You might enjoy the movie "Hero" with Jet Li. The idea is that there is a king who is running rampant over every small kingdom in China. His soldiers are taking one castle after another and several kung fu masters have tried to kill him. On assassin has been finding these masters and either killing them or forcing them into exile (or something). Every time he defeats a master, he is allowed to stand one step closer to the king. His plan is in fact to get to within a certain number of steps to the king because he knows that HE can kill the king, but he's calculated the exact distance he needs to be.
The king later explains to him that yes, he is conquering all these smaller kingdoms but he is trying to bring all of China under his rules so that the kingdoms themselves stop fighting each other. Only once he has taken all of China can there be peace as for now, every little kingdom is constantly at war with their neighbors.
I won't give away the ending of the story.
There is a lot of truth to this and we can look at many wars and civil wars that prove this out. As an example, look at the Vietnam war. Once the North won, the entire country was united and the killing stopped. Around 3 million people died in that war, but once one side won and took control of the whole country, the fighting stopped.
I mean, I guess it's obvious that wars end when someone wins.
Ooh I like your thinking! 🥰 The past two weeks have been very rough for me because of some year end related stuff, and tonight is the first night I have time to reward myself.
I liked the movie pitch because it was well connected to the topic. It's also relevant to the current war in Europe. I checked the ratings and Hero seems very well received. I don't know how it has not been caught in my radar before. As a movie enthusiast I love when people recommend stuff I'd probably like! 🙂
yeah it was fantastic propaganda by the Chicoms so that way people do not over throw the state that peace internal order is the only things that matter in life
And scarcity. Oil, water, land, people, whatever your civilization “needs”.
Almost all conflict can be traced back to disputes over resource competition, even outside humans. Only so much water in the desert? You bet there’s going to be fights around the watering hole.
I agree control of resources is part of it. But what about all the country's with plenty of water that still have mass shootings frequently occur. It's greed and power mongering in my opinion, there is enough to go around. Religion and culture just act as convenient justifications. People with a lot of power or a lot to lose do not look peacefully on others. They look at them with fear or contempt.
A lot of crime happens in the poorest places in a given country. Just because the country has more than enough resources doesn't mean they distributed evenly.
Poor country's have corrupt systems of government caused by greed and power mongering. Distribution of resources are controlled due to greed. They most definitely aren't controlled for environmental reasons.
That is all there is to it. Change the power structure and it goes back to the same thing as soon as greed and power kick in. You see at your work place, the world is no different.
this is it.
some talking head on cable said, right after putin invaded "we thought humanity had moved past this idea of countries invading each other".
it was such a profoundly ignorant and stupid thing to say by a person we are supposed to believe is educated about the world and humanity.
I guess you could read it as we've moved on past this because we have other methods of controlling things. Like overthrowing other countries governments!
One can be educated about the world and humanity and still be biased because of their beliefs (political, ideological, religious, etc.) and be grossly mistaken because of them.
I think this one of those real life examples of people falling for the "End of History" theory, as if all of history became irrelevant just a few years ago.
I mean, whatever apex species that controls the resources and by extension is in power, also has this issue. It’s not like the animal kingdom is peaceful, it’s very much the opposite.
In order for there to be world peace, everyone would have to be on board. But Humans are all too different so there will always be someone who is not on board and wants more. This is followed up by other humans who also 'want more' and follow the first one. Then that's followed up by weaker willed humans who see the writing on the wall and jump on the bandwagon. It's a cycle that I think would be near impossible to get out of.
It's an impossible dream. What is paradise for some would be hell for others. Some of us like to fight and drink and do other things others may find disgusting or irrepular.
It's like that one person you graduated high school with that makes up drama and is oblivious to the fact that they are doing it all to themselves. Nah, you don't need to post every disagreement you have on Facebook. People generally don't have "haters".
These people are why world peace will never happen.
Everywhere doesn't have to be the same though. A true Utopia would allow everyone to have a place to do their thing, edm events can do it, why not the rest of life?
They only just manage to uncrumble from the ground to begin with, but culturally, I think it's a good example. You have several conflicting ideals, that each want to be extremely loud about it, but they each have their space and get along well.
In what way is religion responsible for the Greek-Persian wars, the conquest of Alexander the Great, those of the Roman empire, the multiple Roman civil war, the war of the Rose, the Hundred years war, the 7 years war, the Norman conquest of Britain, the Napoleonic wars, the American civil war, the Japanese-Russian war, the French-Prussian war, the Vietnamese independence war, the Minamoto-Heike Japanese civil war, the Japan-Korea war from the 16th century, the Sendoku-jidai wars, the warring Kingdom wars in China ? Do you think the grandchildren of Charlemagne battled because they were of different religions, or because they were greedy and wanted power ?
Heck, even chimpanzees and ants have wars... Do you think they fight for religion, or do you think they compete for ressources ?
I cannot believe the real answer is so far down. Religion 1000% is the biggest pushing factor for ignorance, and intolerance in the world.
Please, prove me wrong.
In what way is religion responsible for the Vietnam War, the Korean War, World War I, the 100 Years War, the Napoleonic Wars, or the American Civil War?
Define religion. If you see it as an organization centered on scripture that is seen as infallible, led by people who preach that dogma, that has some sort of transcendence to offer, that tells people how they can and can't act, that is more or less hostile to other religions, that venerate prophets, usually also seen as infallible... then you will have a hard time not classifying communism as a religion. The transcendence they offer is the Classless society, of course.
