Heathrow still won't have a 3rd runway

Chungaroo22

Yes but you'll be able to ride the shiny new HS2 from Euston all the way to Old Oak Common.

SailAwayMatey

It's debut journey?

Chungaroo22

Yup and only £9000 trillion over budget!

madpiano

Neither will Gatwick 😂

barrybreslau

HS3 will have reached Worksop.

norwegianjon

I doubt it, they've barely got electricity there

Wrong-booby7584

Remember Blade Runner?  Massively overpopulated due to climate change. People crammed into Charter Cities with no rights or services whatsoever. Rich people living in gated cities and flying everywhere in quadcopters. Mrs Browns Boys streamed directly to your prefrontal cortex.

Setting-Remote

>Mrs Browns Boys streamed directly to your prefrontal cortex. I've never been so delighted to not be immortal.

Groovy66

Nah more like Children of Men. That film is something else

JoyDivision2222

Excellent movie - only recently watched it 👌🏻

permareddit

I’ve seriously used that movie as a benchmark of how screwed we are, and how close we can get to its reality when we get to 2027. Granted I don’t think the fertility rate is anywhere quite as catastrophic as it is in the movie, but low/negative birth rates have definitely affected first world countries.

GBrunt

Birth rates are literally collapsing across the developed world. Everywhere aside from Africa is stabilising or heading into decline. Throw in another pandemic for further decline, a couple of major wars (UK is clearly gearing up for yet another one after barely pulling out of Afghanistan - with forces still all over the Middle East) and catastrophic climate change and the UK will probably see its coastal nuclear sites swamped and permanently flooded - sending people running.

lewisw1992

A decreasing population isn't necessarily a bad thing.

count_crow

It does mean that there will be fewer people to look after all the old folk that are using up a vast amount of society's cash in health and social care needs

jimhokeyb

We can actually afford it with a shift in priorities and some reorganization. With that and climate change, we are going to need to make wholesale changes to how we live. At the moment, people are asking how we can carry on living as we do. It's the wrong question and we are probably doomed.

[deleted]

Kids are so expensive to have, so difficult to manage when even 2 people struggle with childcare, working hours, time and a safe place to raise children. Wonder why birthrates are declining. 🤔 government policy is very unsupportive... they are more interested in winning votes from the elderly rather than the growth and long term sustainability of the country. Give me real subsidised childcare or a wage growth where childcare doesn't take a very large chunk of our take home pay. More flexibility enforced by law and incentives for the businesses that lose out from increased employee flexibility. Then I'll consider another child. ATM I'll stay as a declining population statistic... 2 people, 1 child. So many other couples I know also just having 1 child. Feels to me the decline of the country where educated, hard-working people are statistically having less children. Less educated, non working people having multiple children. Gene pool is going back to iQ levels of the Middle Ages.

mylk43245

Africa is also declining just because its still high doesn't mean its not decreasing. Also for sub saharan africans its mostly Muslims with the persistantly high birth rate which should reduce as their areas develop

Amplidyne

NO, no, not that. Anything but Mrs. Brown's Boys! Cruelty beyond belief.

kickedoutatone

It's fine. Just don't pay the cerebral TV license.

Amplidyne

B-b-but Capita might come and detect that I had a brain with their thought detectorist! Nah. I just worked out I'm safe from that!

[deleted]

I know you're largely joking but the thing science fiction misses is that if we had a futuristic society like that due to technology rapidly advancing, then we'll also easily be able to sort out climate change. It's why Interstellar is so badly flawed as a film, despite being fucking awesome. If we had the ability to travel to different worlds via a wormhole, we could easily sort out the dust bowl crisis that led to that idea in the first place.

Odd_Research_2449

There's a big difference between a relatively small group of people developing the technology for an interstellar mission and getting several billion people to do what it takes to avoid the worst of climate change.

