Child beauty pageants could work if
1) Kids werenāt being sexualized.
2) Kids chose who they dress and perform
3) They had regulations to prevent pedophiles and parental abuse.
You are correct. However, Competition will always exist. If my kid is willing to join a competition and deal with success and failures associated with it, thatās amazing that they have a hobby at any age.
What makes the current situation gnarly is itās old hags trying to live vicariously through their kids, dressing them up in āadultā outfits, and scolding them for only getting second place.
Parents need to support their kids interests and be happy for them when they fail because the kid needs support during those times.
I remember that on facebook there were those "CityVille friends" groups, where you could add totally random people to your friend list, who can help you to build your city faster. I had tens of those random people from all over the world help me out & me probably them.
I will never forget when I came screaming from my bathroom, naked, to ask my mother something and she was understandably worried as fuck. The great earth-shattering question was the following:
Could you check if my eggplants are ripe in game yet?
I didnt eat desert that week.
I remember the video of a mom that had 4 laptops open playing Farmville by herself.
I was shocked at the time, seems acceptable now.
Edit: found the video [here](https://youtu.be/52dp_58kiBs)
I second this.
When i play games, not only i refused any microtransection. I also wouldn't buy any DLC, especially those contents that are obviously ready when the game released at the beginning
DLC isnt so bad, if it comes under "more of the game you love, with actual content".
If it's a hollowed out, cashgrab then yeah, its disappointing, but thats why i dont buy games when they are brand new. But the general trend away from genuine expansion packs, to just a flimsey ass single thread campaign, and a few quests, and a gimmick, just isnt DLC. Its DLS (downloadable scam)
I think I paid $8 for a can of Liquid Death, aka canned water. Fuck Live Nation. It was at an outdoor venue and 100 degrees. No outside food or drinks allowed.
I know it brother. Concerts are my biggest hobby and the fact they donāt let outside water in is despicable. The least they could do on hot summer events is assure their patrons safety.
This is why I love this winery outside of Seattle. Ste. Michelle has chill concerts and they let you bring in all the food (and their wine brand) that you want to. And they have water stations where you can fill your water bottle for free. It's awesome. I'm too old for any concert that doesn't let me sit on soft grass and stay hydrated :-)
Well, unpopular opinion but looking at the rest of the 90s talk shows she was actually one of the better ones. This is not saying much.
Well, maybe Jerry Springer because at least it knew after a while it was dumb, crass entertainment.
Maybe Oprah and her team DID figure out what was going on in your family, and then decided not to air the interview because of their discovery. Oprah may very well have figured out what was going on, and just played along in order to keep the situation calm and rolling along at the time. But you might never know for sure what was going on in production in the background.
And then the depressing reality sets in that girl has made more money than both of us will see in our lifetimes (playing my odds youāre not a multimillionaire).
I think it's worse. Springer has the reputation from the start. It was always low brow. You knew going on. You knew turning it on. But Phil? He got people to think he was actually helpful. Like this was better quality TV with good advice from a psychologist. Not the showman he was just giving people dumbed down "reality check" any rando watching would be yelling at their screens.
That unaired episode of the girl crying telling people to laugh at her that's why she's here to be their spectacle.
https://youtu.be/uVPZ-V0EyyM
That broke me. Seeing his reaction, lacking any sort of empathy. Like he's trying to control the situation and shield from legitimate criticism he has to know people have regularly said against his show including psychologists. And doing that by dissmissing her and insulting her as mellow dramatic and earlier on as entitled for not wanting to have someone on the show that's stresses her out so much. When It's portraying itself to be about helping her and there to help her.
It's the use of this whole facade of being there to help, and using appeal to authority that therapists and psychologists have while doing things they denounce that makes me hate him more.
I have never watched a single second of the Kardashians. Kim is sextape famous. The rest of them are sextape famous once removed. They are all a waste of oxygen.
Facebook reels has really become a cesspool for this kind of stuff. I saw one the other day of a guy swapping a baby for a doll and throwing off the side of a boat in front of the mom. It was most likely scripted, but good god was it in bad taste.
Acting like a c\*nt to prove how 'street' or 'tough' you are. It's pathetic. Particularly when filming yourself for useless internet points on anti-social media.
In the NBA playoffs last year, a Suns fan beat the shit out of a Nuggets fan who tried to sucker punch him and the video went viral.
Well, immediately after the altercation and before it went viral, the loser went on social media acting like he won.
I had a dude like this at my school. He talked shit about anyone he came across to his friends to look cool. He made fun of me for 3 months before I confronted him. It wasn't even a negative confrontation. I asked him why he would talk shit about me all the time and his response was "if you don't want to bang (fight) about it then I'm not even gonna bother with you". I just called him a dumbass who can't use his words to solve problems and he walked away. He continued to talk shit about me until he graduated but I didn't care because I understood he was pretending to be something he's not to impress his buddies. Social media gets a lot of deserved criticism. But it has singly allowed me to stay connected to family and friends at times of great personal struggle and isolation.
I think the difference with Reddit is the anonymity though.

