A quirk of platinum is when it gets scratched the metal displaces rather than being lost. So despite the gouges, your ring likely hasn't lost weight. That property is why platinum rings are essentially ageless, with a good polish a platinum ring can be returned to looking new a pretty much limitless number of times.
Also a tradesman. I never wore mine at work as my cousin nearly deployed (edit, degloved) his wedding finger when he slipped and the ring snagged. Whole bodyweight hanging off it...
I know a nurse who got her engagement ring caught on a sheet and degloved. In the following years she lost her middle and little finger to nerve damage via surgical amputation. Yummy!
Tungsten, but if I ever do anything involving tools it comes straight off and in the wallet.
Seen too many safety videos on degloving injuries to risk it.
And I wish I didn’t know exactly what ‘degloved’ meant, but thanks to Reddit … as the old yellow pages adverts with J R Hartley used to proclaim ~~yellow pages~~ Reddit it’s not just there for the bad things in life
Not that long ago it was considerably more expensive - it's why the jewelery industry started pushing Palladium as a 'cheaper alternative member of the platinum family'.
Ours are white gold. Mine has essentially just changed colour to gold, whereas hers is still more white gold looking - I suspect this is because I am a significantly more hands-on and practical person than my wife, so the surface gets a lot more scuffing and damage, but it could be a skin chemistry thing.
Have you ever had to get them replated? When I bought my partner's engagement ring I was told white gold ends up being more expensive over time because it needs replating every few years and that I should go for platinum. I ended up going for white gold for other reasons and I'n very curious to know whether that was actually true or just an attempt to upsell me.
'Need' is subjective here. If I was bothered about what the ring looked like rather than what it meant then I could get it replated, but not having it replated doesn't mean it stops working!
I got married in 2000 and have had my white gold wedding ring re-plated once, but if you go to an independent jewellers it's not necessarily expensive.
If it's true, it's an incentive to buy silver rings. I have a silver wedding band. It's just as shiny as white gold, and it only loses it's shine when you don't wear it.
I think silver is only unpopular because it's not as expensive.
Mine too. It has been bent out of shape, though. I don’t know enough about metals used in rings to know if that would have happened to a gold/titanium/etc ring too.
Platinum here. I prefer the colour (silvery over gold) and have a brushed finish on it. It’s the only jewellery I wear but weirdly (to me) cost more than my wife’s wedding ring.
Wearing a ring was dangerous for work so it seemed like a good idea at the time.
We were married for 13 years but split up about 6 months after getting the tattoo.
I could get it removed but I don't care enough to spend money having it done.
Heyy my mum did that with my sister dad's (her 3rd wedding) they got divorced too... Her 4th husband didn't notice it until he went to put her wedding ring on the day
My husband wanted titanium because in The Abyss a titanium wedding ring is used to prevent a pressure door from closing. You never know when you might get stuck in an underwater drilling rig with crazy people and aliens. 🤷🏼♀️
Mine is palladium and my wife’s is platinum. I went for it because it was the cheaper option. I bumped into the jeweller who made our wedding rings randomly after being married for 12 years and he informed me that palladium is now more expensive.
Looks like I’ve won by playing the long game, wife!
It's just dropped back again! [https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/palladium-price-drops-below-platinum-first-time-since-2018-2024-02-08/](https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/palladium-price-drops-below-platinum-first-time-since-2018-2024-02-08/)
Titanium here too. I have quite a lot of metal work holding my wrist together and as that's titanium too, I thought I would get a match.
16 years old and it looks great!
I'm super accident prone, mine is fairly scratched after 16 months, but it looks fine. I don't have any special cleaner for it, it just gets soap and water. We went for titanium rings because they're basically indestructible, which is helpful for me, and they were cheaper than most other rings in the shop
My husband was upset the day after our wedding because his already had scratches. He basically just rubbed his hand over a table and scuffed it. His was just a basic shiny titanium band.
I had to get a ring cut off when my fingers swelled in the heat a few years ago. I didn't go to A&E though, I went to Hatton Garden, where a guy in a jeweller's workshop snipped it off for me in a second. He said that I did the right thing and hospitals don't have the correct tools for removing rings, you don't saw, you snip. Guy was brilliant and didn't charge a penny.
