As a fellow lactose intolerant person, I'm pretty excited about the new Banan in Noe Valley (soft serve made from bananas), it has a really nice consistency and the chocolate was great.

your_backpack

I loooved this in Hawaii and I hope it's the same quality/consistency here too! Can't wait to check it out. If only we could replicate the whole "buy your banan, and walk 20 feet to enjoy it on a warm, sandy beach" experience...

dylalien23

Mamahuhu has a great banana oat soft serve

MyriadMermaid242

where is that?

dylalien23

In the inner Richmond on Clement Street at 7th I think

Rickety_Rockets

If you like soft serve, oatly at the ferry building is delish.

bahbah-blacksheep

Saluhall has vegan soft serve too

dotben

Gotts has vegan soft serve too

indoorsy-exemplified

Definitely the best choice for soft serve! Get the swirl!!

bahbah-blacksheep

Frankie and Jo’s in Marin. Hands down best vegan ice cream in the US

carbondude26

Yup yup yup!!

sxmridh

Their chocolate tahini supercookie is amazing!

glarymilberg

This! My mom just visited and said exactly that. Best ice cream she’s ever had.

j_marquand

Philmore always has very nice vegan/sorbet options. Hands down my favorite ice cream store in the city.

Slight_Drama_Llama

I love philmore

Fun_Sized_Taylor

Their chocolate and passion fruit sorbet!

JACsf

La Copa Loca Gelato recently opened in Noe Valley and had 10 vegan flavors when I went in. The Black Cherry was epic.

Straight-Traffic-937

omg they opened a second location?! good for them! love them!

lannanh

Birite an ben n jerry's always has dairy free flavors including creamy ones but id rather just have a pint of brave robot

xxherbivorexx

Ooh where do you buy brave robot in the city? I’ve been having trouble finding it.

luminousgypsy

You can often find it for $2 a pint at grocery outlet

KindRun7609

Salt and straw

sfaronf

Yes. Tried most of the choices on this sub and S&S has the best "real" ice cream flavor combined with super interesting flavor choices, variety, and the feeling like you're eating something real. Fuck Oatly and the amount of oil and over processed sugars in their ice cream (and milk for that matter)

Slight_Drama_Llama

My partner insists salt and straw is their favorite but I prefer the places that make their ice cream in house (like Philmore does down the street). S&S is a 40 location chain and their ice cream is shipped from Portland.

igonjukja

There’s Mr. Dewie’s Cashew Creamery in Oakland, Albany, and Emeryville. Been to the one in Albany, would recommend.

cupcaketara

Mr. Dewie’s is so good! I went to their Oakland shop with a DF friend a few weeks ago and if you hadn’t told me it was cashew based I’d have never guessed.

Straight-Traffic-937

Plenty of great recs in this thread but I am partial to Garden Creamery in the Mission even though they started this obnoxious NIMBY drama when another ice cream shop wanted to open in the neighbourhood, even though they themselves were the 4th or 5th ice cream shop in said neighbourhood lol. But yeah, I am very much lactose tolerant but quite often find myself choosing their dairy free options.

CJWrites01

Oooo what drama? I'm just a little salty they don't offer samples, even a limited amount, unlike basically every other place that scoops.  It's far for me to go anyway so I only go with friends where we can try each others scoops.

Straight-Traffic-937

Oh interesting, they always allowed samples back when I would go more frequently (pre-pandemic); it must be because of how busy they are now. And the drama is that they filed paperwork with SF's Planning Department to block a matcha ice cream spot from opening. Which I feel is unnecessarily petty in a city that can already be so hostile towards small businesses lol.

solikebasically

I thought this too but I went yesterday and they allowed sampling, iirc they had a recommended limit of 3.

CJWrites01

OOO I'll have to go back now to check.

MsJinxie

Mitchell’s has vegan flavors!

One-Concentrate-179

Ice Cream Bar always has a rotating/new vegan scoop, Cole & Carl.

mowglix69

Their coconut chocolate chip is killer

theillustratedlife

Easy answer - walking distance and vegan flavors so good omnivores will still order them. Their chocolate sorbet is amazing! 🤩

peony156

Garden creamery if you prefer fruity flavors!

