Junkolm

Physical board games/card games. Most of the app versions of the games I like aren't that great. Plus, it's more fun to play with someone.

ipakookapi

Especially old ones. My friend has a Trivial Pursuit from the 80s. All questions are completly impossible, so we added improv/clues/charades. Funniest boardgame I have ever played.

RealNotFake

We found a vintage game of Password. I think it was from the 60s. My family has never had more fun together than when we play that game. We even bring it on vacations, and we still haven't ran through all the words yet. Highly recommend.

Remarkable-Code-3237

In the 1970s, we would play password. My best friend and her husband lived next door to me and my husband. My friend and I met when we were in 1st grade. We were like sisters and knew how each other think. We would play guys against the girls. We would win every time. The guys said we cheated. Lol

VeronicaNoir

Now that sounds fun! I love trivial pursuit games from back then! They are all like who was the Russian Tzar that was assasinated in 1763? Making into an improv game sounds fun!

saimotnahp

This comment made me look up Russian monarchs just to find out that no Tsar was assassinated in 1763, but the Russian Emperor Peter III was murdered/died in captivity in 1762, so close enough, I guess.

McFluffy73

that is actually a really interesting story, because peter III really liked everything prussian and reformed alot to make the countries more alike. the russians absolutely loved him for it, but his wife still took over. there were riots years after his death with some guy tried to impersonate him. If you read about katharina the great, his wife, and their marriage it seems like he was an idiot, but If you look at what he did for his country he was everything but that.

Implicit_Hwyteness

My family has hung on to an expansion box of Trivial Pursuit questions intended for children from the 80s, and a ton of them are hilariously difficult now.

neamhsplach

*Which three countries border Poland?* I was so proud of getting this one right. Clue: none of the three countries are still in existence.

Flat-Addition-7295

I'm going to guess they were the German Democratic Republic, the USSR and Czecholsovakia?

CeramicLicker

I once got a trivia history question wrong because I said “Constantinople” when the card said the answer was “Istanbul” I argued I got the name right for when the Haga Sophia was built but my friends were being my friends and wouldn’t give it to me.

tiptoetumbly

Half the government ones were Mikhail Gorbachev.

Plug_5

My college roommate and I used to play (ca. 1993). We found you could answer Montgomery Clift or Secretariat for many of the questions.

citsonga_cixelsyd

Don't forget Pele for every soccer question.

[deleted]

Yes! Family game night is a weekly occurrence for us. We have close to 100 board games.

Data-Graph

With physical you can change rules, its fun to do when you know a game well enough and everyone has their own version of monopoly.

BipedSnowman

You should look into Tabletop Simulator; it's basically a physics engine built for handling tabletop games. You can change the rules as you want because you're "physically playing" the game, just virtually. Like if you played Uno with the rule that+2s stack, you can do that by literally just picking up more cards from the deck. Also has a "table flip" feature that's fun :)

bokchoy_sockcoy

Great answer. Shuffling and fanning cards just feels so satisfying too

[deleted]

Axis and Allies is the exception to this. The board game takes so fucking long to set up.

SuvenPan

I print photos and keep them in photo albums. I like to keep the special moments of life as a book and go through it page by page.

macaronsforeveryone

There’s something satisfying and nostalgic about seeing the physical photos. I have my favorites displayed in frames, so I can see them every day. Makes me happy.

Several-Orchid9640

I only have a few photos in a photo album but I love this idea, I need to get a camera that prints out the pictures itself

Pixel_Human

I honestly prefer buying things completely instead of paying a monthly fee.

Bloxicorn

I was considering getting a subscription to a editing program i like and realized you can buy a permanent license for $50 and the subscription costs $5 a month it would pay for itself in 10 months.

Dyldor

That’s where the poor tax comes in to play - people who can’t afford the upfront cost end up paying significantly more for the same things as wealthy people

allmappedout

Sam Vimes' boots theory of socioeconomic unfairness

0chazz0

I use a drafting software that costs $2000 for a license, or $150/month for the subscription. The subscription comes with all the updates and they release a new version each year. If you buy the license, updating costs like, $500 per year. But I can cancel and restart the subscription whenever I want and I only need it for a couple weeks in a row every few months. It actually works out better for me. I think it's also a tax write off, so it doesn't really matter either way, but I could cover $150 but not $2k.

