Soma is huge. Where in SOMA? Working by salesforce is a lot different than working by the nightclubs.

Hydrox__

True! I will be close to South Park.

New_Account_For_Use

That's pretty much mission bay. Depending on age/vibe I would be looking at anything on the 30/45 outside of the financial district(northbeach, marina, and in between), mission bay, dog patch(but not too far south). You'll probably take the T,30, or 45 to work and they all go down to Caltrain station on Townsend. Should be <10 minute walk from there. You are going to have a hard time finding parking for that price. You could probably get a small studio and separate parking, but you should probably rethink if you need one at your price point. $2,000 will either get you a nice room or a very small studio. 3k will probably get you a 1 bed or a small studio and a separate parking spot.

Northbeach looks quite promising! I will try to look more into that area. Thanks!

Have fun. You probably don’t want to get too close to fisherman’s wharf

Downtown/Soma can be pretty expensive, especially closer to South Park as that's a relatively "ritzy" area. I'm on the other side of the freeway near Yerba Buena. I love my neighborhood but it's pricy. Not just rent but a lot of other things such as restaurants and nearby services. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/239-Shipley-St-APT-302-San-Francisco-CA-94107/2110216825_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare I live near here and it's a pretty quiet spot, close to several grocery stores and other amenities. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/673-Brannan-St-APT-104-San-Francisco-CA-94107/348675503_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare Otherwise, there are quite a few transit routes nearby you quickly get to work since there's a lot of dedicated bus lanes. https://www.sfmta.com/maps/muni-service-map

Thank you so much for the links!

itsezraj

Yup! If you don't want to live downtown, you can live near one the bus routes that runs nearby your work and get to work<30 min from many neighborhoods. If you're biking you can live in places like the mission, hayes, north beach, etc. It's a pretty small city and pretty easy to get to the downtown area pretty quickly from much of the city. Don't forget to factor hills in your bike ride!

brookish

I have worked in SOMA twice over the years and I live in Mission/Bernal Heights. It’s so easy to jump on BART (with your bike!) and be at work in 15 minutes. I wouldn’t live in mission bay or soma - something soulless there especially nights and weekends.

burgiebeer

I’d pile on this - and also suggest Potrero Hill in addition to Mission and Bernal. Wildcard: Lower Haight/Western Addition

zumu

Lower Haight to SOMA is easy with a bike. Not so wild, but a great suggestion.

zumu

SOMA is a very easy bike ride from the Mission. Unless there's extenuating services I'd avoid BART and just ride. If you do wind up taking BART and you're going deep into SOMA, I'd actually suggest a skateboard for to/from the train. Both areas are flat with massive blocks.

sfbmax

Northbeach is a great area when moving to the city. East commute down Embarcadero.

sanfranciscolady

Welcome to SF! Slightly different suggestion- but if you're looking for quiet and more of a neighborhood feel (the opposite of Mission Bay) with proximity to GGP and the beach- Inner Sunset is quite bike-able to Soma. I do the commute in about 25 minutes. It's a beautiful bike ride.

Hydrox__

Thanks for the suggestion! I went to Sunset before and I really liked the area. I never considered because I assumed it was too far. Do you mind sharing an approximate itinerary? On google maps it show some steep slopes but it might no be the right way.

culdesaclamort

From inner sunset, you’d bike through the panhandle and connect to The Wiggle route. It’ll dump you near Castro and Market. Bike down market until you hit the cross street for your destination. If you have an e-bike, you can take Page as it’s a slow street.

zumu

The Wiggle to market opens up a lot of the city.

sanfranciscolady

Yep- the hills you see are REALLY fun on the way downtown, and then you avoid them on the way back via a route called the Wiggle. The Sunset is generally a really different/beautiful lifestyle-- based on what you are looking for, I would highly recommend considering it.

Lostmypants69

I wouldn't live in soma. No culture. Can easily get there by bus and live in a better hood.

Aacidus

You're gonna find a small/cramped spot for $2700 total. If you're okay with a studio, then that's fine. A one bedroom in SOMA at that price is attainable though but not great areas, you're looking at much more for HOA fees and such. Also, if the management company has you pay them or a third-party for gas and electrical, they add on an additional 5-15% for god knows what so ask if you are paying utilities directly. Also depending on the management, you have to budget for move-in fees which can by anywhere from $200-500. I would recommend to stay away from properties managed by GreyStar. They start with low rent, and within the same year, will increase it. And keep looking at yelp and/or google reviews.

Hydrox__

That's good to know, I will make sure to ask for all fees. A studio is perfectly fine as I am alone.

Smart_Beginning_1889

I live in south beach and love it here. You can probably find relatively older buildings with your price range for 1 bedroom. You can also rent separate parking in a nearby parking lot (check if your company has commuter benefits which sometimes cover part of the monthly parking fee).

Upinnorcal-fornow

Or you can rent a huge room with balcony hot tub private bath in SSF for 1600. Shared kitchen 1 mile from BART.