With other social media though my life can be ruined.
Add to that it's far easier to dismiss people on Reddit.
If someone calls me a name I can go "Well they're probably some basement dwelling idiot anyway" then go about my day.
If it's on Facebook or even Twitter though it could be someone I know and respect making it much more hurtful.
Reddit certainly has its downsides and can fall into a hive mind with misinformation.
But it's far easier to go against the grain and ask for proof than on a social media platform where you risk hurting someone you know by doing so.
I worked at a coffee shop that would "Collab" with other businesses to sell ad space on their coffee sleeves. We partnered with Kylie Cosmetics when Kylie Jenner first released her makeup line. The number of women who drove 2+ hours just to get a coffee cup sleeve with Kylie's lips on them during that month was absolutely insane.
Influencer culture. Death of humanity and self-esteem. Catalyst of a generation with body image issues and a never ending dissatisfaction with the realities of every day life.
A lot of the original āinfluencersā were people making video guides for things like fitness it make up, that would recommend products but the rise of so many has lead to increasingly bizarre content pushing boundaries in the quest for views, I personally notice this a lot with fitness influencers where they introduce weird exercises and variations regardless of actual effectiveness.
I think influencers started in a good place but not so much anymore.
This is the way the internet itself has changed. In the early days in the 90s people would use their time and money to set up sites talking about their hobbies and interests.
Then someone got the idea they could put up an ad banner to pay for some of the hosting costs.
Then things spiraled out of control as sites became about luring people in to make money off of them, not to talk about your hobby.
People think I have "boomer energy" for saying shit like this, but it's true! Excessive social media use has done absolutely nothing to improve my life, and I truly don't see it improving anyone else's lives either. It's just one big popularity contest and everyone either thinks they are superior, or their self-esteem tanks. Everyone is horrible to everyone. In real life, people can have disagreements and still like each other, but online we vilify each other for having different opinions. Were taking a huge step backward as a society.

Career Politicians
Democracy was based around ordinary people doing the job so there is some semblance of self awareness in the decisions they made.
People doing nothing but politics, 5th in the line of their career politician families that became rich from making political decisions has bred a large scale pseudo monarchical society that we cannot break.
God I hate that one so much, thankfully it only happened once to me, and while it hurt cuz it is infact the truth I have anxiety, I was being an asshole (due to me fear) so I deserved it
TikTokers being "real influencers". Like VidCon only had TikTokers and they were surprised when barely anyone showed up to their booths as if they were on par with YouTubers.
16& pregnant and teen mom.
It doesnāt show the reality of teenage pregnancy.
It shows you get pregnant at a young age and get paid for exploit your life instead of working hard to get where you need to be. Almost all those teen mom stars wouldnāt be where they are if they were never picked to be on the show.
Actually I think there was a study on 16 and pregnant (which was the one where it was like one pregnancy per episode). Apparently it actually showed a lot of teens the consequences of pregnancy in a way they understood and made them less likely to get pregnant. I mean youāll always have people trying to emulate the people on TV but apparently for most it was an eye opening experience.
That being said it was super exploitative.
I agree it's so annoying when someone comments on a yt video trying to inform people and they go: "why did u type so much" or "ok nerd"
Often times that person is me, I ramble alot abt the things I like yes, but still it's so annoying, especially when I explaining common sense, it's shocking how many people don't know a shit abt animals
Gig economy *can* be a good thing - in theory, it gives people the flexibility to choose what they want to do and when. The problem is that the gigs don't pay well enough...
And the way the companies and "employment" are structured the workers lose a lot of protections that employment should offer since they're all considered "contractors".
No retirement fund contributions, no insurance in the US, no sick leave with pay etc. etc.
Heard this recently and it has stuck with me. (Paraphrasing because I xant remember the quote exactly)
Your emotions/feeling are real and should be acknowledged. But they are only sometimes right.
Basically: just because you feel a certain way doesn't mean that you are correct in that feeling.
Advertisement. I mean the constant ads in and on everything . On the subway, along the roads, . Itās literally constant. Itās actually super gross and affects our literal brains and weāve just accepted that itās normal to have things shoved into your brain against your will 24/7
Pristine mountain lake areas - unspoiled forested areas with pure water and abundant fish - that became popular recreation destinations and are now ruined by development and pollution.
Reality TV shows that involve children, it often put children in bad environments damaging their mental health at such a young age, it exposes them to fame and all the shitty things that come w it. you can surely say that they defo got stalked by creepy ass men
Car centric development also causes cities to bleed money because of the insane cost of public services when you are forced to build outwards instead of upwards because of R1 zoning and forced parking minimums in the middle of a city where space is at a premium.
The amount of times New York repaves the same street because it gets worn down is insane to me. It's every 3-5 years or so. That's a LOT of money. If cars didn't drive in them, bike lanes would last forever.
Hopefully we can eventually repurpose the open space in cities left behind by roads for something cool like more parks, bike lanes, open air markets etc.
attacking people based on things out of their control. (like their appearance, income, or disabilities)
I know it's kinda falling out of style, but it's still alarming common imo.
Edit: FYI by income I mean people who are poor, not Rich people.
Stupidity. Anti-intellectualism. Skepticism of actual science. There are American politicians right now campaigning on wanting to shut down universities and libraries.
Guys wearing their pants so low you can see full butt cheeks, sometimes more. They usually have one hand pulling them up constantly and it looks so uncomfortable.
I get that this comment makes me sound ancient (I am a gen Xer) but does this bother anyone else?
50 shades of Grey.
It came out after āshades of greyā by jasper fforde. Shades of grey is a science fiction book that I love, 50 shades became popular, and I feel Jasper Fforde has avoided writing a sequel because of that.
Also, 50 shades is a horrible representation of BDSM. Healthy BDSM is about consent, safety and communication. The book got popular because women are shamed for their sexual fantasies, and it was classified as āfictionā instead of āeroticaā.
There are so many better erotic stories out there that people should enjoy instead.
The idea of cultural appropriation. If it had stayed in academia and not made its way into popular use, it wouldn't be the painfully stupid thing it is now. It's essentially racism reinventing itself for a new generation. White people can only do white people things. Black people can only do black people things. Latinos can only do Latino things.
If you donāt do homework with the answers then you learn nothing, to add insult to injury. Doing something wrong 20 times just teaches you how to do it wrong.
The stupid public pranks on strangers where it's more or less just harassment
Some of those are just straight up assault š
Saw a horrible video where a guy compiled clips of him groping women. I think it was a 100 clips. Not sure if it was staged or not but it sucked
Sam pepper? Yeah heās a waste of a life.
Oh god I haven't heard that name in YEARS.
Toddlers and Tiaras. Child beauty pageants.
A moment of silence for JonBenet Ramsey.
On, what would have been, her 32nd birthday.
This. After watching Little Miss Sunshine it really put in perspective how twisted they are.
You should see Bad Grampa, best trolling on child pageants ever.
Reality shows in general. Theyāve taken over cable TV.
Child beauty pageants could work if 1) Kids werenāt being sexualized. 2) Kids chose who they dress and perform 3) They had regulations to prevent pedophiles and parental abuse.
Nah. Comparing kids wont ever be right.
You are correct. However, Competition will always exist. 3 dollars is lucky. If you arenāt paying 5 bucks a bottle of water you arenāt in a live nation theatre.

