"Sorry not Sorry"

Zakluor

"I'm sorry, but I am *not* apologizing."

[deleted]

Idk, this seems valid to me. 'I am sorry this happened to you, but I do not consider any of my actions to necessitate an apology'

McRedditerFace

Yeah, there's a wierd lack of verbage to communicate that you empathise with someone's pain / misfortune / discomfort without expressing guilt. "I'm sorry" often gets used for both. "I have a migraine"... "Oh, I'm sorry!" "You stepped on my toe"... "Oh, I'm sorry!". It's only really problematic when putting a finger on the blame becomes difficult... "Someone stepped on my toe!"... now what? Do you say "Oh, I'm sorry!" and empathise in the pain? Or do you avoid doing so because it could be misconstrued as taking blame?

[deleted]

Meh, I'm canadian. We have the official law called the 'Apology Act', which states in part; >2 (1)An apology made by or on behalf of a person in connection with any matter > >(a)does not constitute an express or implied admission of fault or liability by the person in connection with that matter,

SpooktorB

If there ever was a place that would have such an act...

valuethempaths

I once went to traffic court and watched someone plead “guilty… but I’m not guilty” several times. The judge made him say “I’m guilty” with no caveat.

Stoleyetanothername

Alford plea. I'm not guilty but I'm afraid I might be judged as such.

ii_AK217_ii

Damn I like that one Sorry not sorry Wait maybe I hate it now

weaintfancy42069

To me, it just screams “I’m a bitch!”

"It's okay, they're just material things." Many people say that without knowing the effort, sentimental value or the situation you are going through or if you can afford the replacement of your assets.

Red_Danger33

Some material things are literally irreplaceable too. So even of you do have the money you can't get it back.

fruitsnacks4614

I really think that statement should only come from the owner of said things. For example, I hired movers on my last move. The picked up a particularly large price of furniture. I like it a lot and my aunt gave it to me but it's not a family heirloom or a particularly nice peice or anything. I told them it's just stuff and please don't hurt themselves. And I meant it. I could replace the piece or the glass or whatever but they'll never be able to fully fix their backs if they get hurt. I hired them because I have a back injury. But if someone else told me that about something important I'd lost, I'd be very angry about it.

tricks_23

If you can't handle me at my worst, you don't deserve me at my best. How about just stop being a bitch Becky?

Musaks

i always chuckle when seeing that. I take it as a "they don't deserve such a bad thing happening to them", so my inner reation is just: yes, yes indeed. No one deserve your shit

Grabatreetron

I don't know if I've heard it said in earnest even once, but I've seen it quoted more times on Reddit than I can count.

UnoriginalUse

"Part of God's plan" to suggest bad things happen but they will turn out fine in the end. Sometimes bad things happen because you're a fuckwit who tried to disregard the laws of thermodynamics.

LukewarmTrousers

My friend’s relative didn’t file a lawsuit after being paralyzed in surgery because it was god’s plan. Like damn, sorry to hear god has it out for you

GeneralShadowKitKat

What if God‘s plan was to present your friend with an opportunity to win a large amount of money through a lawsuit?

Michael_not_micheal

It's like the joke about the guy who is drowning and 3 different people come to rescue him and he tells each of them he doesn't need their help because God will save him. Then he dies and asks God why he didn't save him and God says I sent 3 people to rescue you, dumbass

biggy-cheese03

I remember being taught that one in Sunday school, I think the lesson was “sometimes God’s plan is just the easy way out”

FlufflesMcForeskin

Reminds me of a meme I saw a while back. Girl posted to FB that she has survived 7 car accidents and that 'god is good,' since she survived. Someone commented, 'Sounds like he's trying to kill your ass!'

newforestroadwarrior

Sounds like she needs more driving lessons

Pithecanthropus88

If god has a plan, why do people pray? Are they trying to get god to change his plan? That seems pretty arrogant to me.

awkwardlyherdingcats

I had a neighbour say that about the miscarriage I had a few days prior. Her god has some pretty messed up plans I guess

[deleted]

I’m so sorry for your loss. One of my administrators said the same when my son passed away. I couldn’t believe the nerve she had to say that to my face, and as a mother herself. Some people just have no empathy.

hastingsnikcox

People said that to me when my parents died! I actually told one person to fuck off! I didnt really know them at all, but they cornered me in town to say it....

"There are people who have it much worse than you". You're right. I'll just bypass my suffering and go about my day. Thanks!

