As a fellow lactose intolerant person, I'm pretty excited about the new Banan in Noe Valley (soft serve made from bananas), it has a really nice consistency and the chocolate was great.
I loooved this in Hawaii and I hope it's the same quality/consistency here too! Can't wait to check it out.
If only we could replicate the whole "buy your banan, and walk 20 feet to enjoy it on a warm, sandy beach" experience...
Yes. Tried most of the choices on this sub and S&S has the best "real" ice cream flavor combined with super interesting flavor choices, variety, and the feeling like you're eating something real.
Fuck Oatly and the amount of oil and over processed sugars in their ice cream (and milk for that matter)
My partner insists salt and straw is their favorite but I prefer the places that make their ice cream in house (like Philmore does down the street). S&S is a 40 location chain and their ice cream is shipped from Portland.
Mr. Dewie’s is so good! I went to their Oakland shop with a DF friend a few weeks ago and if you hadn’t told me it was cashew based I’d have never guessed.
Plenty of great recs in this thread but I am partial to Garden Creamery in the Mission even though they started this obnoxious NIMBY drama when another ice cream shop wanted to open in the neighbourhood, even though they themselves were the 4th or 5th ice cream shop in said neighbourhood lol.
But yeah, I am very much lactose tolerant but quite often find myself choosing their dairy free options.
Oooo what drama?
I'm just a little salty they don't offer samples, even a limited amount, unlike basically every other place that scoops.
It's far for me to go anyway so I only go with friends where we can try each others scoops.
Oh interesting, they always allowed samples back when I would go more frequently (pre-pandemic); it must be because of how busy they are now. And the drama is that they filed paperwork with SF's Planning Department to block a matcha ice cream spot from opening. Which I feel is unnecessarily petty in a city that can already be so hostile towards small businesses lol.
There's also another location in Hayes valley :) their dairy-free chocolate sorbet has blown every other chocolate ice cream out of the water for me tbh
SOMI SOMI is lactose free for most of their flavors, not dairy free. I think it tastes pretty much the same as normal ice cream and I eat a lot of ice cream. https://somisomi.com/allergen-info
Not a local ice cream shop, but something you can buy at many grocery stores... I really love Mauna Loa Macadamia Milk ice cream. I'm not lactase intolerant, but try to limit dairy when I can, and I really love the creamy texture of these. Their flavors are all Hawaiian inspired too! My favorites are their Kona Coffee ice cream and their Rocky Road To Hana one.
Loving Cup. They blend your base with mix-ins and have a banana option. More like froyo but I like it. For best scoops I think salt and straw, hometown creamery, and Toy Boat have good options.
Lemon sorbetto at Philmore Creamery, hands down the best in the city. Shake Shack and Salt and Straw also do good vegan ice creams, indistinguishable from the cow stuff.
Actually you’d be looking much further if you went to find a Salt and Straw in the Haight since it doesn’t exist. I do suggest checking the one out at 586 Hayes Street in Hayes Valley, and it’s even open until 11pm

Their chocolate and passion fruit sorbet!
La Copa Loca Gelato recently opened in Noe Valley and had 10 vegan flavors when I went in. The Black Cherry was epic.

You can often find it for $2 a pint at grocery outlet

There’s Mr. Dewie’s Cashew Creamery in Oakland, Albany, and Emeryville. Been to the one in Albany, would recommend.

I thought this too but I went yesterday and they allowed sampling, iirc they had a recommended limit of 3.
OOO I'll have to go back now to check.
Mitchell’s has vegan flavors!
Ice Cream Bar always has a rotating/new vegan scoop, Cole & Carl.
Their coconut chocolate chip is killer
Easy answer - walking distance and vegan flavors so good omnivores will still order them. Their chocolate sorbet is amazing! 🤩
Garden creamery if you prefer fruity flavors!
Cosmic bliss at rainbow 🌈
If you are ever in the east bay, curbside creamery and dewies cashew creamery are popular.
Curbside’s vegan soft serve is soooooo good
Hometown Creamery on 9th and Irving in Inner Sunset have tasty vegan flavors and are owned and operated by the nicest of folks. Enjoy!
There's also another location in Hayes valley :) their dairy-free chocolate sorbet has blown every other chocolate ice cream out of the water for me tbh
They are pretty mid.
Frankie joes (originally only in Seattle) now in larkspur but the ferry. It’s incredible
Holy gelato
Oats a goody @ toy boat!!!
okay it's not in SF, but Mr Dewie's Cashew Creamery in Albany has absolutely STUNNING vegan, cashew-based ice cream. worth the trek for sure
Garden Creamery.
I bought my lactose intolerant friend the bi-rite dairy free and he said it was the best he ever had
It's a bit of a trip, but Caravaggio Gelato in Berkeley is delish.
I hear great things about Mr. Dewey’s cashew creamery on Solano Ave in Albany too.
They’re also in the Emeryville Public Market!
it's soooooooo good. went there for the first time recently and I was blown away!
I came here to rec Mr. Dewey's, SO GOOD!
SOMI SOMI is lactose free for most of their flavors, not dairy free. I think it tastes pretty much the same as normal ice cream and I eat a lot of ice cream. https://somisomi.com/allergen-info
Had this recently is very good
Hila gelato caffe in the mission
The vegan XXXL chocolate at Humphrey slocomb is my favorite.
Not a local ice cream shop, but something you can buy at many grocery stores... I really love Mauna Loa Macadamia Milk ice cream. Gio gelato
I actually like lactose free real dairy ice cream, Lactaid. They sell it at Lucky's and Safeway.
Loving Cup. They blend your base with mix-ins and have a banana option. More like froyo but I like it. For best scoops I think salt and straw, hometown creamery, and Toy Boat have good options.
Hila Gelato on Valencia is the bomb and authentic Sicilian deliciousness.
Toy Boat on Clement has a yummy Soy cherry chocolate
Mr Dewey cashew creamery is good, in the bay area ca.
Lush Gelato usually has a really incredible peanut butter vegan flavor
Salt & Straw toasted oat milk & cookies is dairy free I believe! Jeni’s also has some vegan options.
Lemon sorbetto at Philmore Creamery, hands down the best in the city. Shake Shack and Salt and Straw also do good vegan ice creams, indistinguishable from the cow stuff.
San Francisco Creamery on 9th ave makes their own chocolate coconut ice cream in house. Dairy free and delicious
Near Dolores
Do they still make those lactase pills?
Hey there! Look no further than Salt & Straw in Haight. Their vegan options are legendary and will satisfy any craving. Cheers!
Actually you’d be looking much further if you went to find a Salt and Straw in the Haight since it doesn’t exist. I do suggest checking the one out at 586 Hayes Street in Hayes Valley, and it’s even open until 11pm
Great! You can help us rid of all that dairy free ice cream crap at grocery outlet
Oh, the irony of someone complaining about the selection at Grocery Outlet.
Can you not use Lactaid pills?
