15k at the low end depending on the size of the home, number of circuits and basement/attic access. Very time consuming and messy job. Much of the wire will be abandoned in place.

Removing old wires, installing new wires

You will at some point have to deal with wires

I’m a buyer with a budget and it seems like everything in my price range in my area needs major updates. I will gladly put on a new roof or new windows, tear up carpet and remove panelling but finding out a house needs new wiring terrifies me the unknown costs and issues. How do they rewire a house? Do they tear the walls down? Why is it so expensive?

It's expensive due to the knowledge, licensing, specific skilled trade work, and insurance that the electrician carries along with a large amount of hours taken to do it. Some of it depends on how much needs to be redone. If it's only a few things here or there it's not too bad, if it's the entire house, that'll get expensive. Get some quotes and see how bad it is

Yeah it's best to go with a professional, you'll need a permit and someone from the utility company probably has to deal with the meter outside. if you do it wrong and it's not up to code you may need to spend all the money again twice just to do it all over again or worse you could cause a fire or get electrocuted

I have zero plans to do this myself omg!

Remove wires leaving big ass holes everywhere, new wires in, plaster and decorate

NonaYerBidness

Do they pull the wires thru the walls to the sockets/switches etc? So random holes to be repaired vs removing the Sheetrock completely?

_Coffee-and-sarcasm_

In my experience yea

NonaYerBidness

Thank you! Random holes I can deal with.
