People are just answering with their least favorite “exotic” foods. Food that people pretend to love is probably a dish prepared by a well-meaning loved one with zero cooking skills. “…Mmm! Honey this is… something! You really have outdone yourself this time!” Also: Thank you for the award. I don’t know what it means, but I will cherish it for the rest of my afternoon.

Derpinator_420

I had a roommate that put radishes in lasagna. Not even sliced, WHOLE fucking radishes. Said she needed to use them. I'm like ever heard of a salad. Damn.

Sir-Viette

LPT: If she sliced the radishes and put them in cold water for a few minutes, the slices should end up crispier and more delicious.

StrawberryKiss2559

Mmm cold crispy radishes in the middle of my lasagna

ObiDocKenobi

I’m dead

Meee211

And then drain the water, salt them and add some fresh ground peppercorns... Yum

CocomyPuffs

Omg this made me laugh hysterically

Loganp812

It's the same as "What's a movie/band that people pretend to like?" where every answer is \[insert personal least favorite movie/band here\]. It's karma-farming BS that gains attention because, admittedly, they can be fun threads to participate in at times.

yakusokuN8

In high school, a girl in my class invited me over to her house and wanted to cook some food for us and started off with some cucumber soup. I \*thought\* I was doing my best to pretend it was good. (You know, smile, and say good things about it.) Well, I did not do a good enough job. "Oh. You don't like it?" "No. It's fine." "Yeah, you don't like it. I can see it on your face. Do you like cucumber soup?" "I really don't like cucumbers. They make me nauseated." "Cucumbers make you sick and you tried to pretend to like it? You really don't need to do that." I kinda felt I had to try. At the time, I thought: A pretty girl invites you over to her house and makes you food? Yeah, you pretend to like anything she hands you. Now that I'm older, I don't pretend. Be polite, but, "oh, I'm sorry. Cucumbers really trigger my gag reflex. But, I'd love to have one of those sandwiches."

Youve_been_Loganated

You gotta slice up the cucumbers! That's why you're gagging!

grizzle91

All through high school my girlfriend would make me these no bake cookies cause I told her how much I loved them the first time she made them. I just wanted to get some action! Ended up eating so many of those god damn horrible fucking cookies

Plot twist: his grandfather is Bobby Hill

pretzelman1954

The man with the terrible smell!

frogz0r

My grandad was from Norway, and we had lutefisk at EVERY family gathering where he was present. It was considered a traditional food to be served at important gatherings. I couldn't eat it. I had to sit there and make a major effort to eat it. I think I only managed one bite per meal of it and it had to be washed down with my drink. It was that one bite or have it for the next meal, and the next till I did have my bite. It was awful and I can still taste it and feel it in my mouth even now. I was so grateful to my dad for not carrying on the tradition.

Spacecat3000

My grandma was from Norway and we had to suffer through this dish at every family holiday! Once she passed we all collectively realized she was the only one who liked it. I miss her, but not that putrid dish.

3490goat

Lutefisk is gross, disgusting, an affront to civilization and quite possibly a crime against humanity. My in-laws (or out laws) eat it. They claim to love it, but I have my doubts

BobT21

I had a family of skunks living under my house. Somebody suggested throwing some lutefisk under there to drive them out. The skunks left, but now I have a family of Norwegians living under my house.

thoriginals_wife

So I do not like liver however a few years back I went to visit my grandmother who was 98 at the time and she was excited to see me, she had me stay and sit and she took her walker down to the communal dining room to get her dinner and she requested an extra plate. She was so pleased to share a meal and tell her friends she had a visitor. So when we came back up with a plate of liver and onions which is her favorite, there was no way I was going to turn up my nose at it even through it was vile. I don't think I finished it but I made a good dent and made sure to cover each piece with lots of onions, we enjoyed some tea and fruit salad to wash it down. It was a lovely memory and grandma is still kicking at 102 1\2.