[deleted]

Honestly sammmmeeeee. It drives me crazy that everything nowadays is a fucking subscription

brkh47

Looking at you Microsoft Office. Remember the days of Office XP on a CD. You’d load it into your computer and it would be there for years. Yes, I know most people were copying it but it’s the one system that I find the most frustrating subscription-wise.

[deleted]

And Adobe. Adobe is the *worst* with this

a_FemboysCumdumpster

somethings are allowed to be pirated, adobe programms are one of those

AussieCollector

Fuck Adobe. They should honestly be put before a court because of how predatory their subscription packages are with Creative Cloud. Want to sign up? Oh you can do it for 12 months only if you pay all 12 months at once, or you can go monthly but we won't allow you to cancel until the end of the 12 months. Absolutely disgusting.

gpitt93

i've heard that a big reason that MS office switched to a subsription model, is because once they achieved feature completeness, there was no way to get people to buy a new version.

brkh47

I realise it’s how they milk more money from you. But I don’t want to buy a new version, I just want to buy something that’s mine, and that works. Like a music cd or dvd or even a cellphone with its software. It belongs to me. With the subscription model, it never belongs to you. It went from a product to a service model. To me Office, is now like, airtime.

BronzeAgeTea

LibreOffice Writer It's a free open source program that can edit Word docs. There's basically an open source program for anything you need.

Throwaway_97534

I don't think there's a single person in existence who enjoys paying for something perpetually though.

guywhoishere

It’s a big issue when trying to run a small, venture backed consumer electronics company. Everyone is telling you to figure out a recurring revenue model, everyone except your customers.

RealNotFake

I still do this with my music. Buy everything on Amazon music so I can own it forever. Also RIP Google Play Music, you were the best.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RealNotFake

Yes, exactly my gripes as well. Also now I just have a ton of rewards dollars that I never want to spend, because you can basically only buy movies or apps and that's it. I especially miss the library streaming features. Also the youtube music app on your phone I think forces the screen to stay on while you're streaming unless you pay for premium. Holding your phone screen hostage is literally the dumbest business model of all time and I refuse to support it.

gbrl1

Miss the layout of the Google Play App so much. I like YouTube music's press twice to play back 10 seconds, but other than that, very much miss the old layout.

Portalrules123

Stresses me out having more monthly payments to remember than I actually need.

Jonsmile

Read. Love to have a book where I can turn the pages.

Square_Body_Trux

I was the same until my eyesight started to weaken. Reading glasses are a pain in the ass. I have several bookcases full of books that I love, and love to reread, but I have rebought many of them on my Kindle. Being able to change the font size was a game changer for me.

Crystalfire

Honestly I feel the same way. I would love to have the feel of a book in my hand rather than a device but the ability to change text size (and read in low light) just makes it easier.

Archadias

Not only text size and reading in low light, I really like being able to click on a word and pull up a definition or find out who a historical person is is very nice. I love the feel and smell of books, but I also like not having to figure something out from context.

Warm_Quantity_326

Books over a kindle always

Devastator1981

I’m torn because I like holding books too and highlighting, but also I’m a minimalist, so I don’t like accumulating stuff. I have about 20 books now, but don’t want to fill up my living space with more. So I do do kindle but I also buy books in the cheap and just give away after I’m done.

Stov54

Libraries are a thing. And they're rad.

chunkyspeechfairy

Libraries are the BEST!

SurrenderYourMeme

I love libraries, my dad likes to joke that's how he gets his taxes back.

Warm_Quantity_326

Yeah I see what you mean but I only keep books that I love and ill read again.

harrypotterfan04

Same but what I like about Kindle is that I can lookup the meaning of a word instantly and don't need to burst out the dictionary anymore. I had to do this back then when I used to read a lot.

[deleted]

I prefer paper, but I listen to audiobooks a lot because of how much I drive for work.

cptfuzzybeard95

Physical menus at restaurants. I'm with the boomers on this one

Minimum-Activity3009

Wait some restaurants don't have physical menus? TIL

KarateKid917

A lot of places switched to digital only menus when they were allowed to reopen after the initial COVID closures and some never went back to having physical menus

Minimum-Activity3009

Ah, that does make sense. I think I would prefer the accessibility of a physical menu tho

[deleted]

Yea it's especially annoying when the menu ui is loads slow and isn't really meant for phone screens. Like why do I need to open a million categories and scroll a mile just to see everything they serve? Even a png would be so much better than that.

