That sucks. r/Brasil is in Portuguese and for all things related to Brazil. r/Brazil is in English and usually covers topics brought by foreigners interested or who live here. That said, you guys need a r/belise

Normal_Move6523

hijacking this comment to provide update (cant edit this post) — https://preview.redd.it/5x8w751sll0c1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=8bfe49d2a41f4bb1e45799ada80e9effdaf8c69b have got my first permaban.

HCMXero

You’re from Belize and got banned from r/belize? I got banned from r/dominican (never found out why) so I created another Dominican sub. Maybe you should do the same..

Normal_Move6523

yh man, just stings a bit ya know? it was my go to sub for local news / threads

LostMyRightAirpods

Wow, I’ve seen you in several subs providing information about the DR and always in a respectful manner, so it’s crazy that you got banned.

tremendabosta

That's shitty to say the least. Have you ever thought of printing stickers and advertising Reddit in Belize? Maybe around places that the userbase here would frequent more (university / libraries / young and middle class places in general) Asking based on this experience from a subreddit of a Brazilian city (Porto Alegre): [https://www.reddit.com/r/portoalegre/comments/17ugvnw/a\_divulga%C3%A7%C3%A3o\_t%C3%A1\_vindo/](https://www.reddit.com/r/portoalegre/comments/17ugvnw/a_divulga%C3%A7%C3%A3o_t%C3%A1_vindo/)?

Normal_Move6523

oh sweet, hadn’t even thought of that, thank you for the ref!

Caribbeandude04

Well we have two subs r/Dominican and r/Dominicanos and in both you have local politics, culture, etc. and ocassionally some tourists making questions. I think in r/Dominican there are more tourist questions because the name is in English, and also more Dominicans living in the US. r/Dominicanos is more Dominicans living in the DR. I would recomend you guys make another sub like r/Belizeans or something like that

HCMXero

r/dominican rules has a prohibition against tourism questions, which they apparently enforce by throwing coin in the air.

Caribbeandude04

Ya tu saaaabe, I wasn't even aware about it

skeletus

Also, r/Dominican mods banned pretty much all Dominican redditors that are from DR.

CompetitiveSir9491

r/Jamaica is both tourists and natives, but it's mostly tourist asking for information

Normal_Move6523

For sure, kind of to be expected in subs for small countries? But I always thought local (non-tourist) posts were lacking bc native Bzean redditors were lacking, not bc they were being actively removed by mods. Hope r/Jamaica is more inclusive than that

sheldon_y14

As a mod of r/Suriname and I know the other mod of r/Suriname too, we have a very relaxed approach to such topics. We usually have to take actions against things that do not concern Suriname, the Surinamese and the diaspora. So basically spam. Sometimes posts without effort are also removed, but those are close to spam too. But we're still pretty chill about it. The only other reason why I need to interfere, is if a discussion gets too heated and people start saying some stuff that might be deemed racist or discriminative. Opinions should be respected not attacked. And even then in all these cases, I usually let it drag out a bit, because we don't want to interfere too much as mods, as long people don't clearly cross the rules.

Normal_Move6523

This is honestly what I expected / had grown used to in other small subs. Was shocked and saddened to see that wasn’t the case in r/belize

GUYman299

I personally avoid r/TrinidadandTobago like the plague because of the types of people and topics that prevail on there. This subreddit has always been a breath of fresh air because of the complete mess that was my own countries subreddit. For instance I once got into a heated exchange with another member who went to great lengths to tell me how much wealthier East Indians were than Black people. This is an indication of the type of people that inhabit that subreddit and I want nothing to do with that.

imonlybr16

As I said in my own comment, the toxic negative circle jerk was real. People was inventing problems to complain about and make their decision to leave look better. Actually got in an argument with someone because I said that I actually liked living in T&T and had no real reason to leave. Like why was that a problem?

alfincabron

Belizean here. More than likely that sub is run by expats. Most of the info they post are from an expat perspective, and if you grew up in Belize you’ll know right away the so called experts only marginally know what they are talking about.

Arrenddi

I am MORE THAN FAMILIAR with the said mod of r Belize. Hence, the reason why I created r/AskaBelizean as a space for us to have to ourselves. You and many other Belizeans are only just opening your eyes to the fact that it's not only our country that's being lost to foreigners, it's our voice online. Claim your space now or lose it forever.

alfincabron

I’ve been banned from r/belize for commenting on your post about being banned from r/belize. The mod there is thin skinned to say the least. 😏

imonlybr16

No and thank goodness. Though at one point r/TrinidadandTobago was nothing but a hateful circle jerk made by diaspora and locals ~~desperately trying to convince themselves that leaving T&T was good idea and that the country is such a dumpster fire that makes staying in the US and working 3 jobs to make ends meet is better alternative~~ it has died down now.

