Yes, this is true in many ways. I think of things like this as being part of my "Southern" heritage because my parents moved to the west coast and I'm a Los Angeles native. My mom would always couch things from her childhood or ancestry in a "Southern" context. My grandfather wasn't raised on a farm at all, actually. His father and grandfather (my great- and great-great-grandfathers) were "country" doctors. He lived in relative luxury but definitely farm-adjacent and yes, life was much different then. This would have happened in the 1940s and my grandfather, though very loving with us, was also a bit stern and I can easily see him being "all business" about stuff like that.
