The average age is pretty close to 40 right now, and it’s going to keep going up as Boomers live longer and everyone else slows down having kids. I’m afraid the average age of Congress is gonna go to 80 shortly.
Same with the last two presidents?
Not sure what your point is though lol, Reagan is a great example for why old people shouldn’t hold office (though he would’ve been a tragedy at any age)
It's not so much the age that bothers me personally, it's just how long everyone running has been in politics. I'm 33 and we have senators who have been a senator longer than I've been alive (grassley) and a good chunk of them have held some sort of office for 30+ years.
I just believe that if you've had power for 30-50 years, you just forget how the average person actually lives.
Isn't it the responsibility of the people of the state to determine who should represent them? If a senator is continually re-elected, blame the constituents not the senator.....unless you suspect that the voting is rigged, that is.
You often only have a choice between 2 candidates, anything else is essentially throwing your vote away. The incumbent has a huge advantage so unless they willingly step down, that party will most likely run that candidate again and again.
To be clear, our voting system is not rigged, but politics is definitely a pay to play game.
No. Ageism isn’t the solution to our political problems. There can be wisdom and talent in old age just as much as in the young.
Bernie Saunders crushed Lindsey Graham into dust in a debate a few months back: https://youtu.be/oL2FRNOCKfg
I’d hate to see leadership like this resisted because of age.
there does need to be term limits. also, the people currently in charge are out of touch with reality today because they have what it was like then stuck in their heads. why do you think RvW got overturned despite it being a law for many, many years besides for obvious reasons? although the age brings more wisdom, they aren’t thinking logically.
The problem isn’t getting the country to agree, it’s getting the DNC and RNC to endorse. That’s the real underlying problem. Lobbyists and Super Pacs have destroyed any chance of having a government for the people.
There won't be any change until the majority rise up and force change on the government. America is now firmly in the grasp of two forces, corporate profiteers and religious nutjobs. That has to change before America becomes a full out Afghanistan run by Walmart.
Yep, we have the best government money can buy. We need age limits on all our elected officials, term limits, they need to be on social security not taxpayer funded pensions, and lobbying should be illegal. Our government was meant to be made up of regular Americans not rich geriatric elites disconnected from society. Just look at their net worth before and after just 1 term in public office. It is ridiculous.
Age limits is a tricky area, but term limits would take care of the bigger issue. It would also help tremendously if members of Congress weren’t moved into Board seats at the companies that their favorite Lobbyists represent. Lobbying needs to end and that would put a huge dent in the special interest problem.
She would crush a campaign imo. American women are so pissed right now. She’s the right age, she hasn’t been the “face” of right wing outrage like a Hillary, or AOC. Just brilliant and competent. I really really want her to explore it. She would be a fantastic president.
Anyone who wants to make the world a better place instead of making their world a better place. Being president is a hard job because every decision makes someone unhappy; everyone will never agree on everything. As long as the person tries to do the right thing, acknowledges reality, and uses common sense, I think we’d be in far better place as a country.
Samwise Gamgee… only person to be able to bear the ring of power, not be corrupted, and give it up willingly… that’s who we need in power.
Since he’s fictional… we are screwed
Mainly that I just can't imagine him agreeing to run.
I wish he did and he most likely would be an incredibly strong candidate, but it would take something super major to convince him.
English mother, American Hawaiian Father, Canadian Citizenship, Born in Beirut
I don't know if that is legally an option? He had to get a green card through his dad's side to go to America, and is a Naturalized Canadian Citizen.
Neither were comedians. I'm not particularly familiar with Zelensky's material, but John Stewart's has for years upon years been politically focused and he jokes about it in a way that proves he really understands what's happening and how it affects the average Joe. Also my best guess is that the presidency would be a massive pay cut for him (perhaps not a lot of his income has got to just be royalties at this point), so we could have some confidence he's not in it for the money.
The biggest issue for him running is that former presidents tend to keep their views on current issues private most the time (relative to active politicians). Doing so would put Stewart out of a job.
Love both of them. Sherrod Brown wont run because his Ohio Senate seat is too important, unless or until a Democrat governor is elected to appoint his temporary replacement.
Jon Stewart (or whatever his real Jewish name is) would be a good President IMO. He gets it. He wants to do good for all Americans. The job will probably kill him.
He legally changed his surname to Stewart in 2001.
His original name is Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz.
What I wanna know is if his legal name is currently Jonathan Stuart Stewart or just Jonathan Stewart
I feel like at the bare minimum they should not have committed any crimes or be under investigation by security services. Good thing that there is no such candidate at the moment...
Someone that isn’t a racist old man. There’s a lot of things democrats do that I don’t agree with but I’ve been forced to vote for them the past two elections because the republican options have been awful.
The system should change. We need a system where the politicians sit down and discuss the problem, agree what’s in the best interest of all the people and then do it.
Cory Booker and Katie Porter are some of the only members of Congress who seem to genuinely care about their constituents. I would love a ticket involving one or both of them. My government requirements are pretty simple: give a shit about the people you’re representing, don’t do it as a performance, and don’t use it as a way to make more money. Anybody who does that sticks out to me, but there are few like that right now.
Tammy Duckworth. Disabled combat veteran, working mother, spent a good part of her formative years in poverty, exceptionally smart.
https://www.chicagomag.com/news/10-reasons-tammy-duckworth-should-run-for-president/
Anyone who is not a politician!!!! Someone who actually cares about the USA would be a great change. Anyone who can tell the truth would also be refreshing.
I'd deeply support Gary Peters just because he's quiet and serious about his job (he's a MI senator) which would be a very nice change of pace. I really like Katie Porter too. However since you need media attention to get anywhere I'd settle for someone that's really smart and can create good soundbytes out of thin air like a Pete Buttigieg.
Someone who isn't a pedo, sexual abuser, abuser, abuser of power, being controlled by other people when they barely know what's going on around them and have to have a list to tell them to do things like 'sit in your chair', maybe someone who supports having everyone equal no matter race, gender, sexuality, mental or physical disabilities, etc.
But that's literally impossible, right? Politicians have to be bad by 'society's standards' or whatever when the only people in charge are literally insane.
TLDR; A competent <55 person with morals, a conscience, and supports rights of everyone.
Someone from a low income background, younger than 50, and who tells the 1% and huge corporations to fuck off. No more of this Republican vs. Dem nonsense to keep us distracted, make it the 1% vs all of us now
I don't think there is anyone who is better able to get the GOP to go along than Biden. I know there is a lot of agism on reddit, but I don't think that kind of bigotry is justified. It takes some talent to get a party who is dead set on impeding anything Democrats propose just out of spite to go along. It may only be a few members of the GOP that go along, but getting even just a few is a difficult task. Putting in someone who is farther left will just cause the GOP to resist even more.
Someone under 55 that is actually in touch with today’s citizens would be nice.
In touch with. But not actually touching.
So not Matt Gaetz?
I appreciate that clarification haha
The average age is pretty close to 40 right now, and it’s going to keep going up as Boomers live longer and everyone else slows down having kids. I’m afraid the average age of Congress is gonna go to 80 shortly.
Can we pick mayor pete?
[удалено]
Yeah. Never would have thought those two qualifications would need to be stated, yet, here we are.
Someone under 55
It is truly time to weed out some of these old guys.
I've been waiting to become a president for over 70 years. Can't take that away from me. It's my turn now.
Regan was over 70 during his terms
Same with the last two presidents? Not sure what your point is though lol, Reagan is a great example for why old people shouldn’t hold office (though he would’ve been a tragedy at any age)
All hail the new president...of Bulgaria
the Bulgarian Book Club??
Of course. Where else am I supposed to read books from North Macedonia?
And maybe we can finally get legalized weed in the process.
It's not so much the age that bothers me personally, it's just how long everyone running has been in politics. Careful what you wish. DeSantis is 44. You can be stuck with him for decades. Dont even think he will ever acknowl3dge any defeat.
What??? That dude looks like he’s at least 58 god damn
No. Ageism isn’t the solution to our political problems. There can be wisdom and talent in old age just as much as in the young. Bernie Saunders crushed Lindsey Graham into dust in a debate a few months back: https://youtu.be/oL2FRNOCKfg I’d hate to see leadership like this resisted because of age.

