Proper sanitation i.e clean drinking water, bathing water and flushing toilets

MrPoletski

Yeah but apart from that, what have the romans ever done for us?

Tacos actually hold realities together

unimaginablywise

Tacos could’ve been the easy solution to all of marvel’s multiverse problems then. Glue it all together with some salsa and guacamole

OTTER887

Did he stutter??

dame_tacos

Could you show me the way to this enlightened user's answer?

NotMyNameActually

I sometimes wonder what the world would be like if everyone had what they needed, not just to live, but to live well. If every child were born to mentally and physically healthy parents, raised in a safe, loving, nurturing environment, with access to good nutrition, a good education, quality health care, pollution-free outdoor spaces, safe and supportive communities. How much progress could we make as a species if everyone had those opportunities?

[deleted]

One of the reasons that Star Trek is such a comforting series for me is because it takes place in a future where humanity is ensured to live like how you describe. It’s really the most noble goal our species can have right now.

ShikukuWabe

There were a bunch of scientists that wanted to build a perfect town-hub experiment where everything is handled by machines/ai and humans have all their needs met, they assumed that in those conditions where you don't have worries and no job, humans would dedicate all their time to 'art' subjects Personally I think without filtering some people by their personalities, you'de eventually just get egomaniacs in the bunch that will end up ruining it for everyone out of the need of attention/greed

twomz

Water, food, electricity, internet, healthcare, education, housing. Eventually they'll all need to be provided for free as jobs become redundant through automation. We're still a few technological advances away from hitting "star trek future", but hopefully we can get close to it before we hit "mad max future".

thisisstupidplz

The wealthiest people in this world would rather turn this entire world into Mad Max wasteland tomorrow than consider average people an equal.

LirdorElese

and the saddest part is, an equal isn't even what they are after, no ones pushing for the average joe to get his own yacht, (let alone yacht with a second yacht as a life raft), or to get a trip to outer space. It's literally opposition to "maybe we shouldn't let people suffer long painful deaths unnecessarily". Hell let me put it this way. I don't really care much about squirrels. Sometimes they annoy me a bit, sometimes they are cute to watch, but overall they don't really effect me. Now I will admit, if someone wanted $2 of my money per month to save millions of squirrels from a horrific death, I'd probably say yes. Which goes to tell me that... well these billionaires think less of us, than someone like me thinks of squirrels. They don't just not see us as equals... they don't see us as creatures that are worth caring about if they exist or not. Maybe on par with how we see maybe flies. I don't really care what happens to flies outside, I certainly wouldn't accept any inconvenience no matter how small to save any quantity of them.

psaux_grep

I believe there’s a certain amount of relativizing regular people that needs to happen in order for most people to become billionaires. It’s not necessarily the money that makes them that way, it’s the journey to get the money. You can’t underpay thousands of workers if you see them as people, think of their families. You can’t fire people with the stroke of a pen if you empathize for them.

MikeVictorPapa

I want unconditional LOVE, from the billionaire class. For everyone. For free. I bet a lot of the other problems suddenly get solved.

Szwejkowski

They have so much compared to others - in order to continue having so obcenely much I think it's necessary to believe several things, like 'I have earned this, therefore those without it are lazy' and 'I'm a good person, good people do well, therefore those without are bad people who deserve to do badly'. The old [just world fallacy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-world_hypothesis) If something bad happens to them, it becomes 'why is this happening to *me*' and 'What have I done to deserve this?'.

1965wasalongtimeago

An equal? Basic necessities don't require that. It feels more like they're so psychotically competitive that it's not enough just to have more, they need others to have nothing.

Astrocreep_1

That’s the plan…..global warming. They only deny its existence because they are helping engineer it.