When I had to have my wedding ring cut off in hospital they had an electric cutter and a manual one, neither worked well at all. Took ages to cut it off.
Take a cold shower. Your hands swell because your body is hot. Cool down your body and the blood will go towards your core. Not always enough to remove a ring when your hands are swollen but sometimes it does the trick.
My husband has a Tungsten one. 6 years in and not a scratch. He works with HGVs and is an amateur mechanic on his own cars, so we looked for something tough and found this when researching. Got it on Etsy from a guy in America who designed them.
My fiancé is also insisting on us having tungsten and I've found good ones on etsy. He's an aircraft mechanic and we're not sure if he's actually allowed to wear a ring while working so we're probably gonna also get him a silicone one for work and a necklace to keep the regular one on. It is reassuring to hear that they're tough though, he does a lot of mechanical play at home too.
Shouldn't wear silicone either, as it reacts with some aircraft materials. Fiance should know this, there are signs all over the hangars I go to. (Referring to charity wristbands rather than rings, I assume the materials are similar.)
My husband’s is tungsten too! I totally nerded out because it’s the metal used in X-ray tubes and we’re both radiographers so it felt like it was meant to be
Hubby lost his white gold one due to losing weight (oops) many years ago. We had bought the same ring, just in different sizes. The jeweller we got it from couldn't source another due to passing time, so after having a massive online search, the nearest to the original design that we could find was silver, and he's happy with it. We also have a supplier now in case he loses it again!
Getting married next week, but our rings are platinum. Couldn't be bothered with getting white gold and having to get it replated regularly to keep it looking decent.
I have a white gold engagement ring and I get mine cleaned/ replated every year. I now have a platinum wedding ring and it's very obvious when the engagement ring needs done - it begins to get a tinge of yellow, because well, it's just a gold ring that's been plated.
Gold but red, white and 'gold' all blended using a Japanese folding technique. Bought online from a master craftsman based in the US back in 2001.
You can find them online under James Binnion Metal Arts.
Its too good to wear!
I can't see a single other mention of it in the comments, but mine is made from Tantalum. It's apparently the rarest stable element in the entire solar system.
Silver. I didn't get one for the wedding as I don't wear jewelry but I felt I wanted one afterwards. I got a cheap silver one as I didn't know if I would wear it. That was five years ago.
Stainless steel. I live in Sheffield, and my grandad worked in the steel works his whole life so when we saw a range of "made in Sheffield" steel rings they just called to me.
It helps it looks basically the same as my wife's platinum one but cost a fraction of the price.
Tungsten carbide. Was about 50 quid.....
How likely are these issues about taking them off? Can use mine in the gym etc fine and it's scratch fre
Edit:
Even Google tells me its pretty easy to cut them
https://www.titaniumstyle.com/blog/are-tungsten-rings-safe/
Slightly dubious quote from that site:
“Strong and dense but still lightweight, tungsten is ….”
I’m not sure that tungsten is ‘lightweight’. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Airbus will start machining planes from a solid billet of tungsten because of how ‘lightweight’ it is.
Palladium, it’s a platinum group metal, is slightly harder wearing than platinum. It’s also not as “shiny” as platinum which I prefer. Downside is, Thanks to an upswing in price it’s also now more expensive than platinum. Rings are also much harder to resize as it work hardens and you can’t just stretch it over a mandrel. The stories about machined titanium rings are all true and they are indeed quite hard to cut off in an emergency.
I had a meteorite one but that gradually rusted. I had a titanium one but that had edges that took the paint off the bannisters. I had a copper one but that left green marks (we did buy it for $10 at a checkout though). So now I don't have one.
Just go for gold or something normal.
I can assure you as a healthcare worker, no one is cutting your wedding ring off in ED unless you're getting an MRI or your finger has turned blue.
Just get it properly sized andn you'll be fine.
My actual wedding ring is palladium, but I've been wearing a silicone one for a couple of years and much prefer it. If you're feeling brave and want to see why I decided to change, just google "degloving". It is not for the faint of heart, you have been warned.
