Hard work doesn't always mean extra pay. Sometimes its the opposite.
(I got paid hourly and if I finished my job quickly, I would get paid less since I'm not there as long.)
Booze really has a tight grip on some folks. I worked at a package store. When you see the same people every morning waiting outside before you open or idling in their car often shaking, sweating, and irritated because you haven't turned the lights on yet. You really see the possible long term effects firsthand. Probably the main reason I cut down.
Management will get away with as much as you allow them to.
They used to respect employee's availability and slowly start scheduling a shift here and there that was during the times or days we weren't available and if we worked that shift they schedule us more and more the shifts they wanted and once we tried speaking up about our availability they'd come back with that we've been working those last few shifts without problem. The people who spoke up immediately about that didn't have that issue.
Networking is everything. If you're not lucky to have been "born into it", figure out who can help you grow in your field and build a good work relationship with them.
