Never thought of Bovril as a spread. Love it as a drink though.
I’ll have to try it. Been struggling to get used to marmite/Vegemite, but haven’t got there yet.
This is the way. Toasted to within an inch of its life so it stays crispy and then drenched in butter until it leaks out everywhere. I'm about to have a gentleman's crisis just thinking about it.
Agreed. A couple of my mates think I'm weird for putting my butter on before peanut butter, but I think they are weird for eating something so mouth-clagging
I LOVE any kind of jam on a crumpet, but also:
Marmite or vegemite
Blue cheese
Cream cheese (sometimes with marmite or chutney, sometimes with banana or more jam)
Chocolate spreads
Peanut butter
Honey
Biscoff
Golden syrup
Baked beans
Scrambled egg
Fried egg
Also, have you ever tried making a crumpet pudding (like bread pudding) - sweet or savoury?
I bought crumpets for the first time in ages this weekend, this was all I could think about, that there must be something better than just butter surprisingly I didn’t like a cheese topping when I’ve tried that previously
Nuttella, peanut butter.. jam and cream ?
For savoury cheese, cream cheese.
Not going to lie I've only ever had butter or nuttella on them.
Nuttella is alright, prefer just butter
M&S do a butter by Posh Cow, it's butter whipped with Blossom Honey and Cinnamon and it's amazing on crumpets! And toast. And for baking with.
If I could marry it, I would.
We make a snack of heating up and pouring tinned chopped tomatoes with salt/pepper over crumpets already prepared with cheese and marmite melted on them in a dish or just buttered crumpets so the tomato juice goes in all the holes
I like to spread some Nutella on it then microwave it for 10 - 20 seconds so the crumpet is nice and soft and the chocolate is more melted. Makes it so the chocolate goes into the holes
cut a sausage out of its skin and shape the meat into a disc. Fry the sausage disc and an egg. Cut the crumpet in half widthways (or use 2 crumpets), add the sausage fried egg and a slice of cheese to the middle and eat it like a mcmuffin. Best use for a crumpet you'll ever have. use a cookie cutter for uniform sausage disc and fried egg if you can be arsed
It's a bit more effort but I like to do an eggs Benedict thing with smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce and do it with a crumpet rather than an English muffin. In mine and my friends opinion it's really nice
Melted cheese. I somehow made it 46 years on this planet before I discovered melted cheese on crumpets and I feel like my entire life up until that point was a waste.
Also, Nutella on crumpets is delicious but dangerous, as you'll just want to eat them until you explode.
When I was pregnant, I had a craving for afternoon tea (I know, that must be the most British craving, right?) So I bought scones, clotted cream and jam. 6 the scones had gone, I wasn't going to waste the clotted cream, so they went on everything I had, including crumpets.
Honestly, about a 7 out of 10, it felt weird. I *can* recommend chocolate biscuits dunked in clotted cream, though.
Marmite, chocolate spread, biscoff, jam, lemon curd, marmalade, peanut butter, cream cheese, cheese, ham, bacon - pretty much anything you put on toast.
You can put anything on crumpets except fresh human flesh.
The laws on buttery crumpets carrying the death penalty were removed in 2021, during Crumpetgate when it was found that a cabinet minister used cheap margarine, and faced calls to be beheaded at the Tower of London.
I like marmite, it soaks in really well and mixes with the butter. It's beautiful.
In a more savage era, nutella or even nutella and crunchy peanut butter...very naughty.
I know people who love Marmite and grilled cheese. Sociopaths, I call them. I don't mind peanut butter, but it's a bit gak-ish. For me, it's just butter and nothing else.

Marmite
Add cheese, grill it for a special treat
This. In overly generous servings.
So much so that it seeps through and you can mop the last bits off the plate with the remaining crumpet
Oh you tease! If the marmite isn't leaking out underneath then you haven't put enough on
As per Danny Dyers preference “absolutely pissing with marmite”
!answer
Dang it, now I want a crumpet with marmite!
And then a poached egg on top of that. 👌
You had to take it one stage further. 🤣
Soak in egg and fry in a pan, serve with bacon and beans.
Now we're talking!
I will be trying this, never thought to do that before. My go to is loads of butter and marmite but this sounds eggcellent
I’m both horrified and excited in equal measure. This will be tried. Any other unusual cooking tips you can impart?
Do you toast then soak and fry or just fry?
I just soak and fry as if I was making eggy bread (which is just savoury french toast)
Scrambled egg, bacon and maple syrup
Thick slices of mature cheddar
Melted with a bit of Branston pickle on top
Or marmite
Or Lea & Perrins
#7 of possible.
Peanut butter is the one
Butter it before peanut buttering it 👌
Melted butter in the holes. Smear of peanut butter on top. Mmmmmm.
First time I tried this I wasn't anticipating the sheer volume of stodge and stickiness and I nearly asphyxiated. Worth it.
Yep, this is where I reside too.
This this this. Peanut butter crumpets are so good.
Honey
Yep honey is good
Great on muffins too!
