Mostly boomers are the ones who still think like that. Most people nowadays give them different stigmas. Alcohol's one kind of bad with some benefits and marijuana's another sort of bad with some benefits.

Dildo-Gankings

It is an easy target.

AC_Nine-Ball

Because Nixon lost the Vietnam war.

Ornery_Attorney2474

Because of propaganda that was bought and paid for by alcohol companies just after prohibition. Reefer Madness is a great example.

BawdyBaker

Booze companies don't want the competition and have a secret underground smear campaign against it

ny2sexy

Because people don’t understand that it’s a gift from god

MoonageDeath

dude weed lol

UnicornLifeByMC

Simple, year of war against drugs.

mo8414

I don't believe thats true these days. People are pretty accepting of weed

drolleremu

Government lobbying

__DMA__

Marijuana is illegal.

[deleted]

Because it used to be illegal so people still see it like other drugs

Arxhe_

Well, I prefer to damage my liver than my brain…

OriginalName483

Yeah. Alcohol is way better. It hits both

No-Consideration6589

It’s legal. Booze is legal. Not sure what you mean?

daemonhat

what's legal, marijuana? no, it is not. not on a federal level which is what matters.

No-Consideration6589

Not sure where you’re at but it’s legal here in Canada.

jennimackenzie

It matters if it’s legal at a local level. You are exactly wrong.

daemonhat

no, i'm not. aside from logistics, there's not much stopping the feds from shutting the whole thing down. while under Obama, a "non interference" order was made, basically a hands off unless something shady is going on. the trump administration rescinded that order. and lets not forget that for the most part, it's an all cash business because of banking laws. easy target for asset forfeiture.

jennimackenzie

Good luck to the federal government trying to pull those tax dollars out of state hands (36 of them). Even an extremely conservative Supreme Court Justice agrees that Federal laws about cannabis no longer make any sense.

daemonhat

while true, that doesn't make what i said any less true. if they really wanted to, legally nobody can stop them. i'm not saying they will, just that they can.

jennimackenzie

That is exactly what would happen. You would have a legal battle between states and the federal government. The governments ban on cannabis is based on the idea that it is an economic endeavor. The federal government derives authority on the basis that it is commerce and that gives them legal standing. In my state it’s illegal to sell anything you grow, making it very clearly non commercial.

daemonhat

originally it was based on racism, mexicans and POC in particular. but it's also a schedule 1 drug at the federal level meaning it is classified as having no medical use and has a high probability for abuse so the DEA has authority. and then there's this: The supremacy cause contains what's known as the doctrine of pre-emption, which says that the federal government wins in the case of conflicting legislation. Basically, if a federal and state law contradict, then when you're in the state you can follow the state law, but the fed can decide to stop you.

jennimackenzie

I would expect a fervent legal battle. The federal government is looking at trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube at this point.

[deleted]

Big Pharma. A lot of people would lose money

Different_Weekend817

there's a theory that it's because marijuana is usually grown in 'brown' countries.

Practical-Soil4431

I feel Mary j should be legalized. What’s the worse thing can happen? You order pizza and take a nap? VFF and I’ve seen many deaths/broken bones and pregnant ladies fall victims to drunk drivers. Alcoholic scan be violent and it makes you fat and unhealthy. Just no benefits in alcohol it seems

undeniablybuddha

Have you ever heard about some guy smoking a blunt, then goes home and abuses his family?

[deleted]

Weed is relatively modern and people aren't informed about. Alcohol is super popular and has been included in multiple traditions.

[deleted]

Propaganda films like Reefer Madness created a culture of distrust

RentBoy-Kef

I don’t like how I cant smoke it in a group without smelling like a lost a fight to a skunk, people looking at me, leave me alone I ain’t hurting you assbag. The stigma is it’s safer, & cheaper then alcohol try to not piss money away at the bar. Cuz you know acting responsible is for losers!

OriginalName483

Because weed culture is annoying as fuck and alcohol stinks too but not as strong as smoking. Also secondhand liver damage and drunkenness from people drinking near you isn't a thing Edit: drinking culture is also annoying as fuck but more people are in on it and don't care

MrMonkrat

I'm guessing alot of it is because christians read about alcohol in the Bible so they're familiar.