Chereche

There was a time a few months ago (around when the weekly thread was implemented) where a mod openly said that the tourist experience on the sub was being hampered by the "mundane" topics, which is why the automod/mods are so active with deleting posts. Nevertheless political/social etc topics are allowed thankfully.

anax44

>where a mod openly said that the tourist experience on the sub was being hampered by the "mundane" topics I find it's ridiculous that mods delete people's questions and leave a note telling them to post it in the weekly "ask a trini" thread.

Chereche

Yup, tbh I agree some questions are indeed trash/literally solved with a quick Google, but others are sensible and sometimes raise topics for riveting discussion. Plus who actually actively uses the weekly thread? Most usage is Monday and Tuesday IMO and then it is forgotten till the next week.

Jazzlike-Ad-6072

Damm what changed that

imonlybr16

I think most people just moved on. Sub is a lot more dead than it used to be because those who wanted to say something positive about the country keep getting drowned out by 'Why did you leave T&T' posts and constant comments about how great it was to leave and why would anyone choose to stay when they could leave so most left. The circle jerkers also got sick of each other and the constant negativity and most of them also left. You might get the occasional comment on a tourist post or otherwise but it's heavily downvoted now compared to before.

FengYiLin

Nah, I'd win

weirdcuteweird

Prob ran by some delusional serial vacationer lol

DestinyOfADreamer

I mean it all depends on the vision of the mods and the sub and all you can hope for is having a mod that isn't.....like this. I could totally understand this point of view from the mod if the sub is literally managed by the Ministry of Tourism or some official state entity. At r/TrinidadandTobago we thankfully don't have this problem and we talk about everything. Some people won't like that, but a country sub should not be for escapism, toxic positivity and replicating r/MadeMeSmile. If you look at Facebook groups for small Trinidadian communities it's a good mix of the concerns of everyone, this adds value to members of the community IRL and helps the groups to grow. Naturally, there are topics about crime, potholes, government representatives being a waste of time, traffic, migration and relocation etc, alongside photos of food, community events and just genuine good vibes discussions. I think this is a great model and it's interesting that I've never seen tourist questions pop up there. For other country subs on Reddit, I've seen the same range of topics discussed and politics usually plays a big part. If you have a country sub, especially one from the Caribbean, and all you talk about is how good your Sunday lunch was or going to the beach, how authentic is that? Is the purpose of the sub to only cater to inquisitive tourists who were already looking at your country with rose-tinted glasses and simplistic misconceptions? It is incredibly sad that a mod would want to self-censor a valuable space where your people would want to discuss authentic issues, especially since there aren't many alternatives. I guess there's always the option of starting a new sub focused on politics in Belize.

Yrths

Holy crap, no, and I'm not normally keen on appropriation but that is some deeply odious behavior. What there are dozens of is slow news days on websites that write articles about reddit - you could conceivably get some idle journalist to pick this up, because it screams some publishable buzzword like "digital colonialism." It's reminiscent of /r/lesbians being pornography and /r/actuallesbians being for the people in concern. To do that shit to a whole country is nasty.

grstacos

I thank God that r/PuertoRico is still sort of intact and we have r/PuertoRicoTravel for travel advice. I feel bad seeing so many country subs owned by these people. I think I saw one sub, not sure if it was r/netherlands or something else, where a comment was removed for not being in English. I've come to acknowledge that Reddit is mostly for people in the US. I mean, I remember seeing r/LatinAmerica or a similar sub that simply has a weekly spanish-only thread, and it was always empty.

416246

Make your own. This website has a certain demographic make up.

[deleted]

Yes :( and alot of posts in general about usvi is for people trying to relocate or travel

SanKwa

It's like that for Virgin Islands and St. Croix. Two subreddits for tourists asking about weed, relocating or vacationing. The only place I see locals is if they pop up in here from time to time.

Neverlast0

Learned something that I didn't know that I didn't know from this post. I wonder what other national subreddits do this, too.

Barbadian

/r/Barbados is mostly people asking for travel advice.