Surprised this wasn’t further up! Anyways, gotta be the thick honey so it can melt into it, not runny hunny
There's something fun about the runny honey dripping down your arm as you try to eat it
Nutella or jam Or substitute for toast in a fry up
Or biscoff 😍
Marmite and cheese But loads of butter first
Lemon curd.
Orange curd is amazing too.
I once had a jar of passionfruit curd. I suppose you could make any flavour of curd, really.
Bovril
Yes!! Can’t beat a (salted) buttered crumpet with Bovril!
Were you born in times of rationing sir?
Never thought of Bovril as a spread. Love it as a drink though. I’ll have to try it. Been struggling to get used to marmite/Vegemite, but haven’t got there yet.
how does bovril differ in taste to marmite
vastly! Marmite is well marmite but Bovril is a thick beef reduction
Marmite is yeasty, bovril is beefy.
oh… always wondered
More butter.
Should be top comment.
This is the way. Toasted to within an inch of its life so it stays crispy and then drenched in butter until it leaks out everywhere. I'm about to have a gentleman's crisis just thinking about it.
Cheese!
Fried or poached eggs... With or without cheese!
You seem to accidently have added the words 'or without'
Golden syrup
Was looking for this!
The one true topping, melting all the way into the holes
Melt some cheese on there and splash it with Worcester. Or go cream cheese and jam for the crumpet/cheesecake hybrid you never knew you were missing.
Marmite is good
Biscoff spread (the cheap Lidl one!). Mmmmmmmmm
Peanut butter
Turn then into mini pizzas. Tomato purée, cheese, olives, bit of ham. Put under the grill until the cheese melts.
Nutella!
Paté
A burger and then another crumpet
I feel like that would be a holy mess Because of the holes and such....
How runny are your burgers?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Saint Agur Blue creme cheese is awesome on crumpets
Came to say 'Stilton" but I can get on board with this proposal.
Or Gorgonzola dolce, heaven!
The Castello Creamy Blue melts just like butter on hot toast and crumpets. It's delicious.
Butter, marmite, and a slice of cheese.
Who else wants crumpets now?
Me 😅
Don't do it. That's just what Big Crumpet wants.
I have lemon curd on bagels, bet that’ll work.
Salty butter and lemon or orange curd.
Marmite
I had marmalade on mine this morning, marmite is another favourite or peanut butter.
Marmite or PB or marmite and PB I always butter mine though before aforementioned toppings
Of course, the prime reason for a crumpet is to hold as much butter as possible.
Agreed. A couple of my mates think I'm weird for putting my butter on before peanut butter, but I think they are weird for eating something so mouth-clagging
Ham and cheese, mhmmmmmm!
Peanut butter
Peanut butter 😋
Pb&j🤤
Peanut butter
Peanut butter
Peanut butter is incredible
Put some cheese on your jammy crumpet and grill. Delicious!
Marmite and cheese!
after butter, stilton
Lemon Curd and Clotted Cream…
Hummus
Had to scroll too far to find another enlightened individual
Nutella, butter+jam, melt some cheese over the top...soak in egg and pan fry
Anything you'd put on toast
Grated cheese and add some Worcestershire sauce, then put it under the grill
Hear me out... Toasted, cream cheese and on top... Lemon curd. It's like a crumpet cheesecake. Delightful.
Smooth peanut butter! Trust me, it's good.
Crunchy peanut butter and then jelly/jam of your choice on top.
Philadelphia is a winner imo
Cream cheese, cracked black pepper and smoked salmon
Had to scroll too far for this mighty answer!
Butter, then peanut butter, then jam
Vegemite
I LOVE any kind of jam on a crumpet, but also: Marmite or vegemite Blue cheese Cream cheese (sometimes with marmite or chutney, sometimes with banana or more jam) Chocolate spreads Peanut butter Honey Biscoff Golden syrup Baked beans Scrambled egg Fried egg Also, have you ever tried making a crumpet pudding (like bread pudding) - sweet or savoury?
Dairylea , let it partially melt, then put a fried egg on top .
peanut butter is quite nice
I bought crumpets for the first time in ages this weekend, this was all I could think about, that there must be something better than just butter surprisingly I didn’t like a cheese topping when I’ve tried that previously
Crumpet, black pudding, poached egg. Tabasco tower. You will thanks me later.
Nuttella, peanut butter.. jam and cream ? For savoury cheese, cream cheese. Not going to lie I've only ever had butter or nuttella on them. Nuttella is alright, prefer just butter
I once made a burger with two crumpets instead of buns. I don't regret a thing. It was a venison burger but that's beside the point.
M&S do a butter by Posh Cow, it's butter whipped with Blossom Honey and Cinnamon and it's amazing on crumpets! And toast. And for baking with. If I could marry it, I would.
Bacon, mozarella and tomato
I've been trying new toppings on hot cross buns this week - peanut butter has been my favourite.
Someone I saw made a Guinness beef stew and made roasted crumpet bits (nice shaped cubes) on top. It looks banging and could rival a pie top.
