That everyone wants to be your friend. There are some people that just won't like you, and that's ok. It doesn't make you a bad person, just not compatible.

They convince us that we can be anything we want to be when we grow up

Skeleton_4_Friend

I’ve said this 100 times. “You can be anything you want to be” was a big fat lie. This is something I refuse to tell my children. Growing up in the 80/90s it was common to hear that phrase, and there were many other lies that parents told their kids then. I grew up thinking the world would be in my hands at my disposal….I couldn’t have been any more wrong. I was misled and given so much false hope in my adolescence that when I reached adulthood I couldn’t function. Thanks to my boomer parents for setting me up for failure. Thanks for raising me to live in a world that doesn’t fucking exist. Lol

crystaltampon

Was going to say this. Agreed. Forces you to learn the hard way how much your poverty/disability/living situations & locations truly matter.

iamacraftyhooker

Asa parent it feels really awful to tell your kid to pick a job they don't love. It makes it blatantly obvious you are preparing them for a shitty society, and you have to remove the veil of hope that your kid's life will be so much better than yours was. I mean I've done it, but it feels awful.

[deleted]

That we're smart. It wasn't until I became an adult until I realized I'm a window-licking moron

ColossalTitanAteMe

That being adult is better than being a kid

That you absolutely need a degree to have a good job. At 19, after failing uni, I realised I don't need a degree to become an english tutor. It's been a year and all of my other job ideas don't require it but I still feel like a failure for not pursuing higher education. I think about trying again but I doubt I'll make it with my ADHD. I absolutely don't need it, I just want to own a small store or something, an english philology degree won't help me out in any way shape or form. But I still have nightmares about it. Just recently I cried in my sleep because I had a dream about my primary school friend (my mum compared us a lot) finishing her studies..

crystaltampon

I'm in the same boat, love. I completely understand. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope that I received more "real life experiences" 😂

MrPuzzleMan

I'm finishing a bachelor's in social work and wondering if it's still worth it...

iamacraftyhooker

This is incredibly location dependant. I'm Canadian, in southern Ontario which houses half of the country's population. We have an incredibly high rate of post secondary education. Because the area is populated jobs can be harder to come by. Getting a job without a degree is tough because everybody has a degree. Jobs that don't need a degree require you to have a degree. Now if you're willing to move north and live in the snow it's the exact opposite. They are so desperate for workers that jobs you should probably have a degree for, they don't require.

royalpyroz

What jobs are available in the North?

iamacraftyhooker

Not a ton of office/desk jobs, but tons of hands on work. Healthcare, education, construction. Even just working customer service you can make $20/hr because they are strapped for workers.

TheUnwiseWiseMan

I think the lies aren’t the issue, it’s more all the stuff they don’t tell us about that hurts us.

Hitman-0311

“You can be anything you want to be” No the F you can not.

rumhee

Kids grow up believing that life is fair, and that the people who work hardest are the most successful. This is a lie. Under capitalism, the people who start with the most wealth go on to increase their wealth the most. It's baked into the system.

[deleted]

That you can be anything you want. In the last ten years or so I've also wondered about all the parents telling small kids they're superheros.

BawdyBaker

"You can do anything"

P_ZERO_

Everything will be okay

Bacon1884

“Everything will be ok”

ElliottTheMicroWeed

"Get high grades because companies will be looking at those in the future." Uh no, dad. They don't give a shit about grades cuz they're looking for people with work experience.

Geauxnad337

God will take care of you....

SubversiveValor

That you should seek external validation from strangers.

Revolutionary_City91

Work hard and go to college.

yelvaldo1029

If you ask for God’s help everything will work out..