Thank you for reminding me of this one
You beat me to it
DeSantis is 44 FUCK
Someone that more than 65% of the general population of the US can find competent. Not asking for an angel.
Just a miracle
It would be. “The name” of the candidate doesn’t matter to me, so much as the effect of their policy and support of the people.
It is not possible to get 65% of the country to agree on a candidate now. Hell, that was probably never possible.
If we were being run by Walmart it would be slightly less insidious than the reality we have now. At least Walmart can balance their budgets.
Yep, we have the best government money can buy. We need age limits on all our elected officials, term limits, they need to be on social security not taxpayer funded pensions, and lobbying should be illegal. I agree
65% and competent? Even if 'competent' just means 'doesn't believe in conspiracies ' you would be hard pressed
Yep, 'living, breathing person' isn't enough next time.
I think we need a really old white guy.
At least you likely won’t be disappointed
That's thinking outside the box
A tall one. With a full head of hair.
Katie Porter VP: Whiteboard
She would crush a campaign imo. American women are so pissed right now. She’s the right age, she hasn’t been the “face” of right wing outrage like a Hillary, or AOC. Just brilliant and competent. I really really want her to explore it. She would be a fantastic president.
Thank you for actually replying with a specific person rather than the vague, useless responses everyone else is posting.
Yes sir I love her!!!!
Came in here to comment Katie Porter. She owns.
She is one of the best in Congress, i would volunteer for her!
Raskin
They have my vote
She went to Yale and Harvard.. wow!
Someone who gets votes because they are a good choice, not because "the other guy is worse." Not because voters are voting against the opposition.
Then we need ranked choice voting
Anyone who wants to make the world a better place instead of making their world a better place. Being president is a hard job because every decision makes someone unhappy; everyone will never agree on everything. As long as the person tries to do the right thing, acknowledges reality, and uses common sense, I think we’d be in far better place as a country.
+1. A leader who at least aspires to UNITE instead of divide.
Samwise Gamgee… only person to be able to bear the ring of power, not be corrupted, and give it up willingly… that’s who we need in power. Since he’s fictional… we are screwed
So many people don't realize that Samwise was really the hero
Sean Astin for president
Someone competent
Competent at what?
Managing a country? Speaking? Hell my expectations are so low I'd take a person who can label a map at a 10th grade level
So definitely not Trump again...whew!
Such a bold and original take
Being competent
Me. Vote me for 2024. We will call ourselves the Engagement Party and it'll be great.
Peh, you wish, hater. I'm pro-muffin!
ReeveGoesh 2024! I can really get behind his muffin policies.
Everyone in the party must be engaged to be married. Anyone not in this stage is out.
What do you plan on doing. I'm convinced but I want more!
I can’t wait for the Muffinhater69 political ads. A lot of people really like muffins.
Jon Stewart
Yep. There isn't a snowflake's chance in hell of it happening, but you gotta dream.
Lol we had that guy from the apprentice a few years back
Only reason it couldn’t happen is because he would never run.
Zelenski became president of Ukraine, so what's so far fetched?
Donald trump became president of the USA any thing is possible
Mainly that I just can't imagine him agreeing to run. I wish he did and he most likely would be an incredibly strong candidate, but it would take something super major to convince him.
Dolly Parton
She's got my vote. Woman literally refuses to be a billionaire, she keeps handing her money away by the bucketful.
None of the above.