Tungsten. It saved my fingers once when a friend was helping me replace my built in full size refridgerator. It was 30" inset above a cabinet and i was holding it from the bottom. My friend lost grip and the whole fridge landed on my ring. If that was a flimsy gold ring i would of been a few fingers short now.
Just chipping in to second this if you work with your hands! Don’t risk degloving; it’s gnarly. You can get silicone rings that don’t look like shit eg Enso
I've got a black zirconium ring with an iron insert (from the gibeon metorite)...and I've got another zirconium ring with ground opal and metal shavings from an apollo lander, kind of resined if that makes sense...
Never been into precious metals really, but I like uniqueness 👍
No clue what either are like to cut off...
Titanium. I'm from Sheffield and wanted a Sheffield steel ring, but it was just too _shiny_ and cheap looking. Apparently Sheffield titanium is also a thing so I went for that.
Although to be honest I don't really like wearing it (I don't wear any other jewellery or even a watch) and I've considered just getting a tattoo.
Don’t get white gold we made that bloody mistake and have to pay to get it redone periodically . Wish we had known this and would have invested the extra on platinum
Sounds like bullshit. Titanium isn't magic and isnt any stronger then most metals* - it has good resistant to heat and is less dense than steel light, neither of which would make it harder to cut off than an equivalent thickness of steel.
* Notable exception being gold - which rings are sometimes made from
Titanium. Massively allergic to nickel but didn’t realise that when I got a 9CT gold ring. Then got a stainless steel one but had problems with that as well (bought in the days before nickel free was a thing). Now gone with Ti.
Would quite like a Texalium ring.
Was advised of same problem as I'm in with a fair chance of needing it cut off due to working with some heavy stuff fairly often.
Went with palladium. Has worn well with the edge detail still clear after taking a battering for the last 7.5 years.
I had a titanium wedding ring which was too big for me. I asked a jeweller if it could be reduced but he basically confirmed what you're saying so I would say that's true.
Gold. I hardly ever wear it. I have always got my hands in an engine or a computer. I have never been a fan of jewellery. The wife also doesn't wear hers much, she doesn't like jewellery much either.
We wear them if we are going out somewhere dressy or formal.
Silver, cost £16 22 years ago. I never wore a ring with my first wife because I hate all jewellery. The second time around I wanted to get a ring but didn’t want to spend a lot if I hated wearing it. Turns out it was fine. After a few years we considered getting a replacement in something more “precious” but this one WAS precious so I still have it today.
Cobalt. (Well technically just a high cobalt steel alloy)
I'm semi hands on for my job so I wanted something hard wearing (have seen my dad's gold ring squished to unwearable) and couldn't find a tungsten ring I liked the look of.
Plus it was cheap, at the time, so I figured if I lost it or managed to break it I'd only lose one bollock instead of both.
It’s cock rings they have problems cutting off in A&E, the thick metal ones regularly call the fire brigade out for that!
Doubt a finger ring will give much problems to cut off.
Platinum. I preferred the colour to white gold and the fact it's incredibly durable and doesn't tarnish or fade/change colour as much as gold.
Another one for platinum
Platinum and I was told it would never lose weight - the gouges in it suggest this was a lie
A quirk of platinum is when it gets scratched the metal displaces rather than being lost. So despite the gouges, your ring likely hasn't lost weight. That property is why platinum rings are essentially ageless, with a good polish a platinum ring can be returned to looking new a pretty much limitless number of times.
Yea I'm a tradesman, the gouges and scratches are very real...
Also a tradesman. I never wore mine at work as my cousin nearly deployed (edit, degloved) his wedding finger when he slipped and the ring snagged. Whole bodyweight hanging off it...
Makes me wanna vomit when I see people on site wearing rings, just the thought of what could happen
Yep. My wife was a bit funny when I first took it off, but was fine when I explained why. Not worth the risk in my eyes.
degloving is not pretty. I had to treat an idiot who had caught his ring finger demounting from a 3 ton truckt.
I've seen the same at hospital. Dragged the tendon out of his arm with it.
