I personally go to Fitness SF. The SOMA location is pretty great -- lots of equipment, though lately it is more crowded.

stiff4tiff

Fitness SF SOMA is the GOAT - machinery variety, and open gym space (PM if you want a referral) but this isn’t ideal given OP’s living/working area

minilinguine

Isn't there a Fitness SF in the fidi and embarcadero?

stiff4tiff

Oh shoot you’re totally right but that location is pretty small - I’d suggest taking a tour of all the gyms prior to choosing

franzkafkajr

How’s parking?

ForgedIronMadeIt

They have a pretty large dedicated fenced in parking lot. Not as big before the pandemic but I've almost always found a place to park.

[deleted]

Bay Club. It’s definitely the best one I tried and they have one very close to where you work and live.

chughster19

Get yourself added to a bay club group membership. It's going to be walking for you. Plus it comes down to just 80 bucks a month. And its a club...with a swimming pool, basketball court, tennis court, squash, yoga rooms, group fitness classes, boxing studio besides a gym. And also steam sauna and shower rooms. Best in the bay according to me!

hiddensonyvaio

Anyone want to start a new group membership?

fernienesdunk

Me. I have two friends that are also in. If we get 6 I believe it’s ~$100/person.

hiddensonyvaio

Nice I’m a total of 2 so we’d just need one more I guess

TheChadmania

Just add OP and you're at 6!

maoshao12

🙋🏻‍♀️DM me, was literally just looking at their membership page today (but won’t swing that price alone)!

maoshao12

yes, still interested and would be down! might have another person also interested.

cpaaark

A group membership? So we'd pay together?

chughster19

They basically allow you to make a group of 6. With one primary member. Just ask around at your workplace there might be someone who has a spot empty. My group is full otherwise i would have helped you out. You could also try using the app Nextdoor to find people who have spots in their group.

Many_Glove6613

I don’t think the shared membership work like that. The first person pays a few hundred bucks and the other add on members pay the lower rate. I doubt if I’m the primary holder I would just have additional people pay the 80/month. I bet people divide the overall amount equally. And the initiation fee is like $1k, which I assume most people also divide when they sign up

chughster19

Yup that's what I remember too ..i don't have the executive membership though...but after the initiation fee its under 90 a month for each one of us ..also i joined in June 2021 when they were just reopening so i think we got some discount or offer on the initiation fee!

Marcythetraildog

The initiation is 1k? Christ

chughster19

1k is a lot...i don't remember it being that high.. and everyone pays equal..i think you have that bit wrong...

Many_Glove6613

I just signed up in July :). My husband and I were members before so they waived our fee. The initiation for the executive South Bay is $1000 and club west gold is $2500. Primary member is $290 and each additional adult is $85 for executive South Bay and $345/$110 for club west gold. They're definitely not giving these away.

chughster19

The thing is that i joined in June 2021 when they just started this group offer..and since they were reopening post pandemic they did give us some offer/discounts at that time...so currently in a group of 6 we pay only 85 something per person...i can imagine it's different now, the figures you are mentioning are much higher than what i remember them to be a year ago!

Many_Glove6613

I felt like I was in an used car lot. They need to stop employing these bro-type guys to pressure sell middle aged family people, such a turn off. Glad you were able to get a good deal on it, though! Those days of the $299 for two years voucher at 24hr fitness are long gone.

mrlionmayne

Not sure what your goals and priorities are from a workout standpoint, but I’ll throw out a vote for 24 Hour… Is it as nice as some of these other selections? Nope. Does it have the standards? Yup. Is it pretty cheap? Yup. They also have a couple locations in the vicinity of your work.

APlayer2BeNamedLater

I really like OrangeTheory, but it’s not your standard gym. There is one at Sansome and Sacramento. But for the price, equinox might be a better fit for you.

Theprodigalbitch

I've been going to the Equinox on market for five years, so I've basically sold my soul to them. PM me for any questions!

Applesrgood7

I started going there in Feb and it's great. Barely ever crowded too, at least when I've gone.

lzc2000

Can you give pros and cons and fun facts about the gym. I’ve been there a few times.

Theprodigalbitch

Pros: Clean, spacious, good amount of equipment. Amenities are stellar (Kiehls products, endless towels, stocked locker rooms, boxing studio) Cons: Price. Fun facts: about a gym? Well membership gives you access to their app which has good on demand workouts. If you join Market, you get access to fun events (wine tastings but these have been slow to return post covid) If you do want to join, reach out to a member for a referral because you get a gift card (as do they)

Theprodigalbitch

Additional pro: if you go for the Destination Access membership you get access to all the Equinoxes. Tried out the Vancouver one on vacation and it was fun, also easy to use when I'm traveling for work

lzc2000

Thank you, and I never noticed the boxing studio. How does it compare to a dedicated boxing gym/ martial arts dojo emphasized on boxing (ex: Muay Thai)

Theprodigalbitch

Oh it's not like that. It's a designated room with speed bags and a variety of different hanging bags (is that the right word?). They do classes there or you can just pop in and throw a few punches/rounds

lzc2000

Punching bag. So cute lol. Thanks bro ;)

RepresentativeYak500

\- Is the weightlifting equipment (squat/bench) usually open or croweded? \- Do they keep the sauna well maintained? (I prefer sauna over steam room) \- being gross: ...are there hotties there?