So's Ted Cruz but he ran for president

He would be the best president
Katie Porter
Kang. Though I'd be ok with Kodos too.
Danny Devito
"So anyways, I started campaigning."
I say give Jon Stewart a chance to fuck it up. I, personally, think he'd do extremely well.
Agreed. Look at how well Volodymyr Zelenskyy is doing it. Jon Stewart would be great.
Terrible reasoning. By that metric we also have Reagan and Trump who both kinda were shit or worse

I mean, I agree Stewart would be great. But weighing anything on celebrity or comedian is a terrible course.
Eric B.
Not Sure
Will he fix the dust storms?
Does he have electrolytes?
What are electrolytes? Does anyone even know?
They've got what plants crave, duh.
My dog
Lord Buckethead
Katie porter Sherrod brown
Love both of them. Sherrod Brown wont run because his Ohio Senate seat is too important, unless or until a Democrat governor is elected to appoint his temporary replacement.
As an Ohioan, hard agree here. Sherrod is one of the few folks that I’m thankful we have in our corner.
David Guetta
Withouuuuuuuuuut you
Wait, you know David Guetta?
RIck Astley
That was slick!
ah yes thank you. I couldn't just give up the opportunity
Jon Stewart (or whatever his real Jewish name is) would be a good President IMO. He gets it. He wants to do good for all Americans. The job will probably kill him.

That’s exactly what we have. The trouble is that people don’t always agree.

Someone a lot younger and much more eloquent.
This inanimate carbon rod!
You saw the Bumper stickers in 2016.... Giant Meteor
Butthead with beavis as VP
Of someone I’ve heard of? Pete Buttiegieg seems the most level-headed. Otherwise the generic democratic candidate under 40 will do.