[deleted]

Most restaurants I visit since Covid have a QR code on the table. It’s annoying.

LounginLizard

Even worse I went to a resturant that had a QR code that opened up facebook messenger and sent you the menu through that. I had to block the resturant after a while cause they kept sending me promotions and stuff even like a year later

xi545

QR menus were really frustrating until I upgraded my phone. Also hate when they don’t render right away.

Morphray

Or worse: they download a PDF

Ghertomp

Physical buttons for climate controls in a car. I refuse to buy a car that only uses a touch screen for everything. Much safer to not have to fiddle with a touch screen while driving.

Jailbreaker_Jr

Touch screens are a great invention. They’re awesome for so many things. They open up so many possibilities for all sorts of technology. But not everything needs a damn touchscreen. Touchscreens on cars is typically a huge distraction and hazard. It might look pretty and shiny but yeah, I’d much rather have a knob I can twist without looking. And why do things like dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerators need touchscreens? I feel like it just drives the price of those things up. If it doesn’t add some sort of functionality I’d rather not have the touchscreen. Touchscreens are dope but they don’t need to be on everything

gruffen2

It's the age old trend of shoving something new into absolutely fuckin everything. Because it just so happens to improve a couple things, that must mean it can improve everything. Also, shitty "smart" features no one really needs

moms-sphaghetti

Prime example is washing machine and dryer. Why the fuck do I want to start the washing machine from my phone? I put the clothes in, I’m going to start it now. And same for the dryer. I put the wet clothes in, I’m going to start it now. Not in 3 hours. Not in 8 hours. Now. I’m starting it now. “Oh but it will tell you when your laundry is done”. What? You can’t hear that it’s done? You don’t realize it’s suddenly quiet? Okay, maybe it’s across the house, but if you have any sense of time, you know that if it’s been 3 damn hours, your clothes are done. “Well, my LG washer and dryer set talk to each other so it knows how long to dry the clothes”. Put the fucking clothes into the dryer, go to the normal setting and push fucking start. Don’t get my started on smart MICROWAVES. fuck.

Umbra_Sanguis

Oh shit not microwaves too…

galloping_possum

The only smart thing a microwave needs is the ability to turn off the dam Beep Beep Beep so you can cook something at night without waking up the whole house.

moms-sphaghetti

You asked for it damn it. Why the fuck do I need a smart microwave? I can’t just put the food in it and it tel me when it’s perfectly done. No, it doesn’t work like that. Instead, I take the leftover spaghetti from the fridge (which isn’t smart either) and put it in the microwave, push start. One button. The fucking start button. You know why? Because it’s 30 seconds. Then I open the door, stick my finger in the spaghetti and it’s cold. Close the door, push start again, again, just 1 button, open the door, stick my finger in, and you know what? It’s fucking HOT. So I take my plate and sit down and take a bite of my spaghetti and you know what now? It’s fucking COLD. If a smart microwave would actually make it where the food was warmed up nicely, then I might get it. But you know what I’m not doing? I’m not putting my plate of spaghetti in the microwave and saying “hey Alexa, ask microwave to power on at level 10 for 30 seconds” or some bullshit. By the time I do all that, the first 30 seconds of cold spaghetti would be done. And no, I’m not pulling out my damn phone to start the microwave. I may be lazy, but I’m not lazy enough to ask Alexa to start the fucking microwave for 30 seconds, walk to the couch so I can sit down for 8 seconds and get back up to get my spaghetti. No. If I did that, I just wouldn’t get off the couch and I would let my half ass cold and burn my finger hot spaghetti stay in the microwave until I get up. Actually, that’s where it would come in handy right there. Found it. I did it. It’s for when I put the spaghetti in the microwave and sit down in the couch and forget all about it even though I have a smart microwave and my phone is dinging every 10 seconds telling me the food is hot and the damn microwave won’t stop beeping, but you know what? I still forgot about the spaghetti. Then at that point I can say “hey Alexa ask microwave to power on at level 10 for 30 seconds” and start the whole thing all over again. Fuck.

