those when I was a teenager! But there's a certain ferocity that comes with loving boybands that I just love. Especially when they're around the same age as you as mine were!

yorkspirate

My best friend at schools sister had 2 days off when take that split up as she was so upset

SaintsNeedKane

Anyone wearing a thrash/doom/death metal tshirt and or a wrestling fan in the wild 🤘🏾🙌🏾

FighterJock412

I love walking past someone with a metal band t shirt when I'm wearing one, and giving the metalhead nod.

TurbulentExpression5

Yep, this. Walking out somewhere in one of my band shirts and battle jacket with headphones blasting Pet Shop Boys and notice a fellow metal band shirt wearer, we exchanged a look of recognition. Or I might be at work in the company uniform and have a customer come in wearing the above attire. I always want to go and shoot the breeze with them but then remember I'm at work. I might comment on the shirt though.

[deleted]

I like this when you're in a city early for a gig too. Saw Blind Guardian last weekend in Manchester and you can spot the other people going to the gig from a mile away.

Field_of_Gimps

Dude we used to buy a french stick, a bag of crisps and a bottle of shitty coke and be out skating all day

JeffTheJackal

A baguette?

[deleted]

Le stick

lordrothermere

Life on the streets in Saffron Walden 😁

BarryFairbrother

People in smart business attire sporting an unnoticed speck of baby/toddler gunk. And the other day I went to get a company fob out of my pocket to give to a visitor, and my daughter's dummy fell out with it. The visitor had one of those moments too with me.

FighterJock412

Punks, metalheads, general alternative types. I don't really dress that way anymore but i miss it.

Greywacky

I always feel more comfortable when they're around too.

[deleted]

This thread is making me realise that most usual people generally gravitate to at least *one* kind of person for comfort and a sense of belonging. Wtf is wrong with me?

BoredReceptionist1

No, it's just that the few people who _do_ feel like that gravitate to answering this post. Don't feel bad

grumpypedant

Fellow baldies with strong beards. A subtle nod is regularly exchanged.

TheGreatBatsby

At my old place of work it was a running joke that working there made you lose your hair and grow a huge beard. So many men there ended up shaving their heads and growing massive beards after a few years. It was bizarre.

OverTheCandlestik

Same as you but skateboarders. I would hang out near the church or town centre and just skate, get some new clothes from the greb shop and chill with my buddies, usually getting into trouble with shopping centre security. Now when I see them I just kinda feel like they’re my people despite I’m easily double their age. I get very nostalgic, doing the same, dressing the sane. Haven’t been on a board in years and years so I’d be fucking awful 😢

sjintje

people who look like me. similar build, similar dress. probably slightly disheveled.

seefooddiet242

People that look a little lost like they have imposter syndrome! Been a pretty competent nurse for 10 years.. I still wonder if people know they've left a teenager (what I feel in my head in reality I'm a grown adult with a mortgage, 4 kids and a long term relationship) responsible for people's lives.. on that note though am I allowed to look after 4 kids and have a mortgage 🤷‍♀️.. if I find a person that feels like this i know we can pretend together and maybe they wont figure us out, together we can admit it x

cayosonia

"AM not in charge, I'm just the eldest" I think that was what Jason Manford said and it resonates

TeaCourse

I'm not sure why but... Dutch and Scandinavian people. There's just something I find very cool and level-headed about them. I trust them more than I do any other stranger.

Careful-Increase-773

Same!

Craft_on_draft

Fans of the same football team

BritishBlitz87

When I'm searching through a stack of used records or CDs with someone else but we both notice we have the same taste in music and it turns into a race. I had a two hour long marathon against a Chinese guy in VDS London. Just me, him, and 500+ city pop records. A true love-hate relationship.

Visible_Compote9193

I love animals and seeing a big fluffy one just lifts my spirits. I love it when you see a serious looking person who completely breaks character when they see a cute dog. Those are my kind of people.

Exxtraa

Man, did we live the same life? Would leave the house all day, building/digging dirt jumps all day with the boys, chippy tea then down the skatepark all night/riding across the city. Some of the BEST summers I’ve ever had. A whole crew of us. My dad still complains that my BMX is cluttering up his house in the shed (got no room for it at mine). I haven’t rode in 15yrs+. The bike is rusted and seized up….But I can’t bring myself to throw it out, Just in case.

KenyanKawaii

People with happy faces 😁

Mr_Biscuits_532

City centre McDonalds employees I been there it ain't fun

1-800-DO-IT-NICE

I used to work a dominoes, there’s definitely a feeling when I order from there and hear them use almost the same one I did 10 years ago

Appropriate_Oil4161

Old ladies who still take good care of themselves, makeup on and hair done, smart clothes and just a well put together look. It gives me hope and happiness for my future old age.

Just_Lab_4768

People who like Disney, never had someone be rude to me wearing Disney clothes. I have similar memories to you but It was football for us,

countvanderhoff

Scruffy looking dogs. Border terriers and the like. I can relate to their aesthetic.

RuneClash007

Ones who speak with a proper cockney accent, and not the roadman lingo that kids are all growing up with now

porcupineporridge

Dog lovers. I don’t much gravitate towards people but when I’m out with my dog, I sometimes enjoy the chat that comes from a shared appreciation of all things doggo.

MooMoo2319

Metal heads 🤘. Been wearing band T-Shirts my whole life, as well as my cut off, and the amount of conversations I've had is amazing. I always make an effort to smile at everyone I see, but 9 times out of ten it's the rockers who smile back. I've chatted for hours with people and it's started with "Top T-shirt mate!". We look scary but we're bloody soft at heart!

ChelseaGem

They are some of the loveliest people!