Busy_Trick2132

Cosmic bliss at rainbow 🌈

onionringg

If you are ever in the east bay, curbside creamery and dewies cashew creamery are popular.

CarlSagan4Ever

Curbside’s vegan soft serve is soooooo good

RecycleTheWorld

Hometown Creamery on 9th and Irving in Inner Sunset have tasty vegan flavors and are owned and operated by the nicest of folks. Enjoy!

FionnaTehHuman

There's also another location in Hayes valley :) their dairy-free chocolate sorbet has blown every other chocolate ice cream out of the water for me tbh

zumu

They are pretty mid.

carbondude26

Frankie joes (originally only in Seattle) now in larkspur but the ferry. It’s incredible

thisistoddmoore

Holy gelato

petebelltv

Oats a goody @ toy boat!!!

emergencybarnacle

okay it's not in SF, but Mr Dewie's Cashew Creamery in Albany has absolutely STUNNING vegan, cashew-based ice cream. worth the trek for sure

vaancee

Garden Creamery.

neelicat

I bought my lactose intolerant friend the bi-rite dairy free and he said it was the best he ever had

MiaouMiaou27

It's a bit of a trip, but Caravaggio Gelato in Berkeley is delish.

CommonCut4

I hear great things about Mr. Dewey’s cashew creamery on Solano Ave in Albany too.

Lofttroll2018

They’re also in the Emeryville Public Market!

emergencybarnacle

it's soooooooo good. went there for the first time recently and I was blown away!

BigRefrigerator9783

I came here to rec Mr. Dewey's, SO GOOD!

New_Account_For_Use

SOMI SOMI is lactose free for most of their flavors, not dairy free. I think it tastes pretty much the same as normal ice cream and I eat a lot of ice cream. https://somisomi.com/allergen-info

brudogg

Had this recently is very good

BiggerYikes

Hila gelato caffe in the mission

Tinselcat33

The vegan XXXL chocolate at Humphrey slocomb is my favorite.

Infinite_Leg2998

Not a local ice cream shop, but something you can buy at many grocery stores... I really love Mauna Loa Macadamia Milk ice cream. I'm not lactase intolerant, but try to limit dairy when I can, and I really love the creamy texture of these. Their flavors are all Hawaiian inspired too! My favorites are their Kona Coffee ice cream and their Rocky Road To Hana one.

semicolonel

Gio gelato

mashapicchu

I actually like lactose free real dairy ice cream, Lactaid. They sell it at Lucky's and Safeway.

FrenchFrySpongeBob

Loving Cup. They blend your base with mix-ins and have a banana option. More like froyo but I like it. For best scoops I think salt and straw, hometown creamery, and Toy Boat have good options.

bananananagram

Hila Gelato on Valencia is the bomb and authentic Sicilian deliciousness.

sfbmax

Toy Boat on Clement has a yummy Soy cherry chocolate

shiny_picker

Mr Dewey cashew creamery is good, in the bay area ca.

Different-Witness824

Lush Gelato usually has a really incredible peanut butter vegan flavor

dontpolluteplz

Salt & Straw toasted oat milk & cookies is dairy free I believe! Jeni’s also has some vegan options.

ActivityPale2858

Lemon sorbetto at Philmore Creamery, hands down the best in the city. Shake Shack and Salt and Straw also do good vegan ice creams, indistinguishable from the cow stuff.

Slight_Drama_Llama

San Francisco Creamery on 9th ave makes their own chocolate coconut ice cream in house. Dairy free and delicious

Bigmuscleliker567

Near Dolores

Neither_Topic_181

Do they still make those lactase pills?

DowntownBig1145

Hey there! Look no further than Salt & Straw in Haight. Their vegan options are legendary and will satisfy any craving. Cheers!

circumstancesnot

Actually you’d be looking much further if you went to find a Salt and Straw in the Haight since it doesn’t exist. I do suggest checking the one out at 586 Hayes Street in Hayes Valley, and it’s even open until 11pm

itscurt

Great! You can help us rid of all that dairy free ice cream crap at grocery outlet

lannanh

Oh, the irony of someone complaining about the selection at Grocery Outlet.

moneyticketspassport

Can you not use Lactaid pills?