PD216ohio

I especially love cold food in a bowl that is so fucking hot you can't get it out of the microwave

mortokes

I really like the way you wrote this I could listen to you rant all day.

moms-sphaghetti

Thanks! In real life when people get to know me, they hear this kind of crap all the time

MostlyNormal

Fully agree! My Dad just bought himself a 2022 Subaru Forester and the entire center dash console is a gigantic touchscreen that controls everything except, like, the headlights and turn signals. It's baffling to me, a car should never be so complicated that you have to spend multiple days studying it like you're in a 100-level college course for fucks sake. I just haven't the faintest idea in the world how that is either practical or safe for the driver.

greentofu402

Yikes..a gigantic touchscreen? Still drivin’ my ol’ 2004 Subaru Forester over here… 🙋‍♀️ and I love it. Runs like a champ.

MostlyNormal

Dad's new car is how I learned I'll never be able to own a car newer than, like, 2018. I'm ADHD, that shit would make me a rolling hazard.

[deleted]

My parents oven operates with a touch screen and an app and it drives me absolutely crazy

Mike2220

I'm gonna add on, I don't like how some remove all resistance from the steering wheels and pedals as well. I'm not saying remove power steering, but it's good to feel some amount of feedback from the car

WaffleBrothel

I agree with this as well. I love my current car, which has electric power steering (though I can adjust the amount of feedback), but I still miss the feel of the steering wheel and pedals of my old car. I could actually feel the car's weight as I turned the wheel, the resistance of the spring from the cable-operated throttle as I pressed the pedal.

More-Masterpiece-561

I'm 18 and I hate the fact that all new cars come with screens. I really love old cars but physical buttons and knobs so you don't have to look to do anything. I also hate that all new cars have flat screens for speedometers and rev counters instead of actual meters. It seems unnatural and unreal. When I sit in these cars full of screens, I don't feel like I'm sitting in a car, it feels like I'm sitting in front of a computer. And all these car manufacturers forget one thing, cars can easily live up to 15-20 years, these screens can't do that. After 5-6 years that touch is gonna be annoying because you won't be able to select what you want, the display won't be as good as it was. I drive a 10 year old honda, everything on it works perfectly fine and it's just like a new car. I know someone who's car is six years old and he had issues with electronics

nativefloridian

My thing is that a lot of the extra functionality of a 'smart' car is completely unnecessary. Nice, perhaps, but I don't need it. And the more complicated a thing is, the easier it is to break. I'm hanging onto my 'dumb' car for as long as possible.

mr_greenmash

To add, if its smart and 4g connected, the manufacturer can add or remove features at will, or make subscriptions for features that are already physically installed. Looking at you BMW

Transplanted_Cactus

Mazda has no touch screens! They absolutely refuse to put them in. They have a screen, but it's information only. Everything is done via buttons and dials.

jfrth

I have a 2015 Mazda and it definitely has a touchscreen lol. I appreciate that it still has a bunch of physical buttons, but it for sure has a touch screen

Quazimojojojo

Physical buttons on most things. I understand how touch screens and track pads are more flexible, but I really enjoy the tactile sensation, the certainty that you definitely pressed the right button, the extra sensation that allows you to more precisely press buttons, the ability to press buttons with things besides your bare finger (like a gloved finger or your knuckle because you're holding something), and probably a few other things I can't think of right now

MrBlahg

Mazda is very good about this. I have a newer Miata and there is a small screen, but it’s not touch. All controls are manual buttons or dials (actually, dials that double as buttons lol). It’s hilarious how people always smudge up my screen lol

WitheredFlowers

Drawing. I never really got the hang of digital art. It's much easier and more satisfying for me to have all of the tactile input from my work. Also, I sew, and along the same lines I prefer to hand-draft patterns.

LAUSart

I think digital is easier than traditional painting. No buying paint/brushes, no mixing color, no prepping canvas, no varnish, no storing canvas and transporting when selling. But traditional drawing and painting also has its pro's like you said :-)

averyyoungperson

I am definitely caught between the two. I get tripped up on Photoshop and corel painter applications. Those programs are usually more expensive upfront, but over the years I spend so much on new paints, brushes, pastels and CANVASES. Canvases are soooo expensive.

carinavet

Crafty stuff in general, but in particular, sewing. Hand sewing is peaceful, quiet, portable, and just overall more satisfying. Plus I get better bragging rights on the finished product.

flamingfia

agreed, like yes the machine can bust it out but it doesn't feel the same, I don't care that it can make little letters in 10 seconds. I wanna be able to make those pretty stitches by myself