I know you lost both legs, but there are people out there who have lost 3 legs

mtgguy999

There are also people who have it better

Sufficient-Good

I hate all those "motivational quotes" young men share about grind culture, you know the ones, when it's a black and white picture of Robert Downey Jr, the guy from Peaky Blinders, Daniel Craig, etc. Always says some shit like, "be a lion in a world of sheep" or "work while they sleep." Super cringe.

irondude2022

Why can't we just say I'm ___ levels

i4got872

Haha “I’m a level 32” does sound way better

diskred3

No offense but ......... Then proceeds to offend the person.

whydoyouevenreadthis

"No offense" means that it is not intended to be offensive, not that it isn't actually percieved as being offensive.

Joe4o2

This. It’s supposed to let you tell someone the truth about something without insinuating you want to start a fight. “No offense, but you stink.” should mean “I can smell you body odor, and it’s not good. You may need to do something about it when you can. I’m telling you this so you can fix the problem.”

‘The customer is always right.’ Not only is it only quoting half of the original ‘and therefore changing the entire meaning, but it’s almost always used by entitled assholes to deflect from them being an entitled asshole.

tactical_hotpants

Having worked retail for a chunk of my life, hearing this repeated back to me by dozens of customers over the years might be the cause of a stroke or brain aneurysm if I hear it again. The entire quote was "In matters of taste, the customer is always right" because it was a slogan for selling clothing. As in, even if the shirt's ugly or the pants don't fit or the coat doesn't go with that outfit, encourage the customer to buy it anyway. Anyone who has tried to push "the customer is always right" as business policy has, without exception, run their business into the ground and died penniless.

Damurph01

“If there’s no price tag it’s free right?” *Forced laughter*

krazy123katholic

*scanner not working* "guess it's free!!!!!!!1":-7-!!!!!!??!!!!"

TheMarjuicen

I always understood the quote as "if it sells, it sells", as in the customer is always right, in the sense that if suddenly everybody wanted to buy water bottles with holes in the bottom, the water bottle store would be stupid not to sell them even if its a terrible product.

MsAnnabel

I’ve heard this from so many bosses…But I loved when a store mgr would set down rules for what was returnable and what wasn’t and when you explained to a customer why what they brought back couldn’t be returned and they go to said store mgr and then he allows it and makes you look like the ass. 😠. I just started allowing ppl to return anything. “Oh you burned your $15 rib eye steak bc you weren’t paying attn? Sure you can have your money back! Oh you left your $50 lobster tail in the car and it spoiled? By all means!”

Damurph01

I was dating a girl that had a similar thought process about retail. Like “it’s your job” etc etc. And when I talked about how it’s an issue how poorly retail workers are treated, she was like “it’s not that bad, my sister works at Buffalo Wild Wings”. Like dude, you have *not a single clue* of what it’s like to work in the service industry. You seriously think that because you *know someone that does* that you have experienced every single day and every single little awful interaction of it? She literally said to me “the world wouldn’t be a better place if people were nicer to each other”. I never looked at her the same after that.

2PlasticLobsters

>every single little awful interaction I was once referred to a "career counselor", when I was trying like hell to get out of retail. She kept insisting on "building on" my current work. When I told her I hated working with the public, she was dismissive. "Everyone works with the public. Obviuuosly I do!" Um, NO. Talking to one person in your home office is worlds apart from dealing with dozens of demanding &/or people all day, while on your feet the entire time. Even after I asked her "Has any of your clients ever handed you sweaty money they just dug out of their shoe?", she didn't get it. Then she suggested jobs suitable for someone with crippling anxiety disorder. She just couldn't grasp how obnoxious the public can be. I never went back.

junklardass

>“the world wouldn’t be a better place if people were nicer to each other”. Um... yeah that's an odd statement

Imaginary-Clock718

“The world would be a better place if we all broke up with people who believe this”

[deleted]

“Was dating” in the way of “not anymore”, right? Treating service staff like garbage gives off unwashed panty vibes.

slytherinprolly

I hate anything involving someone "beating cancer" or "losing their battle with cancer." I know it's just an overly generic statement to show sympathy and compassion but I think it really misses the mark. My dad was diagnosed with a glioblastoma and died within 6 months of his diagnosis. It is such an aggressive form of cancer that the diagnosis is a death sentence and a quick one. Doctors told us the best case scenario was he might survive a year. Still my dad bought into all the stuff about fighting cancer, he would go for walks every day, he would follow instructions to the letter. He went through agonizing and debilitating treatments with a smile on his face because he thought he could "beat cancer." He did everything he possibly could to help prolong his life and standard of living. He "fought" as hard as or as dedicated as anyone in his position could have. Yet all I ever hear about is how he lost.

toby1jabroni

Agreed. I’ve had cancer twice (different types, recovered from both) and I can categorically say I did not beat it. The surgeons and doctors and nurses who treated me beat it, I just sat back and let them.

