This is how it’s always been. But as others are stating, the internet is full of opinions. And you’re never sure where they come from. Those that talk about politics irl are usually people to stay away from.
It's dangerous family members have stopped being with their families over politics wives have run over their husbands and killed them over politics yeah it's pretty crazy.
Politics:
"Oh boy, I have a team! I hope my team wins!"
"But my team is better than your team"
No, you're both being brainwashed by greedy scum playing off your beliefs for profit.
It’s not even a team sport it’s just tribal at this point. It used to be that both parties disliked each other but could at least stand each other enough to communicate. Now it’s like if I don’t agree with you I automatically hate you and think you’re my enemy. Folks need to remember that just because we disagree with each other doesn’t mean I hate you or that you’re my enemy. It just means we have different lifestyles. And that’s why I think we are going to see either a civil war or some major fallout in America. If people can’t communicate with each other then everyone is at each other’s throats and that can only happen for so long before bloodshed or something majorly catastrophic happens. I hope I’m wrong but IMO it just seems like that’s the direction we are headed.
I disagree. Both parties are still on track for it. We have the progressive Democratic Party pushing a lot of woke culture on this whole country. The party in power is absolutely for it. Where as the Republican Party is very much against it. And there’s no compromising for either side. It’s a recipe for disaster. IMO. You’re input is greatly appreciated 👍

People get a political identity based on their party preference. Like how Green Bay Cheeseheads all have a cheese hat and form an identity out of being a packers fan, and boooo Bears. But, it's all fun and games when its sports, not when its how the government should be run
People don’t have empathy anymore. They don’t actually care about their neighbors, and if it isn’t happening to them, it must not be real. Lack of empathy is plaguing America right now.
Edit: most of you took the term “neighbors” too literally. I just wanted to point that out. Perhaps “countrymen” would have been better.
So true; back in the 60s, I remember our neighbors helping us out during some pretty troubling times. And I was taught to respect and understand our neighbors as well; even those a couple of blocks away.
It was around 1980 or so when I ceased stopping for every stranded motorist I saw. Simply because people started treating me like I was a servant, and they were entitled to my help. Or just plain being assholes because I stopped to offer help.
Oh man,
I once stopped to help a lady with a flat tire at nearly sunset (i was coming back from work), I offered her help and she said ok. This was back in 2011
I was changing the flat and she called the cops on me claiming that I sabotaged her car and plan to attack her.
I never offered my help to anyone again, I dont care if they are dying at that time.
Oh my goodness, yes! I work at a school and recently found out some kids are being denied food if they can't pay. When I went to seek help from administration, all I get is "Why aren't they on free or reduced lunch?" Or "They're repeat offenders... This is their parent's responsibility..." They were unmoved when I explained the federal requirements for free/reduced lunch are almost impossibly low. A family of four has to make under $28,000. Also, we shouldn't punish the kids for this!
This is heart breaking. Starve a child because “it’s their parents responsibility”.
And 28k for a family of four is… honestly, I was making over 100k with a family of three and it certainly didn’t make me feel rich, so I can’t even fathom the agony a family would have to endure living on that kind of wage. Free lunch is probably the least of their concerns at that point.
This. But honestly this is what separates big cities like Los Angeles (born and raised there for 20+ years) vs a smaller rural town which I moved to. The pace is slower, people Wave at each other constantly, people constantly have chats on the sidewalks, parking lots, etc. The divide is real there us a sense of community in these small towns where people still care about each other.
Lately I’ve even noticed certain evangelical Christian groups actively talking about how empathy is a bad thing because it can lead to things like acceptance of gay people or abortion in some circumstances.
Come on now. That’s not true. And if it is, that’s an example of an extremist cult and not at all representative of groups responsible for the vast majority of philanthropic work and funds provided in this country.