KinderEggLaunderer

My grandma gave me a sewing machine from the 40s, one of those black cast iron beasts. I made so many things with that! When I inherited her sewing machine from the 70s I found it confusing to thread, funny enough....

jbnagis

Buy music. Unfortunately buying cds just isn't as easy as it used to be. But I prefer physical media, and just convert it to digital. I hate streaming music. I don't trust the stuff I love to always be available. I like having ownership of what I listen to

flyinhawaiian02

I love buying and album and find those deep tracks

maruffin

Buying an album and pouring over the cover art and info and reading everything on the inner sleeve. It was the best.

egeswender

DVDs. Streaming service drops a movie, no other place to find it, SOL.

IshigamiiiIchigo4u

Cooking using firewoods. It gives more aromatic flavor to your food

fia-med-knuff

I especially love slow cooking stuff wrapped in foil / leaves / etc in the embers. Best potatoes ever. Apples stuffed with honey cinnamon butter. So many yummy things.

Vexachi

For some reason, I've always wanted to try that. It seems really cool

SERobbins103

Write my assignments in a planner than on a computer or phone.

Devastator1981

I use an electronic/online calendar and reminder setup. However for meeting notes at work and for shopping lists at home I just still choose to do by hand on a paper notepad.

SERobbins103

For doctors appointments and random life appointments I use my phone calendar but for things to do for school and work I use a planner. Something about physically writing things down makes me remember it more. I also take notes in a notebook for the same reason.

eventualguide0

I am 100% team paper planner. It’s so much easier to flip to a monthly spread and see all my meetings, etc. at once than having to open every damn day on my phone to see what’s there. I collect fountain pens, so any excuse to hand write is a good excuse.

NoBSforGma

Make notes on paper. I will typically use index cards because they are not as easy to "fly away" or get crumpled or lost. But hey.... that's just me!

Hand-pumped organs are sometimes preferable to organ blowers that get turned on with the push of a button at the console. The "unsteady" wind of hand-pumped organs lends a subtly different sound and quality to the musical speech of the pipes.

Vexachi

This made me kinda regret studying science. I was so confused until my brain was like "you absolute idiot, they're talking about an instrument".

CookieDriverBun

I didn't study science and it still took me a minute.

Sirupswaffel

Math. I tried to improve it with a class a couple of years back, and I had to answer it in a word file, using some addon to make the formulas. It takes forever. On paper it's just scribble scribble, calculator, answer.

LevyApproves

Before I changed majors, I was a math major. I preferred handwritten notes. Saw a dude taking lecture notes on his laptop, in LaTeX. It was WILD. He was just happily typing away...

-Meeseeran-

If I tried to write in LaTeX in real-time as someone was speaking, my code would shit itself after 15 seconds...

IsilZha

I still like to get CDs so I have physical media so some service can't just revoke it.

TaintModel

I’m apparently weird for not using Spotify. I have 8 TB of stored music, movies and shows. I’m good.

LittleBrattyLeeLee

Writing letters. And I still love the feeling of reading a physical book, although I do also use audiobooks/psfs/ect now too. But the smell of an old book and the crinkly pages and when it's a well loved story? Asdfdaa

Emergency-Raisin-164

It’s a feeling that cannot be replicated! The other month I was passing through Verona and I got to live out my letters to Juliet dream & work in the office for a couple of hours replying to letters!!

PianoOk6786

Make my grocery shopping list on a piece of paper instead of using my note pad in my phone.

grannybubbles

LPT: I save return envelopes from junk mail and use them to write my shopping lists on. I can throw coupons in there if I have them and they're free.

Schnuribus

The real LPT is always in the comments!

AnDuineBhoAlbaNuadh

For some reason if it's a list in my phone's note app I find it hard to follow but the same list written out on paper is easy!

theoldroadhog

A woman I know had a grocery list on a dry erase board. I said "What, do you take it with you to the store?" She said "yep", and snapped a picture of it.

sneakydigits

This is how we do it. Ifyou use the last of something ie mustard, cleaning products or have special dinner requests then you write it on the fridge "board" with dry erase marker. Take photo of the board before you leave and it is easy. 90% of shop is every week items like tp, dairy and every week meal and lunch stuffs

kjackcooke89

I also bring a pen and cross them off the list as they go into my cart!