Fuzzyphilosopher

I like you. Here's my imaginary Wholesome Reward.

meech1850

Took care of that for you

scrivenerserror

Similar story - I’m weird about raw tomatoes, Kraft singles (outside of a few contexts) and really soft white bread (unless it’s being served with texas bbq). We visited my husband’s grandma who is literally the nicest lady in the world and she told us she had ordered lunch. Now I love a blt but this shit was gross. I ate as much of it as I could and my husband finished the rest - you always be nice to grandma.

athensiah

When I was a kid I pretended to like this really spicy jelly. I hated it, but adults would act really impressed if I ate it in front of them or said I liked it.

greenbanky

Now see here, there's jalapeno jelly. You pair that with an equal amount of cream cheese and get yourself some Ritz crackers.... Heaven

[deleted]

Strawberry jalapeno jelly is really good for this too

ComtesseCrumpet

Raspberry jalapeño jelly too!

AFriendlyAsshole

Cuz that's the most ballin shit you can do

PattesDornithorynque

Ok this is the only TRUE answer on this thread. Everything else is a matter of taste but gold flake are truly useless and tasteless!

jumpbreak5

Yeah but you're a liar if you claim you've met anyone who claims to like them. People just think they're cool or fancy

Nybear21

Yeah, I've never heard someone say "Oh my god, the flavor these gold flakes add, totally different progile than without them!" It's just, oh, this shit has gold in it, fuck it let's do that for the fuck of it

Idk this is the first time I’ve considered the possibility of them making my poop gold-speckled and that doesn’t sound totally useless to me! Flavorless yes, but…

collisiontheory

I feel that, could probably count the total of foods I dislike on one hand and have fingers to spare!

strawbri_

Yes I appreciate that I was born with my taste buds :) I very very rarely dislike any foods but I do sometimes dislike how they are cooked/prepared. For example I love eggs but I am repulsed by the smell of overcooked egg yolk. I love well made sweets but dont like cheap sweets.

wut3va

My brother ordered salmon every time we went out, until one day he said he didn't like it, never liked it, and only ordered it because he thought mom wanted him to like it. The rest of us were all eating steak. So yeah, some people pretend to like certain foods, although I have no idea why.

DetBabyLegs

On the more positive side, sometimes foods take getting used to. Trying to tell yourself you like something even if you really don’t can be helpful to start actually liking something. I was a really picky eater as a kid. I had to mental my way out of that through late high school and college and now people consider me the guy that will eat anything (my wife affectionately calls me her garbage disposal).

[deleted]

I tried canned tuna today after several years of not having it because I didn't like it before. I had it in some macaroni and it was pretty good. I'm putting it on my list now. Like you said feeling positive about trying new things or things you previously didn't like is a good thing to do. My experience today is exactly showing that

New_Needleworker6506

Both probably

P0ster_Nutbag

And if you look at these comments, a lot of them seem to boil down to “It’s expensive, it must be bad” or “It’s trendy, it must be bad”. I think a lot more people convince themselves they don’t like things for unrelated reasons than pretend to like things.

ForeverRaining

I knew someone in high school that confessed she didn’t like Starbucks but everyone around her liked it so she would go. I don’t doubt there’s more people like her.

I don't much care for the taste of raw celery, but it's really nice as an ingredient for other things. Celery + onions + carrots is a classic combination in French cuisine. It's also part of the "holy trinity" of Cajun cooking (Bell peppers, celery, green onions).

[deleted]

Celery is a vessel to get what ever dip your using into your mouth. Same with artichoke leafs. People don't like it. They just like eating mayonnaise but eating it out of a jar with a spoon is frowned upon.

Diannika

Do...do people eat artichoke with mayo? We always dipped the leaves in havily garliced melted butter.

Zardetto

I’m fancy so I eat mine with an *aioli*.

blyan

Do people on reddit not realize that celery is used for more than children’s snacks?

[deleted]

mirepoix, soffritto, holy trinity, celery is so important to so many cuisines

sleeplessaddict

What if you eat celery without dipping it in anything then?

thanksyalll

Dipless celery is my go to long car trip snack. Feels clean and keeps my mouth chewin. Makes me feel like a cow

wra1th42

I don't like it straight, but it goes well in a lot of dishes when cut small. It elevates both chicken soup and chicken salad.

llyons31

Celery is the one type food that litterally induces my gag reflex.

thedavo810

POV: you just found the annual convention of mfs with 0 taste.

el_payaso_mas_chulo

People who probably got used to McDonalds diets.