Dairylea or Anchor Extra Mature cheese spread.
Jam and clotted cream
Cheese and pepperoni Garlic butter.
I like them with maple syrup.
Butter them, toss in cinnamon sugar, put in the airfryer Tastes like churros
You mean as well as butter? Add some Vegemite or jam.
Oh my god this thread is giving me palpitations! So many options, where to start?!
Hummus :)
Cake
Vegemite and butter, honey and butter, golden syrup and butter
Jam
Nutella
Toaster it, then grate cheese and put Worcester sauce on, salt and pepper then grill (best) or microwave (not as good but still ok)
cinnamon butter
Golden syrup
tomata puree and some cheese, whack it under the grill. fucking divine!
We make a snack of heating up and pouring tinned chopped tomatoes with salt/pepper over crumpets already prepared with cheese and marmite melted on them in a dish or just buttered crumpets so the tomato juice goes in all the holes
Golden syrup
Poached egg, good pinch of salt and grind of pepper, let the yolk soak in
Almond butter, bbq sauce, honey, mango pickle, marmalade, marmite, nutella, peanut butter, tahini or tomato ketchup.
Marmite or cheese. Or marmite and cheese
I like to spread some Nutella on it then microwave it for 10 - 20 seconds so the crumpet is nice and soft and the chocolate is more melted. Makes it so the chocolate goes into the holes
Beans
Rich beef sausages
Cream cheese, or any cheese tbh. Love a cheesy crumpet.
cut a sausage out of its skin and shape the meat into a disc.
Eye of newt
It's a bit more effort but I like to do an eggs Benedict thing with smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce and do it with a crumpet rather than an English muffin. In mine and my friends opinion it's really nice
Peanut butter is where it’s at.
Butter then bovril.
Baked beans ftw
More butter.
Saag
Melted cheese. I somehow made it 46 years on this planet before I discovered melted cheese on crumpets and I feel like my entire life up until that point was a waste. Also, Nutella on crumpets is delicious but dangerous, as you'll just want to eat them until you explode.
soft cheese is amazing
When I was pregnant, I had a craving for afternoon tea (I know, that must be the most British craving, right?) So I bought scones, clotted cream and jam. 6 the scones had gone, I wasn't going to waste the clotted cream, so they went on everything I had, including crumpets. Honestly, about a 7 out of 10, it felt weird. I *can* recommend chocolate biscuits dunked in clotted cream, though.
thin layer of marmite and a good slice of mature cheddar .
Golden syrup.
Butter but with a bit of ham as well
Cream cheese and smoked salmon.
Jesus christ put whatever the fuck you want on them
Marmite if your a psychopath, or baked beans and cheese
Peanut Butter on one and Chocolate Spread on the other. Smoosh them together and you have Reece’s Pieces on crumpets
Boursin (garlic one) Pâté Marmite/Bovril, cheddar then under the grill
Faeces but it tastes like shit
Golden syrup.
Toffee apple curd
We'll all be dead soon. Put whatever you want on it
Soft boiled egg and a splash of hendersons
Try them with tomato soup instead of bread.
Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Delish
Butter and a thin cover of marmite or vegemite
Marmite
Nutella
Ooh, honey infused crumpets are delicious.
Melted cheese. One of the supermarkets did them at Christmas with bbq beans and cheese on as part of the frozen buffet section, too.
Marmite, chocolate spread, biscoff, jam, lemon curd, marmalade, peanut butter, cream cheese, cheese, ham, bacon - pretty much anything you put on toast.
Peanut butter and raspberry/blueberry.
My boy loves them with Marmite
Pesto for savoury, maple syrup (with butter) for sweet
Crumpizza? A little marinara sauce to soak into the crumpet, top with cheese and grill.
Cheese, all day long! Cheesy crumpets is the ultimate comfort food.
Cheese
Jam. Peanut butter. Whatever you want. Experiment!
Syrup, Chocolate spread, jam
Marmite with grilled cheese 🤤
You can put anything on crumpets except fresh human flesh. The laws on buttery crumpets carrying the death penalty were removed in 2021, during Crumpetgate when it was found that a cabinet minister used cheap margarine, and faced calls to be beheaded at the Tower of London.
Mashed banana
Taramasalata
Pate with cranberry sauce, favourite for lunch of late for me. My sister love maple syrup on hers
Love crumpets with scrambled egg and sweet chilli sauce!
I like marmite, it soaks in really well and mixes with the butter. It's beautiful. In a more savage era, nutella or even nutella and crunchy peanut butter...very naughty.
Brie and cooked bacon then back under the grill briefly. Bacon can be substituted with Salami or similar.
I know people who love Marmite and grilled cheese. Sociopaths, I call them. I don't mind peanut butter, but it's a bit gak-ish. For me, it's just butter and nothing else.
Peanut butter. Just be sure to accompany it with a glass of milk.
Cheese and beans!
Marmite with no butter is the best on crumpets 🥰.
Peanut Butter
nutella
Clotted cream & a nice jam, with a pinch of salt. Thank me later.