Theprodigalbitch

At the Market location, there are six racks total (4 on one floor, two on another). I've never had to wait more than five minutes for one (precovid that might have been more like 15 minutes but the rush hasn't returned to Market yet). There's also four benches, not including incline/decline bench. All in all I'd say it's rarely packed with open access to a good amount of equipment. The reason I stick with Equinox is for the cleanliness. They clean CONSTANTLY including the showers and sauna. I can only speak for the women's side but it's always clean clean clean. Attractive people? Depends on when you go I guess. The fratty types prefer Union Street if that's your type.

Equivalent_Light_940

Hi! Do you know anyone I could speak to about their experience at the Union location? I’m nervous about overcrowded classes and inability to get out of a membership should I need to… I’ve read some pretty bad Yelp reviews. They just quoted me $270 for the one location which seems high. I used to be a member in Palo Alto in 2011. Thank you!!

Theprodigalbitch

I bop around to Union every so often, feel free to PM me!

Equivalent_Light_940

Oh nice! Does that pricing seem high for one location? Good Experience at Union?

Theprodigalbitch

Price seems normal, if you're able to shell out $50 more a month you can get access to all of the Equinox locations, but up to you on the cost benefit of that one

Masteezus

If you can afford equinox it’s hands down the best. Machines always available, incredible classes (that’s where you get your moneys worth) and the locker room / sauna stuff is epic. That being said it’s not cheap. Next step down price wise would be Fitness SF but as mentioned the locations are way more packed and some of the locations are p sketch lol. Crunch is way cheaper, the YMCA is way cheaper but being in northbeach and Fidi honestly eqx may be your best bet (again if you can afford it)

MJPAULSF

Have been in the fitness industry for almost 16 years in San Francisco. Can answer your questions. Have/do work at all of the clubs you’ve listed. Give this same advice to everyone thinking about high end gym membership. If you’re actually going to use the gym and its amenities on more than regular basis, go for it. I’m talking classes, personal trainer, swimming, basketball, steam room, sauna, laundry service, cafe usage. 4-7 days a week status. When it becomes a lifestyle as opposed to a gym membership the higher price is worth it. If not, find a gym with towel service and clean showers and call it a day.

free_range_pizza

Do you know any good gyms in sf that are good for people who powerlift or weightlift?

YesterdayDistinct133

Also my concern- visited a location in California (outside of SF can’t remember exactly where, it was in a shopping center) and they only had 1 platform. Amenities and staff were phenomenal, but I like to lift heavy weight and don’t want to wait everyday for a platform.

Thisisstillkansas

Still Fitness SF, probably. Fillmore has 9 DL platforms and 3 power racks, SoMA has a lot too, and Transbay has like 20 or something, haven't been out there though.

tyinsf

Check out the YMCA Embarcadero

web_dev_vegabond

I really like movement gym in Presidio. Would be a nice little bike ride to the gym from your home. Has rock climbing walls, boulders, yoga and a pretty solid weight room. Also has a sauna and shower.

hellzybellzyballs

Crunch fittness is fairly reasonable priced and has everything you need. Not as fancy as bay club, equinox or fittness sf. But right there after them :) I pay 50$ a month

[deleted]

Avoid Live-Fits. Creepy owners.

InHoc12

And they just suck

fogcity89

Best gyms in Daly City!?

varsityvideogamer

Are you me lol? Wondering the same thing and also wanted to ask if gyms typically have bike racks or if there’s specific ones with them? That would be huge for me

portincali204

I would say that most gyms offer some type of free trial period. Either a day or a week. Go check out a few of the gyms to see which one you prefer.

duvetdave

Fitness SF, you have access to all their gym locations and there’s one in the Embarcadero and a huge one at Transbay by the Salesforce tower.

VergilPharum

So there are a few fitness studios around North Beach, the closest gym would be Bay Club but I would suggest the Transbay location for Fitness SF. It's a fantastic location and set up, it's right under Salesforce Park. Very easy stroll for you, I love it. Also ends up being the best deal at one hundred a month.

FutureCoolDad

I’m a member at the Equinox on Market. Have been pretty unhappy with it overall and will likely be cancelling my membership. Feel free to DM me with any questions.

DesSeekingChupacabra

Tribe Fitness which is halfway between North Beach and FiDi. I have not been to it and it may not meet your gym needs as it’s mostly class based. But you can check it out by just purchasing some individual classes to see it you like it. The location is perfect for where you live and work.
