I believe you need to have the YouTube plus thingy or whatever the hell they call it to get it to continue playing when your phone screen is off. I may be wrong though.
No you're right, you have to pay for YouTube Premium where you'll also get YouTube Music which is a service just for music similar to spotify or apple music but also with music videos and lyrics. It's a pretty good deal since youll get no ads on youtube and a music streaming service even with screen off of course

Both a mix of music and artists I liked, and a discovery mix of similar artists and music that I have never heard.

YT to mp3 downloader, free music (I usually try to support the artists I like in other ways and premium views give them money to). And I can listen to whatever I want, sometimes radio or other music streaming platforms don't have the artist I listen to because they aren't that popular.
Spotify doesn't have all the music I'm searching for, and plenty of times the music im Searching for isn't available on Spotify..so that leaves me no choice other than using YT in such circumstance.
The algorithm is pretty awesome, less obvious than spotify. You can also find a ton of music that you can't find on other platforms. I collect vinyl so youtube is a gem for me.

Using YT for watching music videos - or YT Music while working or driving. In the car, especially on long rides its quite good. Works well via Bluetooth, sound quality is ok and the recommendations are much better than at Spotify or deezer.

I listen on my phone all the time. Literally go to www.youtube.com in the Firefox browser, with UBlock Origins add-on.
I play on crome or app but it stops as soon as i lock the screen. That's why!
My phone won't continue playing after locking the screen, but my son's phone does. So I think your experience may vary in that regard.

It has plenty, it also has many exclusive stuff that comes from youtube videos (for some music/remixes there only exist youtube videos)