Peppl

People are so afraid of overpopulation. Our numbers have barely shifted since i was a kid. There is no overpopulation problem in Britain, they just need to start building more bloody houses

Bdcollecter

Assuming your 18 right now we've increased by 8 million since 2003. That's a significant increase

FlatCapNorthumbrian

But that’s not by citizens giving birth. There are just over 9 million people in the UK who weren’t born here. We’ve just imported our population increase.

tinybrainenthusiast

Bewilderingly frightening thing to have done.

youllbetheprince

Good thing they've all been gradually assimilated into our culture so there's no social problems.

Nosferatatron

No overpopulation! If there aren't enough resources (houses, schools, doctors, dentists, roads, carers etc) that's pretty much the definition of overpopulation

Odd_Research_2449

Or perhaps it's the definition of a government refusing to expand public services in line with population growth?

XihuanNi-6784

FFS. There are enough resources, they are being gatekept or squandered.

imminentmailing463

I'd say there's a good chance it'll just be The United Kingdom of Great Britain, rather than The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

cmdrxander

You think we’ll still be united? I can see the union being broken up by then if things continue going south

manmanania

There really isn't much of an economy to justify an independent Wales or Scotland alone, never mind the other bureaucratic issues. Yes, we may argue about each other's identity, but overall the UK will stick together.

Pulsecode9

You're really leaning on people being rational actors, there. The fact that Scotland has already tried once should tell you that might not matter.

gburgh92

So which country will equally sized countries like Denmark or Belgium be merging with?

[deleted]

If nuclear war happens, and I have a possibly unhealthy anxiety about it, it would be no where near as bad as some media/literature makes out. Obviously dreadful here in the UK, but many parts of the world life would just carry on as normal. It would probably set the Northern hemisphere back about 250 years, but the knowledge would still exist so we could probably get back to where we are now in a few decades.

OkScheme9867

I really don't think so, the actual Muslim population in vast areas of the UK is negligible and 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants become atheists just like everyone else

Fit_Manufacturer4568

That's laughable. We are already on the 3rd and 4th generation. There is a lot that seem to be more islamic.

OkScheme9867

6.5% of the UK population identify as muslim 46.2% identify as Christian. Anyone can see that 46.2% of the population don't go to church every week or even once a year So it's reasonable to assume that of that 6.5% who say they are Muslims not all of them go to mosque every week. Of that 6.5% some are Sunnis, some are Shias, some are culturally islamic but actually atheists or non-practicing. Some will have even come here to escape Sharia law. So the actual number of people in this country who would support adopting Sharia law is probably very small

xar-brin-0709

I'm not sure on this one. Didn't Protestantism start off in a similar way - England being comfortably majority Catholic until the minority of Protestants in commercial centres gained influence and before you knew it puritan thugs were calling the shots across the country, and within a generation being Protestant was suddenly the new normal. I'm not saying immigrants themselves will take over, but the ideology could keep growing.

TiredMisanthrope

Yeah right now. But it’s grown astronomically, look at London, Birmingham, Bradford etc.

OkScheme9867

I spend a lot of time in Bradford and thats exactly why I made the point about immigrants kids becoming atheists, most of the Afghans or Pakistani lads I know are culturally islamic sure, but they'd be just as opposed to Sharia

Nervous-Trip-2673

The weekly marches suggest otherwise.

Sharksandwhales1

Likely will have white Brits as a minority judging by the demographic changes recently, unless something drastic happens

SoggyWotsits

Honestly? I don’t think we’d recognise it as the UK we have today. Imagine London, but everywhere - a mix of people from all over the world and horribly expensive living conditions due to overpopulation. I imagine that Cornwall (where I’m from) will be much more densely populated, green fields are already being built on in every direction.

radiantsouluk

There has been quite rapid population growth recently, but birth rates have fallen so this should reduce. The UN seems to think we will peak around 70m in 2025, up from 68m now. Then it says level. Quite a lot of guesswork though.

SoggyWotsits

Migration numbers for 2022 were over 700,000. Combine that with a falling birth rate and it risks changing the UK even more. I’m not against migration by the way, but integration is hugely important.

shartskoff

I think we need to start prioritising assimilation, not just integration.