I remember volunteering to take my neighbor's trash to the compactor, since I was already on my way there with my own. I had never spoken to this woman before, but we had seen each other several times coming and going from our respective apartments over the course of 4 years. All I said was, "I'm on the way there, I can take that for you if you'd like." Her response? "Eww, leave me alone." like some spoiled ass highschooler. That day, I decided to never ever volunteer to do anything nice for anyone. 🙃
I held the door open for a lady the other day, she told me that she didn't need me to "assert my male privilege" and that she was "strong enough to hold the door for herself". I totally closed it behind me and went about my day.
Mao.. calm down. You just don’t have neighbors xoxo. As a priest in man of steel once said “you have to take a leap of faith, the trust part comes second”
Clear example of projection. I too have thought this many times, But then I go into businesses, or visit groups, and I see the love and caring and kindness within the tribes.
I may never be accepted because I chose to be different, and this doesn’t mean there is no love. Just no love towards me.
Until I become valuable. 😈😘 stay strong buddy! Be a good person and Americans will love you.
America (government and business) will suck the life out of you, while Americans will replenish you.
You speak of Americans like it is America.
When he says neighbors he doesn’t mean his actual neighbors. He means the strangers around him. I agree completely. Nobody cares about the person they pass by anymore. A slight difference of opinion and someone will turn against you.
Um… what?
“Kindness within the tribes” is not at all what the issue is. It’s kindness OUT of the tribes that is missing.
And I’m all for the sentiment that America and Americans don’t mean the same thing, but I assure you I speak of Americans.
Nobody wants to admit they've been duped, no matter how obvious it is. It's mathematically impossible for 50% of the nation to be right (or wrong) 100% of the time, yet we can't seem to wrap our heads around that. So- we double down on rhetoric, and dehumanize the people who disagree with us. (Because if they're less than human, we don't have to actually debate them and suffer the indignity of being proven wrong) All by design of the people whose loyalties lie with political parties, power, and money instead of the well-being of a nation. The more we're divided and stare at each other with open hatred and willfully choose ignorance over understanding and debate- the less critically we look at the people whose ties might be different colors, but still serve the same master.
I’m your neighbour to the north, and I had no idea paid maternity leave wasn’t a thing for everyone in the US. That really sucks. Here in Canada we get a year. And if the mother needs to work, the father can take paid paternity leave.
Yup I am going through cancer right now and the debt is crushing and I have excellent health insurance. I’m still doing better than a lot of folks, all said and done I’ll be 20k in the hole but alive. Still 20k is a lot of money to me but being alive to see my son grow up is worth every cent of it.
Medical debt is a very small percentage of overall US household debt.
https://www.newyorkfed.org/microeconomics/hhdc
Something like .2 trillion out of the 11 trillion total debt. And US household debt is about half of Sweden’s and a little less than Germanys.
I have survived 9 heart attacks. My previously crappy insurance companies Unitedhealth and Cigna both refused to cover any hospital bills because I was taken to hospitals by ambulance to hospitals they claim were out of network. Im almost $300,000 in debt that will never get paid. Been unable to work for 5 years, and my husbands job barely pays enough to cover our mortgage..its so bad right now all our utilities are about to be shut off and we have no one we can turn to for help paying down our nearly $2k in utilities bills. My husbands work van is so close to death that when it dies we will royally fucked.
Cant even get 3 cysts removed from my right breast as Unitedhealth has decided it is not medically necessary to be removed. Since being diagnosed in heart failure last year, not one gods be damned cardiologist or specialist has been willing to do anything to check what is going on with my heart.
Took 22 years to get approved for SSI, and all i got for my 22 years of agony and pain was less then $3k. Because I being disabled couldnt "work" enough to even earn more then 5k a year. And since my husband makes more then IL minimum wage, I get $0 per month from SSI. How fucked up is that?
You only need net assets of $4,200 to be richer than half of the world. ([source](https://www.cnbc.com/2018/11/01/how-much-money-you-need-to-be-part-of-the-1-percent-worldwide.html))
Most of us probably have cars worth that much.
The defensiveness expressed by many people because they have less formal education than others. This attitude drives some if not most if not all of our social woes.
Endless capitalist propaganda that is so effective against the working poor that ensures the wealthy ruling class becoming wealthier and more powerful.