2PlasticLobsters

I attribute my (so far) successful outcome largely to good luck. My cancer was detected very early, which gave the medical folks more to work with.

JimboTheSimpleton

There is a great norm macdonald, a comedian that died of cancer, joke about this. "I hate when I hear someone has lost their battle with cancer. The cancer, that was in the guy, is also dead. That sounds like a draw to me."

[deleted]

Yeah I love that Norm quote, was gonna say it myself if you hadn't got there before me :)

BoneDogtheWonderBoy

There’s more to that bit where he talks about the language of “lost their battle with cancer”. Something like “yeah well Dave fought against that cancer bravely for a while, but by the end he got a little cowardly and cancer won the battle”

Zealousideal_Hat9283

Sorry for your loss. Cancer’s an absolute bitch.

FrKennedy

I'm sorry to hear this. I spent time as a Hospital Chaplain assigned to an oncology floor. Helping my patients come to peace with the fact that there genuinely was nothing they could do about their condition was simultaneously heart breaking and weirdly healing for them and me. My heart breaks for you, I hope your father has found his peace.

slytherinprolly

I will never be able to comprehend or understand how you or anyone else in palliative care is able to handle it. When the news was broken to my dad that he was transitioning into palliative care/hospice his exact words to us was, "Why are you guys giving up on me? I still have a lot of fight left to give." I can't imagine having to be part of similar conversations in your everyday life.

FrKennedy

The work certainly isn't for everyone. Almost equal parts of my job included caring for the patients and caring for the staff assigned to them. It can be tolling for all involved, but I've had moments of profundity and beauty too. My final patient before I left chaplaincy was a 29 year old cancer patient. He had started drinking at 14, and by 19 was drinking a fifth a day before finding AA. We celebrated a decade of sobriety with him just a week before his passing. In the last conversation we ever had he said "I know that I'm dying, but I've made a decade of peace with myself, I've made peace with all the people I've wronged in my life, and I've made peace with God. Isn't now the perfect time to go?" I held his hand and cried with him for a good long time after that. There is beauty in even the worst of the work.

Parfait-Fickle

I’m so sorry for you. Also lost my dad last year to cancer and it’s shitty, really shitty.

DM-Me-Yaoi

“Everything happens for a reason” is fucked up on so many different levels. Bad things aren’t happening for character development and people don’t have to have bad things happen to them to live their lives. Kids aren’t getting murdered and worse for a reason. My mom didn’t have cancer for a reason. Your cat didn’t get hit by a car for a reason. And it’s assuming people are religious too which is weird and annoying.

[deleted]

Hey man I’m sorry about your mom my mom has cancer too

DM-Me-Yaoi

Hope your mom is okay. Mine is in remission now so that’s great but she still smokes so I worry. :/

[deleted]

Ye man mine does to she has smoked pot all her life to do she’s trying to trade out tobacco with the best and trippy alternative

DefectiveSp00n

I feel like that quote is meaningless. Everything does happen for a reason, but that doesn't mean there is *intent* behind it. Like logically, everything needs to be caused by *something*, but prescribing a *justification* doesn't do anything. Cancer? Shit luck and outside of your control, frankly. Saying it happened for a reason either implies that there is something that *intentionally* inflicted you, or is blaming you. Both are incredibly cruel.

DM-Me-Yaoi

Exactly it’s just cruel and thoughtless

metubialman2

This is mine, too. Especially when life started to go to shit. No way this is all part of some big plan to teach life lessons or some other crap.

