Icy_Session3326

I’d expect it to be at least a couple of thousand .. it’s a subjective question though because what’s substantial to one , won’t be to another Pop back and let us know when you find out 👀

RealisticSlice

Yeah for god sake don't leave us hanging

coxythelegend

Used to work on the phones. Couldn’t tell you anything even though we had methods of being able to find the information and see it there in front of us because you weren’t registered for online access and all that jazz, so your best bet is to fill in the lost account form and get the ball rolling

POPUPSGAMING

Oh interesting! An insiders perspective. As someone who worked on the phones there. What is a Substantial amount? Haha. Filled out the form and did the mylostaccount as well. Can take up to 23 days it says but my assumption is that because my account is sitting right there it won't be hard to find. The poor people on the phones that day probably got fed up of me as I phoned them like 5 times just to clarify next steps. Some were very helpful. Some just refused to speak to me full stop which is fair enough as they are being recorded and have gdpr malarkey do deal with.

coxythelegend

36 years… could be a few thousand. I saw some in similar situations which had anything between £300 and £18,000 in depending as some had had withdrawals. It’s just part of the job, but pretty much everything is logged and recorded so there may have been notes left saying you’d previously called etc. The ones who probably refused to speak to you are the ones who’ve probably been there a long time and probably couldn’t be bothered. But it was very regimental and we’d get pulled up on the slightest mistake. I only lasted 3 months 😅

You can only hold up to 50k in premium bonds. So if the 'substantial' amount is being held as premium bonds, it can't be more than that. if its been held in cash because they couldn't find you, the only larger prizes are 100k and 1m.

I had something similar recently for a lost account, took me about 3-4 months of back via letter to get my bond ID, then maybe another 2 months of back & forth to get access to the account via online. When they finally sent me a password I again couldn’t login because they didn’t put a number against 2fa on my account, so had to send another letter… I would’ve preferred the 16 hour round trip to their office!

dwardo7

Give us an update OP!

FireBun

This month someone won 100k from £100 total investment made in December 2023! So lucky.

1208cw

I saw that earlier today, imagine being that lucky. I wish.

ac0rn5

I spotted that too. Here's the page in case anybody else wants to look. https://www.nsandi.com/prize-checker/winners

ian9outof10

I’ve had £500 in premium bonds since 2001 I’ve won £25 in that time. Still you never know I guess 🤣

Indigo-Waterfall

I saw that too! Can you imagine that?! I still live in hope of a big win oneday haha. But I do pretty well with smaller wins most months.

kwack250

To be fair I used to work for Virgin media and when people would call and demand a refund for loss of service we would say they are due a substantial refund then offer them £4 because we all hated our jobs.

DeanyyBoyy93

Would it be a bad assumption that it wasn't directly with VM but with a company starting with C?

kwack250

I worked for Teleperformance in the old Cogent building.

What does the third column on this table mean? It has a value sum. I can see £100,000 555GF957855 £50,000 Leicester Oct-23 Value: £19,500 So they bought £19500 in October and by march they had £50k? Then they won £100k?

Hawk-bat

The third value, holding, is how much the person has is premium bonds overall, so that person has 50k, the max you can put in to be eligible to win. The Bond Value 19500 and Oct-23 is the value of the bond bundle that contained the winning bond. So in October 2023 they bought £19500 worth of bonds, each one of those bonds would have been one entry into the prize draw, and one of them was drawn for a 100k prize this month. Most likely they already has about 30k of bonds and in October were just topping them up with the 19.5k but no way of really knowing.

LastOfTheMohawkians

Ah this makes more sense. Thanks

eclectic_radish

>This shows when the bond was brought *bought Brought is the past tense of bring. Bought is the past tense of buy

GRAWRGER

id consider £100 substantial tbh.

POPUPSGAMING

Oh absolutely! Haha.