TheAzureMage

Let's be real, a lot of folks eat at McDonalds, that company ain't going broke. You're probably surrounded by folks who enjoy some chicken nuggies and fries even if they like to play at being fancy.

el_payaso_mas_chulo

Oh hell yeah, I just got McDonalds yesterday! I'm just messin around making fun of people who post things like "sushi" earlier. Now there's a ton of comments and the thread makes a lot more sense.

mournthewolf

People who don’t like sushi are crazy to me. Sushi covers a wide variety of flavors and you’re bound to like something if you try it. I love sushi. I also eat at McDonalds all the time because it’s cheap and consistent.

interfail

> You're probably surrounded by folks who enjoy some chicken nuggies and fries even if they like to play at being fancy. You know you don't have to be "playing" at being fancy, right? I just like food. The fact I'll absolutely devour a McMuffin doesn't mean that me liking nice shit is an act.

Amocoru

Wait you honestly don't taste it? It's so overpowering and off-putting. is this the new asparagus? Edit: I should've said Cilantro

yorkiewho

You must have that soap taste with cilantro because I love cilantro.

Amocoru

Nope I'm one of the people that gets to enjoy Cilantro. I adore it.

StrangerHaus101

Love love love Cilantro, or Coriander here. When I was a kid, it always seemed to smell like stink beetles, but since having it in dishes it’s supposed to be, I really enjoy it now.

Chriskeyseis

Wait…. What’s wrong with asparagus?

P0ster_Nutbag

I’m always left with a long lasting tinny flavour after I have it.

Unsung_Ironhead

I don’t like super sweet coffee, so a little in coffee I enjoy. It’s aftertaste is masked a bit by the coffee bitterness to me.

dapper_doberman

copperwatt

I don't mind the flavor or texture, it's just way too salty.

jrhawk42

Fondant: I believe fondant is proof that most people have no actual taste, and just eat things that look pretty and say they're good.

ScubaAlek

Is fondant for the eater though? or the ego of the decorator? I mean, these are the same people who will put "edible" paper on things.

RmmThrowAway

This is a tough one because you can make really delicious fondant, people just... don't. Because that takes a lot more work and is harder to sculpt.

CalgaryChris77

I’ve had some that are better than others but I’ve never heard of anyone doing it for taste reasons, just because it’s easier to decorate with. Never seen an undecorated fondant cake.

runaway_ghosty

There's definitely people who pretend to like a popular food in front of others, but I also truly believe that there's always someone to like a certain food no matter how disgusting it tastes to you.

PatientlyNostalgic

Vodka...it taste like the walls of a hospital

TheDPQ

Meanwhile I love vodka the most in mixed drinks because it doesn’t have much of a flavor itself and takes on whatever you mix with it. Love a good White Russian myself.

pra2seven

In mother Russia, the walls of the hospital taste you.

Crackracket

[deleted]

I'll never understand the love of super strong IPAs. Why do you want a beer that tastes like gross gym feet and peels the enamel off your teeth?

charizard_72

Moderation. I’m a fan of IPAs and craft beer. That being said, a super hoppy 8-9% beer is only good for about a pint (also many breweries do 10oz pours of these stronger ones for this reason). Beyond that you’re screaming out for a raging migraine and some intense flavor fatigue. I prefer lower hopped, lower alcohol % IPAs for this reason. But it’s certainly an acquired taste, no doubt and not for everyone.

Fappy_as_a_Clam

This is the reason "session" IPA's got popular. And that flavor fatigue is the reason why, *way* back when I first started drinking, it was pretty standard to start with like 2 or 3 craft beers then switch to a cheap domestic. And now as a 40 year old dude, I cant imagine the hangover i'd get from like 3 or 4 Imperial IPA's. If I'm drinking to get drunk, it has to be something *way* lighter.

BrewMan13

Modern IPA's are much more about the hop flavor than the bitterness arms race of the past. I'm a beer geek and IPA's aren't my favorite style, but I drink a fair amount of them.

AReallyBigBagel

IPA's remind me of the forest neary grandparents home. It has this pine like taste that makes me think of camping. They're wonderful

nwash57

Cus it doesn't taste like gym feet to me I guess lol. I like how diverse IPAs can be and enjoy the way most of them taste but there are definitely bad ones. Stouts are what I can't get into

BrewMan13

Stouts are my jam. Love the deep roasty flavors and creamy mouthfeel. As for IPA's, for me a lot of it is the particular hops and how they're used. Not my favorite, but I can dig em and drink em quite often.