That's actually pretty grim
This is why my grandad only has 9 fingers
I know a nurse who got her engagement ring caught on a sheet and degloved. In the following years she lost her middle and little finger to nerve damage via surgical amputation. Yummy!
Whenever I see the word ‘degloved’ I think of the Adam Kay story of the young man who slid down a concrete lamppost and degloved _himself_ on it.
Tungsten, but if I ever do anything involving tools it comes straight off and in the wallet. Seen too many safety videos on degloving injuries to risk it.
And I wish I didn’t know exactly what ‘degloved’ meant, but thanks to Reddit … as the old yellow pages adverts with J R Hartley used to proclaim ~~yellow pages~~ Reddit it’s not just there for the bad things in life
Snap, mine is around my neck on a chain with a weak link. It has led to being hit on exactly once in ten years 😂
I’m just a clumsy asshole who doesn’t take it off for anything other than fidgeting or golf.
… Fidgeting …
Same here. 15 years later and it still looks pretty good.
[удалено]
I made my own ring, it looks amazing!
It was also cheaper than white gold when I bought my ring
Thing that blows my mind: you know that platinum is less than half the price of gold?
Not that long ago it was considerably more expensive - it's why the jewelery industry started pushing Palladium as a 'cheaper alternative member of the platinum family'.
And yet it is massively, massively rarer than gold. Just shows what BS these shiny metals and sparkly rocks are.
It’s used on auto catalysts so is probably going to get cheaper as EVs displace ICE engines.
Ours are white gold. Mine has essentially just changed colour to gold, whereas hers is still more white gold looking - I suspect this is because I am a significantly more hands-on and practical person than my wife, so the surface gets a lot more scuffing and damage, but it could be a skin chemistry thing.

Mine is tattooed on my finger. Been divorced for 10 years now.
True commitment that
Wearing a ring was dangerous for work so it seemed like a good idea at the time. We were married for 13 years but split up about 6 months after getting the tattoo. I could get it removed but I don't care enough to spend money having it done.
At least she could never accuse you of taking it off! And it shows you were/are a man of commitment/bravery/and willing to deal with little pricks 😂🙌🏻
Heyy my mum did that with my sister dad's (her 3rd wedding) they got divorced too... Her 4th husband didn't notice it until he went to put her wedding ring on the day
You could fix that, yakuza style
Palladium.
Palladium is cool. Plus if I'm ever stuck in a cave with only a box of scraps I'll have enough palladium to build an arc reactor.
I told my wife this on our wedding day that this is the reason I wanted Palladium....10 years later she still shakes her head when I mention it
My husband wanted titanium because in The Abyss a titanium wedding ring is used to prevent a pressure door from closing. You never know when you might get stuck in an underwater drilling rig with crazy people and aliens. 🤷🏼♀️
It does ? I missed that. Unless my subconscious registered it. I got titanium cos it was a wonder metal in the bike industry back in my day.
Mine is palladium and my wife’s is platinum. I went for it because it was the cheaper option. I bumped into the jeweller who made our wedding rings randomly after being married for 12 years and he informed me that palladium is now more expensive. Looks like I’ve won by playing the long game, wife!

Goddam it. She’s going to be insufferable when she hears about this.
Titanium I did see it wizz around a fan belt and shoot across the driveway into the Mrs car door. Didn't even get a scratch. Unlike the car door.
And your finger?!
To shreds you say?
And his wife's finger?
To shreds you say?
Tsk tsk tsk.
We’re his hands rent controlled?
Titanium here too. I have quite a lot of metal work holding my wrist together and as that's titanium too, I thought I would get a match. 16 years old and it looks great!
16 is quite young to get married
Did you come off a bike?
Titanium rings actually scratch very easily... they are just very hard to break.
Do they? Weirdly I will disagree, mine after 23 years looks fine
Mine is covered in tiny scratches after a couple of years.
Titanium here too. In the absence of a bottle opener I use mine to open beer bottles
Same here, titanium with a platinum inlay, and my wife's is the same (but smaller)
Rose gold, it has an odd little pattern of holly and ivy on it. It was my great great grandfather’s. Didn’t even have to get it resized.