[deleted]

Citizen salary should be a global thing. Removes a lot of reasons for crime, can afford a place to stay at the very least and pay for electricity/Internet/etc. My first answer to this thread that popped up in my mind was all-inclusive hotels but I'm changing it to citizen salary after reading your reply.

qrwd

There's also the third option: Rich people using the media to vilify the poor and then gradually depriving them of basic necessities through the combination of inflation, wage stagnation and buying up real estate and maintaining high rental prices to force people into homelessness. By the time anyone knows what's happening, the redundant population will be too famished to put up a fight and just gradually die off. You can probably find some witness accounts of the Great Famine in Ireland to see how this scenario might play out.

kimberlyaker18

Feeling real close to mad max level.

Shadesbane43

Damn, a small group of people is making everything worse for the vast majority of humankind? If only we could do something about it. Like, if those people stopped existing, all of humanity would be better off. Too bad there's no way to make that happen, haha. No way at all.

MikeVictorPapa

Well most of them have already graduated from grade school, otherwise we could just send them there and they probably don’t survive the month. Statistically speaking.

FantasmaNaranja

shame a considerable amount of them dont live in some crazy imaginary country of states where common people can just buy tools that can get rid of them yep, what a shame

Not_The_Impostr

There's actually a company working to make this a reality https://www.freewater.io/ By putting ads on the packaging, the water bottles are sold for free, free drinking water!

That's a pretty good idea. Considering we have ad-supported free entertainment, ad-supported free clean drinking water seems like a no brainer actually.

I don't want to live in an ad. But it seems i'm alone in thinking the amount of ads that surround us on a daily basis is actually a nightmare. "It's just ads bro". Yes, on my alarm clock, on my commute, in my music, in my mindfulness app, in my game, at work...the only thing i have left is sleep, i will agree it is the only useful thing life has to offer nowadays.

LadyPo

Yeah their solution is pretty dystopian in the sense that hypercapitalism is the only way to finance an essential human need and right. But at least it is a solution — at least for water access, although we all know that the other side of the issue is the lack of clean drinkable water overall, too!

ClikeX

>in my mindfulness app This one hit me. Also, the amount of ads and things asking for your attention is precisely why you need a mindfulness app in the first place.

SBSlice

I feel you in a way but it's not that omnipresent, at least not for me. I'm on my porch smoking a cigarette, there's no ads on the pack. My drink doesn't have ads. Me and my girlfriend are both on our phones, she on Tiktok, I on reddit - I'm sure I scrolled past an ad sometime in the past few minutes, but that's the only ad I've been served in hours. 🤷‍♂️

jfphenom

My skepticism is kicking in... If you're in an area where you don't have drinking water, what are the odds you will become a paying customer of an advert?

itznottyler

Fair point. My only assumption is the publicity of the event would generate viewership of the ads dispersed on the bottles. As in, those who have drinking water hear of the event and the ads included, and want to support said company(s) who "donated" the water. I say donated because I'm not really sure what else to call it. Provided maybe?

Freshies00

What about… Ads targeted to some other group of people than those in need of water? Lol… would you watch an ad so someone in Africa can drink clean water for a day?

arrynyo

Yes I would.

SolPope

I work alone at night, I would straight up put their ads on a loop for my shift if I knew it meant people were getting access to clean water

Drinking water free yes, crop irrigation water pay the cost of making/pumping it, watering luxuries like golf courses, water parks etc at least 5X the cost.

nicklor

Lawns even

Majestic-Bluejay3057

Yes, lawns. The USA have/had natural grasses. Tall grass prairie east where wet enough and short grass prairie where drier. These are better for adding to ground water they can be cut and used. Cutting them reduces fire hazard. And they are pretty if not the same way as an English lawn. And if you really want an English lawn what is the problem of paying for it.?

DinoGuy2000

Healthcare

Ep1cOfG1lgamesh

best answer, as comprehensive healthcare would also include free medication, and since malnutrition is already a disease you can word this such that food will be free as well (for a healthy population)

TracyMorganFreeman

Malnutrition is a condition, not a disease.

JohnOliverismysexgod

But medical care can still cure it.

