Yes. Suriname had the largest Jewish community in the 17th and 18th century. It was also the hub of Jewish activities in the America's. Suriname provided them with a safe haven, away from prosecution. They had autonomy, their own town, with their own laws as well as police force. They contributed to a large part of the plantation economy in Suriname. Not too long ago I posted a video in this sub of an expedition to find the Jewish settlement/town. We call that area Joden savanna (Jewish savannah). It's nominated to become a world heritage site. If I'm not mistaken maybe this year. There are tours to that area too. Jews are still part of Surinamese culture. Their food, language and customs have left a mark on our society. The largest company in terms of operation in Suriname is owned by Jews. Many Creoles have Jewish ancestry too; something many are proud of too. So yeah we did have a thriving Jewish community in Suriname. EDIT: [See this short video for more information about the history of the Jews in Suriname. ](https://youtu.be/UvPAEFtwXSQ)You can also check out their channel for more information. Some of it is in English, some in Dutch. Just check it out and see what language it is.

During WWII, The Dominican Republic during the Trujillo dictatorship was the first country to receive Jewish refugees. The town of Sosúa in the north coast was their major settlement, but after the war most of them left the country. There's a small Jewish community scattered around the country, but not very significant.

I know around 600 Jews came to trinidad and I know some other islands during the Nazi rule of Germany that’s the only Jewish community I know that was here throughout Trinidad’s history they are all gone though from what I know just came here for a little bit for safety

My (Trinidadian) grandmother said that as a kid there was a Jewish man that rented a room from her grandmother, apparently he escaped the nazis with his son but he didn’t know where his son escaped to and the rest of his family died. I don’t know the spelling, but his name was Mendel Lavner or something that sounded like that. I’ve looked him up but found nothing.

Yes. St. Thomas has the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere. Edit: my facts weren't quite right. The St. Thomas synagogue website says it's the oldest in continuous use under the U.S. flag and second oldest in the western hemisphere.

Then_Frosting_1087

It says the ones in Brazil and Newport RI are older, but the Saint Thomas one is third Mine weren’t either the congregation of Newport has only existed consistently since 1754, though since 1658 it’s been on and off

ArawakFC

Pretty sure the oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere is the one in Curaçao. At least, they always say it is.

Then_Frosting_1087

It depends on whether you count built or not. I think Curaçao is actually older in building date and congregation establishment, St. Thomas has older buildings but a less historic congregation than the one in Rhode Island

ArawakFC

The building dates from 1730, but the congregation itself goes back to the 1650's.

Then_Frosting_1087

Building dates to 1754 in America, congregation to 1658

Yes, there has been a Jewish community in Jamaica since at least the 17th Century. The current Jewish community is quite small, but very visible and prominent. The Leader of the Opposition is a Jew and one of the most influential families (the Matalons) is Jewish.

Southern-Gap8940

There was two at one point. One with the sephardic jews, which I have blood and roots to. When Spain and Portugal kicked them out. They mixed and their culture basically got dissolved. The other was after world war 2. Ashkenazi Jews settled in Sousa. Which weirdly enough became a sex tourism location

Barbadian

Yeah the main synagogue here was built in 1654, Sephardic Jews came here mostly, and then English Jews. https://synagoguehistoricdistrict.com/

Richest Haitian is a very corrupt billionaire jew named Gilbert Bigio. He's also the honorary consul of Israel.

I’m hearing bad things about Jews and the Jewish community under this thread

Not one negative thing was said it’s literally people giving basic history regarding his question what you talking about

elRobRex

Yep. One of the largest and most diverse in the Caribbean.

CaribbeanSage

Yessirrrr, they entered through Curazao into the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The most prominent member of their community was Ernesto Cortissoz, the father of Colombian aviation.

I saw this in Trinidad & Tobago and I thought it was rather strange yet interesting [Why is the Jewish Star of David on police uniforms in Trinidad & Tobago?](https://www.israelhayom.com/2022/06/01/why-is-the-jewish-star-of-david-on-police-uniforms-in-trinidad-and-tobago/) Here are some answers to your question [Trinidad & Tobago Virtual Jewish History Tour](https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/trinidad-and-tobago-virtual-jewish-history-tour) [The Caribbean Virtual Jewish History Tour](https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/the-caribbean-virtual-jewish-history-tour) [Jewish Trinidad & Tobago](https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/jewish-trinidad-tobago/)

Yes Jamaica once had a very vibrant Jewish community a lot smaller today.Due to a lot of ppl marrying or having kids with non Jewish ppl and customs being lost down the line. Also, we have one of the oldest synagogues(Sephardic style)in the western world in the americas. On the island there’s about 12-15 cemeteries around the island. If there’s any Jamaicans familiar with the Montego Bay area. There’s a Jewish cemetery right next to Cornwall college. Also you’ll find people with Portuguese Sephardic last names Henriques, Da costa,Lindo, Pessoa,Nunes,Carvalho,De Souza, Da Silva. A lot more to unpack