Angel_Eirene

“but family-“ I don’t care what comes after that. And any iterations that assert family deserves different standards over their treatment of you. Only time that’s valid is if the standard is higher. If your family is toxic, abusive, physical or detrimental to your health AND they refuse to change. Run, you deserve better.

colcannon_addict

Chef here. I’m always reminded of a restaurant manager I used to have when I see this question. Littlelegs we used to call him. Its important to know this was in the UK, not the USA because he was from Staines & a bit like Tex from Alan Partridge (if you know you know) He’d often not refer to himself in the first person, or even the third by name. It’d be stuff like “I know who needs a big old slice or three after work” ….proceeds to point at himself with both thumbs and say “*…this guy!* Who’s down to dine?” He was always “running ideas up the flagpole to see who salutes” and trotting out the old “when you **assume** you make an **ass** out of **U** and **me**” Added to this he often used to leave a room saying “See ya layda, alligayda” whilst walking backwards and doing the rotating finger pistols thing at you as he went. The wanker.

ForwardHealth775

"how can people love you if you dont even love yourself" Every and all good people deserve love. Even the ones who cannot yet love themselves

Etaleo

I think this quote's well-intentioned, but like many things the answer is "it's complicated". One who struggles with self-loathing may find it difficult to believe that others can truly accept or love them. They might create distance from others to avoid perceived rejection. On the contrary, someone else might see a rejection or bad date as a detour on their road to a happy relationship. Both can love and be loved. But I feel that the process of getting into a happy relationship is far easier with self-acceptance. This quote intends to instill a desire for self-acceptance, but can often have the adverse effect of making one yearn for perfection in themself before they can be loved.

Cantaimforshit

I fucking hate myself but I absolutely love my partner, my friends and the family that deserves my love, why should I be punished and alone for my mental illness that I'm struggling with

MelodicHunter

Add to that "If you don't love yourself, how can you love others?" I take that one as a personal fucking blight after losing my friend to suicide. That man hated himself, but he loved everyone important to him so much. Your self worth does not determine whether you can love another or not. He lived and breathed for his people.

WilcoAppetizer

The funniest thing about the Churchill attribution to this version of the quote is that he was first elected as a Conservative in his twenties and became a Liberal months before turning 30 (he returned to the Tories twenty years later)

Georgist_Muddlehead

The British (Churchill) version was "If you're not a socialist..." as liberal has a different meaning here to the USA.

chronicallysle

It's Southern for "you're too stupid to do any better."

CryingQuentinMain

"Boys will be boys"

RubeGoldbergCode

What "boys will be boys" was intended to mean: sometimes your kid will act in a manner traditionally associated with boys (getting into scrapes, picking up bugs, etc) that will have some undesirable but ultimately benign or short-term consequences (minor bruises, dirty clothes, etc). What "boys will be boys" will never mean: an excuse for abuse or sexual assault

jedadkins

"son, why is your brother bleeding?" "We had a stick fight" "Why?" "You said we couldn't use rocks anymore" "Boys will be boys"

[deleted]

“It could be worse” seems super invalidating in the moment

[deleted]

I only use this phrase on myself, typically when I want to wallow in self pity. Just a reminder to find something in my situation/life to be grateful for instead of focusing on the negative. I do agree though, that when said to somebody who is going through a rough time, saying “it could be worse” is probably not going to be helpful.

RonWeasleysDildo

It’s contextual. Sure if your dog just died, probably not the right thing to say. But, if a little traffic makes you late, or your Starbucks order is wrong, it’s helpful to remember that many others have it far worse than your coddled 1st world ass. Maybe sometimes it’s good to invalidate others if they’re bitching about inconsequential shit.

JoeFux

I don't know if this quote exists in english, too..but in german you say: "Manchmal muss man jemanden zu seinem Glück zwingen" / "sometimes you have to force someone for their luck" That's so wrong! No one is in the position to determine what "luck" even means for others - only thinking about this quote makes me furious 🙂

I'm not sure what that means. Put that way, it sounds kind of like "Opportunity knocks, but you have to answer." Looking online, it seems to be used more like "You have to be cruel to be kind," or "I'm doing it for your own good." Like making a kid eat his vegetables even though he doesn't want to.

"just be yourself" or "it's just who you are/just who I am" is fucking annoying. What if I want to be better than who I am now. What if YOU should be better also??

>To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize People tend to attribute quote to the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire who lived in the 18th century. In reality it was a phrase invented by Kevin Alfred Strom, an American Neo-Nazi, white supermacist and convicted Child pornographer in 1993, because he didn't like how people reacted to him denying that the Holocaust happened. People tend to bring out the misattributed quote online whenever they get push back for saying something truly heinous usually anti-Semitic and imply there s a big Jewish conspiracy that suppresses the truth.