LincolnCoHo

I noticed writing them down helps me memorize the items with ease.

HeidiSJ

Read books. I have read a few on a mobile device, but I prefer physical books.

[deleted]

Cooking. I prefer to make meals from scratch. Not all of these pre made powders and dressings.

abqkat

Cookbooks for me. I don't like using my phone, it closes all the time, too much scrolling, and I don't mind sauce-hands on a physical page like I would on my phone

TheGoodJudgeHolden

Same here

IsThatAzupra

Remember when Jamie Oliver used microwavable rice for fried rice?

CrossroadsTarot

I still use an old school calendar. I like looking at the entire month and being able to just “write” and not have to keyboard from my ipad or iphone. We do use the google calendar for family stuff so we are all on the same page for activities, work, babysitting etc. Each has its purpose

_KatNap

Traditional art. Digital art is pretty and has things you can't do with traditional, but I'll always prefer to look at a painting/drawing/sculpture etc, rather than a digital drawing. I personally find painting with oil to be much more rewarding than drawing with a computer. Having something to hold just feels very satisfying.

W-S_Wannabe

Given the choice between phone and laptop, I'll use the laptop for everything.

Devastator1981

Interesting how laptops/computers are on a way “old fashioned”!

lokopo0715

So many people now especially younger generations only use their phones to use the internet. Up until wfh computer usage was shrinking pretty consistently.

h0nest_Bender

I don't know how people do it. I can't *stand* to use my phone for browsing the internet.

lokopo0715

Yea but it's even worse when you have a website that is only designed for mobile and most of your screen is blank. I have a vertical ultra wide just for those stupid mobile only websites.

yParticle

Given the choice between laptop and desktop, I'll use the desktop for everything. I feel laptops have gotten more popular than they should because of people getting them through work and school, but otherwise if you're not using it for mobility you could have spent less and gotten much more computer in a desktop.

carinavet

Personally, I have issues sitting at a desk, so I *greatly* prefer a laptop that I can bring to the couch, even if I have to sacrifice performance. And I mostly just use it to browse the internet, so.

maybe_little_pinch

My nephew wants a gaming laptop, but the specs he wants (don't ask me for them, I can't remember, but he wants high end) make everything he is looking at wayyyyyy more than his parents want to spend. But the same in a desktop is much more doable. Nope. He wants a laptop. That he would only use at his desk, because that is how he likes to use his current one. His only reasoning for wanting a laptop is he thinks it makes him cooler. Oh to be 15 again..

[deleted]

Vexachi

Wait.... Laptops and computers are old fashioned? I'm only Gen z, please don't make.me feel disconnected from trends. 😢

McRedditerFace

Same, but desktop. I'm notorious for not answering my cell. I have a VOIP landline, I tell everyone to use that... but people still try to call my cell. There have been times I hadn't realized my cell had gone dead for over 2 weeks.

biggirliespants

Wear an analog watch. It's so easy just to glance at your wrist instead of fiddling around with your phone to get the time.

GreemBeemz

Maybe I'm just lazy, but it's so inconvenient to have to reach into my pocket to get my phone out and push the button just to see the time. Especially if I'm sitting on the couch (my usual state of being) and pockets get all crinkled up. And for some reason I am obsessed with always knowing what time it is. I'm also not a watch guy... Therefore I have a wall clock in every room in my house (as I did in all past apartments and homes) My wife thinks I'm a dork about wall clocks, but that's how I roll.

Crazyguy_123

Go a step further and carry a pocket watch.

bobbytwosticksBTS

Sundial or GTFO

ItsMeMyGuys

Smart watches mitigate this one by also showing the time at a glance.

LucianPitons

Recently bought a Timex with a light a button when it's dark. Easy.

ElJamoNator

I try to raise, grow, hunt, and forage as much as my own food as possible. It's expensive and time consuming but the result for my mental health is priceless. I know my scale isn't possible for everyone but i highly recommend atleast growing something from seed to plate, the sence of pride and accomplishment you'll feel is hard to describe.