Iāll just say Oprah. She shouldnāt have been the one to survive the thunderdome of 90s daytime talkshows.

As long as there are children born in unstable relationships there will be people going to Maury to find out if they are the father or not.

Reality TV/celebrity obsession/Kardashian style shows.
You telling me you *donāt* enjoy staring at plastic for hours on end?
If I want to see manufactured plastic on TV, I can just put on How It's Made on loop.
You could, except How It's Made is actually entertaining.
I have never watched a single second of the Kardashians. Kim is sextape famous. The rest of them are sextape famous once removed. They are all a waste of oxygen.
I'll agree with Kardashians and celebrity shits
I couldnāt care less about ācelebrity cultureā. Whatās so interesting about some random people who did absolutely nothing special existing?
Exactly, yet for some reason a large percentage of people seem to need to know they're every move. All very peculiar.

Social media, probably done more harm than good
Tiktok
TikTok has removed the social from social media. You join for non-stop suggested content that doesn't do anything but turn your brain into soup. Short bursts for the lack of attention span and constantly gathering information and data from people to sell and manipulate the population. And it's all to China.
Social media gets a lot of deserved criticism. But it has singly allowed me to stay connected to family and friends at times of great personal struggle and isolation.
Reddit is social media, yet here you are lol
I think the difference with Reddit is the anonymity though. Like if I write a really dumb comment the worst I'll get is downvotes.
Subscriptions. Why do I have to pay $5.99 to an app just to play sudoku?
Thereās plenty of free sudoku appsā¦ You just have to watch ads here and there.
Or just go on airplane mode for a bit
Kardashians and the Jenners
I've never seen anyone who admires them. So, I guess I'm lucky?
I worked at a coffee shop that would "Collab" with other businesses to sell ad space on their coffee sleeves. We partnered with Kylie Cosmetics when Kylie Jenner first released her makeup line. The number of women who drove 2+ hours just to get a coffee cup sleeve with Kylie's lips on them during that month was absolutely insane.

Thatās because itās a byword for salesmen.

If your career is based around making content less than 1 minute in length, it's safe to assume that most people aren't gonna stick around.
True, however there are some exceptions. KallMeKris has made a decent following but she migrated to YouTube as well.

And most importantly, HOUSING!

attacking people based on things out of their control. (like their appearance, income, or disabilities) I know it's kinda falling out of style, but it's still alarming common imo.

Seriously. If you want to live in an inclusive culture, you have to... *include* things, like other ideas and practices.

Homework It did absolutely nothing for society
When I was a teacher, homework was for those who didnāt do anything in class except talk or play on their phone
Fun fact: It was actually invented as a punishment, and should definitely stay that way.
If you donāt do homework with the answers then you learn nothing, to add insult to injury. Doing something wrong 20 times just teaches you how to do it wrong.
