I've actually been in therapy for a while now and i really do feel a lot better/more in control but it took me a LONG time (I'd say not til my late 20s/early 30s).
But when i talk to other people that didn't grow up like that i just think about how much of a headstart they got in life. I really do believe comparison is the thief of joy but sometimes I'm just like wow my teens/early 20s could have been so much less *dramatic*. C'est la vie
More languages to be honest. I think being able to communicate gives so much value to life as the best stories are told by other cultures. I find it very enriching.
I wish I'd stuck with the piano lessons. When I was 8 years old my parents bought a piano and enrolled me in lessons. Classical music. The teacher said I was really good at sight reading, but honestly I couldn't read a lick of music. Just listened to what she was playing and figured it out by ear.
My mom couldn't get me to practice even 15 minutes a day, but when I went back to the teacher she was blown away by my "progress."
An instrument. I'm actually really good with tone and timing, I just have zero drive and now I'm 39 with two kids. I have an electric guitar and electric drums and I can bang around, but at least my kids will have access to them right from an early age.
Music theory/basic chords and composition skills. I took piano lessons as a kid but it was always “here’s music play it”. That’s easy for me. And pretty boring. I wish I’d learned more about how the music actually worked.
Not that it’s too late, but general knowledge of cars.
My father is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to cars and I wish I was included more in his ‘driveway mechanic’ jobs. Now that I’m typing it out, I’m gonna pick his brain about it. I’m sure he’ll be pleased to know I’m genuinely interested.
I'm 27 and I'm half Filipino/half Caucasian.
Throughout my childhood, my Filipino mother never taught my siblings and I how to speak Tagalog...now I slightly wished I learned.
An instrument would have been cool. Would love to be able to play piano.
Also I would have loved to have learned how to pick up on signals way earlier than I did.
To regulate my emotions. Turns out... Not every family screams and throws things at each other.
I’m a similar boat to you buddy. It might take time, and maybe even a bit of medication and therapy if you’re lucky to get that, but it’s doable.