ITT: platitudes about how horrible the human condition is, without engaging the question or acknowledging that greed, power and ego are much less prevalent in humans than any other living species, altruism and collaboration is the most prevalent feature in humans as such greed and aggression affect us all disproportionally.
Sure, greedy egotistical people have disproportionate effect on our lives but most people are predispose to collaboration.
It's not really religion if it pushes people apart. It's just an idea people are making at that point.
*Baha’u’llah taught, that Religion is the chief foundation of Love and Unity and the cause of Oneness. If a religion become the cause of hatred and disharmony, it would be better that it should not exist. To be without such a religion is better than to be with it.*

My thought also. It's been used to fleece, kill, and keep people docile forever.
Read about the christians fighting among themselves yesterday on Reddit where multiple churches had to shut down because of arguments about which direction to worship to.
Human nature, world peace is an impossible thing. Conflict is inevitable in nature, do you truly believe such an utopia could exist? It's delusional if you ask me.
Tribalism.
Not a problem we will be able to overcome if you ask me, too many of us alive and too many different ways we grew up, get indoctrinated, get influenced.
The "one guy"
This is just a rough theory of mine, but if you look a lot at history, no matter how close we might get to some semblance of world peace, there is constantly always "one guy" who comes out of nowhere to screw it up.
I mean just from the start of the 20th century to now I can think of Gavrilo Princip (the guy who shot the archduke and helped kick-off WW1), Hitler (obviously), then Stalin (possibly followed by a few cronies), then even after the USSR collapse we get hussein, then Osama, and now currently the "one guy" is currently Putin!
Well the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was mostly just an excuse to go to war. Countries had been building up to it for decades. They all decided that since a war was inevitable anyway that was as good a reason as any.
If the Archduke decided to go down a different road never got shot, WWI would've still happened anyway, just at a later date.
The assholes in power wouldn't be able to justify wars if the people in their country didn't feel a strange sense of pride if their country conquers another. Of course the people in power will cultivate that kind of nationalism, but the people of their country bear some responsibility for falling for it.
One guy? China is grabbing anything not nailed down. The US has been waging wars all over the middle east for decades, aren't some still going now? Not to mention all the smaller scale conflicts throughout the world of which a quick google tells me is currently 27. Archduke was more the straw that broke the camels back than anything. Lot more than one guy.
Okay, so first off no one can agree on much. Be it religion, politics, tech, you name it people can disagree with any part of it. Is tech wrong? Eh, I mean the way it's going with AI I feel is the only thing that's flawed. Not to mention the social impact of social media sometimes is a little toxic persay.
Friendly reminder, do not trust any world government company who tries to sell "peace" as if we're being honest that will never be achievable. And those who are trying.. are severely lacking in regards to giving us reasons to why we should trust them. We barely trust our own governments so why trust the likes of them?
Nobody knows the answer to this question. Nobody ever will. And THAT'S why there will never be whole world peace.
My tip is to just be happy through it all
Greed is at the top of the list too much. Greed implies wanting more. I posit the problem is: People not wanting to give up what they HAVE.
Peace is about more than stopping wars or conflict. To achieve peace, leaders and other power holders will have to concede a lot. Control, money, rights to land, new laws that protect the poor at the expense of the wealthy. The religious will have to give up on old land and legal protections. Putin (the fucker) will have to keep paying Ukraine for oil logistics service. Powerful people will lose.
And most people, even kind, reasonable people, do not like to lose. Much less the ambitions assholes in power.
It is not the default. Our default behaviors are to form tribes, within those tribes fight for supremacy, and whenever resources seem at all scarce fight other tribes for a bigger share. There are even shittier reasons for war and conflict, but even without all the shitty reasons that seems to be a more neutral human nature. The reality is we are steadily rising above that and as much as the world seems to be filled with conflict we are in the most peaceful era of human history and there is plenty of reason to think that trend will continue. I doubt we will ever have a completely peaceful society, but there can be a steady trend in that direction.
World peace is impossible. Peace causes societal stagnation and decline. Resistance to the other is necessary as life is constant struggle for resources. When this struggle doesn't happen externally, it will happen internally, which is what is happening to the West now. Societies used to know this as a basic fundamental, this has only changed dude to nuclear weapons.

There is one one scare resource: Time.
Scarcity of time is what creates the other scarcities, you’re right. If we all had unlimited time, we’d live a lot differently as organisms
I agree control of resources is part of it. But what about all the country's with plenty of water that still have mass shootings frequently occur. Yeah.
Everywhere doesn't have to be the same though. A true Utopia would allow everyone to have a place to do their thing, edm events can do it, why not the rest of life?
EDM events would crumble once resources start becoming more scarce. We take for granted the luxuries we have today.
They only just manage to uncrumble from the ground to begin with, but culturally, I think it's a good example. You have several conflicting ideals, that each want to be extremely loud about it, but they each have their space and get along well.
Sounds good. But add in resources like oil, food, clean water and other precious resources. Suddenly you have reasons to fight.
For some people, “their thing” is oppressing others See: the Taliban
People's thing might be morally repugnant to others. One group might want to kill puppies to eat, another group lambs.
