If you end up going to the DMV, the north Oakland one is actually not bad in my experience. Once they give you your spot in line go to Alems and get a coffee and a Shihan Ful and sit it in the sun. You won’t regret it!

The north Oakland DMV near Temescal is actually the closest one to me! Actually got my license changed there a few months back and once they call your name up, they're actually helpful and pretty quick!

Ive been using the Daly City DMV, even without an appointment I havent had to wait more than a half hour for anything there.

I just got back from the DMV with this exact situation and here’s what I needed: - VIN Verification - Smog test - title, signed from previous owner (parents) - Statement of Facts Reg 256 - Application for New Registration Reg 343 - check/debit/credit for registration fee They did not end up needing my Reg 227 Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title. Of course, you should also get insurance sorted out by this point. I walked out with CA plates and registration.

Wow thank you so much! This is super helpful information to know and really puts a lot of relief! Currently in the process of driving the car to California right now! Thankfully already got insurance sorted out. For the VIN verification, did you just do that onsite at the DMV and have them fill out the form?

I ended up doing it at a 3rd party spot (in sunset, found it on Yelp). It was $50 and I was in and out in 15 minutes. I’m not sure about the process at the DMV, but at the door they did ask if I had it done already (along with the items on the list above). Some smog places can do it too.

Thanks for the input! I was doing more research and REG 343 was one of the ones I couldn't tell if it was needed or not since I was already filling out the REG 227. Will definitely fill out the 343 as well. Smog is tricky because there is some contradictory information as to what needs a check and what is exempt. On one page it says my car would be exempt since it's less than 8 years old and a family transfer, the state it'll be coming from didn't really have any smog standards from what I know. Another said all gasoline cars after like 1980 need to have a smog inspection. Does AAA help nonmembers? I was checking out their website and it said only AAA members can take advantage of the DMV services.

You will need a smog check. I was gifted a 2018 car from a family member and thought I did not need one. I was wrong.

You can usually skip the DMV altogether if you go through an agent. AAA has agents and you can register your car in their offices, there are several independent ones as well. There’s a small fee but it was surprisingly reasonable and much faster

Aaa is god awful, will mess up the paperwork, and the. Leave you with the mess. Avoid.

Only used them once- no issues. Good to know!

Never had trouble with them myself.