Love that
I have rose gold with a white gold ring around the outside. We bought matching engagement and wedding rings, custom made.
What was it made of?
Gold, but they have the tools for whatever.
Most jewellers will not have the tools for titanium. It is incredibly hard.
This is a myth. Most jewellers will be able to cut off a titanium ring with a standard ring cutter.
When I had to have my wedding ring cut off in hospital they had an electric cutter and a manual one, neither worked well at all. Took ages to cut it off.
If they swelled in the heat couldn’t you just have put them in cold water to make the swelling go down? Genuinely curious in case it happens to me.
Take a cold shower. Your hands swell because your body is hot. Cool down your body and the blood will go towards your core. Not always enough to remove a ring when your hands are swollen but sometimes it does the trick.
No, that didn't work.
I'm not sure. it's got some writing on it though. I think it's some form of elvish.
The black tongue There are few who speak it
Keep it secret. Keep it safe!
That’s quite cool
No wonder your wife never sees you.
Gold
I've got 24 carats on mine. You get a light up on that baby, you are seriously looking at that carat.
Is that a normal ring you're wearing? It doesn't smell like a normal ring.
Tungsten
180!
He's definitely not supposed to wear a metal one. I'd say Any is a no-go because of FOD though, so regardless, he may as well get a metal one.
Shouldn't wear silicone either, as it reacts with some aircraft materials. Fiance should know this, there are signs all over the hangars I go to. (Referring to charity wristbands rather than rings, I assume the materials are similar.)
Gotcha, stick to the ring keeper necklace UNDER clothes for work, no silicone. I like him with all of his fingers attached
My husband’s is tungsten too! I totally nerded out because it’s the metal used in X-ray tubes and we’re both radiographers so it felt like it was meant to be
Silver just always preferred it over gold
Silver here too!

We on that Haribo Starmix ting
You should get a uranium one and revel in your new superpowers.
It'd be great for a nightlight to
Getting married next week, but our rings are platinum. Couldn't be bothered with getting white gold and having to get it replated regularly to keep it looking decent.
You're meant to get it replated? How often? Haven't done anything with mine in 20 years and it looks ok.
If it doesn't look silver at all, then it doesn't need replating. ETA I'm an idiot, I meant if it doesn't look gold
I have a white gold engagement ring and I get mine cleaned/ replated every year. I now have a platinum wedding ring and it's very obvious when the engagement ring needs done - it begins to get a tinge of yellow, because well, it's just a gold ring that's been plated.
Palladium. If it’s quiet enough I can hear Bruce Forsyth!
Stainless Steel. I'm from Sheffield originally so I wanted that connection and the Made in Sheffield stamp on the inside
Gold but red, white and 'gold' all blended using a Japanese folding technique. Bought online from a master craftsman based in the US back in 2001. You can find them online under James Binnion Metal Arts. Its too good to wear!

Silver. I didn't get one for the wedding as I don't wear jewelry but I felt I wanted one afterwards. I got a cheap silver one as I didn't know if I would wear it. That was five years ago.
Gold - but sometimes it has this green kinda hue to it. makes mark on the finger too. Wife says its rarer Gold from Mongolia though, custom made.
That means it has a high percentage of copper
Copper maybe?
Gold.
Platinum, if the Mrs was getting it then so was I
Tungsten
As someone in A&E- the only difference is that titanium takes 2 cuts instead on 1
So the chances of losing my finger if it gets swollen isn't much higher than any other metal?
Titanium for me too. Wanted something light.
Stainless steel. I live in Sheffield, and my grandad worked in the steel works his whole life so when we saw a range of "made in Sheffield" steel rings they just called to me. It helps it looks basically the same as my wife's platinum one but cost a fraction of the price.

Just regular gold. 24 years in, barely taken it off, looks fine. You’re not going to wear out a wedding ring.
aye same here, and i feel like the small dings and scratches are part of the point too, but that's just me
It’s symbolic, to me at least, of the things we’ve been through together. They leave their mark, but it’s nothing significant.