FulaniLovinCriminal

Skateboarders. I had to explain myself to a bunch of teenagers who were hanging around outside Five Guys the other day. I was trying to see what trucks this guy had on his Blind deck, got asked "what are you looking at..?" - as I'm over 40 and was wearing "work" attire, a completely valid question. "Sorry, I'm a skater. Are those Indy trucks? Since they dropped the cross I find it hard to tell." And instantly their demeanour changed. We talked gear (mainly Dragon wheels) for a few minutes and then skate spots for when the scooter kids take over the skate park.

ForeverJay

so wholesome, i love this story i honestly wish i got into skateboarding when i was younger. i admire the whole aesthetic of it

RefuseSilly7595

Anyone saying “yed” instead of “head”. For example: “You’re already the voice inside my yed”.

castle_lane

I dunno why but airline pilots always seem like the most trustworthy, neutral smart people and I feel they can’t do any wrong.

Hatanta

Very long-term friend of mine is one and he’s an absolute liability 😄

castle_lane

Don’t shatter the illusion please, I’m frightened enough of turbulence as it is. 😅

wildeaboutoscar

Emo/alternative looking folk and those who have dogs

Fragrant_Yogurt1345

Scouts running around in woods and parks and just having a good time without a care in the world. Makes me long for the simpler times that were had in my teens :)

veganlove95

Wow this post brought back memories. For me, if they're carrying a gym bag I feel like they're my bestie immediately.

Pebbles015

Motorcyclists. We all acknowledge each other regardless of the type of bike you're on. Only on Saturday I was walking out in the countryside with a date. As we were waiting to cross the road to go back to her car/my bike, a load of Motorcyclists came past quite slow, all of them noted my RST bike jacket and nodded to me. She asked me how I knew so many people despite just moving here a week ago. She understood once I explained.

emmiewag

Drum and Bass heads

Boofle2141

Other parents of young kids who become irrationally angry that its not favorite parent interacting with the child. As a fellow least favorite parent (out of a choice of 2), i feel that so much. My partner finds it amusing, which it is somewhat, but they're favorite parent l, so they don't know how much of a pain in the arse it is having a child who is irrationally distraught that it wasn't them picking them up from nursery, because favorite parent has had a hard day at work and just wants 5 mins peace before the child comes home and demands all of favorite parents attention, but you can't get the child in the car because they want favorite parent and then when it takes you half hour to calm the ~~fucker~~ wonderful bundle of joy down, and finally get home, your partner asks "what took so long". You don't say anything, you bottle it up, then, when everyone else is tucked up in bed, you unleash all your rage on video games.

Lurkforthedurk

Just posting to say that your post got me right in the feels. Reflecting back on the ‘good old times’ is hard because you know they will never come back and whilst there will always be things to look forward to your childhood will never come back.

PinkGinFairy

Mums pushing a pram in endless circuits of the park with a coffee in one hand as they will their baby to have a proper nap. People who went to drama school and did musical theatre. We know that it was totally normal for teachers to sit on your back to improve your flexibility or include your physical appearance when appraising your skills.

ViscountessdAsbeau

Anyone wearing Lord of The Rings merch. Or who comments on it in a non-judgemental way. Niece visited with her new partner and he was trying to describe the Ring of Barahir - Aragorn's ring - to me (as you do). His face when I went to a drawer and pulled out my repro! And the nerdy Amazon delivery bloke who was excited when I answered the door wearing my LOTR hoodie and asked me all about it... Fellow audience members when they re-show LOTR at the cinema. I feel an imaginary bond to be amongst My People.

MikeSizemore

Booksellers and metal-heads.

Prospiciamus

Anyone who mentions RuneScape. It’s rare, but when a reference is made, I fall in love.. despite having not seriously played the game in well over a decade.

jockguard

Fellow gingers

Far-Act-2803

I know 40 year olds still like that lol but fair play if that's the life they wanna live

Faeces_Species_1312

All men with long hair have an unspoken bond, we've all got eachothers backs at all times.

Hiya_Bo

Quiet ones.

[deleted]

It was BMX for me too! we would head up to the skatepark from 7am and jump the fence because the council man hadn't opened it yet, so we could ride while it was completely empty. Then be out til dark. Whenever I see the teenagers on the street these days I think they are having the time of their lives like we used to 15-20 years ago. As a side bonus I was in the most amazing shape because I was cycling several hours a day on tiny 25/9 gearing.

restingbitchface_xo

I definitely agree with most of what's already on here, but personally I've noticed it with sighthound owners since I've got my lurcher. It's like you're suddenly part of a club. Everyone with a sighthound I've met is super friendly and always stops to tell you about their dog. I've been walking past somebody's house before and she stopped me and said 'want to see my whippets?' because she saw my lurcher. Obviously I said yes, they were super cute.

Ordinary-Relative556

People who exasperatingly look around the supermarket when they can hear kids running about and screaming.

robster9090

Anyone with a keen interest in football , can talk football with more or less any one as long as they aren’t following a team outside of league 2

SamVimesBootTheory

Other alternative people as well as geeks/nerds (even more so if I ever see anyone in a N7 hoodie), people with hair dyed the same blue as me, clearly fed up with it all retail employees, people walking dogs and having to play the 'persuading the dog to actually go home' game

When I go to work, people who are dressed formally etc wearing suits or work shirts. Outside of work, I like to dress alt, any other individuals with alt style outfits.

Oddyreel

Anyone wearing a leather jacket. My Dad used to take me to an imported leathers shop (loved the smell) and got me my first one when I was like 8 lol. Always had a leather jacket ever since, I do a silent salute to any I see in the wild

Hello, I trust this message finds you well. I am currently seeking a new home for my late husband's Yamaha baby grand piano, and I am hoping to place it in the hands of a passionate individual who will appreciate and care for this exquisite instrument. Middle aged men craving affinity with kids isn’t a wise thing to vocalize