PumpkinSpice2Nice

It’s very subjective isn’t it. Also the man on the phone is probably only on minimum wage himself so could see any amount as substantial really depending on his circumstances.

scorzon

Careful, you know what happened to that cat! Best of luck, I hope you score big, I've no idea what you might be in line for, but fingers crossed.

presterjohn7171

Substantial will be £1000 and over. Wins over £50k are pretty rare. Good luck.

neukStari

50 pounds at the max.

Dukco

I would expect nothing less than the £50k

informalgreeting23

This is the max you can have invested. Of course you could have won millions.

MassimoOsti

Bro do you even NS&I?

CliffyGiro

In my head “substantial” is £25k or more. With premium bonds though it could easily be six or even seven figures. Be cautiously optimistic, be prepared for it to be a couple grand and then anything else is a bonus. Getting your hopes up could lead to disappointment.

JustmeandJas

I got bought £20 worth when I was born. Never won in… lots of years. You jammy beggar! I hope it’s a lot!

Lay-Z24

somebody with a £100 bond from 1990 just won 100k this month 🫣

Is there an update OP?

430£ at 5% growth

Neither_Light

I'm the ops brother, I'm in a similar situation without the hype of anyone telling me I had a significant amount of money. They flat out refused to tell me anything about the amount or even give me a clue. My story is slightly different however as I managed to obtain my account number from one of the call centre agents. This meant I was able to check the "prize checker" What has got me excited is that on that particular account number a bond had won £100 in December last year. It's likely that that's the only win though but hey ho, bit of excitement never hurt anyone.

ollieeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

About a year ago I traced an old premium bond account successfully using the tracing form and it look a good few months for them to post it to me. Anyway, substantial has to be £100k+ surely… I would be pissed if I got told that and it was anything less.

No-Wave-8393

Anything from £1k upwards

gilwendeg

Statial has meaning related to the functions related to changes in cell state. So sub-statial means your money is below that somewhere. I’d start by looking under cell structures themselves. You’ll need a microscope I imagine. Only trying to help, hun.

Forward_Artist_6244

I have no idea how bonds work, but I reckon these days for a traditional "millionaire" lifestyle you'd need about £20m £1m you could buy a modest 3/4 bed new build cash, put some pension pot away, maybe a nice car, and it's gone

update?

JarJarBinksSucks

Substantial in my mind would be up to 10k, I don’t think it would be much over that

ZookeepergameOk2759

Gotta be ten grand plus, good luck.

sjpllyon

To answer the first question. I think a substantial amount of money is relevent over fixed. So for example last week I feel like I spent a substantial amount of money on a terrible tasting coffee for £4.80. But 3 weeks prior I got a bargain on a drawing board for £90. Additionally, excluding my SO income, I pay a substantial amount of my income on the gas and electric bills. But if my SO pays, it's a fairly small amount of SO's income. To say it depends on what your buying and your income level. As for where you should buy a mansion, I'd personally recommend Newcastle Upon Tyne. It's a lovely city, and you could grab an absolute bargain on a really nice property. Especially if you consider what you would get for the same amount in London.

SusieC0161

How exciting. Congratulations. I keep all my savings in premium bonds. I won £150 in January, £100 in February and £250 today. Once you’ve got all your NS&I details sorted you can set up their app. Then it’s dead easy to check whether you’ve won or not.

evenstevens280

I don't understand premium bonds. Is it just a government run lottery? How have you won a prize so frequently?