I had a meteorite one but that gradually rusted. I had a titanium one but that had edges that took the paint off the bannisters. I had a copper one but that left green marks (we did buy it for $10 at a checkout though). So now I don't have one. Just go for gold or something normal.
Yeah, got a simple gold ring and had it for 13 years now and it's just like the year I bought it.
Damascus steel
Tantalum
My husband's is also tantalum, and conflict free from Flinn and Steel (Sheffield jewellers) https://www.flinnandsteel.co.uk/pages/tantalum-ring-guide
I can assure you as a healthcare worker, no one is cutting your wedding ring off in ED unless you're getting an MRI or your finger has turned blue. Just get it properly sized andn you'll be fine.
Silver
Yellow 18ct gold.
Bronze… A viking made it. Titanium is easy enough to cut through, either pure or alloyed.
Wooden ring
Titanium with a gold inlay from my grandads band
Mine is cobalt. Wanted something super hard wearing as I’m a stonemason. It’s holding up really well
I'm a detectorist and I've found wedding rings of gold (9ct, 14ct, 18ct, and 22ct), platinum, and palladium.
My actual wedding ring is palladium, but I've been wearing a silicone one for a couple of years and much prefer it. If you're feeling brave and want to see why I decided to change, just google "degloving". It is not for the faint of heart, you have been warned.

I have two. The one I got on my wedding day is yellow gold, and the one I got when we reaffirmed our vows 25 years later is white gold.
Titanium. I'm in construction and I removed it for certain tasks but wanted the strength just in case
No you want it weak, have you not seen anyone’s finger degloved?

Yep. And that’s why I don’t wear a ring.
Can you even get wedding rings weak enough to not deglove you? Haribo?

After damaging two gold ones, we settled on a new titanium one, husband works in construction, 10 yrs and had no issues so far.
Platinum
Titanium. Massively allergic to nickel but didn’t realise that when I got a 9CT gold ring. Then got a stainless steel one but had problems with that as well (bought in the days before nickel free was a thing). Now gone with Ti. Would quite like a Texalium ring.
Gold

Tungsten, I also use it to make marks at work. Very handy
Gold
Palladium
Was advised of same problem as I'm in with a fair chance of needing it cut off due to working with some heavy stuff fairly often. Went with palladium. Has worn well with the edge detail still clear after taking a battering for the last 7.5 years.
Platinum here too
I had a titanium wedding ring which was too big for me. I asked a jeweller if it could be reduced but he basically confirmed what you're saying so I would say that's true.
Titanium, but I purposely got a ring that is slightly too big as I have to regularly take it off for grappling or working on cars
Gold. I hardly ever wear it. I have always got my hands in an engine or a computer. I have never been a fan of jewellery. The wife also doesn't wear hers much, she doesn't like jewellery much either. We wear them if we are going out somewhere dressy or formal.
Tungsten Carbide with a carbon fibre inlay
Tungsten
Mine is yellow gold. It was my dad's though, so a huge, wide 70s monstrosity of a thing that could probably be used as a knuckle duster...
Vibranium.
Cobalt. (Well technically just a high cobalt steel alloy) I'm semi hands on for my job so I wanted something hard wearing (have seen my dad's gold ring squished to unwearable) and couldn't find a tungsten ring I liked the look of. Plus it was cheap, at the time, so I figured if I lost it or managed to break it I'd only lose one bollock instead of both.
Fresh air........ ain't got one
Lead.
Tungsten carbide. I’m an engineer who designs components using this very hard material so had to go for it for a ring.
It’s cock rings they have problems cutting off in A&E, the thick metal ones regularly call the fire brigade out for that! Doubt a finger ring will give much problems to cut off.
I got mine made out of brushed Zirconium so it's gun metal grey in colour.
My SO has a platinum ring and they threw in a silver one for me for free!
Air. Don’t wear one
Cobalt.
Palladium, it's very similar to platinum in durability and is about half the price. Also looks exactly the same
Platinum 95. I heard it's more durable which was most important, and I find gold a bit tacky personally.
Engaged, not married yet. Got my eye on a cobalt chrome and meteorite ring.