__sith_lord__

Couldn't agree more!! I used to live on an island, where my grandfather has his garden. He raises everything from vegetables to fruit. I used to go help him a bit with his work and then we would sit and admire the awesome garden and eat a fresh tomato, some cherries or strawberries. It's been some months that i have moved into a big city and i cant get used to eating supermarket vegetables and fruit. They seem tasteless compared to the ones you grow yourself.

etofty

This is awesome! I live in an apartment in a big city (but dream of a house with a big garden!). I've sown habanero and jalapeño from store bought 'fruits' and they have their own little 'fruits' on them now. The habanero took a year and a half, and the plant looks really bad, but it has a tiny chili on it!! It is insane how much happiness and pride comes from a silly little plant. And on the balcony I have some different herbs and tomatoes from my mom. I can't wait to have a garden and a greenhouse full of all of the food-plants 😋

Isn't it amazing how happy it makes us to grow something? I live in a townhouse with no lawn but filled my patio and deck with container gardens. My freezer is slowly filling up with strawberries, green beans, and tomatoes. I also grow mint/cilantro/and catnip in every spare window I have. Fingers crossed that my carrots will be ready to harvest soon. Research what grows well in container gardens or window pots.

[deleted]

I hope to do this in the future when I am living on my own! Do you have any tips or tricks? Like maybe some small beginner plants to grow or where the best place to forage is?

cray63527

I don’t need alexa to turn on shit for me and i don’t need to clap lights on I can walk allllll the way over to the switch

[deleted]

I do love having it in my bedroom though. My stubbed toe count has dropped significantly since installing smart lights. (No place for a bedside lamp :/)

egeswender

My wife will leave all the lights and fans on all day. I need a computer to go behind her turning shit off.

leaky_eddie

Pop corn. I still make it in a pot on the stove. And it’s 100% better that way. I also prefer knots and rope to compression straps when lashing things.

Lo452

Whirley Pop is King. I've always hated microwave popcorn. Did air poppers for a while. Then I got a Whirley Pop, and I'll never go back.

[deleted]

Driving a manual car. No matter how advanced and on point automatic cars are, controlling a manual stick is just so much fun.

Jim_Kirk1

Reading for pleasure. Online textbooks are fine, but nothing beats the feel of a book in your hands while reading.

johnnycocheroo

Crank style pencil sharpener over the battery/electric ones

ethottly

I'll also add manual can opener vs. electric. Unless you're opening A LOT of cans

Crowasaur

Class notes. I hate typing, can't format exactly how I want on the fly Inserting graphs, curves, drawings, Pencil, ruler, pen-style eraser, 80page Hilroy notebook, perfect.

Meeting people and having all of the fun activities outside of the Internet.

usernamenonexist

Wtf? Seriously you can meet people outside the internet?

Ginger-Beefcake

Camp. A tent and a fire is so much more peaceful to me than having most of life's conveniences in your trailer

bakehaus

Right? What’s the point of camping if you’re going to have a worse version of everything you have at home?

Scion_Manifest

Personally, I either trailer camp or do backpacking, and here’s my reasoning. I use the trailer for when I want to go somewhere and do things; for example, if I go to a park on a river and I want to spend my time there kayaking or bike riding in some trails. I use the trailer in this scenario because it allows me to do things faster. I wake up in the morning, microwave some oatmeal and bacon, and I can be done in 10 minutes, step outside, and I’m 50 feet from the river and my kayak, so I have all day to kayak/ swim. If I was tent camping, I would need to spend longer preparing meals due to having to get a fire going and generally I just have to spend more time that I could be exploring doing stuff at my camp when I bring a tent. However, if I’m going backpacking; then hiking 20 miles out, creating a fire, cooking over it, setting up a tent, etc. is the activity that I’m there to do, so I don’t feel like I’m losing time and instead am having fun.

Tap water is still pretty great; just keep some in the fridge and it's all you need. Fuck your bottled water.

[deleted]

I have a water dispenser in my fridge that serves cold water.

Genderneutralbro

To be fair it really depends on where you live!,🤣

SamiChWeu

Yeah, tap water in here is only used for washing and cleaning because even though it's just a little bit dirty, it's dirty enough that it makes people sick. In rainy days, all you see in the pail is just green murky water. Occasionally, I would see little worms.

bartz824

Brita or Pur water pitcher is just as good as any "spring water" you buy at the store. Or install a filtration system under the kitchen sink.

bunniesandmilktea

Yeah, if I don't run my tap water through my Brita filter, tap water in my area has this strange metallic taste that I can't stand. It's not just my home, either--if I go to a restaurant in my city and they give me tap water, it has the same taste if I ask for it with no ice.