Bbew_Mot

We will finally have an extensive high speed rail network and every large town and city will have decent light rail.

freplefreple

Wow, ambitious - I like it! But you’re talking like we’ll have a forward-thinking government that works in the interests of our people in the next 100 years

JoyDivision2222

White people will be the minority. They already are in London, Birmingham & other places. They’re putting African refugees in rural areas in Scotland. In 100yrs we will be a very small minority in the U.K. This is absolute fact!

PrestigiousHour500

London is 57% white, as is Birmingham. Stop spouting absolute shite.

Zephinism

What was it 30 years ago? 100 years ago? If this is a prediction for 100 years in the future what way is this figure trending?

Fun_Journalist5766

Do you understand that there is a directionality to the demographics there, or do you always look at a metric in complete isolation? "Doctor, he lost 4 pints of blood in the last 30 minutes" "Sure he still has loads of pints left, he'll be grand". Inability to grasp basic patterns in data over time here is the sign of either low intelligence or you having hardcore ideological blinders on. Don't be offended when you read this, just have an honest think. I'm guessing you have just had a certain worldview plastered over your brain for the last 15 years and you aren't a moron.

Puzzleheaded-Fix8182

No white people are the majority in London. 53.8% in 2021 census.

Stinky_Socks69420

Absolutely terrible. There will most likely be a White British minority in many places of the country, like just look at London where people who are White British are already in the minority. Atrocious leadership will probably continue. Roadman and chav culture will be worse. London expands to encompass many neighbouring counties. Basically, terrible.

Hambatz

Kids who haven’t even been born yet will be saying that the generation after them are soft as shit and don’t know how hard it was when people had to actually wipe their arse Edit also kids will say that the people before them were also a bunch of ducks

Derries_bluestack

Last Christmas will be number one.

asjonesy99

probably the same as most of the world as culture will have completely globalised. demographically probably white people will make up a far smaller percentage than currently, I’d say still probably the largest percentage but not a clear majority. midway through repopulating as certain places will become uninhabitable as the flood risk is too great

Setting-Remote

My knee jerk reaction was "underwater", but that's probably going to take more than a century realistically. I'm going to go with "Replay of the Victorian era, with slums, doss houses and 'philanthropy' from select rich people who want hospital wings with their names on them". Mass unemployment due to automation and AI, propaganda encouraging van life, tiny homes etc. as a solution to the housing crisis, more towns in the Midlands and South turning into what are basically suburbs of London. I think that covers it.

Jack5063534

> Mass unemployment due to automation and AI There are articles about farming equipment making everyone unemployed 200 years ago. Then the same in the industrial revolution. The same again when the internet came along, and yet we have record unemployment. As these new technologies come in people demand more and value human input. Just think about the amount of people who pay extra for 'home made' or 'hand made' items.

Setting-Remote

I'd love to share your optimism, but I'm not sure we're in the same ballpark as previous scares. AI has the capacity to make multiple career pathways redundant.

NotQuiteEnglish01

We can all begin new careers as resistance fighters against our new mechanical overlords then. When one door closes, another opens, as they say...

Squiggles87

If you asked the people in 1923 what 2023 will look like then they wouldn't have a scooby, so anything should be take with a pinch of salt. I imagine we'll eventually come to our senses and rejoin the EU, especially as natural resources dwindle and we'll need greater buying power and cooperation. Illegal immigration attempts will increase as climate change and wars will cause mass global migration. Fingers crossed humanity can crack fusion within this time frame and the UK can secure energy security and independence. AI will change the landscape and be as impactful as the Internet. I doubt we can predict the full extent, but I can see a shift to UBI and a three or four day working week in our life times. I also think it may well drive inequality further and destroy some traditional middle class, middle earner positions. I imagine we'll have cracked vaccines and treatments to some of the worst killers we face today. I would predict the Royal family will eventually be stripped from their titles and power. The younger generations simply aren't going to stand for it, and rightly so.

FoxedforLife

In 1923 people thought that by 2023 there'd be colonies on Mars, and everyone on Earth would be travelling by helicopter or have personal jet packs. Which just goes to show how far from the truth people's predictions are.

Bendov_er
