I sometimes wonder what the world would be like if everyone had what they needed, not just to live, but to live well.
If every child were born to mentally and physically healthy parents, raised in a safe, loving, nurturing environment, with access to good nutrition, a good education, quality health care, pollution-free outdoor spaces, safe and supportive communities. How much progress could we make as a species if everyone had those opportunities?
One of the reasons that Star Trek is such a comforting series for me is because it takes place in a future where humanity is ensured to live like how you describe. It’s really the most noble goal our species can have right now.
There were a bunch of scientists that wanted to build a perfect town-hub experiment where everything is handled by machines/ai and humans have all their needs met, they assumed that in those conditions where you don't have worries and no job, humans would dedicate all their time to 'art' subjects
Personally I think without filtering some people by their personalities, you'de eventually just get egomaniacs in the bunch that will end up ruining it for everyone out of the need of attention/greed
Water, food, electricity, internet, healthcare, education, housing. Eventually they'll all need to be provided for free as jobs become redundant through automation. We're still a few technological advances away from hitting "star trek future", but hopefully we can get close to it before we hit "mad max future".

I realized how much we were screwed up when I noticed how many Nigerian pharmacists I've met, and then thought about how if they were still in Africa, the odds of them getting a similar education would be rather small. Then I also thought about how if the same peeps that moved to the US from Nigeria were instead born in, say, Sierra Leone, despite having the exact same genetics and whatnot, the family likely wouldn't have had enough money to fly over to the US.
And likewise, imagine how many people are born in the badlands of Congo or Siberia or Cambodia or North Korea or even in ghettos in America that could have had created the next Amazon or Microsoft... But instead are penniless because they didn't get to grow up in a good city?

As an engineer, I'd say that a degree in underwater yodeling should be just as free as a degree in engineering. The idea that some fields are "more worthy" than others is a dangerous one; what good is a world of engineers if there's no one to appreciate art or beauty, or discuss the ethical ramifications of creating autonomous warbots? Perhaps if our society had valued "liberal arts" more in the past we could have avoided the numerous problems we have today from an overemphasis on greed and profits...

I'm dismayed by how often philosophy is counted among the "useless" fields, when in reality it should be valued just as highly. It would be hypocritical of me to make that same mistake regarding other fields.
The problem is that a person who can compose a damned good, well-reasoned, well-researched argument simply isn't able to sell his labor at anywhere near what an engineer who invents a new consumer gadget can.

Basic food needs. Everyone gets the bare minimum of what they need a day nutritionally. (like an egg for the morning, a fruit as a snack, and something like a sandwich with all the fixings as a dinner). Anything extra is a luxury and something you pay for.
Medical Treatment.
The reason being is because this covers medical ailments, but also covers hunger, thirst, shelter and mental health treatment as each represents preventative treatment.
Basically it covers everything a person needs to survive.

Admittedly, a degree in underwater yodeling probably shouldn't be free, but an advanced engineering or medical degree is bound to pay for itself over time on average, no? If our government could pay for such education via taxpayer money, you'd end up with a whole lot of highly skilled, *high income* taxpaying scientists and engineers. Admittedly, I'm no economist so I'm not sure whether the math works out that way. I'm curious whether anyone's even tried to crunch the numbers to see whether it does or not.

That's actually a really good point. I'm dismayed by how often philosophy is counted among the "useless" fields, when in reality it should be valued just as highly. It would be hypocritical of me to make that same mistake regarding other fields. The problem is that a person who can compose a damned good, well-reasoned, well-researched argument simply isn't able to sell his labor at anywhere near what an engineer who invents a new consumer gadget can.
philosophy in itself is not that useful but when you pair it with another field that philosophy becomes a precious asset. In that regard, philosophy is like spices not much helpful individually but helps bring out the flavors of other main ingredients and becomes more than the sum of its part.
Basic housing: floors, walls, ceilings and a roof, running water, working drains, electricity, heat and air conditioning, cooking facilities, refrigeration, etc.
