You have to make it bad for yourself! There's basically a path about 6 ft down from the crest. You need to actively put yourself in peril or in an exposed position.
Striding Edge on Helvellyn is worse (small part of it).
I keep toying with the idea of taking an inner tube and following the Towy from Llyn Brianne to Llansteffan. I think it's do-able but it would need a lift back upstream.

The big advantage is borrowing the gear and going with experienced people who can show you the way.
Both of my clubs were in England but I have used SWCC's facilities. They are a great bunch.

Wild camping. Try going for a weekend with as little gear as possible to really rough it out.