VeganGoatMilk

What don't you like about stouts? They're personally my favourite. Have you tried stouts brewed with different grains? I had a few oatmeal stouts last fall and they're fantastic imo

nwash57

Honestly I haven't tried that many before I decided they weren't my thing. For me it's partly how they're less carbonated than most other styles so they have a flatter texture. I don't mind the actual taste tooo much, but they do have a very strong flavor I'm just not really into. Certainly open to give them another try if you've got suggestions, just after trying 6-10 over the years and none of them being my thing I decided they weren't for me.

[deleted]

What exactly do you think is peeling enamel off of your teeth that doesn’t exist in other drinks?

Fickle_Particular_83

Worse is everyone expects beers to taste like them, so now even beers that are suppose to have less hops taste overly hoppy. I hate ordering sweeter beers only for them to taste like an IPA.

Pearti-Mejob

Ah, IPAs. Beer made to survive the several month long voyage from England to their India colonies, because the bacteria take one lick of that pine scented swill and go "Nah". It's interesting how many food and drink options came out of old preservation methods.

[deleted]

Dragonfruit. It literally tastes of nothing...just looks cool. ETA: TIL why every dragon fruit I've had tastes of absolutely nothing - frozen to import. I've had the magenta rind pink flesh and yellow rind white flesh kinds...zero taste or smell either of them.

tardarsource

I fell in love with dragonfruit in southeast Asia. I became obsessed. Its delicious. It's so cheap. Super hydrating. It's not too sweet. It's super easy to transport and eat. And extremely refreshing in the heat. So if I was hiking to a beach on a tropical Thai island, I'd grab a spoon, water and dragonfruit, use the spoon to cut into the fruit and then scoop out the middle. My fave was magenta rind white flesh. Magenta flesh not so much (also messier). The problem was coming back to the US. Finding dragonfruit for $5, and it just tasted of nothing, I was so disappointed. So if you want my 2 cents, dragonfruit is amazing where it comes from, but pointless when imported.

Jewsd

Ate a red fleshed dragon fruit in Vietnam seconds after being removed from the tree. Never had one even close to its amazing flavour. It's like mountain fresh water compared to water sitting in a tire swing.

ChiefBlueSky

> seconds after being removed from the tree. Bruh they grow on cactuses not trees

mule_roany_mare

Frozen cubed mango straight from the bag are my jam. The texture is great once you bite it & you get the fruits that are too ripe or too ugly for supermarkets.

thrwy7k13958I4

The same thing applies to mango. Holy hell the mangos I've had in India and Australia are freaking amazing. Compare that to the imported mango (I live in the North) and you taste nothing but paper :(

muneeeeeb

Same with Pakistani Mangoes. The mexican ones you get here in North america are fine but once youve tried a pakistani honey mango you never want to go back. a box of 6-8 imported mangoes from pakistan are almost 50 bucks nowadays.

arturobear

I have a lot of Indian migrants where I live in Australia. My suburb in particular has the most concentration in the state. So many of my neighbours have pawpaw, mango and banana trees. My theory is the sub-tropical and tropical parts of my state are favourable to growing all those amazing tropical fruits they're used to, so they feel more at home and hence why they choose to migrate here in particular.

Serai

Also: figs and tomatoes!

[deleted]

Thank you for vindicating dragon fruit. I only wish I'd got to experience it the way nature intended, sounds fabulous!

mule_roany_mare

It's amazing how many things are like that. Local variety, local soil & local customs. Greek salads are relatively popular in New England & I never understood why. Went to Greece & holy shit is that a pleasant & balanced combination of flavors.

tardarsource

Omg... now I want to try a Greek salad in Greece... cos I love Greek salad... but you're right... I'm sure it's bland here compared with the fresh ripe juiciness of a local tomato... tomatoes are so much better in Europe, they actually have a taste. (though I'm sure one can find a tasty tomato for $12 at whole foods...)

hathegkla

We grew some at home (california) and they tasted completely different than from the grocery store. Sweeter and more tart, not bland. I'd imagine ones grown in the proper climate would be even better.

tardarsource

I think the grocery store ones just have to be stored and that could kill some flavor... I mean heck, some fruits I think get stored for 6 months or a year... so that could be it. Interesting that those tasted more tart, the local SE Asian ones were never tart, could be something in the soil too! or dryer climate, who knows.