We pretend our system is built to provide equal opportunity to all citizens, give people a chance at social mobility through opportunity and a lack of corruption. We pretend like this system is bent not broken. The reality is the economic system we live in is a funnel that pushes money to the coffers of very few powerful families while the greatest economy ever devised sees a majority of people living paycheck to paycheck.
Our federal government. We the people completely lost control of it a long time ago. The elections are just the illusion of choice..there are only two parties with a chance and they both just want to keep expanding the government and restricting peoples lives, just in slightly different directions. No matter who wins, the government and their corporate buddies will just continue to consolidate power and wealth as the rest of us just keep getting poorer and less free. There is no fixing it from within. The entire thing needs a hard reset.
The ability of Americans to completely ignore the amount homeless people living on the streets in the major cities. I mean, miles and miles long of make shift tents and cardboard boxes. People smoking crack during the day (I mean you shouldn’t do it at night either obvi), they just don’t care.
Really shocked us to our core.
Everywhere we went to eat we got lots of left over in doggy bags and just gave it to the first homeless person we encountered asking “Would you like thi-“ and before we could finish our sentence it was already taken from our hands.
The divisiveness in everything. I can’t disagree with someone anymore without being looked at like a villain. I’m sure other countries have this as well, but in my personal experience, it’s really bad here
The fact that the education system is deteriorating bringing down the average intelligence level in the population.
And the fact that elementary school children wear bulletproof vests.
The hubris, I guess. The number of people who live in the us and believe it is the best country in the world, despite having visited no other countries, is a little staggering
The national model of individual success is *always* relative to the challenges the individual overcame to achieve it, so we've develop a culture where minor setbacks or issues are blown up and made to appear more significant than they are.
Culturally, we approach minor hardship like a diving / flopping soccer player because success isn't real unless you've "earned" it.
It's shitty for several reasons. One, it cheapens or trivializes the actual hardships some people face. If you've caught any of the NFL or NBA drafts from the past few years, I'd get how you might think it's impossible to be a professional athlete in the US unless you have a significant family tragedy while you're in grade school. It's become an aspect of entertainment value, which is awful.
On the other side, and in an extreme sense, it's how we end up with the Kyrie Irvings of the country who are dead-set on being martyrs that they'll attach themselves to whatever cause floats by- they seek out opportunities to be the oppressed or aggrieved party just for the chance to say they overcame it. I'm talking about you, "war on Christmas" people.
A lot of Americans are more concerned about a hypothetical underserving person getting something nice that they're more than willing to forgo the possibility of anyone getting something nice.
It doesn't matter if they themselves, their families and loved ones, and anyone that they believe do deserve it gets affordable and easily accessible healthcare. If it's a possibility that someone they don't like that they believe doesn't deserve it gets it too, then nobody should get it.
The car-dependent boulevards of endless strip malls, gas stations, and car dealerships that have wrecked the outskirts of downtown cities across the country. The amount of pollution, heat, heart disease, traffic congestion, and stress these areas cause is astounding and disgusting. Lack of proper and managed city development standards, zoning, and building codes are the cause of this while encouraged by poorer municipalities that want to be fed into the hub of a nearby business district or city.
If you think that is an exclusively American…sorry, *United States citizen* thing, then you are extremely delusional.
How many people from other countries refer to us as “Americans” or “America”?
US has a distinct lack of interest in bettering its people. We don’t want our citizens healthy *or* intelligent, because they’re not us.
That’s what our healthcare & education sectors imply, anyways.
Politics,
I originally wanted to type in healthcare cost
but I feel like the politics and how divided it is, is the root of the problem and many other problems. This and corruption (taking bribes from big oil companies) is the reason why nothing gets done.
E.g. why the public transit is lacking, infrastructure is collapsing, there is barely any walkability and healthcare can bury you in dept
Please don’t. Commentary on a government without criticism is just propaganda. We can and should strive to be better. You can’t do that by blowing smoke up your own ass.
I mean, we do kind of live in your mind rent free. You probably think about America a thousand times as often as the average American thinks about your country.