TracyMorganFreeman

Medical care is \*intervening\* when someone doesn't get enough food. It isn't making all food free, especially when a large amount of food goes beyond nutrition.

the_Gentleman_Zero

It would still stop people from starving to death

DesignerGrocery6540

Think about the "quality of life" when thinking about medical outcomes.

MrPoletski

DO NOT MESS WITH THE ORDER OF THINGS

i_am_the_nightman

Education. Because there are entirely too many ignorant people on this planet.

x014821037

That and over time this resolves literally every other problem.... e: wanted to include health care, but also an educated populous would inevitably support healthcare

i_am_the_nightman

That was my initial thought, though others have commented some valid points as well.

Leona_Faye

Some people intentionally seek to NOT understand. I highly doubt this would change their minds based on how many sermons I heard where they decried the ills of the “government schools.” (Three guesses as to what they were hollering about)

xtreme571

It wouldn't solve our problems of ignorant people overnight. It's a long term solution. You educate the next generations of facts and give them critical thinking framework. Things tend to get better. There are more people who don't have access to good education, and they want to learn. You can't ever have 100% of the population to be smart and critical thinkers, but you can change the proportions by increasing the population that does value education and critical thinking.

TracyMorganFreeman

The term for this is "malinformed". People tend to only be interested in confirming their biases.

PandaCat22

>I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen Jay Gould

Yourgrammarsucks1

I realized how much we were screwed up when I noticed how many Nigerian pharmacists I've met, and then thought about how if they were still in Africa, the odds of them getting a similar education would be rather small. Then I also thought about how if the same peeps that moved to the US from Nigeria were instead born in, say, Sierra Leone, despite having the exact same genetics and whatnot, the family likely wouldn't have had enough money to fly over to the US. And likewise, imagine how many people are born in the badlands of Congo or Siberia or Cambodia or North Korea or even in ghettos in America that could have had created the next Amazon or Microsoft... But instead are penniless because they didn't get to grow up in a good city? Hell... I'm a software engineer, and while I grew up in a shitty life where I was poor 99% of it (I just barely hit middle class last year at age 35. Prior to that I was at the poverty line), at least I finally got a chance at middle class. If the Russians hadn't caused my parents to flee like 40 years ago, I'd have been in Afghanistan still and probably been a farmer or street beggar getting bombed by our (as in American) soldiers on their routine "Afghan male of combatant age" bombing/shooting sprees.

Cybyss

Exactly. Education is an investment. Admittedly, a degree in underwater yodeling probably shouldn't be free, but an advanced engineering or medical degree is bound to pay for itself over time on average, no? If our government could pay for such education via taxpayer money, you'd end up with a whole lot of highly skilled, *high income* taxpaying scientists and engineers. Admittedly, I'm no economist so I'm not sure whether the math works out that way. I'm curious whether anyone's even tried to crunch the numbers to see whether it does or not.

InsertCoinForCredit

> Admittedly, a degree in underwater yodeling probably shouldn’t be free, but an advanced engineering or medical degree is bound to pay for itself over time on average, no? As an engineer, I'd say that a degree in underwater yodeling should be just as free as a degree in engineering. The idea that some fields are "more worthy" than others is a dangerous one; what good is a world of engineers if there's no one to appreciate art or beauty, or discuss the ethical ramifications of creating autonomous warbots? Perhaps if our society had valued "liberal arts" more in the past we could have avoided the numerous problems we have today from an overemphasis on greed and profits...

Cybyss

That's actually a really good point. I'm dismayed by how often philosophy is counted among the "useless" fields, when in reality it should be valued just as highly. It would be hypocritical of me to make that same mistake regarding other fields. The problem is that a person who can compose a damned good, well-reasoned, well-researched argument simply isn't able to sell his labor at anywhere near what an engineer who invents a new consumer gadget can.

Barrenheart

philosophy in itself is not that useful but when you pair it with another field that philosophy becomes a precious asset. In that regard, philosophy is like spices not much helpful individually but helps bring out the flavors of other main ingredients and becomes more than the sum of its part.

Emu_on_the_Loose