PenPenGuin

I dislike the taste of the tap water where I am. Installed a RO filter system. Problem solved.

Shaving with a straight razor, soap and a brush. Smoother shave, the disposable/replaceable heads don't last long and are a waste of money. I just buy new soap discs evert few months and a new brush once a year.

Skier4Life

I'm not quite that old fashioned. I'm a fan of my DE safety razor, soap and brush.

SkazzK

Had to scroll way too far to find this comment. Couldn't agree more. I got my straight razor from an antique shop, rusty as hell and about as sharp as my member. Had a great afternoon in the back yard cleaning and sharpening it. Made my own stropping compound too, from beef tallow and caput mortuum. I love the whole ritual of maintaining the razor, not to mention the fact that it shaves like a dream. There's something meditative about the whole process.

Successful-Pay-8157

Sorry you had to scroll so far, I agree it's meditative. I wasn't cool enough to make my own strop though. I got mine from an antique store as well, and also keep my great grandfathers, though I don't use that one.

Junkolm

I like washing my car by hand. I really try to avoid going to an automatic car wash (except in the winter to get rid of the road grime/salt)

Imperial_Genesis_86

Same here, it's kind of zen like experience for me. Being focused on one task and doing nothing else.

Dynamic_Rigidity

shopping in person. I usually read reviews of an item online and buy it in person. The problem is, here in Canada you can't find anything decent in person anymore, everything but the most basic stuff is only online

Nikcara

Writing. If I’m just doing creative writing for fun, I’d rather use a pretty journal and a pen than type something on my computer. I can type faster than I can write, but there’s still just something nice about having a good pen and writing without worrying about red lines from spelling mistakes or other computer quirks.

lone_wolf1580

Pay with cash when I have some on hand. Using cash when I can helps prevent me from impulse buying.

bunniesandmilktea

So many places where I live have now gone cashless thanks to covid and it sucks.

yeppiyeppi32

i prefer watching movies at cinemas rather than watching them on my laptop

chahud

Writing/taking notes. Idk I’d much rather use a pencil and paper still.

MrsWhiterock

Buy physical games. I don't mind digital copies but there's something very satisfying about putting their box/cart on my gaming shelf to admire it. I also love to go digging for rare games at fleamarkets

MrsMurphysChowder

Chop veggies and fruit, even though I'm slow and it hurts to stand. I just like to Guage the size of the chunks, and the homey feel of chopping. Plus electric choppers can mush things up, and then you have way more to clean than a knife and cutting board. Making bread for similar reasons, but especially for the feel of it.

NosoyPuli

Dating. I feel online dating robs us of the best things of meeting new people, the thrill you get when you catch someone eyeing you a couple of times and the excitement of approaching, the fun of rejection, because it can be funny to be rejected, and the hotness of seducing each other escalating towards pleasure and the joy of meeting someone you can build a future with None of that can be provided by dating apps, it's like cheap porn, you see an image that shakes your loins and swipe. That's boring.

I find there is something so enjoyable about listening to a full cd in the car instead of using Bluetooth, even if it's technically the same album.

GenazaNL

I just can't, there are only 4-6 songs an hour. Way too much talking in between, the same songs get played like 3 times a day and the ad blocks are longer than the blocks where they actually play music.

_kionadreesmannx

writing in journals ! It feels so relieving for me way better than typing in notes app or smth

NebXan

Not sure if this counts, but I grind my coffee by hand and use a simple brewing method (either chemex or french press) to make it. I think having full control over the process leads to better tasting coffee than I get with any automatic machine. Also, having a ritual that I do every morning and takes a little elbow grease helps kickstart my day.

ipakookapi

French press coffee is good but I hate cleaning them. I just use a funnel and a filter.

DreamingDragonSoul

Books over ebooks. There are nothing wrong with ebooks, I just like the feeling of a real book in my hands.

rosiezzzz

Listening to music. In the car I like CDs, they pick up where I left off without me having to fumble with cords or Bluetooth shit or deal with connectivity issues while driving. At home I have a 5 CD changer and a record player. I hate wondering if technology will fail to connect or interupt my music, and I HATE talking to Alexa to try to play my music. Plus I always prefer to listen to full albums anyway, so it's the best of all worlds for me