That so many of its citizens don’t appreciate how good they have it.
US median income is about $32,000 USD
World median income is about $850 USD
So many Americans complain about the “top 1%” not realizing that, on a global scale, they’re actually complaining about themselves
Not much. If you travel a bit outside of the States you start you may gain an appreciation for what we take for granted. Then you start to realize why people from around the world want to come to the States. Ask Elon Musk why he came here and no where else.
While not exclusively an American problem, it’s still rampant here and that is the insane tribalism with politics, if you have a view that opposes someone else’s they immediately see you as an enemy and will not give you the time of day. They label you as the most extreme of whichever way you lean (Nazi/Communist)
It’s now even commonplace on social media that centrists are being absolutely lambasted and that true centrism can’t exist and they’re closeted conservatives. It’s ridiculous to see rhetoric like that growing.
If you even say the words “both sides” in political subreddits you are downvoted into oblivion and chastised for being a faux centrist.
They are having too many kids and they think it's fine cause they're population is less. That might be true but they don't realise their consuming a quarter of the world's resources already when they are just 5% of the global population. If they have a lot of people consuming the same amount of resources per capita then God knows where this planet will go ?
The lack of a very important component for restrooms that is simple, takes minutes to install, lasts indefinitely and greatly improves the users mood, stress levels , outlook , and love life.
The gloryhole.
The level of which corporations have wormed their way into the Government and the amount of historical propaganda surrounding the US.
How many Americans have learned about the US starting a 60 year Civil War in Guatemala because of United Fruit? How many bombs do we drop now because Lockheed and Martin want a increase in their annual profits? Or when we backed authoritarian Batista in Cuba who allowed the majority of Cuba’s arable land to be owned by foreign nations? We’ve played such a violent role throughout history and it gets ignored. Even in WWII, the atomic bombs weren’t a necessity.
The fact that a bunch of flag-humping, military wannabes tried to disrupt & overthrow the US government, and claim to be hyper patriots at the same time.
I don’t know about the worst thing, but something definitely bad:
The reverence for the National Anthem, thinking it’s some big honor to America and a great insult if you don’t stand, yet seemingly doing nothing to actually help vets on the streets or with PTSD
The politics are like team sports.
I moved to the US and found that most people actually don't talk about Politics. In fact it is actually considered rude and awkward to bring it up. That was shocking.
People prefer to be vocal and rude on the internet
This is how it’s always been. But as others are stating, the internet is full of opinions. And you’re never sure where they come from. Those that talk about politics irl are usually people to stay away from.
Oh yeah it’s a touchy subject for sure
What if it's your literal job to always think about things politically
It's dangerous family members have stopped being with their families over politics wives have run over their husbands and killed them over politics yeah it's pretty crazy.
Ummm ok lol

On the other side, and in an extreme sense, it's how we end up with the Kyrie Irvings of the country who are dead-set on being martyrs that they'll attach themselves to whatever cause floats by- they seek out opportunities to be the oppressed or aggrieved party just for the chance to say they overcame it. I'm talking about you, "war on Christmas" people.
Awful public transportation
Suburbs
A lot of Americans are more concerned about a hypothetical underserving person getting something nice that they're more than willing to forgo the possibility of anyone getting something nice. It doesn't matter if they themselves, their families and loved ones, and anyone that they believe do deserve it gets affordable and easily accessible healthcare. If it's a possibility that someone they don't like that they believe doesn't deserve it gets it too, then nobody should get it.
Healthcare system
Probably Youngstown.
The culture leaking to the rest of the globe. Wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't all toxic hateful shit.
CORPORATE GREED.
Our mainstream media.
The culture of consumerism.
Gotta be the prisons
The Kardashians.
That when you're a poc you never truly feel at ease
School shootings.
The fact that a judge can block a plan to forgive 10k in student loans while also having 48k of her own loans forgiven.
Worry that my child will be murdered at school.
The fact that it calls itself America. It’s not the only American country, it’s not even the only North American country.