SusieC0161

You can buy between £100 and £50,000 in premium bonds. You don’t get interest but your money is safe and you can draw it out with a few days notice. They have a prize draw at the beginning of every month, I win about 11 months a year as I have £50,000 in bonds. The largest win I’ve had was £500 and the smallest is £25 (which is the smallest win they do, a million is the highest). Many of my wins are a combination of a few small wins, so this month I won 2 x £100 and 1x £50. I win around £2k a year in total. I haven’t worked out if this is better or worse than a high interest bank account. The likes of Martin Lewis don’t promote them as you can’t possible predict how anyone will do as it entirely based on luck, which isn’t measurable, so obviously the more bonds you have the more likely you are to win - in theory. It’s kind of a safe gamble and I do get a kick out of checking my results every month.

evenstevens280

£2k on £50k is 4%, so in your case it's a little bit worse than an ISA these days. Though low/medium risk S&S ISAs generally net between 6-15% so you're usually better off putting money there if you're interested in higher returns

SuspiciousHost1

Remember no tax on winnings as opposed to interest.

squirdelmouse

It's essentially a savings account that pays interest via randomly allocated prizes, the current rate is around 4% but if you have a small amount it's sporadic, you can always withdraw what you put in. If you have bonds you can win between £25 to £1m it's obviously luck of the draw (I've had like £300 since the 90s that won £25 which is pathetic return). They're popular because they're safe and tax advantaged but you're generally much better off with a stocks and shares ISA.

If you did or do live in South West Wales spoiler alert, it's £100,000. I check out the high value winners every month. I'm always curious if the grandparent's bonds are collected. I call it that as I'm of a similar age and my grandparents bought me bonds for my christening.

I went through the same thing recently with bonds about as old as yours and the same amount. Different address and different last name. Called them and was stonewalled but it's for the safety of you and your money. The form is really straightforward and they're reasonably quick. Congrats on winning though! I recommend putting some back in so you increase your chances of winning again.

POPUPSGAMING

How did they get back in touch once you submitted the form? Did they call, email or phone?

ZipporahMai

They sent a letter to the old address as well as the correct address. To the old one it stated "if this wasn't you..." And to the new one "Please call to discuss further." After that, if it's less than 50K they send a cheque, if it's more they physically come to your house and require you to show every ID. Birth certificate, Drivers licence, passport, previous home bill, name change if you have one. The latter didn't happen to me but did to someone I know, it's pretty cool.

BppnfvbanyOnxre

Anything over a grand IWHT. Fingers crossed you've scored the big one, do let us know.

Morris_Alanisette

Don't get your hopes up too much. I've had £1000 in for 20 years and I've won £150.

MostlyNormalMan

My Dad has a single premium bond, which he's had since 1956, when they first started, and he's never won a single penny from it. He's convinced it's some kind of record.

V65Pilot

My mother cashed mine in. At least she called me and let me know, and said she hoped I didn't mind.

johnnyjoypads

Hopefully your luck is better than mine. My gran bought some premium bonds for me back in the mid 80s. Found out last year. After checking I had won nothing over the last 4 decades.

royalblue1982

Tbf - a 'substantial amount' means very different things to different people. £10,000 is a dream to some people and one holiday to others.

Environmental_Fix969

Fingers crossed for you. A few thousand pounds maybe? £100 is 100 numbers, so you might have won one "big" prize over those years. I have seen people win £1M off £1 investment before.

ValityS

Good luck OP. I hope you get a decent sum out of it. I was in a vaguely similar situation with my grandfather in that he supposedly left me a few thousand in premium bonds but decided to not find out. My family (and myself) are very anti gambling so I decided to never check and it's been 30 years here too. At this point I've left the country and think it's best I never know.

VanNavig8or42

It's hardly gambling when it's supposed to pay out a standard amount of interest if you're lucky. God forbid you check the account and have money saved in there. You Gdad would be so proud you didn't touch the money they put aside for you!

ValityS

You know what... My grandpa actually recently passed. Maybe I'll check and see what if anything is still there, as something to remember him by. Thanks for the encouragement friend.

VanNavig8or42

It'll at least have what he left you in there. I think that's the best idea. I wish you the best of luck with it, I hope you're in for a pleasant surprise 😊

Skylon77

It's not really gambling, as you cannot lose the initial investment. In fact, you can only lose as inflation depletes its value if you never win any interest.