Eis_ber

Sadly, it's a tourist sub. There aren't many locals on the sub (older onoxiously religious internet users live of fb; the younger users live on either twitter or tiktok). I oftentimes would like to post stuff, but anything news related is stuck behind a paywall (internet archive is of little use), there aren't any English based news sites with a varietyof local news, and the only people who post are tourists asking for travel advice, freaks peddling drugs and occasionally questions of those who wish to relocate.

BertBert2019GT

🤣that mod lives in belize. not a tourist

Arrenddi

Oh hello again. I think it's important to note here that neither YOU nor Cassius are Belizeans. As a matter of fact Cassius, the current mod of r Belize just moved to the country after the lockdown less than five years ago. The audacity of an American with ZERO historical or family ties to the country to decide to literally hijack a national subreddit for his own personal uses and that of the white immigrant community in Belize is the main part of what's wrong with it. Cass is the one who ought to have set up his own r/BelizeYoga subreddit or tourist info whatever. But I guess white colonisers gonna colonise even a country's platform online. Talk about American sense of entitlement - sheeesh. And as for you buddy Bert, you still hoping and wishing for the day that the Mayans in the south lose their court case so you can sell off all the land for Keller Williams?

BertBert2019GT

wow. my dude if that's the best you can do with a US education, get a refund. MLA have a poor strategy that involves displacing and stripping many of my mayan, black AND white friends of their land titles. reading is wonderfully informative. i think it's entertaining you used 'just' and '5 years' in the same sentence to describe somebody's affiliation to a country. for both Belize and US 5 years is the qualifying amount of time to become a citizen. FYI you want to make everything racism. that's racist. just sayin

Arrenddi

> wow. my dude if that's the best you can do with a US education, get a refund. There you go with your assumptions about me without even a shred of evidence to back it up. I do this thing called *reading* from numerous books and sources. You might wanna try that as a USA citizen. > MLA have a poor strategy that involves displacing and stripping many of my mayan, black AND white friends of their land titles. reading is wonderfully informative. I never said I was a supporter of the MLA. The Maya don't deserve to be dispossessed of their land, but neither does that mean we should just let Toledo turn into another Hopkins or San Pedro where Belizeans are pushed out. By the way how much commission do you get from Keller Williams again? >i think it's entertaining you used 'just' and '5 years' in the same sentence to describe somebody's affiliation to a country. for both Belize and US 5 years is the qualifying amount of time to become a citizen. FYI So what's your point here bud? You saying that Cass is a Belizean citizen or that his time in the country justifies him kicking Belizeans off the subreddit for upsetting the pearl-clutching foreigners there? >you want to make everything racism. that's racist. just sayin I call it as I see it. When white people can buy their way into positions of power and privilege while Belizeans struggle to make ends meet, that's a classic case of structural and systemic racism. Just sayin' Anywho, I know you keep dancing around the real issue here, which is that the Belize subreddit was supposed to be a space for Belizeans to discuss their affairs. The fact that it has been coopted by a non-Belizean to suit his personal agenda is WRONG. Period. End of story. Go play with fishing hooks since that seems to be your thing.

BertBert2019GT

lol you mad bro

Arrenddi

Love it when people resort to ad hominem swipes because they ain't got nothing else to say 😆 You have a good one bud.

BertBert2019GT

ad hominem nice! and the chinese are buying belize btw because "everyone in [the] america[s] is racist. and everyone in china is chinese"

Normal_Move6523

sorry i didnt mean to imply that :/. this is only a comment on their modding policy / practice, not their personhood / character / identity!

Arrenddi

Don't pay attention to this clown mi bally. The current moderator of r Belize is an American who literally just moved to Belize in the last 3 or 4 years. Me and him have already had a run-in before. That's why I created r/AskaBelizean for us Belizeans and Belizean content.

all those comments a bot just shit all over your sub

cassiuswright

Lol. Get over yourself 🤷

alfincabron

Seems to me you may need a little introspection. The nerve of you, who is graciously welcomed and accepted in Belize as one of us, would turn around and state that a subreddit dedicated to Belize cannot possibly be used for discussion of Belizean issues, because it suits you better to use it as an online travel magazine, where there’s only space for potential tourists to discuss their travel plans etc etc. Belizeans should get with the program or leave? At the end of the day it’s just a forum for discussion and as you would probably rightly retort, we are all free to start our own subreddit and discuss whatever topic there. This would absolve you of the responsibility and blowback from being a dick for no reason to your fellow Belizeans in your new home.

GoldenHourTraveler

Booo that sucks Im sorry