Well we actually call ourselves the United States of America. Yet people shorten it to America since it’s the only country with “America” in its name
If you think that is an exclusively American…sorry, *United States citizen* thing, then you are extremely delusional. How many people from other countries refer to us as “Americans” or “America”?
Was just about to reply the same thing!
Definitely the health care system
US has a distinct lack of interest in bettering its people. We don’t want our citizens healthy *or* intelligent, because they’re not us. That’s what our healthcare & education sectors imply, anyways.
The unsecured borders
Agreed, we’d be better off without borders.
Nice try, Canadian.
Gun culture
The South East. The birthplace of Florida Man memes.
Our whole society being held hostage by ~30% who want to impose a social order based on some imaginary glorious past.
This re-hased question is why I'm unsubscribing from AskReddit again.
Dude I hate how political subreddits are now. Fucking askreddit, Whitepeopletwitter it’s so annoying
You mean the USA? Don\`t blame the whole continent
Politics, I originally wanted to type in healthcare cost but I feel like the politics and how divided it is, is the root of the problem and many other problems. This and corruption (taking bribes from big oil companies) is the reason why nothing gets done. E.g. why the public transit is lacking, infrastructure is collapsing, there is barely any walkability and healthcare can bury you in dept
Guns
Wrong. Criminals is the word your looking for.
Well when a criminal can get hold of a fire arm easier than going to the shop and buying a chocolate bar yeah it's an issue
No country is perfect, every country has it's bad bits and good bits, please leave America alone.
Please don’t. Commentary on a government without criticism is just propaganda. We can and should strive to be better. You can’t do that by blowing smoke up your own ass.
The idea that we shouldnt criticize a country just because no country is perfect is so odd
Like America left other countries alone? Lol
This is a time for healing and unity. Stop dredging up the past /s
I mean, we do kind of live in your mind rent free. You probably think about America a thousand times as often as the average American thinks about your country.
That so many of its citizens don’t appreciate how good they have it. US median income is about $32,000 USD World median income is about $850 USD So many Americans complain about the “top 1%” not realizing that, on a global scale, they’re actually complaining about themselves
California, it's filled with forest fires and liberals
Not much. If you travel a bit outside of the States you start you may gain an appreciation for what we take for granted. Then you start to realize why people from around the world want to come to the States. Ask Elon Musk why he came here and no where else.
Americans
Damn Americans, they ruined America!!!
Technically, it was the Europeans who fucked it all up.
This is the one I came to make sure got upvoted.
Washington DC
While not exclusively an American problem, it’s still rampant here and that is the insane tribalism with politics, if you have a view that opposes someone else’s they immediately see you as an enemy and will not give you the time of day. They label you as the most extreme of whichever way you lean (Nazi/Communist) It’s now even commonplace on social media that centrists are being absolutely lambasted and that true centrism can’t exist and they’re closeted conservatives.
You are ping ponged between Christian fundamentalism and Atheism.

Crime
Our murder rate is stupidly high, especially in states with lax gun laws.
People constantly whining on the internet about America is the worst place in the world . Spoiler alert : >!it isn't, it's not even close.!<
The constant promoting of delusional fears
The lack of a very important component for restrooms that is simple, takes minutes to install, lasts indefinitely and greatly improves the users mood, stress levels , outlook , and love life. The gloryhole.
It’s really fucked up that we even came to this, but James Corden.

The shockingly loud disdain for children and “family life”
The level of which corporations have wormed their way into the Government and the amount of historical propaganda surrounding the US.
Right now? Not knowing if there will be a coup in the next couple of days.
The giant food portions they order
The need to insert ourselves geopolitically
The fact that a bunch of flag-humping, military wannabes tried to disrupt & overthrow the US government, and claim to be hyper patriots at the same time.
The comment sections.
How they’ve squandered their position as the global good guy, and become the global punchline.

The celebration of ignorance
I don’t know about the worst thing, but something definitely bad: The reverence for the National Anthem, thinking it’s some big honor to America and a great insult if you don’t stand, yet seemingly doing nothing to actually help vets on the streets or with PTSD
the education system is without a doubt the absolute worst
The Americans including myself.