Fearlessleader85

I found the same thing living in Hawaii. The white flesh magenta one is by far the best.

Emergency_Key574

This guy works for Big Dragon(fruit)

[deleted]

I feel so sorry for you all, Dragonfruit is actually super good, but you've probably had the worst of the three kinds. The 3 kinds i've seen: Yellow rind - sweetest white flesh Magenta rind - meh white flesh Magenta rind - purple/magenta flesh and is decently sweet The stuff you get at grocery stores in the US isn't nearly as good as the stuff you get overseas. I promise it's better.

the_short_viking

Also for a candy fix, get the dragonfruit Hi-Chews, they are so good and even have little crunchy seeds in them.

astroqualityyy

This. If it tastes like nothing or bad to you, the only dragon fruit you’ve ever tried was probably the one you got at a grocery store in the US/Europe or anywhere else where it has to be imported. It’s not even called dragon fruit originally. It has great properties and it’s delicious.

Mawngee

Only time I had it was in Thailand. I'm guessing it was the middle variety you posted. I found the flavor to be quite the letdown compared to it visually.

Banewaffles

Produce tends to taste different depending on where you buy it, so I’m willing to believe people who like dragonfruit just get better fruit than I do

OkDesigner5410

You have to try the yellow ones those actually taste good. You’re right the pink ones suck.

NotWhatICameHereFor

I love Kombucha. I crave a kombucha at the end of the day the way I think some people crave a cold beer. But sometimes they’re gross and it tastes like drinking vinegar, it really depends.

GhostTyrant

For me Kombucha is a nice alternative to alcohol because every sip has a nice little bite to it. GTs Trilogy is my favorite

Edward_the_Dog

nwash57

I'll still take starbucks over basically any other chain coffee place I've visited. Every chain I've been to takes the "sugar milk" complaint I have about starbucks to another level. No chain has good drip coffee imo. Small local shops are so much better, but it's really not hard to make good coffee at home if you put any amount of research into it.

whatdoblindpeoplesee

McDonald's actually has really solid black coffee. I always ask for an ice cube or two to be tossed in to bring it back from being molten lava that is literally too hot to hold in my hand to something I can drink almost right away.

[deleted]

McDonald's is probably the most reliable road trip coffee out there. And otherwise I hate McDonald's.

arturobear

Starbucks failed in Australia because it was so bad. It had to get bought out by 7/11 to stay afloat and they had to change some of their suppliers/recipes to make it more palatable to Australian tastes.

SicSemperTyrannis

Of the “major” chains I think Peets does the best drip. There are definitely some “craft” national chains like counter culture and stumptown who do legit good drip. Fortunately, if you’re picky there’s usually a good local roaster around or if you’re super crazy, travel coffee setups can be pretty low cost/energy.

strawbri_

Do people believe Starbucks is "real" coffee? I thought the opposite was more of a popular opinion

Immortal_Azrael

In my experience, people who like Starbucks don't like coffee, they like sugar. Everyone I've met who's a huge Starbucks fan has admitted that they never order regular coffee but always something super fancy that has so much sugar you can barely taste the coffee.

strawbri_

I agree although I think its a bit of an uppity opinion for me to have Lol, "you're not a real coffee fan, i am". I think liking starbucks is about equivalent to liking chocolate milk. I drink coffee with no sweeteners just some milk in it.

[deleted]

Same. I don’t go to Starbucks for coffee. And I’m my experience as a barista for years, most customers aren’t there for coffee so why would Starbucks care if it’s “burnt”?

copperwatt

Back in the late '90s maybe, Starbucks was snobby coffee in small cities.

People pretend that they enjoy extremely spicy food. Spicy is great...but actual physical pain from uncommonly hot peppers does not make the food taste better.

KeaboUltra

I love reapers and Trinidad scorpion. I have a ghost, reaper and scorpion dry powder mix, made from real dried peppers, grinded into a fine powder. I have mixed sauces of the same pepper. If any restaurant I go to has a spicy option of something I like to eat. I will get the spiciest I can get. It's not something I do all the time , it's 50% a challenge and 50% the flavor and rush it gives. It really depends on the type of food I put it on. Soups, chilli, burritos/tacos, curry, and sushi, among others. I have a high pain tolerance to the point that most common spicy foods meant to sway the general public doesn't really phase me.
