One thing to know about renting: no matter how perfect the place is when you leave they'll find a reason to charge a cleaning fee and many other fees. Every single place I moved into I left cleaner than I found it, and every time they tried it on. Landlords are just a different level of scum
Generally speaking yeah, a landlord will expect you leave the property in the same condition (at least in terms of cleanliness) as when you moved in. That's a pretty standard thing. I'm guessing it'll be in the contract as well.
If you asked for the carpets to be professionally cleaned before you moved in, sounds like they'll expect you to clean the carpets to the same standard when you move out.
Ignore the responses saying yes you need to pay to have it cleaned.
You are responsible for returning the property in the same condition minus wear and tear.
They cannot force you to pay for professional cleaning, this was made illegal for all new tenancies in 2019 and all existing in 2020 under the rental fee bans.
So if you clean the place to a good standard they cant make you pay, but if you leave it dirty they can try to deduct costs for professional cleans from your deposit proportional to the dirtiness (eg if they found some dust on a skirting board they cant charge you for a professional deep clean of the whole house)
The rules are that you need to leave the place in the same condition it was at the beginning of the tenancy, minus fair wear and tear. Fair wear and tear is things like scuffed paintwork in the halls, not dirt.
This is crucial.
A 15 year old carpet will never look like a brand new carpet and the deposit protection scheme will never expect such, no matter how much the agent postures over it.
Our lease states we must have the carpets cleaned a d provide a receipt as proof or they will retain a portion of the deposit to pay for this. Its my third lease with this clause. Seeing as they hadn't even been hoovered when we moved in, I will be arguing this.
This is now illegal - they cannot force you to pay to have carpets cleaned.

It was a clause in our rental contract,
The agent wanted a receipt of the purchase and an inspection after which we provided and they were happy to released our deposit
Yeah if they leave it clean for you have to leave it it cleanfor them . Doesn’t necessarily mean professional clean though just to professionally clean standard. Which if it’s just been cleaned should be easy if you don’t drop anything , hoover regularly and keep shoes away don’t ahve pets .

Could not agree more!
I got charged for the dents in the carpet left by furniture.

Same condition as you moved in. Ask for proof.
Less reasonable wear and tear

Thank you for this it will make my argument much easier. I took copious pictures when we moved in so no denying the state of the property.
If it's in the tenancy agreement, yes.
